The Solnyshko Duet #1

The Kidnapping of Roan Sinclair

Rate this book
Roan Sinclair’s life is perfect, just ask anyone. Set to graduate college and bound for grad school at Georgetown, Roan’s life has been all planned out for him. Except, he doesn’t want it. Dedicated to his music, he dreams of a life free from his parents’ expectations. Those dreams are gone the minute he’s kidnapped by a group of Russians, led by the tall, dark, and broody Sasha — a man ripped straight from Roan’s fantasies. Determined to make it out alive, Roan will do whatever is necessary to secure his freedom, even if that means seducing his captor.

Aleksandr Vassiliev doesn’t care about anything except surviving in a merciless world. Known as the Wolf of Verkhoyansk, Sasha’s reputation for brutality is far-reaching and well-deserved. When a bank robbery goes wrong, he’ll do whatever he can to fix it — including kidnapping the bank owner’s son. Instead of complying like he should, Roan defies Sasha at every turn. Worst of all, he makes Sasha want things he can’t have, things that are a death sentence for men like him. Things like Roan Sinclair.

Content warning: This book contains references to alcohol/drug use, sexual assault, graphic violence, self-harm, ethnic and homosexual slurs, and a lot of profanity. Reader discretion is advised.

International best-selling and award-winning author Ashlyn Drewek has always been fascinated by "weird" things like Edgar Allan Poe, Halloween, and witchcraft. Not necessarily in that order. This was a fantastic Dark Romance featuring a captor/captive element that was refreshing and kept the story interesting throughout. I also enjoyed the power changes and imbalance that alternated between both main characters.

Also due to having dual POVs, I was able to fully understand both Roan's and Sasha's perspectives on their unique situation that forces them into compromising situations that reveal their intense feelings for one another that grows throughout this story.

Overall I loved this addictive story featuring the fascinating relationship between Roan and Sasha that has me excited about future stories from this author.

Nah, I'm sorry, but what an absolute disappointment this was. I can honestly say this started out pretty okay to me: the characters had potential and the set-up was great. However, the execution was so weak and so annoying. The 'love' here is also nothing more than lust.

The dude who got kidnapped, Roan, was a 22 year old with a supposedly 'sunshine personality' and charismatic vibe. And I guess I could see that description fitting him before he got kidnapped: he was kind, stood up for people and was just an overall likable person. However, the moment he got kidnapped he turned into a horny idiot. Dude did not seem to understand the dire situation he was in, and seemed more preoccupied with his 'hot captor' than he did with actually making it out of there alive. Roan was popping boners left and right, and was always ready for some sex, no matter the shitty treatment he received.

And that brings me to his kidnapper, Sasha: This dude was an absolute arsehole. And not just because he is a ruthless killer with no moral conscience. After all, we all know that's just the kind of love interest you get with a dark romance; and I'm okay with that. What I'm not okay with, however, is when the arsehole is also an arsehole to his love interest. He had little to no redeeming qualities and god only knows why Roan was so obsessed with him. Sacha treated Roan like scum, often ignored him, showed him zero respect or affection, repeatedly beat him and caused him physical harm more than once. He was not a swoon-worthy 'bad-guy' love interest to me. The internalized homophobia also annoyed me to no end.

The romance really didn't do it for me. There was no connection between Roan and Sacha: everything was superficial and surface level. Their entire 'relationship' was based on sex, and it took Sacha forever to even acknowledge they were anything more to each other than captor and captive. I genuinely wanted Roan to put him in his place multiple times, but alas, that never happened. Roan was too weak, and Sacha was too much of a dickhead.

The story got a little better near the end with the whole 'revenge' thing and after Roan and Sacha actually 'get together', but it still wasn't great.

I can't remember the last time I READ a full novel. It's been all about the audio, but this story sucked me in right away. It helps that the writing is straightforward and non-repetitive. Descriptions aren't overdone, and the dialogue is smooth without nonsensical banter. I am so onboard for reading more by Ashlyn Drewek.

As for the story, the author....dang...she. does. not. hold. back. Sasha is an unapologetic brutal killer...a true anti-hero. I don't care that some suspension of belief is required. This is definitely one of my favorite MM dark organized crime stories. It had it all, violence, suspension, action, steam and a happy for now ending. I am so looking forward to continuing Sasha and Roan's story!

Told in dual POV, 1st person, it’s the first installment in "The Solnyshko" duet and it’s cliffy. This is my first read by this author and I totally enjoyed it. I liked the writing, loved the characters. The plot is a bit dark but the characters have a sense of humor. Roan & Sasha fit together; Roan is a free spirit and Sasha is dark, hard, and a bit grumpy. The only thing he knows is violence, not emotions let alone loving someone. Roan is light to Sasha’s dark. They both are obsessed with each other, Sasha more than Roan. Can’t wait to see how their story is going to end. All in all, it was an enjoyable read and hope you enjoy it as well but proceed with caution!

I couldn’t stop laughing while reading this book. It was not at all what I was expecting. It definitely wasn’t as dark as I wanted it to be.

Okay so; we have Roan Sinclair : sad rich boy who doesn’t get enough attention from his parents. Hates his father because he likes music but his father doesn’t.

Aleksandr Vassiliev, popularly known as Sasha : in the Russian mafia/ mob. Gay but hates himself for it. Major chip on his shoulder. Has cool tattoos. Known as “the wolf” in the crime world.

