Holy HECK does Liv Evans know how to elegantly break a heart. OW!
This story is a sci-fi/romance (I'm always here for the spicy) so definitely for readers 18+!
I adored this story, it had me thinking, it had me philosophising about what is and isn't ethical and just UGH, I felt a lot.
The story is told mostly through a court case with the addition of flashbacks that showcase integral moments of the relationship between Mia and Arden. It was absolutely beautiful and heart breaking to experience the story like this. You know the couple are married and love each other, but seeing them meet, seeing them fall in love and experience life, and then watching alongside Mia as that is taken from them. It HURT.
Also, after hearing how the entire story panned out, heck I'm glad for the major twist, it was something that just felt right (even if it did leave me audibly gasping and clutching my chest haha *shakes fist at Liv Evans* you beautifully articulate human you).
Overall, I just absolutely adored this, the writing was phenomenal (honestly, the amount of quotes I highlighted while reading this because they were just so beautifully put together, ooft). This was my first Liv Evans book and it will most definitely not be my last.

I read The Code of Us in one day and then spent several days thinking about it before I wrote this review. It’s the kind of book that you just want to sit with and reflect upon for a while before sharing your thoughts. It generated several conversations in my house because of its thought-provoking premise (plus I couldn’t stop talking about it), and I found myself thinking about it even after I moved on to other books. It is such a poignant and thought-provoking novel!
The story focuses on Mia and Arden, a married couple involved in an unprecedented court case that will change their already changed lives forever. After a tragic accident pushes Mia to use her work resources to save Arden’s life, Mia’s marriage, job, and morals are scrutinized as people question her desperate decisions and what happened to Arden. Did Mia make the right decision? Is Arden still the man she fell in love with? How will her decisions affect their relationship?
Mia is a fascinating protagonist, and I continually put myself in her shoes as I read. Even though I didn’t agree with everything she did, I totally understood her reasons. As I read the story, I kept thinking of the show WandaVision because Mia reminded me of Wanda (minus the powers). Like Wanda, Mia’s feelings are so deep and so fierce, and the thought of losing the love of her life is too much, especially after the loss she already suffered. Losing someone you love is the ultimate pain, and if I had the chance to save a loved one, I would certainly take it, regardless of the ethical dilemma it might put me in. I think Evans did a fantastic job of creating sympathetic, relatable, and dynamic compelling protagonists, especially Mia.
Arden is also well-developed, and like Mia, he is faced with a difficult and complicated situation. He is an artist, and his beautifully described creations are great symbols throughout the story. The story really highlights his love for Mia. It is beautiful and profound, and their chemistry from the beginning is fantastic. Arden is so proud and supportive of Mia, and his unwavering love and desire for her is everything. I love the chapters that explore their relationship before the accident, as you can really tell how deeply he cares for his wife and she for him.
The chapters are not told chronologically and instead jump from past to present, giving the reader a well-rounded view of Mia and Arden’s relationship. And their relationship is wonderful – realistic and layered, the chapters offer snapshots of Arden and Mia’s love story before and after the accident. From their first meeting to their present encounters, their love for each other is deep, true, and complex, and it is as beautiful as it is heartbreaking. They face so many challenges, and when their love is put to the ultimate test, it’s interesting to see how their choices and actions change them and their relationship. They and their love story are deeply developed, and the non-sequential order of the story only highlights the strength of their bond throughout their time together.
The story is a unique mix of science fiction, romance, and courtroom drama, all of which are interesting. I also like that there are several unexpected revelations throughout the story. This is not a predictable read, and I was surprised many times as I read, especially towards the end. I was given an ARC of The Code of US and was super excited to get started. I then got extremely aggravated because I was expecting the second installment of The Underground and I've been WAITING!!!!! Come On Liv! But within the first page of Mia and Arden's story all was forgiven, because I was totally gripped by this incredibly thought-provoking, unique love story. While it might be labelled futuristic, I don't feel the questions raised are far removed from what we are dealing with right now.
This story will make you think. It will make you smile, pull at the heart-strings and take sides. Once again this talented author has created an imagined world in perfect color, startling clarity and emotional detail. She starts strong, grabbing the reader by the hand and not so much leading as tugging, racing, compelling through an intricately woven plot that falls back in time, jumps ahead and yet never loses its hold.
In true Liv Evans Fashion, her female lead is smart, strong, a leader and a warrior. She champions those she loves and never backs down. Our male lead is sweet, kind, supportive and her perfect fit. It is so refreshing to find well-developed characters who are certainly flawed and yet represent the best of humanity.
Whether you're a romance fan or not, I highly recommend reading The Code of Us. This is a story for everyone. You won't be disappointed. You might lose some sleep. Then go get yourself a copy of The Underground. If we gang up on Liv, I think we can bully into her FINALLY delivering the second installment. Did I say I was waiting patiently? Oh my goodness this book absolutely destroyed me. It was so raw and emotional throughout, every chapter had me hanging onto the story, onto every word. Each time jump was beautiful and painful, and these just added to understanding the story and experiencing what the characters were going through, all they lost.
This was my first dive into the sci-fi genre and the author did such an amazing job mashing sci-fi and romance! The writing was beautiful, the story was unique and captivating and the characters… oh my, Arden, you gorgeous soul, Mia you brilliant lady.
I don’t have anything negative points to mention, except that my heart freaking hurts! Just an incredible read.

