“You’re beautiful, you know,” Devin said. “Especially when you do that.”
“Do what?” Lucy eyed him warily.
“Stare at me all hungry then get shy and look away when you realize you’d like a bite.”
Pastry Chef Lucy Crowthorne has no room for romance in her life. Running her bakery, making trendy pastries, and mixing potions takes up all the space on her proverbial plate. Using her craft to spread good vibes in her secret magical community is both fun and keeps her focused—until a tall, dark-eyed, and extremely distracting someone begins poking his nose around her kitchen.
Food columnist Devin Dawson can’t ignore his inbox any longer. Loyal customers of Pastries and Potions want foodie magazine PastryLit to get the scoop on this young baker and her desserts that are wowing the Oregon coast. He checks out the pastry shop and can’t deny her mousse cakes and caramel bars are worth repeat visits. But it’s the pastry chef behind the bakery case that he’s having undeniable cravings for.
Lucy’s been burned in the past, figuratively of course. Revealing her magical identity to her ex-boyfriend was her worst adulting decision ever and led to the “Clint Catastrophe” her family won’t let her forget. Now let’s be clear, Devin Dawson is nothing like Clint. So why can’t Lucy shake the feeling that if Devin discovers her secret it will lead to catastrophic heartache?

This was a really cute read! If you’re a fan of strong females trying to make a name for themselves by running a bakery with a little twist of magic, this is for you.
I’m pretty much a sucker for any sort of story that revolves around food. Reading about the different pastries and the additional enhancements aka magic that’s used to up the eating experience gave me a massive craving for something sweet and loaded with carbs.
Oh, Lucy and Devin! 😍 I loved how they each supported the other with their dreams. Lucy wanted to break away from the future her family planned for her and Devin wanted to become a novelist, writing historical fantasy. They had funny conversations, silly inside jokes, and were all for each other. I was there for it!
This was adorable and one I’d recommend. 😁 It is part of a series with other authors but can be read as a stand-alone.
Confession. One of my favorite tropes is food fiction. I love reading about all the yummy creations and then dream about recreating them. Sadly, when it comes to this trope, the pickens are slim. So, imagine my surprise and utter delight when I see the cutest book cover and discover it's all about a magical pastry chef! I felt like it was screaming at me... pick me! pick me! And pick I did. I may or may not have squealed and did a little happy dance as I one-clicked this baby.
Y'all. From the moment I started reading, I was swept away to the magical island of Moonrise Cove. Everything around me ceased to exist and I found myself sitting in the small alcove at Pastries and Potions with Lucy and Devin, nibbling on a Hunky-Chunky chocolate cupcake and drinking hot cocoa while being regaled by their adventurous love story.
Before she was even born, Lucy's life was mapped out for her. She didn't have a choice in what she wanted to do or who she wanted to be. Having the decisions made for her had her feeling trapped and smothered. She just wanted to be free to choose things for herself. Opening up Pastries and Potions was just the ticket to prove to everyone that she can do the hard things on her own. With so much on the line, she can't afford any distractions.
Enter in Devin. Y'all. I loved him instantly! I know I say this in a lot of my reviews but, he was absolutely perfect for Lucy! Even though he's absolutely clueless when it comes to magic, it doesn't stop him from being who Lucy needs in her life. Whether it's saving her from accidents, encouraging her when she's feeling down, cleaning up the disasters that seem to be following her around, whatever she needs, he is always there for her, no questions asked. He is absolute perfection!
Oh how I adored Lucy and Devin! I loved getting to know them and seeing what made them tick. Their journey wasn't all sunshine and roses. There were bumps along the way and hard choices needed to be made. But those things made them stronger and helped mold them into who they were meant to be.
You guys! This is seriously the cutest and sweetest book! But it really needs to come with a warning or two. I'm thinking something like...
*WARNING* Make sure you have some sweet treats with you while reading because you are most definitely going to be craving some yummy goodness like Moonrise Turtle Bars and Hunky-Chunky chocolate cupcakes. (Y'all. I really need these in my life!)