Now the story :

🐺Sasha kidnaps Roan and uses him as a bargaining chip with Roan’s father. HA little did he know that Roan’s father couldn’t give a shit about him
🐺Sasha grunts every time Roan asks him questions
🐺Roan gives Sasha a blowjob ( because he just wanted to )
🐺Sasha breaks Roan’s jaw ( he wanted Roan to stop talking )
🐺Sasha gets angry because Roan stopped talking to him
🐺They make out
🐺- Stockholm syndrome -
🐺Roan escapes
🐺Roan finds Sasha and negotiates because he hates his dad and wants him to suffer
🐺-getting feelings -
🐺*insert cliché homophobic slurs from mob*
🐺Sasha kills everyone who wronged Roan

Soo yeah. This was honestly a very entertaining read. Like I didn’t love this obviously. But so much was happening. Which reminds me

TW: rape, violence, graphic scenes of killing and murders

- Roan does get raped towards the end of the book, it’s not graphic nor is the entire scene detailed but we do read about the beginning of it and scenes of him in the hospital.

Like I said, this wasn’t really a dark romance. the murders made it a dark book but the romance itself felt more like a college romance with a closeted jock. But I genuinely really liked Sasha. He was the “bad boy with tattoos and loves killing” but deep down he was a soft boy, who’s both dominant and craves Roan’s attention .

I found the answer in Roan’s wide blue eyes. Keeping my gaze locked on his, I dropped to one knee and then the other, facing him and him alone. The ultimate position of submission, the sacrifice of my pride, and the loudest declaration of my feelings for the boy in front of me. If I was going to die, at least it would be on my terms.
“I kneel for no one,” I repeated, gazing up at Roan, “except the one I love.”

OVERALL: would I recommend this? Probably not, its not really a memorable book so it wouldn’t really come to mind. But this was still fun so defiantly something to pick up if you want something to read in one sitting ( be aware that there are like 50 chapters and I read it all in one day. The chapters are however pretty short )
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review

Wow wow wow! I thought I would love this one based on the premise and the cover (c’mon, it’s gorg) but it was so much more than I expected! And it was my first time reading anything by this author.

I thought the kidnapping would be the main focus of the book, but in reality it was only a small part. The characters of Roan and Sasha were rich and it was great seeing them blossom as a couple, and individuals, as I continued to read.

The relationship was probably unhealthy - I mean, Sasha is responsible for kidnapping Roan, after all - but that’s why I loved it. Roan was able to help Sasha grow into a man who was able to love another man and lemme tell ya, his internalized homophobia made me so sad.

And Sasha’s Ukrainian neighbour? MY FAVORITE! What a wonderful old lady! 😂

I wonder if we’ll get anything written about Misha because I am thoroughly intrigued!

Second reread- Feb 2022

***4.0 rating***

“I kneel for no one,” I repeated, gazing up at Roan, “except the one I love.”

The fact that I gave this book a 3.5 rating the first time I read it 🤡🤡.

Second time around tho, I am glad to say it was a whole different experience. I really enjoyed it. I am just wondering if me, myself and I read the same book back in November?🤡

Like come again?

The first time I read it, I was new to reading very dark triggering romance books but now that I am a shall I say a more experienced reader in that field, 😂 I had no issues with this book.

Yes, it can be triggering but the author warns the reader before the book, so you know what you are getting yourself into.

I loved Roan and Sasha during the second re-read. Sasha is what you would call "sweet but psycho" 🤣 I love how badass he is and how protective he eventually became of Roan.

Together these two 😍 are 🔥🔥.

Misha is having me wonder if he is part of the 🏳️‍🌈 community 🧐. I cannot tell with him. What an interesting character.

What hasn't changed tho after re-reading this book is my hatred for Roan's father. You can kick rocks sir. Good day. I hope in the second book we get rid of him😤.

I still cannot stand Frankie and I was here for Freddy telling that bish off 🤣. I totally forgot about Freddy but I am glad to have been reunited with this silent hero.

All in all, idc if this couple started out toxic, I loved their chemistry and intensity. Book 2 here I come 💕🚴🚴!

3.5 rating

This was an alright read.

It had many triggering factors as one would expect from a dark romance story.

The author even says it before the story begins:

"A warning to the reader — this book contains references to alcohol/drug use, sexual assault, graphic violence, self-harm, ethnic and homosexual slurs, and a lot of profanity. Reader discretion is advised."

You are warned as a reader so you know what you are getting yourself into.

The stockholm syndrome was strong with this one. The plot was unrealistic which is alright since its just a story but it could have been executed better. Didnt feel like much was going on tbh besides the romance.

Sasha and Roan were hot together but also toxic af.

"To be wanted with such intensity was intoxicating. Infuriating at times, but intoxicating nonetheless. It might have been crazy — no, it was crazy and probably unhealthy and toxic and all the things I shouldn’t want… but I did. I wanted Sasha and even if he never admitted it, I knew he wanted me just as much.

Idk the way they got together didnt feel right. Sasha knocked Roan out of consciousness multiple times that was kind of triggering. Then how Roan got over the kidnapping and was in love with Sasha the russian mobster who kidnapped him so fast was not my cup of tea.

And I know the author warned the readers in the beginning but my poor baby Roan did not deserve what happened to him. Sweet Roan😭.

I was warned about the violence but that is on me for reading it anyways.

Maybe this one was not for me. The did have steamy scenes together but thats the only thing I enjoyed. Maybe its not the book...its me.

🤷‍♀️

Onto to the next read.

DNF at 63%... This is the less realistic kidnapping shit I've read in ma life!!! 🤣🤣

And I couldn't go on anymore, I actually liked the beginning, Roan seemed like a really interesting guy but then he got kidnapped and it was just really funny in a bad way, the plot was weak as hell to me, kidnappers don't act that way and if they do they are not good at their jobs.

