Yaya had died.

Committed suicide.

This person, whom he’d had no blood relation towards -whom he’d called ‘elder sister’ for many years, was all too suddenly gone. She left for him not just a considerable sum of inheritance but also–a child.

That year he’d been just 19 years old, still a child himself, and yet all of a sudden was in charge of the welfare of a 15 year old youth.

This child was not bothersome, he had none of the impatience or rebelliousness characteristic of adolescents.

He had an extremely high IQ, paired with a stability and maturity far past his physical age.

Be it in daily living or academics, there was not a thing he had to worry about with the boy, he was able to keep the house in order all on his own.

But, the more he got to know the boy, the more he realized how frightening this child’s many intentions were.

He wanted to change his mind, could he just take the money and not the person?

I just finished reading Additional Inheritance and it was a fun ride! I picked it up because I wanted to fill in the gaps from the previous two books in the series, Sissy and Winner Takes All. This time, we get to see the story through Adrian's eyes, and I have to say, his character was a riot. He was funny and cool, but also naive to the point of frustration. However, his character development was fantastic. He really grew a brain! It was hilarious to see him mature and become more self-aware.

As much as I enjoyed Adrian's character, I have to admit that Luo Yi stole the show for me. He was such an intriguing character with a bizarre way of thinking that I couldn't help but be drawn to him. I just wish we had gotten more of his point of view to fully understand him. Unfortunately, his father was just as puzzling, and even after the story ended, I still couldn't grasp his motivations for his actions. Both father and son were mentally unstable, making it impossible to empathize with them.

While the story did lose me halfway through, I still soldiered on and was rewarded with some intense angst between Luo Yi and Adrian. The pain and fear were palpable, and I couldn't help but tear up during their separation. The love and hate relationship between them was a rollercoaster ride, and even though there were some plot holes, I'm glad I stuck it out to the end.

The extras after the main story were a nice touch, especially Qin Zi Jiao & Luo Rui's story. It was so good that it could have passed as a short story on its own. I only wish the author would write a novel just for them, but I know that's just wishful thinking.

Overall, Additional Inheritance was an enjoyable read that had its ups and downs. It may not have blown me away, but I'm glad I gave it a chance.

4.75 / 5: On that winter's day, they hugged each other on the snowy street to share warmth, without regard for others. In that moment, the warmth and tenderness dispelled the chill of the winter night, and the heat generated immediately melted the snowflakes covering their bodies. It also purged the lies between them and the frostiness from their past.

Old habits die hard, so don't look back. Some feelings are tough to reconcile, don't force it. One of life's greatest blessings is to join hands and finish the journey together. After all, you'll still have the chance to create fresh memories.

Wen Xiaohui whispered into Luo Yi's ear. "I'm really happy too."

short note. at the end of the day, despite all the pain & heartbreak between luowen (the main couple), this author managed to still make me root for them in a way that are my feelings to accept and that’s completely okay!! their relationship is twisted as hell, but the feelings conveyed between them are nowhere near superficial, so it made their story more compelling.

now to more details!!

the thrilling aspects of this novel that are considered to be a bit much for other readers didn’t weigh down my reading experience, personally. it added more to the angst that takes up 95% of the main story, which is the reason why my rating is so technical because it was a lot. but the softness in which the author portrayed wen xiaohui’s character and the people he’s connected to made all the suffering feel more than just for kicks.

it broke him down to pieces and reshaped his once-naive way of looking out at the world. he changes in ways that hurts everyone who cares for him, including luo yi (who is the major cause of all that hurt), but then he evolves to have a more developed view of the epic romance he’s always yearned for and the life & career he wishes to have, which was soooooo good. the love he originally sought for ended up ruining him in indescribable ways, and yet when luo yi continued to circle around him as if he was the center of his orbit (which he was, indeed), it wasn’t a matter of simply giving in, but realizing that when true love finds you (no matter how twisted), you can’t run away from it forever.

