Rate this book
For as long as she can remember, Eden has been on the run.
The open road is the only freedom she’s ever known, the only life she’s ever had. But when the road ends in a backwater town, a mysterious phone call sends her on a new journey.

Lazarus is no stranger to ghosts.
Shades and spirits are his constant companions, it’s the living that set him on edge. The decision to help a troubled mage will find him taking on more than he bargained for.

Becoming a hunter was never part of Zeke’s plan.
He finds himself stepping into all the dark places where horrors lurk and spirits roam free—until a job gone wrong shows him there’s more than one way to deal with a monster.

A missing friend.
A chance to prove himself.
A desire to keep the darkness inside at bay.
Together, the three set out on the long road east, each pulled by a secret.
But a powerful presence lurks in the shadows, eager to make a deal that will change their lives forever.

I was one of the early readers of both this book and the sequel so I can say with certainty that you need to pick these up! They are fun stories and easy to fly through. The characters feel like real people! If you like the TV show Supernatural and ship Rey and Kylo from Star Wars you will love these. I can't wait to see what Hannah has planned for the rest of the series!

*sings* “Carry on my wayward son, there’ll be peace when you are done…” Good, now that I have summoned Supernatural fans worldwide, come, sit right here and let me tell you about this fabulous debut novel, “Resurrection Road.” We follow a mage with no memories from beyond 5 years ago, and two cousin hunters doing their thing, when one broken down car brings this trio, and their literal best dog in the world, together to find a missing friend. And, because we’ve got two hunters leading the search and rescue party, there’s many a detour along the way to put down ghosts, releasing them back into the Good Night where they can complete their journey. But not all the spirits and monsters this group encounter are what they seem, while others are exactly what they seem to be. All the while, through the hunting and searching, these three characters grow in incredible ways, from not being trusting of mages—and people in general—to trying to prove their worth not just as a hunter, but person, to deciding not to run from some mysterious past, but toward a grounded future. Honestly, there is a reason why I summoned you SPN fans here, and that’s because this book is for you!

Marae really captures the essence of what made Supernatural one of my favorite shows, she understands that while ghost and monster hunting is important, and it does make up the core of who Lazarus and Zeke are, it’s not the heart of the story. Marae’s ghost and monster hunting scenes are insanely entertaining, don’t get me wrong (plus, I enjoyed the breadth of ghosts and monsters she had, where some were exciting because they were what I expected and wanted, and others completely blew me away with their creativity). The pacing with these little side missions is spaced out perfectly along the path of helping Eden find her friend, and while the characters make these detours, the plot never does. You never lose sight of what the ultimate goal is, of where these characters need to go, and what they have to accomplish, you never once feel lost or confused, or forget what’s happening. But it is the characters that make the book so unique and special.

Each character is so distinct from one another, and each has their own path of self-discovery and growth… They are all so well rounded and deep with their own goals and dreams, which don’t always line up with the other characters goals, making for some wonderful tension. Plus, some have tragic backstories which you can’t help but eat up. The relationships in this book were wonderful too, and who doesn’t like a found family trope? But, you know me, I am a sucker for the slow burn romances, and this book has that in spades!

Marae does a fabulous job weaving her mysteries, too. So, rest assured, while this book is its own complete story, there are so many things teased, hints sprinkled throughout, that are so intriguing! This first book sets such a strong foundation for later books in the series without ending before I felt like things properly started, which has to be applauded in Urban Fantasy series since most seem to love ending on these crazy huge cliffhangers. Which is honestly why I am giving this book 5 stars: the pacing was spot on, the tension delicious, the banter laugh out loud worthy at times, and the story is a complete arc from start to finish. It really has it all for such a quick read!

I do need to mention, on a personal note, that I was an early beta reader for Resurrection Road, however that does not impact this review whatsoever. How/why? Because I base my reviews on the finished novel, not what I’ve read in early iterations. I have since bought my own copy of this book because I truly love the content so much. The genuine progress this story has made since I first looked at it is commendable; this author is going to have such an amazing career. So, get in on this before she blows up so you can be a hipster with me and say “I liked it first.”

**I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review**

I had the privilege of reading an early copy of this book and let me tell you it is SUCH a fun adventure! I absolutely love the characters, the aesthetic, and Marae's prose as she weaves together a supernatural roadtrip story.

