Interesting but no depth. The bully keeps physically hurting the heroine but she doesn’t say anything? The ghosts are causing all sorts of problems but no reason or resolution. Romances started and hinted at but not developed. Teenager possessed and thread dropped. Hints of what happened to Dad but no follow up. Storylines started and dropped no completion. Trouble with Grandma, trouble with family, ghost hunters a thing? New guy appears and immediately involved, characters introduced then forgotten. Serious injury overlooked. Twice married adult does not know why she has these feelings. Shallow

I was sent a free copy of The Ghost’s Call to beta read. I got so caught up in the story, I actually had to re start the book to be able to make useful notes!

The story follows a mother and teenage daughter duo, Niamh and Edie, who have the ability to see ghosts. They‘ve recently had to move back to their hometown after a messy divorce. The plot kicks off with a mass ghost sighting. Both mother and daughter start investigating the incident separately, as Niamh doesn’t think Edie should take up ghost hunting so young.

I love how the author wove in bits of the town’s real history into the plot. There’s so much we don’t know about the places we live, so it was really interesting to see a British location that wasn’t one of the usual big cities. The mother-daughter relationship was really well written, showing both the love and frustration of having to deal with each other’s differing expectations. Also, Tilly the Westie is such an adorable character!

The book started really nice, but at an certain point i had the struggle to continue reading it. But after the camera part and the seances and exorcisme part started, i wanted to know how it would end. I could stop reading it anymore.

I got this book for free on amazon with kindle day, and now im definitely gonna buy the rest of the serie.

If you’re looking for your next paranormal women’s fiction read, look no further! Packed with a solid plot, fantastic and real characters and a solid amount of hilarious banter and wit, GHOST CALL delivers in the genre time and time again. Written in dual PoV from single mom Niamh and teenager Edie, the story unfolds with a ghost mystery and a too-cute Westie dog (you know I love animals in fiction!) that steals the show with her adorableness. I loved Niamh and Edie’s relationship because of how relatable and realistic it is. Their interactions and semi-feud as Edie tries to learn the art of ghost hunting (while mom Niamh wants her far far farrrrrr away from it) are totally on point & I can’t wait to see where the rest of the series goes!

A mother/daughter ghost-hunting team scramble to set things right when ghosts haunt Hucknall, their hometown.

Unsurprisingly given the title, this book was more a paranormal and less a cosy. I enjoyed the plot but felt that the tone aimed the book toward an audience of the daughter's age rather than the mother's. The switching of the narration between two characters was not a problem for me (a device that I've seen in more books recently) though I would have preferred a single voice.

Interesting theme in this book. A mother ghost hunter and a daughter who wants to join her. Family dramas and a weak ending. But not bad at all. I will read the other 3 books in this series. The story might develop better by then.

This was an easy read once I actually sat down to read it. It took some getting use to the perspective changing from mother to daughter. Overall a good read that you want to finish. I am unhappy about the ending though which seemed rather abrupt. Off to read the second book in the series to see if questions from the first book are answered.

Amazing characters and story. Really love the mother daughter bond and the unique ghost lore used, all while being a great easy read.

A Fast-Paced Tale with Unforgettable Moments

K.C. Adams' "The Ghost's Call" offers a gripping, fast read that keeps you hooked from start to finish. However, the character Josh was frustratingly dismissive, particularly in his disbelief of Edie's experiences with the bullies. This aspect detracted from the overall enjoyment of the story. On the bright side, the book delivers some memorable lines, with my favorite being, “A little bit of anxiety never killed anyone.” Edie scoffed. “A little bit might not have, but a lot sure stopped them from living.” This quote perfectly encapsulates the emotional depth that Adams weaves into the narrative. Despite its flaws, "The Ghost's Call" is a compelling read that fans of supernatural fiction will appreciate.

It took a little while to get into this book, but when I did it was a satisfying read.
The concept of the story was interesting, but I was disappointed with the ending which was quite abrupt - I suspect it would rollover into the second book in the series, but at this stage I'm a bit on the fence regarding reading the other books.
I enjoyed the characters, the mother/daughter relationship between Niamh and Edie was well developed and read as a typically angst-ridden adult/teenager situation, exacerbated by Niamh's fears for her daughter as she has developed the same 'skills' as her mother holds. (I won't go into too much here for fear of spoiling the story for others.)
There wasn't a lot of description regarding settings and surroundings and I think the book would have benefited from a little more fleshing out in that regard.
My biggest bugbear with the book was the amount of typos I came across - duplicates of words, incorrect spelling choice for some words, and in some instances I had to go back and reread paragraphs over and over again because they'd been worded quite badly. In some instances I had the impression that the book had started in third person and been changed to first person - however that may also have been caused by poor word choices.
Overall, it's a good read and kept me interested through to the end, but I'm still up in the air regarding whether I'll continue the series.