Recently I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy of Liv’s latest book The Code of Us and let me tell you this book blew my mind and broke my heart all at once.
I loved Mia and Arden’s relationship and the way their story was told though snippets of their life bouncing from present to past and back again. It was such a unique format and while it took me a hot minute to grasp what was happening at the start, I loved being a part of these challenging and intimate parts of their life together.
I’m not sure I can really express the depth of emotions I felt reading this story and I have no doubt it will stay with me for years to come. Definitely a must read!!

I was lucky enough to be gifted an ARC of this book by the author. I’d previously read The Underground and really enjoyed it, so I was looking forward to reading more by this author.
From the very start this totally hooked me. The tension builds as the story and characters are gradually revealed through snapshots of events throughout their relationship. I literally couldn’t put it down and read it in one sitting. I just had to know where it was going and how it ended!
I’m not usually much of one for romance, but I couldn’t help but be sucked into this relationship as it grew, and fall in love with the beautifully drawn characters.
I won’t give any spoilers, but the premise and plot here was intriguing and thought provoking, with a good dose of ethical dilemma. I loved the way that the full implications built up in layers, along with the rest of the story, revealing new elements right up to the end without overwhelming.
Would recommend to anyone who enjoys love stories with a speculative fiction / sci-fi twist.

I was lucky enough to be gifted an ARC of this book, and let me just say, this book was something else. I do not normally read sci-fi but this was beautifully written with a nice mix of romance entwined throughout the story. As mentioned in other reviews, the book was though-provoking on certain topics of ethics, it was raw and the emotion poured into these characters made it such an amazing journey to go on. The timeline being jumped back and forth made it rewarding to read the last few chapters.
I found it bittersweet for our MC Mia, but I feel like the bittersweet tone and end was perfect for the story. It did leave me wanting more and I hope we can delve into more of Mia and Ardens story and what the future has in store for them.
Overall I love it and cannot wait to see what else Liv Evans has in store for us

Wow! What an emotional rollercoaster of a read.
This one had all the feels 😱😂🤕😠🤯😭
I'll be honest, stories about combining bio and tech always make me nervous, but I only have Sarah Connor's paranoia to blame 😂 Yet Mia and Arden's story does take you to a place where you question your own morals and motives if forced into a similar situation.
Along with reading, I really love art, and I really appreciated Liv Evans' attention to detail, especially while marrying (pun intended 😂) up the symbolism of Arden's artwork with the story of his and Mia's lives.
Gosh, that flashback to the marriage proposal had me swooning! It was definitely my favourite scene 🤩💖🥰💜

To say this book packs a punch even though it is small says something about the author! I’m not one to read much sci fi but after reading and devouring this beauty I can safely say that I would love to read more of it so gimme all the recs!

