Bob Rundell – Buckskin Chronicles Bk 1-10 – Reviewed 6/21/21 – Read 6/9-15/21

The beginning, a man has to keep a promise no matter what! Jeremiah Thompsett in Buckskin Chronicles

After the Potawatomie Indians killed his mother, his father decided that he could not properly raise Jeremiah’s little sister, so they took her to live with his aunt. After leaving Elizabeth in Michigan territory, twelve-year-old Jeremiah and his dad headed for the west. Again, he was besieged by death when the Shoshone dog soldiers killed his father. Then something amazing happened, he was rescued by a very large black man, by the name of Ezekiel. This man was an escaped slave, with a heart of gold. The unusual thing about him was that he too had found a new family, the Arapahoe Indians had adopted him. Over time he went on to prove himself to be a respected warrior. Never before had someone outside of the tribe held a position on the tribal war council, but Ezekiel had, they called him Buffalo Thunder.

This man raised Jeremiah to adulthood, growing up among the tribe and learning their ways. The tribe gave him the name of White Wolf, and he along with Broken Shield and Laughing Waters was best friends. When not with their adopted family they lived at their cabin where Ezekiel had found a strike of gold. He was saving this gold so that he could go back and rescue his mother, brothers, and sister. He had planned to buy their freedom, Ezekiel believed that Jeremiah was a gift from heaven, sent to him to accomplish this goal. It was a promise between the men. Now with Buffalo Thunder murdered, the gold stolen, Jeremiah had to find the killers and retrieve the gold so that he could keep his promise to his adopted father, to buy Ezekiel’s other family their freedom.

Join, Jeremiah, Broken Shield, and Laughing Waters as they track the killers on their quest for vengeance for the death of Ezekiel and how he keeps his promise. Then read on to the rest of the family’s adventures…

Buckskin Chronicles: The Complete Series includes – To Keep a Promise, To the Tall Timber, To the Absaroka, To the Bighorns, To the Medicine Bow, To the Sierra Madre, To the Cache La Poudre, To the Overland Trail, To the Sangre De Cristo and To the San Juan.

What did I like? I think the best thing I like about this series, other than it is fantastic, is the relationships with the Native Americans. They played such an important part in our history and Bob has taken that a step further in showing us how they could have had a part in that, and certainly did in so many cases. The series starts with the life of Jeremiah and goes on to his, and his extended family's children, then down to the grandchildren. He shows us the history of believing what our faith can do to guide our future, all done with a gentle touch. It also reiterates that it is not the color or the nationality of a person that made our country great, plus that there are good and bad in all people.

What will you like? Well, dang, this starts with a bang in book one (To Keep a Promise), then finishes with an explosion in book ten. What more could you ask for? After book one, each book takes us on another adventure with one of the descendants from Jeremiah and continuing with the history of the previous as each generation reaches out on their own, threading in interesting parts of our actual history. Bob’s research shows on every page, from the historical past, the clothes, the weapons, the places, and right down to the animals. You can experience the past as he weaves his magic on the storyline and brings it alive with his words. In reading this I enjoyed every page and was hard-pressed to lay this book down, but when you are reading ten all at once, you do have to sleep once in a while. Enjoy this collection from one of our favorite authors, BN Rundell in the “Buckskin Chronicles,” available July 7, 2021. Another excellent western read!

Family and Faith

This book series tells the story of a mountain man and his family through generations. Well written books that goes into detail about the physical appearance and thoughts of the characters in the books along with the detail about the landscape makes it easy to imagine for the reader's. I like how real historical figures from the old west were written into the stories and met the main characters. The major theme in all of the books is family and Faith. And it shows that family is not just those that are related by blood and marriage but also the ones who become family by choice. If you enjoy stories about mountain men and various Indian tribes and their customs you will thoroughly enjoy these books.

Good series

It is a great story of family, friends, and neighbors. The differences between people and cultures. The wonderful simplicity of the salvation story. The beautiful descriptions of the American frontier before it was destroyed by those whom believe they are better than others simply because of race, creed, color, or culture.

