Malibu Rising A Novel August 1983. It’s the day of Nina Riva’s annual end-of-summer party, and anticipation is at a fever pitch. Everyone wants to be around the famous Nina, the talented surfer and supermodel; brothers Jay and Hud, one a championship surfer, the other a renowned photographer; and their adored baby sister, Kit. Together the siblings are a source of fascination in Malibu and the world over—especially as the offspring of the legendary singer Mick Riva.
The only person not looking forward to the party of the year is Nina herself, who never wanted to be the center of attention, and who has also just been very publicly abandoned by her pro tennis player husband. Oh, and maybe Hud—because it is long past time for him to confess something to the brother from whom he’s been inseparable since birth.
Jay, on the other hand, is counting the minutes until nightfall, when the girl he can’t stop thinking about promised she’ll be there.
And Kit has a couple secrets of her own—including a guest she invited without consulting anyone.
By midnight the party will be completely out of control. By morning, the Riva mansion will have gone up in flames. But before that first spark in the early hours before dawn, the alcohol will flow, the music will play, and the loves and secrets that shaped this family’s generations will all come rising to the surface.
Malibu Rising is a story about one unforgettable night in the life of a the night they each have to choose what they will keep from the people who made them . . . and what they will leave behind.
This book wasn’t up there like her other books but it was a compulsive read. It’s about the estranged children of the most famous man in the world. How they coped without him for survival, what led to him abandoning them and the story of how we fell in love with their mother.
What I liked: June and Mick’s story. If the book was only about that it would have been great. Their story was more so written like Evelyn Hugo and Daisy and the Six which I loved so much
What I didn’t like: The ending. It just wasn’t believable and all happened too fast. There was also too much superfluous information to make the party more interesting and it was really a distraction. Because they tried to fit in so many characters and situations I never felt close to any.
Honestly, based on the cover and title, and not knowing anything else about this book when I started it, I expected very little. I thought it would be beach read fluff. It’s actually a complex family narrative that also does a masterful job of transporting you to the 1970s and 80s. Highly recommend!
You will be drawn in by the historical fictional romance of a Hollywood icon, then be oh so reluctant to put this book down. The family drama and wit definitely makes this one ‘unputdownable’! 🤓😉😎
Was excited for this one after reading "The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo" and "Daisy Jones and the Six. " This was not as engrossing as those books. I do appreciate the crossover characters.
The characters were believable. Fun flashbacks from the 80s. California really does burn! The nostalgia of growing up on the west coast and all of the familiar places and faces drew me in. The family dynamics and drama was familiar and tragic.
This book was great! Loved it. Loved the story line. A few surprises in store. Could have done without the foul language though. Overall, thoroughly enjoyed it!