When a book jumps from past to present, I am never a fan. The back and forth between timelines can get tedious and information tends to get repeated. I always struggle to find the reason behind it. With The Code of Us, this wasn’t the case at all. You need each timeline and the information you achieve within that frame is downright precious.
The years in the past are meant to show you Arden as a person and fall in love with his childish ways, his creative spirit and his adoration for Mia. You see the strength of the couple’s relationship early on and root for it. The few months past is to show the depression of Mia. You see her struggle and make the choice based on wants rather than what is right. The present is our court case where the whole story revolves around. The question of whether Arden is human or not is up to the courtroom, but really the author is saying it is up to us to decide. The dual past timelines gives readers the chance to decide on a scientific or emotional level. I know what I feel, I am curious to know what others think as well.
Honestly I didn’t expect this to be such a deep and heavy read. I didn’t expect to sit with my thoughts afterwards and consider myself in the situation. I also didn’t expect to think about Arden and Mia as real people and wonder how they come back from this. This book is powerful, interesting and well thought out. I read it in a single day because I couldn’t just go to bed and leave my characters like that. I needed to have a firm resolution.

First up, I just have to say - how awesome and clever is this cover?! When you read the book you get even more of an appreciation for it.
Review time! I was blown away by this! I am so impressed by how much depth and story was in this especially for a shorter book. There was no part where I thought it needed more and the pacing was perfect with no 'filler words'.
This story explores some awesome tech that is probably not that far from where our reality might end up being. It was SO COOL and not far fetched at all. The whole time I kept thinking... this could totally happen one day.
I really enjoyed the romance and the deep love throughout the entire book. The story explores a bit of infertility for the main characters and the way that it is explained and the feelings that go along with each part of that were achingly real and raw. Which for me is 100% relatable in my own life so for me I felt extremely connected to the same feelings as the characters.
So much clever work was woven into this, and I enjoyed seeing everything come together in such a real way. Also, there is a spice factor which for some reason I wasn't expecting 😂

Review time! I was blown away by this! I am so impressed by how much depth and story was in this especially for a shorter book. There was no part where I thought it needed more and the pacing was perfect with no 'filler words'.
This story explores some awesome tech that is probably not that far from where our reality might end up being. It was SO COOL and not far fetched at all. The whole time I kept thinking... this could totally happen one day.

The Code of Us is the book that asks “What if…” and then runs with it sharing the extremes of human emotion and identity.
I absolutely loved this book! It is an intriguing and heart wrenching story of two lovers who faced the ultimate choice. If your partner died, how far would you go to bring them back and save them?
The emotion is high in this one because the stakes themselves are high. Told in chapters that alternate from present day through key moments of the Drew’s lives together it is this woven narrative that was impossible to put down.
There were some major twists involved, particularly at the end. One in particular made me yell out in shock!!
Although the ending was not what I was expecting I adored this romantic sci-fi 177 page gem!!

Holy moley! I sucked down this story like it was a fine bottle of wine! The Code of Us is the first book I’ve read from Liv Evans. And damn am I glad I found her!
This book got me right in the feels! My heart broke so many times for Mia and Arden. Imma need a follow up and stat!

Mia is a scientist who created Replicated Intelligence Program. The program once finished could be used to help people get their memories back black the program stores their social media accounts, searches and learns the individual.
The program is approved for research but not use. However, when Mia and her husband Arden (test subject 1) are involved in a car wreck and Arden “dies”, she has him brought to SynTheis Labs. There are chip with his R.I.P. information is implanted into his brain.
It creates a legal issue on whether Arden should have human rights or be the property of SynThesis Labs.
The Code of Us is Arden and Mia’s story about how the met, fell in love and the court case that determines their future. This was a quick interesting read.

My daughter recommended this book, and I can see why. Liv’s style of writing is very smooth and engaging. The court scenes in this story were my absolute favourite. I really felt as if I was there in the moment.
There were some devastating outcomes which sent me on an emotional rollercoaster, but I enjoyed being a part of the ride.
My fingers are crossed for a brighter future for Mia. I have faith that everything will turn around for the best, given time.

My throat feels thick, like I want to cry. What an amazing yet heartbreaking story. Will there be more, or is the rest for us to decide? I’m an emotional wreck right now.
I want to jump inside the book and comfort a certain someone; tell them I’m excited about their news.
I love the time jumps chapter by chapter. They give a deeper insight to Mia and Arden’s relationship, and help us to understand the tough choices they make.
The repurposed art done by Arden was a nice touch, and added an extra layer of emotion to the story. I could really envision it.
The sex scenes made me blush, but in all fairness, I haven’t read many steamy books. I get all prude like and embarrassed when sex scenes get graphic. I don’t know why. ☺️
Liv Evan’s is an expert at creating real and entertaining characters. I love both the dialogue and inner dialogue throughout all of her books.
This piece of inner dialogue made me laugh out loud.
Eg:
Is it too soon to be putting myself out there when I haven’t officially broken up with Heather?
Probably.
Should I take some time to just be on my own and figure my mind out?
Most likely.
Am I willing to lose the chance to learn more about this wonderful man to complete the socially prescribed mourning time over a relationship that was doomed from the start?
Not a fucking chance.
Overall I throughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it.

