How do you rescue a damsel in distress... if she’s already dead?
When Oliver Graham meets a ghost in Lady Maren’s garden, it’s love at first sight for the young tech billionaire. Because his best friend, Harry, was once a ghost on Culloden Moor, he’s well aware souls can sometimes return. When he asks a warlock for help, things don’t go as planned. Sure, he gets to meet the girl of his dreams, to be her shield and protection, but he doesn’t get to choose the location... or the time... or anything else, for that matter.
Her life isn’t exactly a bed of roses.
Alice Munro has caught the eye of Lord Burbidge, and since she’s a maid in his manor, and he’s married, it’s just not going to end well for her. Feeling threatened from more than one corner, she’s becoming increasingly desperate, and is running out of options. When Oliver shows up, he’s like a spark of light in the darkness. He’s smart, kind, gentle, and determined to protect her. He wants to win her heart and take her away from all of this. But to where?
While she’s wondering if she can take a chance, he’s determined that, this time, she gets out alive.

2022 Goal Update (2/1/22): Book #5 on my list of series to Finish or DNF. Honestly, this review might take a while. When I get reading like this, I tend not to want to stop and review. I am hoping to be caught up with this series by the end of March.
Review (5/12/22): Man, my goal update had a spirited hope for my success that crashed and burned. I still wanna talk about Alice. This might be one of my favorites in the series even if none of the protagonists are ghosts that died at Culloden.
I adored Oliver in Harry, Book 55 and I am so happy that Diane Darcy opted to include his story in the series. Alice was vibrant, tragic and a beautiful soul. Her narrative does require the trigger warning of rape and murder.
Y’all who read this know this is a little more complicated than basic trigger warnings.
Overall, this a very strong showing from a series that is generally at max 3 stars for fun from me but this went above and beyond the series norms.
After settling in on a cozy Sunday afternoon with my chocolate tea to read another of these glorious Culloden escapades; I was not disappointed by the abundantly talented Diane Darcy. “Alice” is the perfect tale of the possibility of that ghost you may have once thought you caught a glimpse of from the corner of your own eye. This extension of the Highlanders’ supernatural stories was written so well within the framework of L.L. Muir’s creation that the life of a long-dead young woman became as real as any of the 79. From the unexpected moment in the rose garden, to the very end…in the same rose garden!!!…Alice‘s story was pulling me through to the not-so-inevitable-conclusion. (Anytime the Muir witches are involved, a happy ending is not a guarantee and I refused to look ahead (and won’t allow you a peek either).) But this’ll take you out of the “cadence” of the “searching soldiers of Culloden, and take you happily into a new perspective. Alice will surely make you appreciate the blessing of being born when you were, with the options available to you. Buy this book!
How much fun is this story to be back with Oliver and Harry again? I just love when these two guys get together. Oliver is finally going after his lady ghost and he just didn't know he signed up for Survivor. But anything is pot with Wickham.
Be prepared for beautiful gardens, plenty of brainstorming with Oliver and those perfectly backward moments that Oliver just walks face toward into and keeps on talking.
The fun twist..... Oliver owes Wickham a favor so we're most likely going to be seeing more of these great characters.
When Oliver seeks out a witch’s help to save a woman who had been murdered hundreds of years ago, he’s sent back in time to save her himself.
I loved seeing Oliver find new strengths as he fought to protect Alice. I felt terrible for the position Alice was put in by her employer. The romance between Alice and Oliver was sweet.
Content: attempted rape, sexual harassment, moderate violence, attempted murder, mild language-two cuss words used
This was by far my favorite! ( so far, anyway). Without one of the Ghosts as a main characters I didnt think it would be. Diane Darcy really wrote great characters and I didn't figure out the "who done it" right away like what happens with some writers. What a great story!
I don't know why Diane Darcy would even have to explain about a deadline . This is one of the most enchanting stories in this epic series. I love the story and the characters. I owe Diane Darcy many BIG Thank yous. Thank you for writing this story. Thank you for taking your tie and thank you for being a great story teller.
The highlander series is never disappointing. I have had a wonderful time reading each adventure. All of the and have brought these characters to life in own unique words. Wou
of recommend to lighten up anyone's day in this crazy times that we are living in. Thank you for all the hard work all of you put into your work
What a great story! I have read I am pretty sure all of the books in this series. Some are some what predictably written and yet still a great story. This one was a little more mysterious and riveting than others but I can't wait for more. Where's Soni, and her story? Love it!
A ghost named Alice was murdered a long time ago and haunts the rose bed where she was buried. Oliver, a friend of Harry who was once a Culloden Moor ghost, makes a deal with a witch to save Alice but he didn't know he was going to be sent back in time to do it. Very good story.
It was a great story! I just fell in love with Oliver and Alice, as they are such sweet individuals! Interesting and wonderful choice to have neither of the main characters directly connected to Culloden and the battle. I found it refreshing and probably one that I will re-read.
#59, Alice, didn't disappoint. Even though #60 was released first, I held myself back so I could read them in order. The characters were well developed and the story line kept me involved and entertained.
What a refreshing, fascinating & different Ghosty read! Now this is a new turn of events - loved the characters, the turn around time and, of course, the outcome!
I love this series so much and I'm going to be sad when the wedding happens and there aren't more of the series. I loved this book without giving away anything, I'm not sure I would have thought it was one of the 79 ghosts. No matter what it's a great read.
I've always enjoyed. Diane's books. I liked the strand of mystery that runs through the story. My favorite character was Lady Burbridge. She is one tough cookie.. Good job Darcy!
I didn't want it to end but it has an absolutely perfect one. You really need to read the book "Harry" first, as "Alice" picks up where his ended. The epilogues are top notch.
A spellbinding not to be put down until finished book!
Another wonderful ghost story full of life! The characters are so real that you can’t help but feel their love. Thanks for another fabulous book in such an amazing series.
Loved every word of it! This is an amazing series and I love how each author is able to connect the characters! Can’t wait for each and every new “ghost”!
I loved this book! As with all the Ghosts of Culloden books, there is some romance, and a man in a kilt, though Oliver doesn’t wear one. I’m glad he was able to save Alice
This story surprised me. It was a ghost but....that's all I'm saying. Loved these characters and the plot of this story. So looking forward to reading the next installment of this series.
Really enjoyed going back to finish Oliver and Alice's story! This is a fun quick read bringing a different ghost into the series. Love Diane Darcy's books.
This is Alice’s story. Oliver is a wealthy man. He is in love with a ghost. He does what anyone would do to obtain true love. This is a clean read. It was very enjoyable.