This novel offers an engaging set up: a mother and daughter who can see ghosts. The mother used to be a ghost hunter but is very protective of her daughter getting involved in the same business after her husband was killed hunting ghosts (although we never find out how).

The story begins with a cataclysmic event in the town; an earthquake that appears to release a large number of ghosts. The rest of the book is spent dealing with some of the aftermath although it does not resolve the true cause of these events.

The characters are compelling and interesting although the POV switches each chapter between the mother and the daughter. To my mind, their POV’s were not sufficiently distinct and the switching revealed plot points that never got resolved (the videos in the park, the possessed teen, consequences for the bully).

I could mostly pick up the through line from the plot points to the big moment near the end although not everything was 100% clear. The amount of attention paid to the dog and the mother’s and daughter’s romantic wishes also was greater than the payoff for either.

Overall, an interesting premise pretty well written.

Will read the next book in the series to see if some of these storylines are resolved.

There are very few books I have read that I can say I never wanted to put it down. This is one of them & that was just while I was fortunate enough to beta read the story. I have been impatiently waiting for it's release ever since.

At its heart the book is about family. A mother who would do anything to protect her daughter & keep her from the pain & heartbreak that can come with gifts like theirs. Niamh knkws how dangerous the ghost hunting world can be & doesn't want anything to happen to Edie. This is hard though when all Edie wants to do is embrace her gifts & help. Then the ghosts pick her to pass messages on.

Beyond the family element is friendship & a touch of romance. At this stage the romance is more at a crush level. I imagine the love story will grow as the series progresses.

Then you have the supernatural side. For a first novel in the fantasy genre, Kristina doesn't disappoint. Her experience as a writer & passion for the genre & her characters shine through. There are twists along the way & unanswered questions by the end but that only adds to the charm of the story. While also leaving the reader wanting more. One hopes Book #2 won't be too far behind.

⭐⭐⭐ /5
Paranormal / YA (No cursing, no spice so while it's not categorized as YA, it's YA) / mystery / Fantasy
categorized as British horror fiction, I disagree.

I feel like three stars are very generous, but I am rating it based on looking at it as a YA book, even though it was not marketed that way.

Something rubbed me wrong with this book.

The way the mother treated the daughter maybe? IDK!

Maybe 17 going on 18 in the UK is different than in the US? Their relationship reminded me of a Reddit story. " AITA My adult daughter doesn't talk to me anymore and I don't know why." I mean there was growth and all but, yuck. It would have been much more believable if the daughter and friends were 12-15 and in high school, not "college" Then the situation, the mother's character and overprotectiveness, and attitude would have been better suited.

In the end, there were just too many unanswered questions and plot holes. Even though it is a series, there wasn't enough in this book to make me want to read book two to get answers for things that should have already been divulged.

The mother is a ghost hunter, at least she was until ghosts killed her husband, and her daughter, just finishing college can both see ghosts. One day they notice the sky is filled with ghosts. Then animals start acting strangely toward owners and some people also begin to act strangely. The the daughter’s best friend’s grandfather dies and arrives with a message of warning for the boys family which are also family friends. Soon investigations begin and eventually the source of all the ghosts is identifies. When the family friend’s daughter begins acting out and behaving quite strangely mother and daughter try an exorcism which fails! Turns out she is possessed of a demon and it takes a bit more to get him out.. it is a good story, unfortunately it doesn’t end at the end of the book. It leads quite naturally to presumably the next book in series. I personally hate stories that don’t wrap up at least the current problem completely. I love series but I want each story to be stand alone.

I was given the book to review and absolutely loved it. I think Kristina is onto a new supernatural genre to write or the paranormal genre.

Ghost Call follows a mother daughter duo team Niamh and Edie. Niamh wants to keep Edie from the supernatural world of seeing ghost but unbeknownst to her Edie has been seeing ghosts for most of her life. The story follows a typical mother and her teenage daughter Edie trying to find themselves in the world after dealing with a family event. Niamh is also struggling with Edie growing up and what she can handle or should be able to handle.

Both are faced to deal with death and familiar ghosts coming back to help and give clues on how to solve a family and personal problem. If you like paranormal, mystery and some
amazing ghosts. You don’t want to miss this one.

I gave this 2 stars first but decided I could have been too harsh.
It took me longer to read this than usual - just not interesting. A few times I said "here we go!" and thought it was going to make an upturn - the possessed teen - what happened? No finality in this and a few other points in the book. We don't find out what these hauntings and possessions were caused by (perhaps a sinkhole but no details about who the ghosts may have been), who is this "demon"? I would have liked to know the backstory of it and why an advanced demon would choose a little girl?
Also, these were the easiest exorcisms I have ever heard of...

I think this should be geared to young readers, it was just too simplistic and the Josh/Edie story was cute but not much depth for mature readers.