It's hard not to fall in love with each of these characters. The MC is a witch with no memories who goes on a trip with a ghosthunting duo (Supernatural brothers anyone?) and their hellhound dog as she tries to find the other half of her heart - her best friend who is stuck in another realm. The trek across the U.S., stopping to answer to a few spirits along the way.

I highly recommend this book for a fun, easy roadtrip with supernatural elements and a wee bit of ~romantic angst~. PLUS I have already read book two and I know this series is just going to get better and better.

I'm so happy that this book is finally being released and I will be shouting my love for it from the rooftops. If you love Supernatural or Wynonna Earp you will love this series. GO BUY THIS BOOK FOREAL!!

if nobody got me i know traditionally published books that used to be fanfiction got me. this has that nostalgic AO3 feel to it, like i just stumbled on the best fic of my life and i'm gonna spend all my night hours reading a gazillion chapters under my comforter.

in Resurrection Road we follow Eden, a sigil mage that is forced to team up with two hunters, cousins Lazarus and Ezekiel "Zeke" Morgan (family names, don't ask), to find her missing friend Mab after a concerning phone call.

i loved this one, it's got some debut novel hiccups and the writing is missing some craft at certain points but oooh did it scratch a particular itch for me. the characters especially are just the best, i came to care so much for all of them. but especially Hades cause he is best boi.

if you want some SPN vibes, only less painfully CW, and a super fun read with great characters, pick this baby up and build a shrine in your closet for Laz like i'm about to do.

If you are a fan of the tv show Supernatural, you should read this book. It has a similar vibe and many subtle nods and similarities to the show, but it also stands entirely on its own.
A wonderful debut by Hannah Marae. I will absolutely be picking up the coming sequels to this story!
I'm one who focuses on character relationships and development, and I can say that I love these characters. All loveable in their own way and I became invested in their stories early on. I can't wait to see where they go in the future because there are still many unanswered questions about what happened in each of their pasts. I have many theories already forming!

I received an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Resurrection Road is a Adult Paranormal/Urban Fantasy book 1 in the Echo Trails series.

Book Cover: 5* - The cover is just wonderfully done and I love the little hidden details around this "mysterious" character on the cover. Ok, I know who it is and you will too once you start reading lol. Anyway, it's a gorgeous cover meant to convey mystery with its little details here and there. Like the fact that this is a road trip journey to save a friend from a mage. I also really love the neon title sign.

Summary/Tagline: 5* - Short, sweet, and to the point. The little details given to me is very much enough to hook me in and want to read the story without revealing to much, and you get a little insight on the characters before reading the story too.

Characters: 4* - This book is a multi PoV story. We follow 3 characters, well, technically 4, but I think one of them is spoilers so I will only talk about 3 of the 4 characters here. We follow Eden, a mage with a hidden, or actually, missing past, Lazarus(Laz) Morgan, a great hunter who doesn't seek ghosts for the thrill of it, but because someone has to do it, especially after losing someone very important to him in a Hunt, and lastly we have Ezekiel(Zeke) Morgan, Laz's cousin and a fellow hunter, he acts like he's a long for the ride, but really he's just looking out for his older cousin, and makes it so that what happened to Laz back then, doesn't happen again. Each of these characters carry their own baggage, but don't let it try and weigh them down, and when they all come together for a cause, they begin to grow into a small little family actually wanting to look out for one another. These 3 characters were just so fun to follow and I enjoyed learning about each of them. Even the supporting and minor characters are great, from Hades a hellhound, Ignatius a coyote shifter, and other amazing characters. Even the antagonists are some interesting characters the gang goes up against, so I definitely look forward to follow these characters onto their next journey.

