Second chance romance for the purpose of revenge.

This book ends in a cliffhanger and at the time of publication I can't see how many books are to be in the series, duet? Trilogy?

The chapters change from present to past. They are marked.
I wasn't keen on this, it didn't really tell us much and the breakup circumstances have not yet been revealed.

Dual POV.

It's a rich girl and poor boy story.

The whole plot has not been revealed.
They both seem to have a different version of their breakup and it's a case of if they talked about what they both think happened then a lot of the heartache could be saved.
Even his friends tell him to talk to her and that his course of revenge is not wise.
I found it a bit annoying he is so stubborn, that said so is she.

No intimate scenes other than the Hero and heroine.

Neither Hero or heroine are particularly likeable in the past, it's a case of putting on a facade for others to see.

There are secondary characters introduced that have the potential to have their own stories in the future, esp as the Hero was at school and shared a dorm with some of them.

It's slow burn, almost too slow.

It's not discussed if during the five year separation they have been with others.
It's mentioned in a discussion between the heroine and her friend that she hasn't had a serious relationship since the breakup but that doesn't mean there weren't others.
The cliffhanger leaves a mystery about the Hero relationship past.

Cliffhanger. Next book out September but I dislike not knowing if that's the end or not.
I may change my star rating depending on how the story develops in book 2, it's hard o rate when you only to really have a small part of the story.

Der Auftaktband und mein allererstes Buch der Autorin hat mir wahnsinnig gut gefallen! Es ist kein Buch was man mal schnell weglesen kann, es ist teilweise kompliziert und so durchdacht dass man ständig versucht Verbindungen zu knüpfen. Ich liebe die Thematik mit der High Society, den Intrigen und der Liebesgeschichte, die allerdings noch die weiteren Bände braucht um mich vollkommen zu überzeugen. Sterling und Adair kommen aus unterschiedlichen Welten und die Gegensätze waren mehr als ersichtlich, was alles umso interessanter machte. Ich freue mich wahnsinnig auf den zweiten Band und wie die Geschichte weitergeht...😍

This one hurts. I never enjoy it when I have to stop reading a book…I don’t know anyone who does! I was really excited about Blacklist - the cover and blurb were amazing and I was so ready to jump into The Rivals world…but there were just too many things that weren’t working for me and I had to make a hard call. I am seriously, seriously upset about this one not working out. It pains me and I struggled with the decision a lot…I never take DNF’ing a book lightly and I really didn’t want to make it with this one.

The main thing that didn’t work for me was the lack of emotion. I will say that the writing in Blacklist is amazing – that’s a huge reason why it was so hard for me to finally make the call to DNF because based on writing alone…I wanted to keep reading. The story and characters were intriguing and I did want to see how everything played out…but it wasn’t enough. I’m an emotional reader – if I don’t feel that connection to a character…then I have nothing to go on, nothing to keep me motivated or tying me to what’s going on in the book. As great as the writing was, I felt nothing about what was happening with Sterling and Adair – and that’s sad because in the chapters that I read there was plenty of emotional stuff to feed off of.

As much as I was intrigued and wanted to know more about the story, I did feel the pacing was a little slow. I get wanting to keep the element of secrecy and mystery, but I needed more. I also needed more from the characters…both in the present and 5 years ago they just seemed very flat. And there was a lot of emphasis placed on money and while I get it…that’s kind of a key element with what was going on, there were just too much name dropping and it fell flat for me. I got the aim but after a while, it got old. I guess if the emotional impact had been more then I might have been able to overlook that.

I know I’ve already said it but I’ll keep on saying it….I hate that Blacklist didn’t work for me. Like I said, this is nothing against Geneva or her writing…she’s a fantastic writer and that’s why I wish I could have connected more to the book. It’s 100% my problem because I know others have enjoyed it and I’m supremely jealous of them. You win some, you lose some but damn I hate it when it happens.

I liked this book. Adair and Sterling should’ve been together regardless of class. Unfortunately, according to the wealthy, the poor doesn’t have a place in their world. I wasn’t into some parts. I think it was more Adair’s bitchiness that pushed me away. This author has a ton of great quotes and lines.

