A twist of fate stole her home. Magic could help reclaim her voice..… or cost her everything.
Nadja has no choice but to leave the only home she's ever known. She flees her small village when a brutally violent deed upends her betrothal ceremony. Hunted by her former love, Nadja begs refuge at a Music Conservatory she once thought only existed in stories. Inside its ancient walls, the magic of a long-dead race lives on… in the rhythm of musical instruments.
As she guards her true identity, Nadja must master the flute, make friends, and stave off the romantic advances of a rugged classmate. With each new lesson, Nadja feels a secret growing within her that not even she understands. One wrong note could forfeit the very fabric of magic… and her only hope of survival.
If you like tenacious heroines, ancient mysteries, and new twists on fantasy magic, then you’ll love A.K.R. Scott’s lyrical tale.
This duet box set contains the first two books in The Music Maker Series: 1. Inharmonic 2. Perception
A. K. R. Scott, author of The Music Maker Series, writes clean YA fantasy with strong female characters, magical adventures, and a dash of romance. She spent her youth devouring books, and she honed her storytelling and character development performing live theater. When she’s not writing, you can find her making music, guzzling coffee, and fussing over her #bookstagram account. She lives in South Carolina with her husband, two daughters, one rascally dog, and an ever-expanding library.
Inharmonic: I thoroughly enjoyed this book! The characters are relatable and lovable (I adored Pax!), and the concept of music as magic is really fun to explore. As a musician myself, I quite enjoyed the scenes at the conservatory in classes and private lessons. There was nothing that would be too technical for non-musicians to understand, but there were some things that made my musician's heart happy and nostalgic for when I was a music major in college. I'm excited to find out what happens next!
Perception: A fun novella looking at Helaine and what she faces as a result of Nadja's song and disappearance. Short and sweet, and my first introduction to the world of synesthesia (a real-life condition where the brain crosses two senses. In Helaine's case, she can smell sounds). Loved it!
I really like the heroine, Nadja. While Inharmonic (book 1) first few chapters were slow to start, the story was interesting and kept my attention. Perception (book 2) was far shorter than I anticipated but definitely left me wanting more. I enjoyed this box set as a Goodreads Giveaway and will be reading book 3 in the future. Intriguing story! (Also can we please talk about Pax?!? )