World Building: 4* - I really like learning about this somewhat secret world of ghosts, vampires, werewolves, and other supernatural beings. I only say somewhat because it doesn't look like the Hunters go out of their way to keep this world hidden, their whole job is to make sure the supernatural world doesn't disrupt the mundane lives of normal people. Unfortunately, you don't learn the nitty gritty of how Hunters get their information, they don't technically have a headquarters, or have a set rule of how things should work if that makes sense. A lot of this is more like, if they happen upon it, they just go deal with it. I also liked getting some Hunter related info throughout the story, like demons even being an issue and how ghosts break through the veils and may turn into a poltergeist if not dealt with in time. Oh man there's also vampires, know that these are pretty different from past vampire iteration as they aren't beholden to the nighttime rules. These guys deal with some pretty scary stuff. Then there are mages, and although we are aware of 2 types, they do allude to others, I just don't know what else is there. Eden and her best friend are sigil mages, so their magic works by drawing symbols either on themselves, objects, and/or surrounding environments. I suppose my only issue is that we don't always know what the sigils look like when they are being drawn or talked about. Another type is a blood mage which are pretty wicked to deal with and are considered the problem type mages, mainly with depending on how they get their blood. I won't say anymore just in case spoilers, just know that I really enjoyed this version of our world and I actually would like to take part and help to keep the peace lol.

Story: 4* - As I stated earlier, we follow 4 characters throughout the story, but we start this book off with Eden. She's on the road alone until her car breaks down, but lucky for her there is a hole in the wall town in the middle of "nowhere". Once she gets her car situation dealt with, she suddenly gets a phone call from a friend she unfortunately grew estranged with, only to hear that she was only calling to say goodbye after making a really bad deal, and then the phone cuts off. Sure that Eden's friend is in trouble because of the glowing sigil over her chest, she takes it upon herself to find her friend and help in anyway she can, regardless of what was said in the past. Good news for Eden, two Hunters kind of fall in her lap, and she "hires" them to help save her friend. The 3 then go on a road trip across the US, fighting ghosts, vampires, and learning about each other along the way. I had such a fun time reading this story.

Over All: 4* - Originally I was a beta for this story, but I came in at the last round. From then to this final version there were some changes made, but overall, I still enjoyed it now as I did then. I give this book 4 stars because it was fun and I enjoyed following these characters and their amazing hellhound Hades. I was also just so drawn to this version of our world that I very much wish was real lol. I know this story was written after the show Supernatural was ending, so if you're a fan of the show, or even just like the show, or know absolutely nothing about it and just like stories of alternate versions of Earth, then give this story a shot! I promise you'll have fun going on this fun wild story with Eden, Laz, and Zeke.

Ever since she can remember, Eden has been living a life on the run, finding solace only in the open road. However, her journey takes a new turn when she reaches a small town and receives a cryptic phone call that sets her on a mysterious path. Meanwhile, Lazarus is accustomed to the company of ghosts and spirits, but living individuals make him uneasy. When he chooses to assist a troubled mage, he doesn't realize that he's in for more than he bargained for. Zeke never intended to be a hunter, but he finds himself in the midst of the darkness, facing monsters and wandering spirits. The three embark on a journey to the East, each harboring a hidden motive. However, a formidable entity awaits them, eager to strike a life-altering deal.

"There is no real world, it's all real. Above. Below. They're just different layers of reality."

This book is one of my newest favorite reads and hyper-fixations. I picked it up on a whim because it was pitched to me as if the Rey x Kylo pairing had a baby with the Supernatural universe and I am so glad that I picked this up. Does it fit those vibes? Yes, 100000% but it is so much more than that. Lovers of paranormal / supernatural creatures and vibes will absolutely adore this book. It takes place mostly on the open road with a lot of action-packed adventures that come together to tell the beginning of an intriguing story that I could not personally put down. I love how easily the story flowed, especially with the fact that there are four points of view throughout this book. It was done in a way where all of their voices and characteristics were extremely recognizable and I loved the fact we got to see each point of view because they all have something different going on with them while also being tied together through the main story arc.

Eden, as a character, is probably my favorite. She feels deeply for the people that she cares about and it’s a trait that I can relate to. You’ll see this a lot throughout the progression of the book but specifically towards the end (without me spoiling anything) that just had me thinking that it was something I would have done in her exact position. I also really loved the way that sigil magic worked and I really hope we get to see more of Eden’s magic and her powers because I, personally, feel like something deeper is there.

Lazarus is so freaking hot and broody and I’m in love with him. His chapters were always some of my favorites because I love how his character thinks through things and moves through life compared to the others in the story because you can just tell - even before you know all of the details - that he has been through it. I cannot wait to see what is in store for him in the next book!