Sterling will Rache an den reichen Menschen aus seiner Vergangenheit nehmen und ganz besonders an seiner Ex-Freundin Adair.

Was ich mochte?
Ich mag den Schreibstil der Autorin und auch ein paar Gedankengänge des Buches habe ich mir markieren können. Die Atmosphäre und das Setting haben mir gefallen. Sterling mochte ich zwar, allerdings habe ich seine Motivation noch nicht wirklich verstanden, aber vielleicht soll ich ihn auch erst in den kommenden Bücher verstehen.

Was ich jedoch nicht mochte?
Es ist nun einmal so, dass ich Zeitsprünge hasse, denn sie holen mich immer wieder aus dem Lesefluss. Hier sind immer mal wieder Rückblenden eingebaut und das hat mir viel vom Lesevergnügen genommen. Kaum hatte ich mich auf den Gegenwart oder die Vergangenheit wirklich eingelassen, wurde auch schon wieder gewechselt. Das ist allerdings eine persönliche Abneigung und fällt in dieser Bewertung nicht wirklich ins Gewicht.
Womit ich aber tatsächlich meine Probleme hatte war die Motivation der Charaktere zu verstehen und da ganz besonders Adair, die grundlos überzogen zickig auf mich wirkte. Sie hatte ihre guten Seiten und dann wurde sie wieder stachlig wie ein Kaktus, ohne das ich es nachvollziehen konnte.

Für wen ist das Buch etwas?
Ich musste, obwohl ich es nie gesehen habe, an Serien wie 'Denver' oder 'Dallas' denken. Für mich kommt derselbe Vibe rüber. Ich dachte auch immer mal wieder an die 'Bourbon Kings' von J. R. Ward während des Lesens, vermutlich wegen dem Reichtum.
Wem die Welt der Reichen gefällt, in die Rachegedanken geträufelt werden, ist hier sicher richtig.

Fazit: Ich habe es nicht ungern gelesen, aber durch die Rückblenden ist es nicht die richtige Buchreihe für mich. Außerdem hatte ich wirklich ein Problem bestimmtes Verhalten nachzuvollziehen. Ich werde also nicht zum zweiten und dritten Band greifen.

*3,5 ⭐️ Nachdem ich die ersten drei Bände der Royals Reihe von Geneva Lee gelesen habe, war ich total gespannt auf ihre neue Reihe! Der Klappentext hat viel versprochen, allerdings ist spoilert er über das erste Buch hinaus 🤯 Hier also eine ungefährliche Beschreibung, worum es geht und meine Meinung zum Buch:

>> Adair und Sterling lernen sich am ersten Tag in der Uni kennen, wobei zwei völlig verschiedene Welten aufeinander prallen: Er ist arm, ohne Eltern und mit einer problematischen Kindheit groß geworden. Ihre Familie ist dagegen unglaublich reich, einflussreich und ihr stehen alle Türen offen. Natürlich hassen sich beide von Beginn an, aber irgendwann blicken sie auch hinter ihre Fassaden und verlieben sich. Einige Jahre später treffen sie sich auf der Beerdigung von Adairs Vater wieder und Sterling hat nur noch ein Ziel: Adair und alles was sie liebt zu zerstören. <<

Klingt vielversprechend? War es auch. Ich liebe Enemies to Lovers und genau das habe ich hier bekommen. Die Geschichte wird in zwei Zeitachsen erzählt: Wir erleben die Liebesgeschichte in der Vergangenheit und das Chaos der Gegenwart. Beide wollen nicht so richtig mit der Sprache raus rücken, was damals vorgefallen ist und warum sie so einen Hass füreinander empfinden, wodurch es immer spannend bleibt. Ich konnte die Anspannung zwischen den beiden fühlen und auch die Gefühle füreinander, die sie nicht abstellen können. Durch den lockeren und flüssigen Schreibstil bin ich zunehmend durch die Geschichte geflogen, aber mir fehlte es an einem klaren roten Faden. Dadurch, dass man die meiste Zeit im Dunkeln gelassen wird, was die Motivation der Charaktere angeht, wusste ich oft nicht, was denn nun eigentlich Sterlings Ziel ist und worauf das Ganze hinauslaufen soll. Das war schade, aber ich wurde dennoch gut unterhalten und bin sehr zuversichtlich, dass mir Band 2 besser gefallen wird, nachdem nun die ersten Geheimnisse gelüftet wurden!