*WARNING* Make sure you clear your calendar because once you start, you won't want to stop. It may or may not cause you to be late back to work after lunch.
If you haven't guessed already, I absolutely adored this debut novel by Ms. LeBaron! She did a phenomenal job of kidnapping me and holding me hostage until the very end. I cannot wait to read more of her books!
As for my casting... y'all. There are no words! I love these two!
This book is freaking adorable. I loved spending time with Lucy as she crafted her playful potions, and as she took the risk of falling love. This got a 10/10 for cute romance and an 11/10 for snort laughs.
For me- that’s a win. Devin was so precious in his feelings towards Lucy. I stan a guy who tells a girl exactly how he feels. I loved Lucy’s shop - Pastries and Potions and the element of her chaotic family.
Romance isn't a genre I typically pick up on my own, but this series so far has been so delightful. There is enough bridging ideas and content that truly bring in what the titles of each story in this series implies: magic.
4.5 stars this delightful novel was a real treat! I loved the escapism this book provided. A contemporary romance with a bit of magic, the characters, the setting, and the bit of supernatural were simply joyful to read and I found myself very entertained. I liked the characters a lot. It felt a bit like Hallmark's The Good Witch in vibe, but with more swoon and younger characters. I loved the connection between Lucy and Devin. The author did an excellent job with the flirtatious banter between them and I found myself smiling often at the two of them. I definitely like this author's writing style and am glad I checked this book out. It's a standalone novel as well as part of a multi-author series. This book makes me want to read the other books in this connected world. This is a clean read with no inappropriate language or content.
Ahhhhh this was so cute, corny, and just plain old romantic!
This book follows Lucy Crawthorne who is as "normal" humans would say, a witch. Her and her family live amongst a secret magical community on their island where they sell magical items, or items imbued with magic. Lucy has a contract with her parents that if she is unsuccessful in striking out on her own by owning and managing her own bakery, she has to come back and take over their family restaurant with her twin brother. One day, Devin Dawson comes, a writer for PastryLit a major Pastry magazine that features up and coming bakers and they want to feature her in their magazine. So, Devin is staying in the area to interview her, and also see her bakery in action. Lucy is all for it, except it seems no matter what she does, one disaster after another occurs, and on top of it all, Devin is handsome and charming, but she doesn't want another "Clint Catastrophe" to occur after she told her previous boyfriend the truth about her family and his reaction that caused quite an uproar. Should she focus on her bakery, or maybe give Devin a chance since he seems different from Clint to know the truth about her?
I just love books, especially romances, that involve baking! I've always wanted to own my own bakery, and so I have such a soft spot for these kinds of books, especially when you throw in a bit of magic in there, even better!
The romance in this book is to die for! It's hilarious, but cute, and corny at times, and just all around adorable. I love Devin! He is just perfect and so charming and handsome, just ahhhh I loved him! Then add Lucy who is accident prone, and who is just hilarious, it was just great seeing these two together because they make quite a couple!
I also really loved the world within a world, with the secret magical community who all have their own unique abilities that you learn with each person within Lucy's family, and there's more of them on that island aside from Lucy and her family.
I really look forward to more in this series. If I read it correctly, I think there's supposed to be six more, and I'm all for it! Thank you to the author and Sapphire Ink Press for the free digital copy to read. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Grab this book if you love clean romances, whimsical settings, and magical characters! I loved the main character, Lucy, a pastry chef who is so relatable in her dating life and also a pro at baking. Seriously, reading this book will make you hungry because she talks about all these delicious sweets and pastries, sure to make your mouth water. Not only that but you could tell the author really knew what she was talking about when it came to baking. I think this book would’ve been *enhanced* (inside joke if you read the book :P) if she would’ve added a recipe at the back because dang, the food sounded good! The writing was also superb-crisp sentences filled with just the right dash of humor! One of my favorite lines in the book was “crappy cupcakes!” Oh and the chapter headings were befittingly titled, which was a plus. Check it out! Also the author is pretty active on her Instagram so if you ever wanna reach out to her you can, which I think is so cool having a writer be so accessible. Lastly, one of the most fun component about this book is that it’s part of a series and the character for the next book is introduced in the epilogue, so it all comes full circle in the end.