Considering that one of the main guys was a kidnapper, who gave me whiplash with his train of thought btw, he wasn't really good at his job, he let his emotions get in the way, he made so many mistakes and he was supposed to be a really frightening killer, but Ronan wasn't scared of him *eyeroll* if he was it would have been more fun and realistic.

In the end, I like my mean guys cold and focused and my plot a little bit more realistic than this. So yeah, I won't continue. 🤣🤣

TW (stated in the beginning of the book):

I had another decision to make, and quickly. I found the answer in Roan's wide blue eyes. Keeping my gaze locked on his, I dropped to one knee and then the other, facing him and him alone. The ultimate possession of submission, the sacrifice of my pride, and the loudest declaration of my feelings for the boy in front of me. If I was going to die, at least it would be on my terms.
❝I kneel for no one,❞ I repeated, gazing up at Roan, ❝except the one I love.❞

omg, these two!! it took me a while to get into the book (the moment Sasha broke Roan's jaw and Roan started ignoring him was when the story piqued my interest 🤣) but, once i did, i was completely invested in Sasha and Roan. 🥺 in a way, Sasha's internal conflict with himself felt realistic to where i wasn't frustrated with him being hot and cold BUT!! i felt so proud of him once he finally learned to accept who he was and realized his love for Roan. i wish we had more cute moments between them (they had cute banters in the second half and i craved more of it), but i ate up Sasha's possessiveness and the scene when he had a killing spree bc of what happened to Roan? LOVED IT. sorry, but those fuckers had it coming. 🙄 i'm not too upset with .

also, can we please have Misha's story?? i was intrigued by him. 👀

"To be wanted with such intensity was intoxicating. Infuriating at times, but intoxicating nonetheless."

Ashlyn Drewek is a new-to-me author and what a first book to start with 💙🖤.

The Kidnapping of Roan Sinclair was excellent, but as is often the case when I find myself absorbed in a book, it ended way too abruptly! I'm not sure whether there will be a sequel to this one, but if not, I could have gone several more chapters to tie up all the loose ends.

This is a dark m/m romance and I use the term romance loosely, as there are a LOT of triggers to watch out for. BUT this is definitely a love story too for Roan and Sasha, albeit starting with a kidnapping, a group of brutal Russians, gang warfare, a whole load of violence and angst, and a disproportionate case of opposites attracting.

I loved Roan, he was innocent and gutsy and strong and so highly principled, but.......I always have a thing for the broken bad guys with all the issues, and Sasha is it and a bit for me!

Highly recommended if you're fine with the triggers.

5 dark ✨✨✨✨

It was crazy, but for once I saw something in my future beyond pain and death-life. Because of him. For me, Roan was the sun, the center of my universe, the thing that gave me life. Without it, without him, I'd surely wither and die.

did i fall for the fucked up/bad guy again? hell yes. i lived. i thrived. i gagged. this book was brutal down to the core. i thought me myself wouldn't survive it. this a new author to me this is the first time of seeing her name so i obviously checked her profile. turns out ashlyn drewek is a fan of dark macabre things. well, it shows! god, it shows. some of her scenes here probably scarred my brain. i wouldn't go far and say this book is one of the best books that i have read but i must say it was this nonstop roller coaster of action after action. definitely no dull moment! i love how this story is more than a kidnapping of roan sinclair. just a lot of things happened after like the 50% mark. as for the romance between sasha and roan, i shamelessly dig it. even when sasha punched roan hard in the face that gave him concussion. these two characters went to hell and back for each other. the last chapters of this book made my blood boil. why 4 stars? i highly enjoyed this but there were little bits of the story that got me questioning. these weren't completely bad but still got me confused and wanting for more. ashlyn drewek can end the story here but damn i'll probably cry tears of joy if she manages to continue sasha and roan's story. i need them being lovey dovey!

I refused to let myself to make another sound. To make sure I didn't, I bit my lip so hard I drew blood. I stopped hoping for a miracle. Instead, I prayed for death.

I've been reading so many mediocre romances lately that I've started telling myself that maybe my reading tastes are just changing. Then this book comes along, grabs me by the throat, highjacks my soul for a day and a half, then dares me to say that stupid shit again. This was phenomenal, easily one of my favorites for the year... and there's still another book?! 🫠💙

5/5 ⭐ I loved it!

This book thoroughly satisfied my expectations ♥️ Hence, my five stars🌟 I've grown fond of Ashlyn Drewek's writing style. It's pleasant and readable, such a quick read despite it's length. I consider this is one of the best traits a book could possesses because what better than be left wanting more and more and not having enough of it😚 That was my experience reading this awesome dark novel. I must emphasize that, because of there were unnerving times reading this and I've dealt with the shedding tears 💧

The Kidnapping of Roan Sinclair is the first installment from "The Solnyshko Duet" series, which tells the love story between Roan and Sasha, as well known by the Wolf. Roan is an only child who belongs to a wealthy family, but he is plenty dedicated to his music in spite of his father's rejection and frustrated expectations. On the other hand it is Sasha, whose real name is Aleksandr, a russian man who is linked to the russian mafia and he'll be involved a bank robbery which will bond his destiny to Roan's.

