My daughter (8), who brought this home from the library, and I, continue to disagree about this series. She loves it.

I think the language and topics are too complicated for the font size--it looks like it's for an early reader, and I imagine it would be disheartening to stumble over the large number of complex words, like masqueraded, manoeuvre, archaeological and synchronized.

I also dislike the inference that telling children how terrible the world is (in this book, how poaching to support the illegal animal trade is wiping out endangered species, in surprisingly graphic detail) will make them feel empowered to change it, rather than helpless in the face of adults. The advice to children is to educate others about the illegal animal trade, to tell their parents not to buy illegal holiday souvenirs, and to sign petitions.

In this story Agnes feels ashamed that

My daughter enjoys this series of stories of a child going on wild adventures with talking animals, but (for the entire series) I have concerns about the age-appropriateness of the real-life content, the depiction of adult/child relationships, and the idea that it's children's responsibility to sort out the mess adults have made.