it has a really dark connotation to it bc it makes it seem that wen xiaohui was given no choice in anything, but it’s…really much more complicated. he’s not some weakling. he isn’t someone you can just push over and he’ll be damned if he lets anyone think they can just walk over him, and that includes the love of his life. this is thanks to how his mom raised him and continues to support him, and it makes me so emotional every time i think about it 😭 the network of friends & family that wen xiaohui has is pretty small but they’re so profound, they have such a huge presence in this story—this includes his best friend, luo rui, who is an absolute sweetheart.

in all the chaos and drama that happens, there’s nothing that grounds wen xiaohui more than his mom & best friend, and that’s why all the angst in this story didn’t feel exploitative. he has so many people who care for him, and one of them happens to be deeply …..questionable. to some readers, luo yi is a sociopath; to others, he’s a psychopath. i don’t know nearly enough about these mental health conditions to be certain about labeling him either, but what i do know is that he’s not simply morally grey. he’s very possessive, controlling, ruthless, conniving, and deceitful. the one weakness he really has is wen xiaohui, and that doesn’t come across as cheesy at all, it’s….actually really sad seeing how at loss he becomes when his ruthless ways tear wen xiaohui apart.

luo yi is younger than him and it’s in this way that it really shows bc he has a very surface level of thinking on the ways he can keep wen xiaohui close to him. when those ways don’t work, he’s so confused & conflicted, it would be absolutely funny if it wasn’t so sad. they develop this indescribable bond when they first meet and wen xiaohui puts so much trust in him, and then when luo yi pulls a big stunt, all that trust just completely breaks.

in the aftermath, you don’t just watch wen xiaohui try to pick himself back up from the debris, but you see luo yi have to confront what all those years they spent together were really for. how can he make up for all the hurt he’s caused in a way that’s different from the methods he’s relied on all his life?

both of these characters absolutely go through it and it’s a really tough journey to follow, but i wouldn’t trade it for anything else. they’re so fucking flawed and complex, i absolutely loved it and it made me love the sweet moments they have all the more.

this includes the extras!! i loved loved loved the extras. extra #5 with the Qixi Festival showed a little glimpse of our ensemble cast in a setting where no one has knives pointed at each other, which really meant a lot for me to see. and i know it certainly means even more to wen xiaohui.

apparently this book is part of a big series called ‘188’ (title in reference to a certain character type of the love interests) and at first, i wasn’t really interested in exploring much of it. but then nearing the end of this story, i became curious how some of the characters we meet find their twisted happily ever after.

we’ll see where my mood goes, but all in all!! great way to start my reading year (with some good ole’ emotional trauma).

i do seriously adore wen xiaohui & luo yi….like a lot. for anyone who’s read svsss, it’ll make a lot more sense when i tell you that luo binghe & shen yuan are my all-time favorite ship. so….yeah!!

i really hope this review made sense :’)

1. Winner tales all [Li Shuo y Zhao Jinxin] (3.5 stars)
2. Professional Body Double [Zhou Xiang y Yan Mingxiu] (3.2 stars)
3. Years of Intoxication [He Gu y Song Juhan] (2.0 stars)
4. In Love with an Idiot [Li Yu y Jian Suiying] (3.5 stars)
5. Beloved Enemy [Gu Qingpei y Yuan Yang] (3.0 stars)
6. Sissy [Shao Qun y Li Chengxiu] (3.0 stars)
7. Additional Inheritance [Luo Yi y Wen Xiaohui] (2.5 stars)

男团.

description

description

That's it.

English: Additional Inheritance

I've been a bit hesitant to start reading any novels by this author, since they're usually pretty dark and I've heard the MLs are kinda crazy. I finally bit the bullet and decided to try this one since it didn't sound as bad, and honestly I found myself enjoying it more than expected. There was so much angst between the MC and ML, and at one point, I was wondering how the MC could ever trust the ML again, so I'm really happy it was a happy ending.