I was curious about this new series by Kristina Adams as it is a totally different genre to her previous series and I wasn't disappointed. From the very first chapter you are sucked into the story and characters. Having the story told from both the Mum and the daughters viewpoint is great as it enables you to see both sides and understand why the characters are the way they are. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and couldn't put it down. I would recommend it to anyone, even if this isn't your normal genre of choice. I am now completely invested in Niamh and Edie and their story and so I am impatiently waiting for the next installment!

I enjoyed the characters and the story line, but...I don't know. Maybe I felt it read more like a teen/young adult story. Maybe it is. I didn't check.
I kept skipping long conversations and other stuff to get to the action.

I did fear that Dominic would take Josh's place. I felt that if the story went on maybe Dominic could be helpful and a friend and even find a love interest, but it would be heartbreaking to have Josh and Edie not together.
Tilly is the greatest.
Ben is a Librarian, so how could name his Scottie, Scot. ..lol

I can't see how the whole town isn't going to end up knowing considering how many Ghosts are around. Big problems ahead.

Overall nice reads, it has a cliffhanger ending for the case and some backstory.
I wish Edie show her mom the video result of the spy camera, it seems she do that for nothing.
As main character, Niamh is too strict and overprotective about Edie which understandable but i was exhausted with their constant bickering.
Niamh change of heart was such a leap, from prohibiting to urging Edie to doing the exorcism by herself. It's too sudden and feel baseless.
For side character, i love Mr. Brightman character and his interaction with Niamh :)

MUST READ SERIES!!!!! This is the first book in what is a page turner series and I couldn’t put it down! If you are fans of Supernatural and Charmed, you will fall in love with this series just as I have. These wonderful characters pull you right in as they deal with the ghosts inhabiting this quaint town. These characters are so well written that you become immersed in their lives and feel like you too are a part of this group. I’m glad I found this series when I did so I was able to jump right into the next book in the series!

The story of Niamh and Edie, along with Maggie and her family, sort of had a hint of Gilmore Girls vibes mixed in with the paranormal. I actually found myself reaching for this book more than another book I was reading. In fact, I would reach for this one instead. The book itself could have used a little more editing and a more heightened climax. I almost felt like it built up and up and then just sort of petered out at the moment it needed to really HIT. The storyline, world in which it happens, and the characters still makes this a truly good read.

This is the first book in the Afterlife Calls series by K.C. Adams. Niamh is a widowed single parent and retired ghost hunter and she is determined to keep her seventeen-year old daughter Edie away from the dangerous world of ghost hunting. When Niamh's hometown is haunted by a rising tide of paranormal activity, Edie receives an important message from a ghost forcing Niamh and Edie to face the challenges of the supernatural together. Niamh and Edie must race against time to protect their loved ones. I really enjoyed this fantastic paranormal mystery novel.

What happens when ghosts invade your town?

It felt like an earthquake. Looking out I saw hundreds of ghosts rising up to the sky. Why? Being an ex~ghost hunter, I knew there was trouble brewing.
People being possessed, strange events, my daughter dealing with ghosts were just a few things that needed to be resolved.
Interesting book, read it for fun, and keep the ghosts at bay.

Really Can’t Recommend

More suited to young adults or beginning readers. There’s just not enough meat in the content to warrant reading more of the series. Not a lot of depth to the characters. Scene settings are lacking. I could get past the British slang, but whoever edited this story ought to quit. They did a mass replace of “school” with “college”. Every chapter involved going to or coming from “college”. What a clumsy way; which stiffened the flow of the storyline.

The mc is only forty but the way the writer describes her makes her sound more like a sixty year old. I'm even older than sixty and I still don't have all the creaking bones, aches and pains and general physical issues that the mc has.

Add that to the unfinished storylines, the repeated (ad nauseum!) use of the word college and the annoying character of the mc and I definitely won't be reading any more of this series.

Fun plot

The story line was fun, definitely a YA book. A pass with a professional editor would help with the writing. Rather amateur, and inconsistent.
The author made Edie and Josh's "college" sound like they were in middle school, with first period, etc. There are no periods in college.
Also, sometimes the chapter heading was labeled "Edie" but it was really her mom's point of view.

Not a bad read, but it had no depth. Half finished theories, bullies not getting their comeuppance, a swarm of ghosts introduced but nothing done about them.
More time was spent talking about their little dog than actually embracing the fact that they could have helped dozens of ghosts pass over during the course of this book, but didn't.
Also a fair few typos, especially at the beginning of the book.

I picked this up for free during a Kindle promo and honestly, I'm glad I did.. May or may not have already bought the rest of the series! The story has a cozy and addictive vibe with a mix of teenage and adult angst that really kind of hit home.. Some original twists kept things interesting, and it was super easy to get wrapped up in the world.. The ending did feel a little abrupt, but I’m guessing Book 2 picks up the thread.. Can’t wait to see where it goes next!