Zeke would have been easy to just write off as the comedic relief but Hannah Marae gave him a story that left me full of love for his character. I love his dynamic with Eden and Lazarus so much and the deep bonds of family / found family with his character specifically. I would 10/10 be friends with him and I loved that he was never portrayed as a weak character which I feel happens with character archetypes like his.

Mab is an interesting one and although she wasn’t on the page a whole lot in this book, I find myself wanting to see more of her story so hopefully we get to experience that in the rest of the series!

This book is magical and I’ll definitely be thinking and talking about it for a long time to come because it’s rooted in my heart and my brain. A magical and wonderful take on a concept that I think is so cool with world-building that is unique and so interesting! I cannot wait to see what’s in store for book two!

- for the supernatural fans
- for the reylos
- paranormal creatures (vampires, ghosties, mages, etc.)
- found family
- multi-pov
- road trips
- slow burn
- pining

3.5 rounded up

You know what’s amazing? That I know people who write books. I think all authors are amazing – writing a book (or fanfiction!) is a great accomplishment. And it blows my mind that I’ve been able to meet up and coming authors through the bookstagram community!! One of those is Hannah Marae, who you can find on Instagram @hannah.marae. When I heard about this book of hers, I was super excited. She offered me an advanced copy, and I’m so glad I took her up on the offer. I really enjoyed the book overall.

Listen, I just really love urban fantasy okay? Ghosts and vampires and shapeshifters and magic!! It’s all great. And I especially like how each author/book has their own take on these classic elements. I really enjoyed the focus on ghosts in this particular novel. Also, the sigil magic concept is really cool. I guess writing symbols for magic has been used before, but I really liked the concept of tattooing these sigils on a person’s body. Being able to activate a tattoo spell is something that my Dungeons and Dragons campaign has used recently haha, so I’m really into it.

Maybe it’s because I’m going on a road trip of my own soon, but I love that setting for novels. I haven’t read many, but I think it’s a great way to explore lots of cool locations, and a great setting for building relationships. Road-tripping along with this cast of characters, and the different “side quests” so to speak, was super fun to read about.

I know that the show Supernatural was a big influence on this novel, but to be honest I haven’t seen any of that show haha. From what I know of it though, one of the key relationships is between two brothers, and we have that in Resurrection Road. Lazarus and Zeke are technically cousins, but live and travel together and interact like many siblings do. They definitely love each other, but naturally there are things about the other that get on their nerves, and they have their fights. Like a real world relationship! Hahaah. I think it would be fun to read a collection of short stories about them and their adventures haha. The two of them are ghost hunters, and learning how ghosts interact with the world around them through the lense of ghost hunting was really cool.

Another family relationship was Mab and Eden – though it is found family rather than blood family. Which we love around here!!! It’s clear that the two of them have a deep bond, but I didn’t feel it quite like I wanted to. I felt that it was explained more than it was shown, so I didn’t feel quite as invested. I think this is meant to be the first book in a series, which is perhaps why the author didn’t include quite as much backstory as I would’ve liked. Hopefully the author explores relationship more in later books!

That kind of leads me to a general complaint of lack of character depth. Naturally we focused in on the two main characters, Eden and Laz. However, there are a good handful of secondary characters that I think needed more exploration and development. The novel could have been longer, to spend more time on this aspect.

I think also the general timeline felt a bit rushed – the characters started trusting each other too quickly to be believable. In general, I think the novel should have been maybe 50+ pages longer so that we could just get more depth in all aspects.

All in all, this was a really fun read! It could use a little more development, but I’m really happy I read it. And I will definitely be looking forward to the next book, and further books by Hannah! I hope you all check this one out – it releases today!! You can find it on Amazon, or get a signed copy from Hannah’s Etsy store.

OH!! And how could I forget my favorite character – a shapeshifting dog named Hades!! Precious boy!

I tore my way through Resurrection Road

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

▪︎▪︎▪︎

The Good Night is a haunting beautiful place I never wish to visit. I made some rules that might help with that.

Rule 1) Don't touch the Spirits.
Rule 2) Hades is a good boy, but he does what he wants, when he wants.
Rule 3) Zeke will consume all the caffeine (and sugar) and require more. Backup snacks are always a good idea.
Rule 4) Lazarus is always suspicious. Of everything.
Rule 5) The safest place to be is Nowhere.
Rule 6) Stay away from blood mages.