The story follows our MC, Wen Xiaohui. One day, he's told out of the blue that his adopted older sister, who has been estranged from the family, committed suicide and asked that he take care of her son, Luo Yi. Wen Xiaohui is just 18 or 19 at this point, and Luo Yi is only 3 years younger than him, so WXH definitely doesn't feel qualified to be guardian, especially not to someone as brilliant as Luo Yi, who has perfect grades and excels in pretty much every hobby he picks up. But once he meets Luo Yi, he takes pity on him and his sad past, and decides to give guardianship a try.

Initially their relationship is pretty normal, and they interact as friends more than guardian/mentor. They watch TV and play games together, and sometimes Wen Xiaohui will stay over with Luo Yi when he works night shifts so Luo Yi isn't alone all the time in his big villa.

However, Wen Xiaohui notices that the people around him who either insult him or cause problems for him all run into trouble one by one. For example, another apprentice hairdresser who looks down on WXH and has attitude with him gets his affair with a married man exposed to the wife who's being cheated on and is beaten up by her hired help in front of everyone at the salon.

Eventually Wen Xiaohui realizes that Luo Yi has a dark side to him, and that he's willing to go to any lengths for his goals, which initially is to protect WXH. Luo Yi honestly doesn't care about what's right or wrong or whether he's doing anything immoral against the law, as long as he accomplishes his goal in the end. Wen Xiaohui forgives Luo Yi's actions this time around, since even though they're wrong, they're coming from a place of concert for WXH, but this kind of sets the tone for the rest of the story.

**Warning: Spoilers Ahead**

I feel like so much of the story follows the format of Luo Yi does something wrong -> Wen Xiaohui finds out and eventually forgives him and gives him another chance -> Luo Yi does something even worse next time to betray WXH. It was a whole cycle that kept on repeating itself over and over until the end. I felt really bad for WXH, who starts out as a lighthearted and happy go lucky guy who's vain and loves sharing selfies on his social media, as he slowly transforms into someone who's always tired and doesn't care about his appearance anymore, all because of Luo Yi. It was a bit hard to read at times.

The relationship itself is so toxic. They have this strong and very unhealthy emotional co-interdependence on each other other, and it's hard for a third party to butt into it. I was actually rooting for Li Shuo, the second male lead, because he just seems like a much healthier alternative to Luo Yi, even as I knew it wouldn't work out with him. And even if it didn't work out with Li Shuo, I was also hoping Wen Xiaohui could somehow run away from Luo Yi's influence and live his life independently with a normal nice guy.

Luo Yi does so much to manipulate Wen Xiaohui it's painful to read. He's definitely one of the scummiest gongs I've read, which is as expected since that's what this author is known for. From the beginning, he was buttering up Wen Xiaohui and building up this relationship with him for 3 years purely to get his hands on his mom's inheritance of ~300 million, which was actually left to WXH and not Luo Yi as WXH was led to believe. He's constantly monitoring WXH's actions by wiretapping his phone calls and putting listening devices on his body so he knows everything that WXH is planning. If that's not being overcontrolling to an obsessive degree, then I don't know what is. And as soon as WXH is done being useful to him, he immediately distances himself and only comes back to the relationship when he realizes he needs something else from WXH.

I think even Luo Yi himself didn't realize the feelings he was slowly developing for Wen Xiaohui. At the beginning, WXH was indeed a means to an end for him. But slowly, as they spent time together and Wen Xiaohui treated him wholeheartedly (and was the first person to do so in his life), he grew this dependence on WXH that he didn't even realize until it was too late and he had already betrayed WXH as part of his plan. A small part of the story is told from Luo Yi's perspective, and there are some scenes near the end where he thinks about whether he regrets how he treated the MC, so that at least tells me that he's thinking about it rather than being completely emotionless and detached.