Positives:
✔️ The slow burn feels real: here we have the enemies-to-lovers trope mixed with dark romance🖤, so there are some brute traits between them which involve phisical damage until their attraction blooms and the later feelings. These facts are busted by the internalized homophobia suffered by Sasha.
✔️ Sasha—Aleksandr—is such a great character ♥️ He is also a hotty guy❤️‍🔥[not to say his tattoos], but damn he has a noticeable personality. He is a wolf, such a predator 🐺 He hates and loves fiercely. He is devoted to Roan once their feelings got stronger and he doesn't hesitate before destroying anyone who dares to hurt Roan 💔 Latter chapters are a heartbreaking roller-coaster.
✔️ I like the plot and how it's driven by Ashlyn Drewek. Maybe we can find some unrealistic points, but hell I've enjoyed this so far. I've into it! 😏

Negatives:
Frankie annoys me: sorry, but there are sentences and actions which I can't understand.
SPOILER
Roan is telling her dear friend his previous experience dealing with the russian mafia:

"Some asshole swung a knife at my face […] She looked like I drop-kicked a cat […] Oh my God! Why would he do that?" 🤡

Seriously, Frankie? 😑 We are talking about the mafia! Same when she confronted Sasha at the hospital, I seriously think that it's totally unrealistic. I would be terrified at least.

❌ The book ends 🥀

After all, I completely love this book ♥️  I'm not going to take long to read the following installment!

I saw something in my future beyond pain and death —life. Because of him. For me, Roan was the sun, the center of my universe, the thing that gave me life. Without it, without him, I’d surely wither away and die.

This is a really interesting book, hell of a premise and has a lot of potential. I really think this book had a solid run for what it wanted to be.

But I just feel like this book was too short and a bit too fast paced.

WHAT IN THE fuck just happened?!

That's literally what I had been saying mostly, about halfway this entire book. I just didn't understand how one move lead to another and just how a scene constructed itself (mainly the sexual scenes) because I was literally, deadass dumbfounded.

I was confused and I swear, if I took every move literally, VERY seriously (for what I'm known for) I would've been pissed off.

Also, Roan Sinclair.

You're brave, that's for sure.
But that's just me saying another word for being FUCKING STUPID.

I don't get that man seriously. I really don't get him, his intentions and his feelings. I just- I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND HIM.

He baffled me everytime and I love myself too much to considering cracking my head open.

Despite everything, I really did enjoy this book. I finished this in one night which is good enough for my sanity.

Ashlyn has incredible potential and I can't wait to see where she leads forward in her publishing journey and I would be up for reading another book of hers (especially if that concerns a delicious Russian known as Misha)

All in all, I would've given this book 4 stars but the ending just didn't do it for me. I really think the ending of this book isn't where this book should end (unless there's a sequel) I feel like the ending of this book was literally a beginning and it just felt cheap to end the book there.

I also felt like the two Male leads should've gotten the opportunity to get more closer. Despite the fact that one of them is very private and closeted, I still think both leads should've spent more time together, learn more about each other through their own words and not through someone else.

And I just don't think their story should've ended just yet. Especially considering what both of them went through and what lightened up their path moving forward.

Also,

The conflict at the end of this book, I understand why it was done and I see the perspective on both sides.

I still didn't like it and everytime I think about it, it makes my gut COIL.

Regardless of me endlessly denying the fact, I really did enjoy this book, I adore the chemistry, I love their banter, the writing and these two characters and I hope Ashlyn continues to write more about the characters in this universe and I can't wait to read her next work.

Sasha’s eyes may have been the color of ice, but all I felt was blazing lust when he looked at me. It radiated from his gaze, the hand in my hair, every thrust of his hips. No one had ever looked at me like that, like the sun rose and fucking set with me. It was thrilling, empowering. He wanted this — he wanted me.
Bad.

I really enjoyed Sasha's character. I just wish he was explored more, his wants, his beliefs, his past, his opinions etc etc etc. He was such an intriguing character, which just adds to the fact that this book really needed to be longer because I adore my crystal eyed Siberian.

“Is he supposed to be like the bogeyman?” I chuckled at Ivan’s wide-eyed expression.
He shook his head emphatically. “He’s worse.” The seriousness with which he answered gave me goosebumps. Terrified. I was officially back to being terrified.
“How so?”
Ivan blinked solemnly. “He’s real.”

“It’s not who he is, it’s just what he does to stay alive,”

Btw, Roan's father should go rot in hell, that disgusting excuse of a human beings.

“What if I just do it? What if I up and leave one of these days?”
He scoffed, not even bothering to look up.
“Be my guest.”

IMMEDIATE REACTION

What lies between the lines of delight, obnoxious satire and hell no?

More Quotes (be mindful of possible spoilers, you have been warned)

Sadness — or any feeling, really — didn’t register with me. The only acceptable feeling in my world was anger. Even if I did manage to feel something else, what purpose did it serve? I had no use for anything besides anger and indifference.

He was equally silent, watching me with a blank expression on his face. Every so often his jaw shifted to the side, the dark stubble drawing attention to how sharp his features were. If he wasn’t a fucking kidnapper, I would have said he was hot. Lie. He was hot, even if he was a kidnapper. But he lost major points for being a criminal.

Everyone always talked about “Fight or Flight,” but they didn’t mention the third option —“Freeze.”

Aleksandr Vassiliev
The Wolf of Verkhoyansk, the one who killed so savagely they couldn’t believe a man would do the things I did to another human.

I was on my way out when his voice stopped me in my tracks. “Thank you.” So quiet, I almost missed it. But he always said it. No matter who it was or what they brought, he said “thank you” every single time.

Between his refusal to talk and the permanent scowl etched on his face, I found myself getting caught up just watching him. The way he moved, the way he stood. He was huge and he knew it. He filled up every space with his hulking form, exuding alpha vibes simply by breathing. It’s probably why he didn’t have to say anything at the bank that day until the very end. A whistle was all he needed to summon people to his side, because even the criminals bowed down to him.

Tall, dark, and murdery were not admirable traits. He wasn’t even nice. Nice to look at, but not a nice person.

“Why a wolf? Is that some Russian thing?” Ivan shrugged, hooking his thumbs in his pockets. “I heard it was because when he was ten years old, he killed a man twice his age. They said he cut him into little pieces and fed him to his pet wolf.”