Blacklist is unbearably tedious. It's thirty four chapters of prologue.

Very little happens. We're introduced to a dozen or two rich and largely morally bankrupt people and a few criminals. Now I think of it, even the criminals are rich and the rich, criminal so I suppose both apply in either case. The characters are two dimensional - idealised or evil.

The only middle ground is occupied by our protagonists and I use that term loosely. The heroine likes dogs and her niece. There are no other redeeming qualities. I felt annoyed every time she spoke. And the hero? I'm annoyed at the pigeonholing of a poor foster child into adult criminal. He's apparently intelligent and believes in consent. Oh and he's a bit of a vigilante. Interesting qualities though these are, they are not enough to create rounded characters. I felt no connection to either. So little connection, in fact that although there was a (non graphic) torture scene, three characters with a hit list, two characters died and one was implicated in date rape, I still feel completely justified in saying that nothing happened. Or, rather, that nothing happened that I cared about.

Geneva Lee est de retour avec une nouvelle série et The Rivals n'a pas fini de nous tenir en haleine. Les personnages vont nous offrir des allers retours entre le passé et le présent et nous allons chercher à comprendre en quoi ces cinq années ont tout changé . L'heure de la vengeance a sonné et peu importe les souffrances infligées , elle aura bien lieu.

j'ai adoré ce premier tome de cette saga qui s'annonce d'ores et déjà épique. Geneva Lee a le don pour nous présenter des personnages hauts en couleurs , qui seront caustiques mais pas antipathiques. Ils nous donnent envie d'en savoir plus et l'intrigue saura nous happer du début à la fin. Vivement le mois de septembre pour connaître la suite des événements car nous ne sommes pas au bout de nos surprises.

Blacklist is the first book in Geneva Lee’s The Rivals series, and it’s an incredibly addictive read. Once I started this one, I could not put it down. There was plenty packed into the pages to keep me entertained throughout, and I have enough lingering questions to be eager for the next book.

As a big fan of revenge plots, this one had me hooked throughout. There is plenty of mystery surrounding the details of the story, which had me creating all kinds of theories. With scenes from both the past and the present, I was falling deeper and deeper, with my eagerness for the information growing throughout. This one does end on a cliff-hanger with plenty of questions unanswered, but the information that is given to this point ensures readers will gladly jump into the second book.

Without a doubt, this was an addictive read that has me desperate for more of the series.

This Book..... It had me at "I'm the devil, come to collect!" How angry and revengeful these characters were! Sterling is back to ruin everyone that's ever wronged him while he was still the poor kid amongst the trust fund silver spoon fed jerks. Especially Adair, the lucky princess he fell in love with freshmen year of college. This book is full of angst, their chemistry is high with all the back and forth mean banter. But even though Sterling came back to ruin Adair and her family's fortune he couldn't help but still feel the love that's hidden deep down for her. There is a major cliff hanger at the end of Blacklist that had me antsy, I cant wait to read the second book! This book was giving to me as an ARC in exchange for an honest review. All thought are my own.

I'm a big fan of Lee's. I really enjoyed the start of this new series.

Sterling and Adair had a more emotional and intellectual connection/friendship than anything. Different side of the tracks sort of thing. Rich girl, poor boy. Major enemies to lovers vibe. But they connected with books, which I loved.

There was also a lot of mystery and intrigue surrounding his coming into wealth, what he did, and what the list was actually about. A story full of secrets.

The last thing I want to say is somewhat of a spoiler so stop reading if you'd rather wait...stop scrolling.