It takes Luo Yi's death for Wen Xiaohui to really snap and realize that he can't free himself from Luo Yi in life or death. So he'd rather choose to have Luo Yi alive and well so they can spend the rest of their lives together, healthy or not. There was so much angst in the middle part of the story, so I'm glad we got some sweetness again at the end. I had almost given up on a truly happy ending by that point.

The beginning of the song "i hate u i love u" describe their relationship so perfectly:

Feeling used, but I'm still missing you
And I can't see the end of this
Just wanna feel your kiss against my lips
And now all this time is passing by
But I still can't seem to tell you why
It hurts me every time I see you
Realize how much I need you
I hate you, I love you
I hate that I love you
Don't want to, but I can't put nobody else above you

There's sooooo much angst in this story. Example #1:

"I'm sorry I've been lying to you. You're more innocent than I imagined." Luo Yi approached a step at a time. "At the very beginning, all I wanted from you was the inheritance. Afterwards, I wanted your smile, your loving care, your body, and then your heart." Luo Yi forced Wen Xiaohui into a corner, then he easily caught Wen Xiaohui's punch. He bent over and trapped Wen Xiaohui between himself and the wall, staring at him without blinking, with eyes as deep as the ocean. His voice was neither fast nor slow, but it delivered a direct blow to his heart. "You asked me many times which is the real me. I'm telling you, the person you're seeing now is the real me - it's genuinely the real me. I want all of you. Don't think of leaving me even if you hate me."

Wen Xiaohui's eyes widened. The red blood vessels were like veins of poison spreading to his pitch-black pupils. He glared at Luo Yi as if he'd seen a demon.

Luo Yi pinched his chin and gave him a peck on his lips. "As long as you wish, I'm willing to pretend to be whoever you like."

Wen Xiaohui swung his arm to give him a heavy slap across the face.

Luo Yi turned his head as his eyelashes trembled slightly, casting a shadow along his eye sockets.

Wen Xiaohui's hands shook. "Bastard." He couldn't believe that he once loved a youth named Luo Yi - that youth was gentle, considerate, and cheerful but it was all an illusion created by a demon. He never existed.

His love died with the illusion.

----------

Example #2

Luo Yi hugged him tightly as he sobbed, "What should I do then? Tell me what I should say or what I should do, so you'll forgive me. Don't make me leave that's the only thing I won't do." Luo Yi clearly had Wen Xiaohui confined in his arms, but he felt as though there were ten thousand crags and torrents separating them. He used to think that clever people would have a way of solving problems, so why did he feel so helpless when it came to this? The sand flowed out of his hand faster, the tighter he squeezed his fist. Seeing Wen Xiaohui in a daze every day, he no longer knew how to describe the suffering in his heart.

Wen Xiaohui closed his eyes. He suddenly felt a sharp pain in his heart, and it seemed as if his legs had sprouted roots - he was unable to move.

"I'm sorry, Xiaohui-ge. I'm sorry..." Luo Yi's voice quivered as he added, "Tell me what I should do. I'm willing to do anything and I can give you anything at all."

Wen Xiaohui opened his mouth and croaked, "...Let go."

"Today... It's been five years since I last saw mum." Luo Yi said suddenly.

Wen Xiaohui's heart trembled.

"It was the first time she celebrated Chinese New Year with me. She kept me company from Chinese New Year's Eve until the seventh, then she left and disappeared for nearly a month. When I saw her again, she'd already..." Luo Yi tightened his arms as if it would merge Wen Xiaohui into his own body. "I... I actually have nothing. Everything of importance seems to disappear in the end. That's why I can pledge all I have to take revenge on the person responsible for taking everything away from me. I never thought there would be someone like you, and I didn't realise you'd become so important to me. You're much more important than the goal I was determined to achieve, but I realised too late..."

---------------

Example #3

Wen Xiaohui cried uncontrollably, his tears unleashed his pent up suffering and indignation. Luo Yi's twisted and extreme form of love had taken over his life, leaving him with no room for anyone else, and after all the plotting and lying, he discovered that he didn't even have the energy to be angry. Nobody in this world would hurt him like Luo Yi, but equally, no one would love him in the same way. He hated Luo Yi and also loved him. This once in a lifetime encounter was carved in his bones and engraved in his heart.