Those stories about the old haunted house in your town, they might just be true...

▪︎▪︎▪︎

Resurrection Road follows three very different characters whose paths crossing seemingly by coincidence.
Within pages there's a detailed world of possibilities and literal magic waiting to be read. Along with the good and bad mysteries of the unknown.

This is a changing POV stories, which I'm not usually a fan of, but it worked. The transition are done in the right moments, with little overlap to seamlessly weave everything together without repeating events.

The story being built gave enough information on this magic and spirit filled world to keep up, while leaving more to look out for and discover around the next corner.

The character depth is phenomenal and kept me turning those pages, needing to know everything. Each with their own unique motivation and conflicts to reslove, front and center, propelling everything everyone forward.

The story is just enough to set everything up, find a bit of resolution, but not quite answer all the questions you'll have. I absolutely need more!

On a side note, Lazarus is 100% by book boyfriend type and I WOULD FIGHT FOR HADES WITHOUT QUESTION. *cough*

Perfect read if you are looking for something to scratch that Supernatural itch.

Edited to add: I’ve read this book 5 times now.

There are very few books I know I’m going to love in the first few pages, and even less that I want to re-read immediately after finishing. I can not wait for the ebook release so I can read this again! This will definitely become a comfort read for me.
The first 2/3 of the book is favourite, I loved reading about them hunting ghosts and their time with Ignatius. The dynamic of the trio is great and well balanced, no-one over powers the rest etc.
I've never wished a book had fan-fiction before, I would happily read more of their ghost hunting adventures.
The book assumes that you have either read Urban Fantasy or watched Supernatural before so it does glaze over some of the standard explanations but it's not dealing with subjects that are too out there.

Resurrection Road is an incredibly fun and well-written debut novel that I finished in two sittings (it would've been one if I hadn't had things to do). The world-building is thorough without becoming a tedious aspect of the storytelling and the characters are all well rounded and realistic. Its pacing is fantastic, pulling you right at the beginning and holding your interest until the last sentence. This could easily be one of my new favorites and I cannot wait for the rest of the series!

This is one of those books that was sitting on my TBR and when I finally read it, I was so mad at myself for not starting it sooner. This is a great book! Road trips, magic, mystery, action it was such a great read. It has the early Supernatural vibes in spades, but the addition of a female mage to the two hunters as well as the multiple POVs and the new magic system kept it fresh and made me like it even more. I can't wait to get my hands on the second one!

It was so nice?! I didn't expected to finish it this fast. I loved everything, from the relations, to the road trip, the connections, the mystery.

It was light, fun, dark, sad (I got tears in my poor sensitive heart)
And the little slow burn?! I mean I could die for them 👀

Calling all Supernatural fans! You do not want to miss this fun, unputdownable adventure!

Eden, Lazarus, and Zeke are all such wonderfully rounded, fully developed characters; each drawing you into their differing perspectives so well you think you're right there along for the journey. Eden is a mage who has no memory of any past before 5 years ago and Lazarus and Zeke are monster-hunting cousins and the trio collide when Eden needs the cousins' help tracking down her missing friend. But when on the road with hunters, you know the journey won't be as simple as from point A to point B without a little adventure, erm.. I mean business, along the way.

I love the overall aesthetic of this book, the author captures the vibe and world-building Supernatural fans will love and appreciate while still drawing in readers who might not be as familiar with that show to her truly original story. I loved the scenes where the trio encounter the ghosts and monsters and the way they go about putting them down. You see each character grow so much along the way and I enjoyed watching all of the characters interact so much.

Overall, this book is such a fun, satisfying journey that sets up wonderfully for the upcoming books in the series. Once I started reading I quickly devoured the story, not wanting to put it down. This is one debut author that needs to be on everybody's radar!

This reminded me so much of the first couple of seasons of Supernatural!!

The characters are great, very well rounded.
The relationships in this book were wonderful too. Loved the found family element.
The pacing was also really great, there's never a dull moment! The world was very interesting, I didn't quite felt the Reylo vibes, but maybe on the second book.
