Threatened by Tempest’s continued rapid expansion, the Eastern Empire finally starts setting the stage for all-out war with the monster nation. According to Chloe, the time-traveling Hero, there exists a timeline in which the Empire kills Rimuru and Tempest subsequently collapses. While Rimuru’s doom isn’t set in stone, his victory isn’t a foregone conclusion either. This may be a different timeline, but the slime demon lord nonetheless steps up his guard—and just as he does, several Imperial spies infiltrate Tempest…
Padding, rehashing, self-aggrandizing and frustrating at points.
There is a lot of tell don't show in this volume. Trying to convince us that Yuuki is a credible villain and an interesting character is the most egregious example of this. There is already a colossal cast of characters so why not add another heap on the pile? Trying to care about all these bit part players is a real struggle as I try to remember the last lot. Rimaru being an idiot who's laziness is one of the primary drivers for conflict in the story is another point of frustration for me. You can't be all "Yuuki is a backstabbing bitch and I'm totally on to him" in the previous vol. to then be like "maybe in the future we can come to an understanding/be friends?" Hopefully the next vol. will have a lot less circle jerking, introduce a more interesting villain/s and spend more time in Tempest, on the war and the civilisation building. The author also has an annoying habit of reiterating the same information in the next scene with a subtly different group of characters. I like to assume readers are smart and can work out that these conversations must have happened, so if Fuze can't find a way to make the padding scenes interesting then maybe they can cut to the chase.
All of this lends to the feeling that the book both dragged on and finished just as it was getting started.
3.5/5 I finally got around to the 12th light novel in That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime. Picking up where volume 11 left off we now have 3 uber powerful "Primal" Demons added to the mix. Not to mention the time hero Chronoa (Chloe). Chronoa through many reincarnation restarts has seen the future and it's not a good outlook for Rimiru and the monster nation Tempest. To top it all off the Eastern Empire is now on the move and war looks imminent.
Volume 12 is really just a build up for volume 13. We don't see a whole ton of action here. We get a lot of planning and maneuvering. The previously mentioned new powerhouses are all pretty much non existent here. We bounce back and forth this time between the Empire and Tempest as they do their war planning. It's interesting but it's slow and no big plays happen. We also get a pretty big update on how thing's are going on in the Tempest Dungeon. The monsters there are really coming along and becoming big players themselves. The dungeon will have a big part to play in the upcoming war.
I'm really looking forward to volume 13 after this one and some substantial plot movement. There's a few really large reveals in the epilog that really caught my interest. I just wish that this volume would have been more exciting and enjoyable. Not just a 300+ page set up.
Good book, excited for the war. I accidently heard some spoilers but I hope they don't affect my enjoyment. I don't like how they are trying to set up Yuki to be the final bad but they may surprise me cause he feels mid right now. The dungeon stuff this book felt nice instead of boring for once.

The whole of this was high tension. has me gripping my seat.
There are numerous new characters introduced in this book and the plot progression had me wondering what comes next. It was really enjoyable reading all of it too!
At this point, I'm not sure who really has an advantage: Tempest or the Empire, and it has me wondering nonstop who is going to win this. Though I admit, I am a bit (okay, maybe a whole lot) biased so I hope Tempest emerges victorious!
The epilogue chapter was quite a surprise! So that was what all this is about. I bet Rimuru would be so damn pissed when he learns about the truth of all these happenings, especially since his nation is yet again roped up in all these annoying schemes. I'm quite excited to see how he will react to it.
I was so excited when I finished volume 11, I preordered 12 as soon as I saw it. SOOOO GOOD! I raced to Chapter 4 (about 80% in) then petulantly forced myself to wait until the next day, trying to savor it. Man so good! Tension ratchets up as demon lord Rimuru expands his wacky playpen of a domain, possibly too fast and too soon with too many new mismatching personnel additions. How will all these powerful personalities clash and evolve?! Can’t wait til 13 comes out! These are serious brain candy. A true delightful afternoon read!