He was exhausted. He was too exhausted to figure out who was right and who had gained the upper hand - he only wanted a bit of peace and contentment. He could lead a comfortable life if he relinquished this burden, so he would embrace it even if he felt resigned.

After reading Sha Po Lang I decided to go and shop around for a modern-ish danmei because I DO NOT want to think and I wanted one especially with a problematic gong and man did I get one. To my understanding, the 188 group is a series of stand-alone novels that belong to the same universe. All of the gongs (the tops, for you normies) are problematic, unhinged, and insane. Yet that is exactly the charm of these novels.
For more information of the 188 scum gong group, please check out this carrd https://188group.carrd.co/#info

Anyway, what do I think about Additional Inheritance?
I thought it was a fucking romp. At first I felt a little apprehensive because Luo Yi acted normally. He was actually really sweet, filial, and kind. However, he was also acting suspicious as hell, but there was essentially nothing going on for 50 chapters except for some suspicious events here and there. Then the book took a fucking turn and the moment that the *plot* is revealed and you get to see the real Luo Yi, that's when I started to really lock in. This motherfucker is not right in the head. A screw or two is loose in that noggin of his and I love that.
This book is melodramatic and over the top. There are so many messy dramas and twist and turns and it was beautiful. I was promised crazy and I got crazy. I felt quite fulfilled.

Why the 3 stars?
Despite my enjoyment, I can't with full conscience give this more than 3 stars. It was really fun but it was not peak literature. I hope this is understandable enough. I did not hate it, I couldn't stop reading it, it was one of the most fun I've had in a while.

What do I think about the characters?
Aside from Luo Yi, whom I have mentioned as being the crazy bastard & the titular scum gong, we also have Wen Xiaohui as the MC and a couple of side characters who are actually cameos and they have their own books as well.
My first impression of WXH was that he pissed me off a little. I'm not oppose to reading this type of character, but he's a lot. He's shallow, superficial, vain, you name it. He cares a lot about his looks, his weight, how he presents himself to the world. However, along the way I found myself quite rooting for him. He has a sweet side to him, he is kind and helpful to others, he's admitted to himself (and perhaps to us the readers), that he is not a smart guy and he is quite weak, but he was not afraid to throw hands to defend himself and his friends in time of need. He cares about superficial stuff like that time he got kidnapped and got beat up. He cried so much for his nose and the potential of him looking ugly forever. He talked a lot about losing weight and make up and clothes and going shopping. There's not much going on in that head of his and that is fine. It just took a bit for me to get used to.
He was also quite resistant to forgive Luo Yi which I like. He has some spine even though he's weak as hell.
Other characters that I'm rooting for in this book is Li Shuo. That dude is perfect, but to my understanding he's gonna get his own scum gong. Good luck to that guy.

I'm off to read Sissy now. If I'm correct Shao Qun is the most unhinged out of all the gongs and I'm going to enjoy it!!

I was really excited reading AI because the premise and dynamic has been tickling my brain for days. The start was really nice and interesting but ngl it was boring me for some time, until the first revelation. And I was having my own conjectures because of Luo Yi's behaviors but the first revelation at the second half of the book literally pumped blood in my veins and it thrilled me so much I forgot the initial boredom I felt on the first half. And I can feel that everything was fake (aside from Luo Yi's ruthless underhanded behaviors towards people who's a pain in Adi's neck) because it was too good to be true.

I don't really get the hate on Wen Xiaohui tbh. He is vain, shallow, and foolish but he is TRUE. And that's a very commendable trait. I love how he's all shits and giggles, and Luo Yi's all about murder and plotting. I also like that this is pseudo-incest and although the age gap is just minimal, I like that Luo Yi is younger. I really like them! Luo Yi is a great character, and his goals are what makes him so much endearing. He's so true for not prioritizing his love for Wen Xiaohui, and only did so after finally settling his accounts and objectives towards his turbulent upbringing.