Das Buch war sehr Gut. Ich mochte den Protagonisten Sterling sehr und ich fand es richtig süß was für eine Bindung er zu seinen zwei besten Freunden hatte die ich auch total mochte. Die Protagonistin Adair mochte ich auch richtig doll am Anfang aber als man dann Rückblicke aus deren jugend sah hatte ich meine Zweifel an ihr, sie war aber trotzdem nice-das Buch bestand zu 60% aus Rückblicken von damals- ich mochte die Länge der Kapitel da sie weder zu lang noch zu kurz waren (ca. 8-15 Seiten).
Das Ende hat mich aber sehr geschockt, hatte einen Nervenzusammenbruch und ein Wutanfall.

I was hoping for a spark of passion.. but oh man was this boring. A lot of the time I felt like screaming can you just answer the question? (the dialogue was just weird, the H never answered questions fully, he just kept everything closed, while that could be used in books (WISELY), this book didn't have it, it left me feeling confused and bored. The conversations in the book did not flow at all! The side characters were boring too... The h and H were both assholes that lacked chemistry :/ DNF @50%

Nach 5 Jahren kehrt Sterling wieder zurück nach Nashville zur Beerdigung von Adairs Vater. Sein Ziel ist Rache an Adairs Familie, nach allem was damals vorgefallen ist.
Adair kann jedoch nicht abstreiten, dass sie sich immer noch zu Sterling hingezogen fühlt.

Das Cover gefällt mir persönlich sehr gut und hat mich auch dazu verleitet, den Klappentext zu lesen.
Der Schreibstil ist gut zu lesen, aber er wirkt manchmal sehr kryptisch.
Die Autorin springt oft zwischen Gegenwart und Vergangenheit hin und her. Daher muss man als Leser sich oft konzentrieren, damit man der Geschichte folgen kann.
Durch die Zeitsprünge bekommt der Leser viele Informationen, warum Sterling, Adair und ihre Beziehung zueinander so sind, wie sie sind. Dennoch ist die Geschichte und auch die Intention der Protagonisten oft nicht nachvollziehbar. Auf der einen Seite macht es die Geschichte spannend, auf der anderen ist es auch oft verwirrend und weckt Unzufriedenheit beim Leser.
Die Anziehung zwischen Adair und Sterling konnte gut vermittelt werden und es hat oft geknistert zwischen den beiden.
Ich habe die ganze Zeit mitgefiebert und gehofft, dass die beiden sich endlich näher kommen. Aber leider muss man schon recht lange warten. Als die Geschichte dann endlich an Fahrt aufgenommen hat, war das Buch leider schon zu Ende mit einem fiesem Cliffhanger. Daher würde ich den ersten Band eher als Einleitung der Hauptgeschichte sehen.
Ich bin tatsächlich etwas hin und her gerissen, da mir der Klappentext und auch die Spannung zwischen den Charaktere sehr gefallen hat. Ich hätte mir dennoch etwas mehr Handlung und Aufklärung gewünscht.

Der Klappentext von „Black Roses“ ist sehr vielversprechend. Leider nimmt die Geschichte erst zum Ende hin so richtig an Fahrt auf, sodass der Leser lange hingehalten wird. Teilweise war mir die Geschichte etwas zu kryptisch, da immer noch viele Fragen offen sind und vermutlich erst in den nächsten Bänden beantwortet werden. Dennoch hat mir die Spannung zwischen Adair und Sterling sehr gut gefallen und ich bin sehr gespannt auf die Fortsetzung.

Adair thought Sterling meant everything to her like a Diamond and Sterling thought Adair was as lost as he was .. but what these two don’t know is that the past and future weather you are still angry or not will collide with each other and I am not sure who will survive ?? They both have had there hearts broken not by lovers but by family and that hurts the worst.

By hiding behind the scars they are both unable to see the truths and tell each other the truths without hurting each other and not meaning too .

She hurts him, he leaves .. he hurts her, she leaves .. can or will they get past it or will they’re strong pull, feeling and true love be able to survive ??

Who would have thought that 5 years later they could still be civil with each other and is it for one day thing and one thing alone .... The MacLaine Fortune ?? Is there a fortune ?? Lies lies lies .... I can’t wait for more !! There story is tragic and magical at the same time !!