War is knocking on Tempest's doors. Before the fighting can start though, everybody needs to prepare and the players need a reintroduction to us readers. The volume is very much a prologue to whatever the war with the Empire will include. There is no action, just a bit of kingdom building (mostly military orientated with a bit of technology) and character development/reveals. A decent appetizer for what is coming next.
This series is just stagnating. Nothing interesting happens and even when something happens, it happens too quickly or the author tries to make it funny and it misses the mark. I hope things slow down a bit and we see all the OP action in a interesting way.
It's so sad that this story with good characters, interesting world and good plots is so badly written. Unfortunately, the best way to describe this series is wasted potential.
It seems that as the story grows in the world of Slime so does the need for set up. That’s basically this entire volume. We always heard snippets from the Eastern Empire, but here in this volume everything seems to come to the fore. Regrettably, that’s also this volume’s downfall.
On a writer’s level I understand the decisions made for this volume. It’s a precursor and has to set up history and new characters to an entire nation that was veiled on mystery until this point. There’s no easy way to exposition that without barfing all over the reader. But as a reader I found it to be a frustrating experience. Very little of the book is devoted to the characters you love to follow and the exposition they do provide to allow you context into these new antagonists stops the story to a screeching halt. There was a reason I took a few months off from finishing this.
Overall, I like where this is hinting at going, but at the end of the day it was a set up volume dedicated to what needed to happen to advance the story and at times it felt like a chore.
This volume is mostly about war preparations against the Empire. As always Rimuro is fretting about whether they've prepared enough while his subordinates quietly level up, acquiring ridiculous skills while maintaining absolute faith in their lord. Meanwhile we also get a closer look at the players in the Empire. Yuuki has already risen to command levels after escaping there and, like a viper, is waiting for his moment to launch a coup. The Eastern side also has a bunch of surprising superpowers, some of which have deep ties to Veldora and Guy.
As always, this volume has a lot of well-written humor and intrigue. It's a quite novel that makes you super excited for every next volume.
I mean, would anyone be surprised that I loved this book? Doubtful. This is the twelfth volume of this fantastic series and it give more of the stuff I love about the series. We are now heading into another arc of the series as the Western Kingdom is starting to plan an invasion of the Eastern Kingdom. I love the different political intrigue in these books and how the characters work within said intrigue. I am looking forward to seeing where the next book goes as it seems this will be a fairly epic war!
My heart was racing from the buildup to the upcoming battle, and I enjoyed meeting the new characters. Gobta's promotion to general was well-deserved; despite his character being coward sometimes, he's got what it takes to command an army. The links between true dragons and the primordial are fantastic, and they fill me with anticipation. The upcoming war, I fear, will be very large and cause extensive damage. I can't wait to read the next volume in this series.

I m still in shocked that Raven master is so powerful but got killed rather quickly. I don't understand how Rimuru trust people so easily. I'm wondering who the Emperor truly is. To reincarnate so easily and over how many times? I don't get how the true dragons have problems with each other.
With the start of a new arc, this book focuses largely on the introduction and interaction of new characters as the stage is set for the next volume :- )
Twice I found myself rushing ahead at a pace a bit faster than I can actually read (and thus going back to fill in the details later).
Really this time. I wasn’t too happy of the repeated events or dialogues. Or a character inner thoughts and it will nit change anything of the story events.
This was by far the weakest volume in this series so far. Pretty much all of the content was meetings in one form or another without actual action and around 50% of the content from meetings was just repeating itself several times at various meetings.
Great book looking forward to the war with the empire. Granted there wasn't a ton of action but that understandable setting up the war with the empire.
Wonderful as usual! I got a little lost in all the the war preparations but I held out because I know the next volume is going to be serious action and I can’t Wait 😄
I htink this is when the primal demons are introduced and im a big fan of them. its been a while since I read this one and I dont remember much of what happened so it was probally just alright