And when Chang Xing finally physically entered the stage, it got more interesting. The plot was solid and it was a bit over dramatic but that's a given since that's how SQC writes and I am here for it. Let's hope Yaya rests in peace.

I also want to acknowledge Xiaohui's mum and Luo Rui. They are such wonderful characters, I am so glad they are made. Also, Li Shuo makes me laugh for successfully creating himself as an eyesore not only towards Shao Qun but also Luo Yi. He's lukewarm but not uninteresting. I was also really excited and so happy whenever Li Chengxiu is popping in the chapters, I just love him so much and his bastard princeling of a husband that is Shao Qun. The extras were such a treat! We got to see more facets of Wen Xiaohui and Luo Yi's dynamics. And that one extra where the other three couples were featured was so delightful!

Anyway, everything about this book is such a treat, and I get to still see some of the characters I miss (Li Chengxiu this is you my precious rabbit). And I love how Wen Xiaohui and Luo Yi is devouring each other to the point of bleeding at some point in the novel. They're so feral for each other. It's obvious they're happy and I hope for that until the end of their time!

Additional Inheritance: 5/5

"No one in this world would hurt him like Luo Yi, but no one would love him like Luo Yi."

Oh my god the book was so good. First 188 series and omg I was hooked. Was different from all of the books I read and now I get the hype too😭.

Loved the plot, characters and their redemption. My wen xiaohui little boss baby suffered so much. Also while reading wear your clown outfit,it's a must😭. Overall the book was so good and luo yi you big brained baby.

The book also has a side couple and even their story is so cute. The angst was angsting so well btw had me in tears. I was so hooked, I didn't keep the book down for a minute and omg the plot twists literally got me 😨. Anyway recommending everyone to read this book. I think it's gonna be in my favs list😭.

i once read a short fic with a similar premise so i wasn't really surprised at how well i could handle the toxic codependency of luoyi/xiaohui. i was just MAD that the 2ml is the most perfect gentleman from start to finish but you're telling me he didn't get HIS happy ending????? twice???? absolute cruel. unacceptable. actual rating 2.5 bc as much as i love xiaohui, i thought luoyi didn't really redeem himself until 70% of the novel

edit: i found out that the 2ml in ai is actually a main character in another sqc novel so i will read his story next

(what about the people he manipulated? what manipulatiooon?)

Me encantó 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

🕯️ Li Shuo, protagonista shou de Winners takes all.
🕯️Zhao Jinxin, protagonista gong de Winner takes all.

manipulative gong meets fashionista shou

This story was read after Sissy because it is the recommended order, since secondary characters in this novel appear in the first and make brief cameos. Honestly, the story was very weak in terms of entertainment/enjoyment in comparison to the first (Sissy). There are a number of reasons for that:

This story is basically like trying to get your boy-crazy friend to leave their manipulative boyfriend and each time you think you've gotten it through their thick skull that this person is bad for them, they STILL run back into their arms, so all you can say is "girl if you like it, I LOVE it for you," because they don't actually want any solutions, they just want you to tell them what they want you to hear.

First fourth of the story is readable, with a sort of feeling that something big is going to happen. The ML (gong) puts on a front of being very pitiful and meek, while the MC (shou) is described as a strong-willed extrovert who isn't afraid of showing off that he's gay. By the end of the story, these personalities are completely skewed into something else, and personally feels like a loss.
I loved the MC's initial personality, and that is why I have such disappointment with how he turns out in the end. Without spoiling too much, he is described as not taking anyone's shit and being a bright happy person, and yet gives the ML so so soooo much leeway to act however he feels like, without ever applying any real consequences. This allows the ML to basically take advantage of his kindness and manipulate him by letting him get into situations like becoming a hostage in order for the ML to come out on top for his ultimate goal, revenge, as well as wear him down so much that he can no longer be that bright, happy person he was in the beginning. Even in the end, he states
"He could lead a life of comfort if he relinquished the burden [of running away], so he would embrace it even if he felt resigned." Okay so stockholm syndrome, got it.