I did not give it 5 stars because the author and editors did not keep the back stories true to the original book. That works, sometimes, if the series is going to be stand alone books. But when they are bundled together like this you catch mistakes easily

Very interesting.

Very interesting detail regarding history. The descriptions of wilderness also very interesting. Highly recommended. I was a little disappointed that author has the character saying he didn’t find the use of beads in prayer necessary since he didn’t find it in the Bible. As a Catholic praying with beads comes naturally with the rosary. It’s too bad the author hasn’t spent more time studying the history of the Catholic Church, which is the origin of his Baptist faith, even though some what modified. I do appreciate. the spiritual content of the writing. I’ll be reading more of Mr. Rundell’s books.

Buckskin Chronicles

This was by far one of the best western book that I have read in long time. The beginning to end was filled with western movement of settlers seeking new places in the growing West. Not only the travels and tribulations but the sheer determination to find and settle on specific areas resulting in new generations of a family started in the East and ultimately traveling through and settling in Montana, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona, Utah and Wyoming. What a cast of characters and the hardships, losses of family and rejuvenation of new families and friendships.

Excellent read

The author is a wonderful story teller, who paints word pictures that immerse the reader in the lives of his characters.
I am pleased with the outlook on life and the simple weaving in of gospel presentations. The focus on the need for a personal relationship with Jesus is clearly explained.
I also deeply appreciate the Dedications declaring the relationship of the author and his wife. I too cherish my wife. This is the second series I have read and eagerly look forward to more.

A Great Series

Truly an old-fashioned western. Great plot and story-telling without any unnecessary gore, gratuitous violence, or vulgar sex scenes.
If that's what you're looking for, you need to look for another author.
If you're looking for a great series following a couple of generations of young American frontiers men and their families (sorry, just plain English), this is a series I highly recommend.

Rundell's Buckskin Chronicles: The Complete western series

Louis LaMour and Zane Gray have always been my favorite western authors but now I think they have been replaced by B.N. Rundell. Not only was this great story telling, but as a Christian, I appreciated his weaving the salvation message into each story. I'm looking forward to reading more of his books

Mountain Men

When I got this set of books I wasn’t sure what it was about. I very much enjoyed reading page after page of heart stopping stories. Most of all I enjoyed reading about how those that were lost had an opportunity to be saved by Jesus Christ. Best set of books and stories that I have read. Big D

Very good book

This book kept me interested the whole time highly recommend it to anyone who likes to read about the old West. One thing I would like to say, though is there’s mentioned of a lot of religion, which is fine, but with the author only saying that all you have to do is accept Jesus into your heart to be saved which is not true it requires baptism also.

An enjoyable saga

Set in the mid 1800s this is a great story about Christians exploring mountainous Colorado and befriending the indigenous Indian tribes. Eventually they find their home in the wilderness among the Ute tribe. A very relaxing read about a beautiful country at a very interesting period in American history.

Family

A family named Thompsett... goals, aspirations and dreams... reality, joy, heartache and danger. This entire story is a great example of how working together and making friends of strangers can make for a fulfilled life. In the end, the rewards of letting your life be driven by faith far outweigh trying to do it alone.

Rundell is a master of creating characters that readers will fall in love with, and others that readers will want to see destroyed! Heart-tugging, emotional scenes and characters throughout keeps the pages turning!

Worthwhile way to pass time.

I read the series with great enjoyment. Mr Rundell writes good nineteenth century western historical stories with likable characters. The history and wilderness lessons were easy. I might have some idea of how to get to heaven.

Wonderful Series

I enjoyed all 2200+ pages of this series. I learned much about the early west, mountain men, and Native Americans. The Wind River area is still somewhat unspoiled and it’s easy to imagine the ghosts of the Thompsett clan there!

Rundell is always a pleasurable read

Outstanding set of stories. Loved a bit of humor added when least expected or when story guided the characters there.
As I read the massacre of the Indians I wondered if writing it was as difficult as reading it.
Thanks for a great series.