Black, empty, nothingness. That’s what I said I had to be. That’s what I was meant to be. A wolf. Man is wolf to man.

Despite his icy exterior, I’d come to associate Sasha with fire — a fiery touch, a fiery temper, and fiery passion when he let his guard down.

He was like a drug I couldn’t kick. I tried, and failed. I didn’t want to try anymore. I didn’t care if I went straight to Hell. Roan was the first good thing in my life and I wasn’t going to give him up.

“Why not?”

“I just... can’t.”

Admitting I couldn’t stay away from him almost gutted me, but actually staying away would have been a far worse pain. There were no words to explain it, it was just a feeling I had, the need to be near him. The only thing I could liken it to was the feeling you got in the dead of winter, when sunlight washed over you and held the cold at bay. I didn’t want to go back to the cold now that I knew I could feel something else, something better.

I had no idea what it meant to “be” Sasha’s, but the thought was thrilling, another display of his primal possessiveness. To be wanted with such intensity was intoxicating. Infuriating at times, but intoxicating nonetheless. It might have been crazy — no, it was crazy and probably unhealthy and toxic and all the things I shouldn’t want… but I did. I wanted Sasha and even if he never admitted it, I knew he wanted me just as much.

As long as I drew breath, he was mine, and I was his.

WE LOVE A VILLAIN WHO IS ACTUALLY A VILLAIN AND STAYS A VILLAIN BUT YOU LOVE 'EM ANYWAYS.

The writing? Phenomenal.
The plot? Thrilling.
The characters? Absolute. fucking. perfection.

Roan and Sasha are everything. I love the way their story starts and every single one of their interactions after the fact. Call me crazy (in fact, I encourage it) but I found it so endearing how Sasha's immediate response to any and all problems was murder. Adorbz.

Once again, I hardly have anything to say - as Jane Austen put it, "If I loved you less, I might be able to talk about it more."

Also, who the fuck has time to write a review when the second book is violently calling my name...

another book, another three (and something) star rating 😮‍💨

and listen, i didn't hate the kidnapping of roan sinclair, but … i was kinda confused by it (tonally and characterization wise).

tkors had me feeling low level whiplash for almost its entire run. that being said, i sure did enjoy the ride 😌

❝you know those will give you cancer, right?❞ he asked, rolling onto his side and propping his head up.
❝i’ll be dead before i get cancer.❞

plot.

☀ roan sinclair … kidnapped.
☀ aleksandr (sasha) vassiliev … kidnapper.
☀ enemies-to-lovers: stockholm-syndrome-lite° edition.

cw.

❛tall, dark, and murdery were not admirable traits. he wasn’t even nice. nice to look at, but not a nice person.❜

roan sinclair.

i'm not gonna lie, i had a bit of trouble connecting to roan. he wasn't dumb per se, but … i wouldn't say he was the smartest hero i've ever read about 🤷‍♀️

pros.

𖤐 he ran away (the second time around).
𖤐 he knew when to shut up (most of the time).
𖤐 he fucked sasha (i mean … this one is self explanatory).
𖤐 he let sasha loose with zero qualms (the emergence of a bloodthirsty prince).
𖤐 roan's observations were funny.
𖤐 i was able to empathize with him … (to an extent).

cons.

✘ the body betraying syndrome was s-t-r-o-n-g.

oh my fucking god roan, time and a place. i- 😩😮‍💨 like look. i get it. if sasha kidnapped me and was giving me bedroom eyes in between smashing my face into various objects, i'd be horned up too. but, like, BRO BRO. there were many times where i wanted to whisper, roan, my mans, cool it- the scary russian is being scary.

✘ roan as a character confused me.

in the immortal words of, mariam:

❛you're brave, that's for sure.
but that's just me saying another word for being FUCKING STUPID.

i don't get that man seriously. i really don't get him, his intentions and his feelings. i just- I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND HIM.❜

sasha vassiliev.

i mean … i left this book feeling three key things about sasha (the wolf) vassiliev.

𖤐 one. sasha can fucking get it.
𖤐 two. sasha can really fucking get it.
𖤐 three. i don't blame roan for climbing this man like a tree.

what i'm trying to say is … sasha was thee standout character of, the kidnapping of roan sinclair. don't let the title fool you, this book should have been called, roan sinclair infiltrates sasha vassiliev's emotions.

❝once you get to know him, he’s—❞
❝what? a completely different person? a big old teddy bear?❞ frankie snorted.
❝no, he’s still an asshole,❞ i snapped, but a smile pulled at the corner of my mouth. ❝but he’s my asshole. he’s actually funny. he cares, in his intense, overprotective way. and he understands people a lot more than i originally gave him credit for, even if he thinks feelings are all bullshit.❞

tldr.

as stated above, the kidnapping of roan sinclair was undeniably sasha motherfucking vassiliev's book. he's the character who had the most growth. now, am i not sure why that growth happened, kinda. but ask me, do i flipping care? ✨no i do not✨ sasha went on a journey of self-discovery. he discovered his sexuality, he found himself a husband, he realized he has emotions, and most importantly, he found himself a new employer (he still has to make that coin, you know).

❛the wolf was off the leash and those motherfuckers had no idea what hell was coming for them.❜

romance.

the romance was solid, and there were a ton of highlighter worthy moments, butt 🍑 the romance is a big reason as to why i rated tkors three (and something) stars.