The story is, overall, just very predictable once you see the pattern of allowing the ML to do whatever he feels like just because he is so pitiable in the MC's eyes, and thus makes the journey of reading the story so unbearable because you just want it to end.

Another reason I rated so low because, in comparison to the author's first work, the ML suffers NO CONSEQUENCES for everything he did. At least in Sissy we get chapters of the ML being pathetic and obsessed with finding the MC, but we see absolutely none of that in this story; their is no actual wife-chasing if the wife willingly goes back. I felt nothing for the ML and would have preferred he died at the end.

Didn't bother reading the MC and ML's side stories just because I could not bring myself to care at all, the MC's friend Luo Ri's side stories were really enjoyable though so the story deserves it's 2/5 rating just for that

Xiaohui/Adrian is the best

Luo Yi is , but I still love him (and kind of feel sorry for him. That was a really, really rough childhood).

This is dark romance BL, which is the author's specialty. As always, the angst is delicious, the heartbreak real and devastating, and as reader you get traumatized along with the protagonist.

I loved all the characters (except Luo Yi's dad, who is an awful human being and should be erased from existence - fortunately Luo Yi working on it).

The ending is - kind of dark, which I loved and felt made sense considering everything Xiaohui went through.

The story is well-paced and slowly builds up the sense of something not being quite right. Xiaohui who befriends and starts taking care of his dead foster/adopted sister's young son out of love for her - the kid seems nice and smart and sunny, but over the years, something seems out of sorts. And the sense of something sinister slowly creeps up on both Xiaohui and the reader.

Xiaohui, to his own misfortune, isn't the smartest guy around. He's not stupid, but he's a bit dense. He's also a proud, effeminate young gay guy, a romantic who wants romance and not just sex, vain and conceited, but has a heart of gold and is the best friend one can ask for. It's his misfortune that he became entangled with the super smart, super talented prodigy Luo Yi.

This novel doesn't contain explicit smut, unlike most of the author's works, but it's worth reading for the exciting plot and characters. Sadly it doesn't have an official English translation yet, but there is an unofficial translation to be found online.

English title: Additional Inheritance

I love the 188 series and I've already read Sissy and Winner Takes All before this one so I knew all the character cameos. Unfortunately, I didn't end up liking this one as much as those which may be because I was really looking forward to it and it didn't live up to my expectations. I only have a few of the 188 books left to read before I've read them all so I was hoping to be hit harder in the feels. That being said, I still enjoyed it. I liked both characters a lot. It was nice to see Wen Xiaohui be so sure and unashamed of himself. I loved that Luo Yi was pretty much a

Summary: MC is 19 years old when his estranged, older adopted sister dies by suicide. She leaves him a note telling him to care for her 15 year old son (the ML) and he'll get an inheritance. He says yes, they spend time together as a family, MC suspects ML is in love with him but he resists his own feelings because he's technically his uncle.

Non official english name: Additional Inheritance, Additional Heritage or Additional Legacy. Lenght: 106 Chapters + 34 Extras.

Before I start, I think it is a fair to mention that this review will be long. I tend to write more for danmei novels because they usually have many chapters and the plot isn't quick to resolve. Also, if anyone is interested it's best to check the CWs, some of them are on my tags but others are missing.

This is a 4.5 stars but I am giving it 5 stars because I think it deserves it. Shuida's stories aren't for everyone due to the content and her couple dynamics, but for the ones that are willing to go deep into her "188 group" universe, Additional Inheritance is a great addition, pun intended.