This was book 1 in "The Rivals" series. Five years ago a tragedy brought these two together and they fell in love until he left. This book went back and forth between past and present. They haven't see each other in five years. Her father just died and Sterling went to the cemetery only he wants revenge. Five years ago they met in college Sterling is a poor foster kid going to school on scholarship and it's a college full of rich kids. Five years later he's rich he's also been in the marines. His two friends from the marines are also involved. The three of them are bound together. This book was long too long at times. I have read this author before. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. This book did leave off on a cliffhanger.

Ufff, ich weiß wieder, wieso ich Geneva Lee liebe. Der Schreibstil ist der Hammer und ich hatte so krasse Denverclan-Vibes, hab’s geliebt. Sterling ist sooo ein 🔥 Protagonist und auch Adair ist mir im Laufe des Buchs immer sympathischer geworden. Was für ein Cliffhanger, zum Glück kommt Teil 2 schon im März!

I would actually place this a little bit closer to a young adult to medium adult that there is one there's a few areas where it gets a bit steamy but for the most part this is a enemies to lovers situation I gave it a four you might see it as a little bit better or a little bit worse depending on who you are good luck

The Blacklist is the first half of a new duet from the always-interesting Geneva Lee. Our story picks up amidst a funeral- as we meet Adair, the much put upon and existentially lost debutante, and Sterling- her old love who has returned with dubious motives relating to Adair’s family. There is clearly a wealth of history between them- and we find there is much mystery regarding both their past and Adair’s family.

Told in alternating timelines, present and 5 years past, we are left trying to puzzle together the fabric of these characters, a desire to understand what happened to them in the past as we also are trying to uncover what their exact motivations are in the present. I find that parallel timelines are about 50-50 for me in terms of working as a narrative device. Lee smartly keeps most of the “in the past” scenes brief and focused, even if I didn’t find them to be particularly revelatory as it relates to the development of these characters.

We have quite an interesting and complex cast of characters- each with their own baggage and motivations. Unfortunately, I had a hard time connecting to both Adair and Sterling- being in Sterling’s head in the present felt so clinical and cold in places, and Adair just doesn’t have any sense of who she is, so I don’t quite yet understand her. As they interact more, I started to warm up to both of them- recognizing they are both victims of the same man, the same world injustices. Towards the end, I really liked them together, and I saw glimmers of the present Sterling having some of the charm of the past, and we start to see Adair have a backbone. I hope in the second book we get to know them more- the REAL them, so I can perhaps connect or even empathize with them more. I also did find them to seem a bit beyond their years (when I first started the book, I assumed they were in their 30’s based on how they acted). And, for those that have preferences, this is INCREDIBLY slow burn- in fact, there is barely any “burn.”

While Lee’s writing is captivating, I found the first half of this book to be pretty slow. In fact, most of this first book in the duet felt like prolonged exposition- a giant prequel instead of the main event. I kept waiting for the story to pick up- to actually go somewhere and start to progress the main story. When Lee goes there (for me it was about 60/70% of the way through), this felt like a 5 star read- captivating, sensual and dynamic- we start to see more of who these characters may be, but also more importantly who they may be to each other. It just took so long to get there, and then when it really picks up, we’re hit with a very jarring and sudden cliffhanger- that quite honestly, to me, felt like it came in the middle of the first deeply authentic moment in the book for these characters (at least in their "present" story). If the second part of the duet can capture the glimmers of true romantic chemistry and engage me in the way the last 30% did, I'm all in for book 2. While I’m never the kind of reader to wait for a full series to be complete to read, I may have preferred that here- I just think we haven’t gotten to our true story yet, but I think it will be fantastic when we do!

Adair, reiches It – Girl hat eine Beziehung mit Sterling. Adairs Vater setzt sie unter Druck und fordert, dass sie sich entscheidet: Das Familienunternehmen oder ihre Beziehung. Sie entscheidet sich für das Familienunternehmen. Am Tag der Beerdigung ihres Vaters treffen beide wieder aufeinander und die Karten sind vollkommen neu gemischt.