Wow. Just wow 🤯
If you want to read one book this year that makes you think, think, and think a little longer and harder - it’s The Code of Us.
The story of Mia and Arden is spellbinding. I’m not usually a fan of time-skips in novels, but the way Liv Evans tells this story is masterful. There is not a moment that isn’t pivotal to the entire story and Liv does every single one of them justice.
The love between Mia and Arden is told with nuance and I found myself falling in love with them as their story unfolded 💕
The story is focused on a court battle that is about defining the difference of replicated intelligence (a type/branch of AI) and when or if “it” should be considered human, or have human rights. Interspersed with skipping back in time and learning all about the story of Mia and Arden, from the moment they met to the present day.
I spent most of my days - because, yes, I couldn’t put this down - on the edge of my seat. I even let my tea go cold once 😱
And then the culmination, when the verdict is read and Mia and Arden are finally alone after all that has transpired, Liv throws in a twist that ripped my heart to pieces while also feeling like the absolutely perfect resolution - not ending, because Mia and Arden now live rent-free in my mind - that makes this book a masterpiece.

The code of us is an amazing story, one that will bring joy and sadness to your heart.
The story of Mia and Arlen is a beautiful one. It all begins with the start of the court case between Dr Mia Drew and Synthesis Labs. Mia’s story unravels from there. With trips between past and the present, we discover what has happened.
Liv has written such a beautiful story of love and heart break. What she writes is so close to what could happen in our current world and addressed those issues around gender. I really enjoyed this story and wish there was a part 2. I need to know what happens next in Mia’s world.

I am still left with questions to which I wish I had answers, but is there really a truer reflection of the human experience than that?

Let's just start at the ending – OMG!! Then that beginning!!! Straight away it was captivating in it's unusual subject, just hinted at but already sending my imagination reeling. Then all the bits in between!!!
By now anyone following me would know I am a huge Liv Evans fan. What I love the most about her stories are the wonderful way the relationships of her characters develop. Each chapter adds another layer to their lives and slowly we come to know and love them. This is a story about two people and their love for each other. Through a series of flashbacks their lives are revealed, from the beginning to the present and the court case. Through the writing you feel how much they love each other as well as their pain, their frustration and longing. In just 175 pages, these complete strangers are turned into two people, very real and whose lives you are totally invested in.
The book jumps back and forth from the present day and the court case to aspects of Mia and Arden's lives. The parts of the story from the past are relevant to that section of the court case. This was a clever way to gradually introduce the characters and helps to explain the circumstances surrounding the court case and the testimony of that particular witness. It was not in any chronological order but was not at all difficult to grasp. In fact it made the whole story more compelling as it revealed only bits and pieces of the whole story. In this way there were surprises all the way through the book and at no time was it predictable.
The whole idea behind Mia's research and experimentation is mind-blowing. It gives a sense of being set in the future, but we are brought back to our time by the cars, motorbikes and other present day items. By the end of the book, as is pointed out, the possibility of it becoming a reality is not out of the question. Though it is a science based story, at no time did I feel that it went over my head and confused me. Arden's art motivations had just as deep a meaning as the science and I felt this was a interesting contrast between both these characters and the work they produced.
I feel that I am rambling, but it just so difficult to find the right words to describe this fabulous story. Some words that do come to mind : emotional, thought-provoking (on so many levels), heartbreaking and even a bit steamy.
I can thoroughly recommend this book to anyone who likes a story about people and their complicated lives with a science fiction edge.