𖤐 for example, the below quote:

❝are you ok?❞
he nodded, trying to push me away. ❝they’re looking at you.❞
❝i don’t fucking care.❞ i caught his face between my hands and kissed him, right there in front of misha and the others.

a. it is super sweet and had me swooning, ngl.
b. had me confused as fuck.

b.1. what i mean by that is … did i miss the moment their relationship got strong enough that sasha would come out for roan? like … wHeN dId ThIs hAppEN?

⇢ there were many moments towards the end of tkors where i simultaneously swooned and had confused face.
⇢ like … were the romantic moments on fucking point? yes.
⇢was i confused as to where they came from? also yes.

that said, both moonlight and i agree, the below moment will forever live in our heads rent fucking free.

❝i kneel for no one,❞ i repeated, gazing up at roan, ❝except the one i love.❞

i- ✋🥺😭

because i'm lazy … let's wrap this shit up ♥

there is a lot to love about the kidnapping of roan sinclair. sasha, sasha, and i mean … sasha's revenge spree (that was a fun time).

❝i told you, you’re mine, solnyshko. i’m never letting you go.❞
❝are you kidnapping me again?❞ he asked with a wry grin.
❝if i have to.❞

things that fell a bit flat:

☀ roan (see above explanation).
☀ frankie (i could not with her).
☀ the mafia-shit (i usually can't with mafia shit).
☀ the out of nowhere feeling of the romance (which … i mean … ha. i still loved it, though).
☀ the ending (while it was a fun bloody rampage it def came out of left fucking field).

overall, the kidnapping of roan sinclair was a solid start to what i think is gonna be a great duet.

❝you should have fucking known better than to cross me, yuri.❞ … ❝and you should have known better than to fuck with what’s mine.❞

Oh wow, this was amazing.

Trigger Warning for what the author gives in the blurb and the beginning of the book. A more detailed account of what happens that is triggering under the spoiler tag:

If I forgot anything for the trigger warnings, I apologize. But I did put in the big ones that I could remember off the top of my head. Just know that this is DARK, and it doesn't hold back. The human trafficking was particularly hard to take, as well as what happens to Roan. They were both absolutely heartbreaking.

Except for Roan, these men are NOT good men in the slightest. Sasha himself is pretty nasty. But also...because he's our MC, and he falls for Roan, we get to see a more human side to him with Roan. And we learn that he's been through his own set of horrors, so much so that he's hardened himself to the world around him. So much so that he feels that he's only allowed to feel anger, otherwise he should only feel indifferent.

Certainly, growing up in a town in Siberia, and what we're led to think was him being sold into human trafficking himself (it's never confirmed, but it's alluded to and Roan thinks it out loud with his friends, that he might have been) and he's been beaten to a pulp so much in his life that while he feels pain, he can endure it well. He even physically hurts himself by burning cigarettes into his skin whenever he has "impure" thoughts, as in gay thoughts.

Because of course being gay in the Russian criminal underworld is the worst thing to do and be, more than any murdering, human trafficking, etc that they do.

And with Sasha having killed for the first time when he was 10 years old (in self defense) we get the sense of just how tough of a life Sasha has had.

But Roan, the 22 year old college student they kidnap to try to get Roan's father to give them something they've been ordered to get by their boss, changed everything for Sasha.

Roan is confusing. He is nice and kind. He even says thank you to Sasha and everyone else holding him captive when they bring him water or food. He cares about Katya, one of the girls put in the cage next to him. He stands up to Sasha, and doesn't back down, even when it gets him knocked out by the man. Even though he's terrified, he doesn't let himself be cowed. It intrigues Sasha, even when he tells himself he shouldn't be, that he's sick, that he's diseased, even.

I loved these two together. I felt the chemistry from the beginning. And I am SUCH a sucker for when one is a bad ass, gun wielding guy who will fuck up everyone without blinking, but around ONE person, they melt. Well, Sasha isn't one to melt, per se. But he lets his guard down with Roan in a way he doesn't with anyone else. And when Sasha is all in with Roan, he's all in. And when you fuck with what is *his* then he'll fuck you up.

I'm a sucker for that dynamic. Like fuck yes, gimme more of that shit. After what happens to Roan, we see Sasha at his most vulnerable with Roan, at his softest in the whole book. But then we also see him go apeshit on those who hurt him. It didn't matter who he might piss off, he was going to kill every single one of them who hurt what was his. And boy does he.

Sasha has been through so much in his life that he's a hardened shell on the outside, barely let himself feel anything. But Roan slips through the cracks. And with someone like Sasha, once you break through his walls, you are *in* there. Nothing and no one will tear Roan away from if he has anything to say about it.

I swooned near the end scene when Sasha gets all protective of Roan and puts himself in front of him, and when he only kneels for Roan, the man he loves. Inject that shit into my veins, please!

I couldn't put this down, finishing it less than 12 hours. The pages flew by for me, and I was immersed from page one. I couldn't get enough of this, and now I can't wait for the second book, which promises to be very good. And hopefully getting some Roan and Sasha power couple moments ;)

Also yes, I'd love to get Misha's book(s). He is calm, cool and unflappable, and he basically tells Sasha that he's gay too. I'd love to know who he could fall for.

I can't believe I have to wait a month for the second installment. At least this does end without a cliffhanger, per se, and Roan and Sasha are in as good a place as they can be (after what happens to Roan, he definitely needs time to heal, more mentally than physically), and the little teaser at the end has me salivating for more.

Man, I wish this author had more MM romance written 😩

A triumph of a book for me, so I HIGHLY recommend. So so good. Two MASSIVE thumbs up from me! I'll eagerly awaiting the second installment of this duet!😍

I've finally read this duet and what can I say, I've tried reading #Tennebrose series from this author and I didn't like it, but I gave it a shot again with this book, that's been on my tbr for a long time.