Der Schreibstil von Genevea Lee ist so toll wie in der Royals Saga. Ich habe es sehr genossen dieses Buch zu lesen. Gerade Sterling hat es mir angetan. Er ist loyal, frech und freundlich. Adair war auch sehr liebenswert. Besonders in der “Heute”-Zeit.



Adairs Familie lässt keine Wünsche offen. Sie ist gemein zu ihrer Nichte, arrogant und bestimmt gerne über sie.

Insgesamt ist dieses Buch sehr gelungen. Ich habs sehr genossen, jedoch bekommt es von mir einen Stern abzug, da ich die “Vergangenheitsform” nicht so gelungen fand wie den Rest.

I wasn't sure when I was going to read it, but fate decided it would be sooner than later...
For me this didn't feel like a romance book, more toward the end it did.
Otherwise I would've liked it more I think.
At first I hated Adair because she does act like a rich b*tch... It's just so annoying and from the start..
When we meet Sterling in the past I would never if I were Adair act like that.. He didn't deserve it.

It was very complicated the jump from past to present, I got a whiplash and as soon as it changed I forgot where the other chapter ended and was confused.
So I hope to god the next one isn't past to present to past to present, because otherwise I'm going to be seriously pissed..

I've been trapped in the Royals Saga and World for a long time now, and I have loved every second of it- and I still crave it. BUT now a new saga is born, the Rivals and I must say the title alone of this first book had me hooked.
Blacklist. It's different. It's a whole new world with new characters to love and hate.
I love the way we slowly get to know Adair and Sterling. From their past to their present. I love how Geneva slowly gives us hints to what this story is about.
It's slowly building up,leaving you wanting more and then Geneva ends it. Always the cliffhanger queen.
All in all, a great start to a new series. I can’t wait to read more.

3,5⭐️ für eine zerrissene Meinung über dieses Buch.
Der Einstieg war ein totaler Krampf. Man sieht nur Hass, Hass, Hass und Rachegelüste, bevor man den Menschen dahinter kennenlernt. Ich bin nicht begeistert von Sterlings Soziopathengehabe. Es ist tatsächlich etwas verstörend... Und Adair ist mir viel zu zickig, obwohl Sterling ihr ja eigentlich nichts getan hat. Warum ist sie so, wie sie ist? Also in diesem Band findet man darauf noch keine Antwort. Auch hinter Sterlings wahre Intention steigt man nicht wirklich.
Dazu dann immer wieder dieser Frauenhass, Mysogynie, und und und... Dass Adairs Bruder einfach einwilligt, sie an Sterling zu verschachern??!! Und dann auch noch vor ihr so tut, als wäre das alles tutti und diese kranke Abmachung würde gar nicht existieren!!?!? Immer wieder auch diese toxischen Kommentare, absolut Frauenfeindlich und eklig.
Die ganze Beziehung zwischen Adair und Sterling ist total toxisch, aber es wird irgendwie romantisiert...

Sterling ist mir insofern auch unsympathisch, als dass er sich über die Vorurteile der Reichen gegenüber armen Menschen immer wieder aufregt, allerdings macht er es selbst die ganze Zeit andersherum auch. Er hasst reiche Personen und lässt es richtig raushängen, gibt ihnen keine Chance, sie kennenzulernen und auch Adair misst er immer wieder mit dem Rahmen der Vorurteile.

Die ständigen Zeitsprünge fand ich anstrengend, um dem Verlauf der Geschichte noch zu folgen. Oft habe ich im Kopf die beiden Zeiten vertauscht. Es hat den gesamten Lesefluss gestört.

Positive Punkte sind hier allerdings, dass die Geschichte und die Hintergründe, die immer wieder nur angerissen werden, mich in den Bann gezogen haben. Man erfährt immer nur Häppchen und es wird auch weiterhin größtenteils geheim gehalten, was dahinter steckt. Was sind die beiden für Charaktere? Was sind ihre Motive, was macht sie aus, was bringt sie dazu, so zu handeln? All das bleibt ein großes Fragezeichen.
Das regte mich dazu an, immer weiter mitzudenken, zu rätseln usw.