I think this novel delivered exactly what it promises. Some people might find it over the top, but I personally love how nuts it turns into. It executes the tension very well while leaving some hints along the way for the reveals. They're aren't difficult to see coming, some guess it way before they are about to happen, but it doesn't feel as if there's no pay off. It makes sense within the story and that turns it compelling. There were many intances where I felt anxious and one of the many things I have to praise the author for is her ability to create an atmosphere of suspense and mantain it until it explodes. It becomes a very fun experience. I also love her descriptions and her writting style, I think it's neat, clean and precise without getting tiring.

Now onto the plot. The story is about Wen Xiahui (also known as Adrian or Adi) who has recently lost his sister (no blood-related), someone he hasn't contacted in a very long time. Once he gets to know of her not being alive anymore, he gets her one last petition in a letter. His sister asks him to take care of her son as his last wish, and to accept an inheritance. Wen Xiahui doesn't have the heart to reject that petition. The son's called Luo Yi, 15 years old, with a high IQ and very polite. However, it seems as if he is hiding something and Wen Xiahui will try to do everything to protect his sister's son. It's a well constructed premise because it hooks you up. There is a mistery, and the more you read, the more complicated and dangerous things get.

About the characters, I am both annoyed at them but also fascinated. I started liking Wen Xiahui a lot. He was the type to be down to earth, confident, caring and extroverted. Seeing him , which is why I got angry at some of his decissions. But I couldn't really feel that upset due to his circumstances, since he is a after all. At the same time, Luo Yi is even more intriguing due to the way the story is set up. He is a big mistery, very intelligent for his age and someone that has very clear goals. Although there is no confirmation from the author as far as I know, . He pissed me off, but I also feel that his character is well done because when I encounter a , I need to feel that and the author succeeded in doing it beliavable and avoid turn him into a caricature.

The relationship aspect left me with even more mixed feelings. First of all, it is important to mention that this is sort of pseudo-incest, but not that extreme to the point of being taboo, since it is between an adopted uncle/nephew, both character don't know each other beforehand, any "romantic" activity doesn't happen until Luo Yi is 18, and they also have a small age difference of 3-4 years. I don't see it as a romance, but as a really good , which is similar to the feelings I had with Sissy/Niang Niang Qiang from the same author. I think this is how I will feel with all of her novels, and I am fine with this because of the realistic elements. The difference is that the last chapters . I believe it is due to the codependency both developted towards each other. I really liked the progression of their stages as a couple, from . It is good take because in other books I've noticed they don't go deeper into the effects of such dynamic between a couple.

One last thing I wanted to mention was my love for the cast. It is refreshing to see an MC so close to his mother, someone who is present through the entire novel despite MC being a (young) adult, I think some books forget that parental relationship which is a shame. Another good thing is the friendship Wen Xiahui had with others: Luo Rui (his childhood best friend), Li Shuo (Luo Yi's love rival, as well as Shao Qun's) and Li Chengxiu, these last three from Sissy/Niang Niang Qiang. It was exciting and painful to see part of that story from Wen Xiahui's POV, as well as recounting the shared events. I am obsessed with this universe so I will be reading the rest of the series soon.

EXTREMELY MANIPULATIVE AND CONTROLLING MALE LEAD. The ML has been lying and manipulating the MC for years. I honestly thought this was just a typical slow-burn yandere romance, but wow, was I way off the mark. The plot twist completely blindsided me.

The ML is a full-blown sociopath and a literal danger to society. He’s so extreme that I genuinely believed there was no way this story could have a happy ending. It felt more like one of those Netflix documentaries about a dangerous ex where one of the characters end up dead.

"I'll make you accept me again. You better not think about falling in love with another person, or I'll kill them."

"Do you think I'm all talk? I'm serious. You're not allowed to look at anyone except me or I'll make him disappear from the face of the earth."

I listened the audiobook version of it and it was a great multiple-voice audiobook (available on 猫耳), easy to follow, good voice acting and clear narration. It made it to the top due to the audiobook quality, but the story itself was fun to follow too!
