Halton House is experiencing an upheaval of mammoth proportions and Evie, the Countess of Woodridge, finds herself in the middle of everyone’s squabbles and odd behavior. She hopes a change of scenery will provide a diversion while she and Tom Winchester investigate a case of some missing items, but havoc has followed her to the hunting lodge and instead of dealing with one mystery, she and Tom are caught up in a multitude of them.
.. open up the hunting lodge, with the encouragement of Lotte who has a little job for her. Millicent and Caro can't stop bickering about who is actually Evie's lady's maid, the dowagers and Toodles are following Evie and Tom around waiting for them to set a date and Henrietta has called in an expert to research Tom's family tree determined to ensure that Evie will retain a worthy title which is driving Tom to distraction.
Evie pens instructions for traveling and the couple set off for a couple of days peace ahead of the pack but it doesn't really seem to get them very far or stop the bickering.
A possible murder seems to draw them back together again but who did kill Lord Bertram? Why did the Guildford's let their Grand National horse go for a pittance? What can possibly be going on with smug Mr Carter rummaging through the attics?
Evie and her family are on the case so no solution is too preposterous!
Evie has a bee in her bonnet. And she decides to poke the entire hive with a series of letters to everyone in the household in order to try and bring some sort of order back into her household.
Evie has a new assignment from Lottie, and she's heading to the lodge as it's close by. She forbids anyone but Tom to accompany her insisting everyone has to wait a few days before following her.
A titled gentleman falls off the roof of his estate house. Was he pushed? Or did he jump? He has guests on the property who are not the most upright citizens in the world to start with.
Caro's life is about to change one way or the other.
A fun story with developed characters and a good bit of humor.
Another adventure with Evie, Tom, and the dowagers! They are at the Hunting Lodge and stumble into a death, an auction, and another mystery! Usual antics occur, s new puppy joins the household, and lots of misdirection finally lead to the correct solution!
In this book, Evie and Tom must get away from the family and the help that is driving her crazy, so they go to the Hunting Lodge. There they get involve in a murder mystery, blackmail and Evie gets a puppy.
I did enjoy this book. Although at times it almost seemed that it was just a bridge from the previous book to the next book in the series. But it was still a good read.
I found the quirky characters captivating. It was fun to read a murder mystery with no gore and no evil apart from the entanglements we get caught up in by concealing past indiscretions and how that complicates the present.
Evie and Tom escape the family by heading off to the Hunting Lodge. All were instructed to follow later, and someone ends up dying, someone's true identity is revealed, and there is an addition to the family. Great fun for an outing!
Pearl Hewitt narrates these books, and for whatever reason, I'm able to fall asleep to her voice well! This series of books is pretty clean, and not gruesome, and definitely good for falling asleep to. I listen to these on Everand.
I've enjoyed all these interesting plots and watched the characters develop over the books, but I just don't like Henrietta. I'm sure her personality is there for a reason, but she just gripes my grits.
Easy to read. After ten of these, you can predict what the characters will do. Just a minor point: the dog whose name is Holmes, is called Doyle twice.