I didn't put a star rating because, admittedly, I'm not the best person to review this book (but I try to leave reviews now for my own benefit, to remember what I thought of a book). As background, I really don't like romances...and most love stories in general, for that matter, but I read this book because I know the author and I enjoy reading her Facebook posts, so I wanted to give the book a try and see her writing style. Having said that, this book is a "clean" romance novel (as far as no sex or anything drastic like that), but there were definitely parts I skipped over as I read because they're not my style (descriptions of getting distracted by looking at the man's lips or his broad shoulders or that kind of thing, some kissing, but not a lot...like I said, just totally not my thing). Aside from that, though, I thought the story was very fun and the writing style was engaging. It was a pretty quick read. There were some fun and creative twists and events, and I definitely found myself wanting to see what happened next. The characters were fun and likeable as well.
I got the ebook cause I didn't want to buy the paperback and the library doesn't carry it. But I dislike reading books on my phone or any other device. So it was a real struggle to keep me reading.
The cover is captivating! I love the colors and imagery. I like that she called her bike Broom too. So fitting for a 'witch'.
I was excited to read this book cause I enjoy magic. The potions and pastries connection was fun. I'm not a big fan of love stories, so I had a really hard time connecting. It's a cute story for the right people who enjoy that.
I was distracted by the excessive wording. It felt a little too descriptive at times. But that's just me.
A lovely standalone romance story within the Moonrise Cove setting, this was a cute and clean romantic comedy that left me with a feel-good vibe, the main characters were adorable and watching their relationship develop from professional to romantically was sweet if not clumsy and hilarious at times. There were a number of scenes that were lovely as well as a couple that were a little embarrassing, definitely the kind of novel you could see becoming an independent film.
This book is very heavy on the food theme/inclusion, there is a description of some kind of food article or potion on nearly every other page, so it can be quite repetitive with the snacks and foods, and this did wear off in some places for me and I did find myself skimming some of the food descriptions, but the romance plot and development did counterbalance this for me.
Lucy was a great character, and her development and self-discovery was fantastic, it was great to see her become so empowered and master of her own fate with her pastry shop, as to not follow in her parents footsteps. Plus, her Aunt was such a lovely addition to the character list, I felt like she really helped Lucy more than her mother did, as in places her mother felt a little critical especially when she makes a point of telling Lucy how tired she looks.
This is definitely a summer feel good read, just ensure that you have snacks at hand otherwise you’ll be salivating over some of the descriptions and cakes mentioned!
Cute! Light and fun, this was a book was a good escape. The wedding scene was my favorite! But don’t read it without a sweet treat on hand. It makes for killer cravings!
I'm not one to read Rom-Coms, but this book converted me. At least the author did. Her writing is so relatable, funny, endearing, and connecting. This is one I definitely recommend!
Magic in the Mix is sweet. It is filled with delightful descriptions of sugary concoctions and equally endearing characters. It is a perfect summer read. Moonrise Cove was a perfect place to escape to as I curled up on my couch ignoring my daily duties. It is romantic. Trish LeBaron has a gift for describing romantic sparks so well that the reader (at least this one) felt every one! Magic in the Mix exposed the witty humor of the author throughout. Mix all of the above together (bake at 350 for 45 minutes) and enjoy a generous serving of magic. S. White
Lucy and Devon are quite the pair. Lucy opened her own bake shop to prove to her parents that she could make it on her own. Devon comes to Moonrise Cove to write a piece for his brother's magazine about Lucy and her shop. This is a fun read with lots of humor, twists on some fairy tales and sweet romance.