For me, this was a great book - and the second part is even better. I'm rating this book with 4.25⭐ and Vengeance with 4.5⭐, so overall, this is a 4.4 - 4.5⭐ duet.

It's a dark romance with a little angst, quite a few trigger warnings and a beautiful love story.

🟢 Mafia romance
🟣 Age gap - 13 years
🟡 No size difference, but Roan is lean, while Sasha is a a bit taller and more buff
🔵 American - Russian
🟠 No Stockholm syndrome (it's a hoax anyway - yes it is, look it up)
🌶️ Great spice; t/b
🔴 Great side characters, all of them
❗ TW - kidnapping, SA!, murder, torture

So, to start it off, this was my Roan.

...and this was my Sasha. Yeah, he has absolutely more tattoos, but this was close to what was in my mind.

Roan is a 22 - year old kid from an upper class, wealthy family. He's an only child, but he's often left to his own devices, his parents aren't interested in him and his life, so noone knows he's gay, he loves and studies music and has a terrible father, who's the owner of a bank and couldn't care less if Roan is dead or alive.

In a series of events, Roan gets on the Russian mob's radar, because his father's bank's safe has something these guys want. They try to rob the bank, but don't succeed, so they take their time and follow Roan for a month, after which they kidnap him for ransom.

Sasha is a 35 - year old mobster from Russia, who's been sent to USA as a kid to work in the Mafia, so he's been in this life since he was a kid, he's hardened, tough, doesn't talk much and is not a boss, but he's very high up, so when Roan lands in his hands, he's keeping him alive until the ransom money comes through, but that doesn't happen, because Roan's father would rather see Roan dead than lose his business.

Things start happening within Sasha- things he'd rather keep hidden, like him being a closeted gay, which is strictly forbidden in Russia and punishable by death. When he can't hold it back anymore and gives in, he gets intimate with Roan while he's kept hostage.

They're both attracted to each other and even though this is a terrible situation where Roan isn't free, he gives into this pull.

Roan does manage to escape and return back home, where noone acknowledges or believes he's been kidnapped. He tries to move on with his life, but really resents his father, so he decides to ultimately give Sasha what he wants. Despite of the situation being what it is, he seeks Sasha out, it's like going straight into the lion's den, where he has no guarantee he'll be able to come out alive, but at this point there's already a thread connecting them.

Thre's no talk of love yet, it's just something they both feel and it starts deepening with Roan and Sasha meeting again.

When they work together to get what Sasha's boss wants, Roan lives with him, in order to be protected this time around. They have amazing sex, a lot of kissing, they just fit and I loved everything about it. They were great together.

After living together in Sasha's apartment, they got really close, the relationship is in the developing stage, so there's no talk of love or anything like that, they just feel attracted to each other and despite the impossible situation they're in, they want to stay together .

🔴 At that particular time, Roan gets brutally raped by a few members from Sasha's group.

It's quite terrible and when I read the author said the reviewers have been writing Roan should've died or he deserved what happened to him - at this point I'm just wondering - is this the community I'm in? Readers talking about a guy being raped deserved it?
I should just close my Kindle now and be done with it, because if that's what you think about a man being raped, what do you then think about a woman being raped? Of anyone being raped??

Men get assaulted all the fucking time , if you didn't know this, do your homework. It starts with kids, continues with teens looking for sex, with going on hookups where the guy is stronger and they can't get away, so they just wait it out and leave, avoiding the guy in the future; there's domestic violence and don't think men aren't victims here too, I mean, the informations are right there, you just have to look harder.

As far as Roan goes, what happened was brutal and he ended up in the hospital, having surgery for his rectum, having psychological damage and being in a complete shock, so he's not the same, noone can get to him, he doesn't talk, the only one he reacts to is Sasha .

The second part of the book starts with them living together right after the resolve in this book, with Sasha going to work for Misha and everyone in this mafia group finding out Sasha is actually gay and wants to be with Roan.

I highly recommed this duet, the second book is, in my opinion, much better than this one, but this one is a very good foundation.

DNF at 73%

This could have been so good but what it turned out to be was a caricature of a captive/captor book. This was in no way the dark read I expected. A Russian who is supposed to have no conscience like Sasha does things that do not fit the character. Roan acts like no one ever would who is put in his situation. He makes the dumbest decisions ever. I couldn’t stand the friend/ex-girlfriend Frankie, I’m so sick of these female characters that are nothing but whiny. No rating but a big disappointment for me.

Somewhat entertaining but really far-fetched. I liked parts of it, but can also see why it has such mixed reviews. It’s OTT, the Russian mob stereotypes are pretty bad and the insta-lust is laughable. I almost DNFed it when the middle part dragged.

Roan was the first good thing in my life and I wasn’t going to give him up. As much as it pained me, I broke away from his mouth to give my lungs the oxygen they needed.
Resting my forehead against his, I closed my eyes, keeping my hands on either side of his face. “I’m not going anywhere, Solnyshko.”

I liked this a lot more than I thought I would! There were many things that I didn’t like, but mostly I loved it. Roan was a part of the reasons for not liking as much as I thought. Like dude got kidnapped, but thought about how hot his kidnapper was?

If he wasn’t a fucking kidnapper, I would have said he was hot. Lie. He was hot, even if he was a kidnapper. But he lost major points for being a criminal.

Like what the fuck dude??? You just got kidnapped and that’s what you think 🥴 He was just horny the entire time. It was kinda annoying. Another thing that was annoying was him saying thank you. In what world would he saying thank you to your KIDNAPPERS. Like have some self respect. He got better though near the end, thank god.