Gripping and Prescient. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
The best books make me both feel and think deeply. The Code of Us by Liv Evans has done so to such a degree that I will not do it justice here.
Mia, a dedicated neuropsychologist, researches artificial intelligence. Her husband, Arden, creates beautiful sculptures out of things people throw away. Their devoted love story serves as the steadfast anchor for a novel that throws into question everything we may think we know about cognition, memory, technology, relationship, and evolution–about how we think and feel about humanity itself. When he sustains life-threatening injuries in a car accident, she uses her nascent yet fully functional technology to save him. Told in alternating present day and flashback, a complex journey of loving intentions, ethical dilemma, grief and loss, unintended consequences, and social implication unfolds.
While the plot engages, stimulates, and challenges me intellectually, it’s the emotional and relational evocativeness–the human(e) relatability–that makes this book an instant treasure in my library. In a mere 188 pages (5:37 hours, narrated by the multitalented Jodie Harris and Steve West), Evans examines–presciently, brilliantly–myriad potential complications and consequences of artificial intelligence–intellectual, social, legal, psychological, and corporeal, among others.
Be warned: The Code of Us is not a romance novel, despite its love story core. The book does not end happily, though the end of the book is not necessarily the end of the story. It took a few days for me to identify all of my emotions, led by sadness in depth and intensity. Liv Evans summons, with incredible economy of language, a viscerally, if not cognitively coherent (and thus quintessentially human) cacophony of feelings that at once proves the undeniable shared humanity that fiction evokes, and yet wholly defies full articulation. Overall, hope wins over sadness for me, and I will return to this book in the future, no question.

بعيد عن المزح رواية شدتني بفكرتها أكثر من أي شيء اخر برغم نوع ذا مش تايب حقي ابدااا… فكرة إنك تكسر القواعد عشان تنقذ الشخص اللي تحبه ذي كانت دائما احب يقوم بها ابطال رواياتي لكن لما لقيت العكس أنغرمت طبعا.
الجانب العلمي كان مختلف وأضاف ثقل للقصة.. حبيت كيف الكاتبة ركزت على فكرة: إلى أي مدى ممكن نروح عشان اللي نحبهم؟ هل الحب يبرر كل شيء؟ هنا القصة تخليني أفكر أكثر مما تخليني بس أتأثر... برغم ما احب شغل دماغي لما اقرا بس رواية ذي إستثناء بدأتها ماقدرت أسحب الا لما خلصتها
العلاقة بين ميا و أردن كانت مؤثرة فيها ألم وحيرة وتناقض ما حسيت إنه في مثالية زايدة بالعكس في واقعية موجعة... النهاية ما كانت خيالية لكنها كانت مرضية بطريقة هادئة ... على كل حال رواية كانت تجربة حلوة

This is a stand out book...five stars... amazing....and heres why...
We follow Mia and Arden Drew a couple in love. However after a car accident that almost kills Arden, Mia working as a neuropsychologist decides to put her research project into action.
In doing so she implants a microchip in Arden's brain which runs a Replicated Intelligence Program and Arden becomes Arden...but not Arden.....enough said.
Evans does such an amazing job of using flashbacks and present time to flick between a court case and Mia and Arden's past - including Mia's work on her research project.
What's so great is that although there is some 'science stuff' here and there it's done through the characters and you can easily follow what's going on and why.
This is definitely an adult book with adult scenes, imagery and themes.
Liv Evans has constructed this awesome story that is so tightly written and clear it holds you until the very end. It's one that you'll think about for days...who was right? Who was wrong? You decide.

3.5 stars. A beautiful love story involving having to decide how far one would go to save the love of their life. The only issue I had was the sex scene on page 72. clearly, these 2 are anorexic little people with the flexibility of world class gymnast.Who manages him in the drivers seat she straddles him, then he puts her on her back him on top, then him between her legs whilst sitting in the footwell without ending up with a steering wheel or handbrake or gear stick injury? Or did they climb out of the car change position each time? Yep, I know I'm thinking way too much about the logistics of this scene. Bahaha.

This book was so different from what I usually read and I absolutely loved it!

The story is really intense and thought provoking, raising some really interesting ethical questions around AI and RI (replicated intelligence). I won’t go into the storyline because I went in blind and really enjoyed discovering it for myself.
Despite the complicated subject matter and jumping timeline, Liv effortlessly makes the story easy to follow with rich and descriptive writing. All of the characters were really well developed and you could truly feel all their emotions.
🎧 I listed to this as an audiobook. Jodie Harris and Steve West were incredible at bringing these characters to life.

Despite the complicated subject matter and jumping timeline, Liv effortlessly makes the story easy to follow with rich and descriptive writing. All of the characters were really well developed and you could truly feel all their emotions.
🎧 I listed to this as an audiobook. Jodie Harris and Steve West were incredible at bringing these characters to life.
