It is the widest, largest river on planet Earth, surrounded by deep rainforest and home to an incredible array of wildlife. Welcome to the Amazon.
Take a journey through South America along the winding Amazon River, spotting tree frogs, piranhas, snakes and tropical insects along the way. Where does the river begin, and where does it end? Which animals dwell in its murky waters and how much life does it sustain in the habitats all along its banks? Through gorgeous, detailed illustrations, the mysteries of the Amazon are revealed.
Aanrader.
The sweep and allure of the contents of this book are undeniable, with brilliance in colors, points of view, revelatory information, and stylistic portrayal that are both realistic and inspiring. With a brief introduction from the author and contents organized into four categories, a massive topic becomes manageable and intriguing. Each nods to subtopics that could (and do) fill other extensive books, yet highlights both discreet details and sweeping relationships, adding to the impact for readers of any age.
Each section encompasses very brief chapters, often only a double-page spread but dense with images and accessible content. From SOURCE to SEA focuses on the physical science of the river at various stages, especially water-facts involving a water/land mass nearly the size of continental United States. WILDLIFE on the RIVERBANK, the next section, explores wildlife (plant and animal) that make the air, land, and riverscapes of this basin their home. The next section is PEOPLE of the RAINFOREST, revealing a very small but important view of facts about the indigenous people who developed within and interdependent with the fantastic and diverse biomes throughout this complex habitat. And finally, LIFE ON THE RIVER is a section filled with examples of various ways that human societies, economies, and cultures interact and depend on the Amazon River, and have for eras long before recorded history.
I admire the planning and production of this oversized and nearly interactive book competes successfully with video alternatives. Sure, watching clips would be a lovely extension of this book, but the slightly retro, very modern style and surprising information invite individual or shared examination of each spread, while sparking curiosity to learn even more. The sturdy binding and paper stock will hold up well over many rereads and it deserved shelf life in classrooms and libraries. This is another wonderful example of a picture book that might dwell in a reference collection, but is also beautifully suited for use in science, social studies, geography, and general nonfiction lessons, discussions, and classrooms. I suggest that you give it a try and then ask someone else about the AMAZON RIVER. It gives you a wonderful excuse to share some of these surprising and exciting details and recommend a wonderful book as well.
Why not start with that question... Did you know...?
Thanks to Maryam at Flying Eye for gifting this copy.
I love these books!
This book follows the story of the Amazon, the world's largest river which has the world's largest rainforest growing around it.
The river has different types of water and water features and a forest that adds to the water too!
The river's mouth is the largest in the world - it has an island within it's estuary!
The eco-system of the river is so important to the plants and animals that live around it, just as the plants and animals are important to each other.
Some of the mammals are amazing: jaguars, pink river dolphins (yes pink!) and manatees to name a few.
We learn of the legends and the people of the rainforest from the past up to now. We learn of boats that traverse the river - these include a hospital boat.
BUT we all know the Amazon area is in trouble, and about the climate action that takes place across the world to try to halt the demise of all such important places. This has been brought to schools by the likes of Steve Backshall, David Attenborough and of course Greta Thunberg's school strikes. In our school our Eco-TA couldn't encourage the children to strike so we had Climate Friday's where the children wore a piece of clothing supporting the campaign - many made in school by decorating old tshirts. In exchange a donation was given and the school owns pieces of forest via The Land Trust.
I love the style and content of this thorough and engaging nonfiction book for children ages 8-12 years old. The Amazon River is one of the world's greatest natural wonders and I love having an entire book dedicated to celebrating it and exploring a variety of topics related to it.
The book is divided into four sections, with each section containing about 12-15 pages of detail: From Source to Sea Wildlife of the Riverbank People of the Rainforest Life on the River
Much is explored in depth and the illustrations all pair nicely with the text. The text is accessible to children and presented in a thoughtful way.
Be sure to check out Everest and the upcoming The Great Barrier Reef, the other two books in this incredible series!
***Note: I was given a review copy of this book via Flying Eye Books. Opinions are my own.
This is a spectacularly illustrated look at the largest river on earth, showing how it impacts the lives of wild animals and diverse human communities. I grew up hearing about the loss of the rainforest, and it is devastating to me that in 2022 we are still watching it be cut down for ranching and development. This book shows exactly what is lost in the rainforest’s destruction. The colorful, stylized illustrations are modern and fun.
This is a wonderful nonfiction tool for reading teachers with not only superior factual information, luscious full-color illustrations, and pointed conclusions that stir readers to action, but also with an interest level that appeals to grades four to adult. Wonderful vocabulary development... excellent opportunities to practice reading skills like drawing conclusions, inferring information, and identifying themes. I strongly recommend this whole series of books, especially to teachers.
Earth's Incredible Places Amazon River - we love books that dive in deep about a particular topic and finding out about the fascinating world of the Amazon river has been truly eye opening. As with all Flying Eye books there is such a great harmony between text and illustrations. One of our favourite spreads is of the boats that traverse the Amazon.
A really beautiful and informative book. You can tell just from the cover that you’re in for a treat with this one! Clearly well researched and illustrated immaculately.
Strongly recommend this one for the 6+ age group, definitely one for older readers too!
I loved how the people of the Amazon were featured but I disliked the downplay of the animals on the river - I would have liked to see more biodiversity.