“You’re mine, Solnyshko,” Sasha said, tearing his mouth from mine and fixing me with one of his piercing looks, the kind that saw straight to my soul. “Yes?”
I blinked and nodded, despite the fact I was still trying to work out what, exactly, he was saying.
“From now on, you are mine,” he repeated in a growl. The words reverberated from his chest into mine, solidifying that they were real and not just my imagination. “No one else’s. Do you understand?”
“I’m yours,” I agreed in a stunned whisper.

Now Sasha. He was such a dick sometimes, I truthfully wanted to punch him most of the book. He was such an ass to Roan, like what did he see in Sasha. But he was so sweet sometimes without trying.

His gaze moved over me at a languid pace, so intense I was sure he was actually touching me.
“What are you looking at?” I asked quietly, brows furrowed. It was the hotel room all over again, except he was the one who appeared mesmerized. Why, I had no idea. He was a work of art — I was a blank, boring canvas.
My question propelled him forward, his warm hands spreading up along both sides of my ribcage. “You.” Pressing his lips to mine, he guided me backward until I hit the bed.

Like I melted when I read. Also his nickname??? Solnyshko, little sun. God I died. He was also so funny sometimes? His morals and thinking is all of the place.

Seeing Mrs. Melnyk’s life flash before my eyes, I spit out a hasty goodbye and shoved Sasha back across the hall, while he continued to shout at her.
“Oh my God,” I exclaimed, pushing him through the door to his apartment. “She’s, like, ninety years old! Leave her alone.”
“You don’t know what she said.”
“Sticks and stones, man.”
“You’re saying I should stone her to death or beat her with a stick?” “What? No! That is not what I’m saying! Jesus! It’s an expression.” I raked a hand through my hair and walked a couple steps away before spinning around again. “Why does everything with you end in killing people? No, don’t answer.”

I love these little moments/scenes, they don’t do anything to plot, but are so fun to read. Anyway I’m definitely gonna read the second book. Also I want a book on Misha‼️

Against all odds, I loved this kid. I loved his smart mouth, his reckless bravery, and the way he made me fucking ache to touch him, to just be near him. It was crazy, but for once I saw something in my future beyond pain and death — life. Because of him. For me, Roan was the sun, the center of my universe, the thing that gave me life. Without it, without him, I’d surely wither away and die. “I told you, you’re mine, Solnyshko. I’m never letting you go.”
“Are you kidnapping me again?” he asked with a wry grin.
“If I have to.” I smiled and pressed my lips to his, pouring every bit of love and affection I had for him into that kiss, so he’d know the truth and never question it. I pledged myself to him in that room — from that moment on, only death would take me from him.
As long as I drew breath, he was mine, and I was his.

So, it was my first time reading a captive-captor romance. Going into the book, I knew it would be dark and bloody and disturbing. But now?? Calling it only 'dark' would be a huge understatement. This book was a borderline torture to read. Too intense, too painful. Everything hurts now. And it doesn't hurt so good; it hurts really really bad.....Why do I love to push my limits so much???

Whatever, 3 stars for all the tears you made me shed. Though I loved some parts, the book wasn't just 'it'. Still may change the rating to a higher one later...

ETA: Changed to 1 star as this is not an author worth supporting, which is fitting as the book wasn't good anyway. Do not write LGBTQ romances if you're going to be a POS.

3 Stars

I am clearly in the minority with this one 😬

After seeing all of the raving reviews, I immediately picked this one up. I thought it had a great start (I've been craving a dark book lately too) but then things just went...wrong.

This had the classic "betraying body syndrome" but not in a fun, even slightly realistic way. The story just took a sudden left turn and Roan was practically salivating at the sight of Sasha, even as Sasha hit him, handcuffed him to a bed, and chained him up in a basement. Stockholm syndrome? Maybe. However, this book took it to a ridiculous level.

In addition to my issues with that, the relationship pacing here was just wild. I felt like I had whiplash with how fast their relationship developed and I felt zero emotion during the ILYs. I was even annoyed during the steam 😆

On top of all that, the plot itself left a lot to be desired. You're not going to find much reality in this story, as it felt like a dark soap opera with criminals. There was also a lot of homophobia (internalized and external), as Sasha was raised to believe that being gay is a disease punishable by death. This results in him continually pushing Roan away.

Also, Roan's friend Frankie was the most ANNOYING person ever. Who would act like that around a scary, Russian mobster who kidnapped your friend?? I think she annoyed and took me out of the story more than anything.

That being said, there are some very dark moments in this book (TW for torture, death, and rape), so keep that in mind.

I will probably still read the next book but I wish I loved this like everyone else did 😏😫

I actually don’t want to talk too much about this book because it was phenomenal!!!
It was absolutely well written and an emotional rollercoaster.
Roan and Sasha god these two guys really had me in chokehold til the very end, was the relationship unhealthy? Probably yes. Did I care? Apparently not lol 🤭
I loved everything about them it’s really rare that I really care about the MCs and hype them up , but I was all there for them!
Also shout out to Sasha’s Ukrainian neighbor lady Pahaha she was so great😂

I loved it!!! Best kidnapping book I've ever read. Kinda long though.

I really liked the fact that neither of their personalities changed throughout the story. Most times when the thin line between good and bad is addressed the protagonist ends up "turning" good by the end. At least to some degree. Here it was not so. Sasha was still the bastard till the end and Roan was still the stubborn brat Sasha loved.

Warning though. There's a rape scene. Not very graphic but it was described. Not just saying "I was raped" after the fact and in the hospital. I cried. I mean who wouldn't. But I did cry more when Roan just breaks down in Sasha's arms later. That was my most favorite part.

And the twins ohmygod. I was about to slap Frankie myself. She just couldn't take a hint. I loved how Freddie put her in her place. Totally badass.
