What really happened to Sam's parents? After the events in Covert Commando, Sam Harper and his CIA ex-GF Michelle are ordered to join a newly formed task force. As part of the deal, Sam receives access to the CIA's codeword-only file on his parent's death in a terrorist bombing.
What they learn drives them underground and on the run in a thrilling battle against old enemies and newly discovered traitors.
More of Sam Harper's adventures while on the government's dime.
Thomas Sewell lives in Charlotte, lured there by his wife, but grew up out West. A late intellectual bloomer, at age 13 he graduated from high school and started computer electronics courses in college. (Assembly for 8-bit processors!) Already 6 ft. tall, so no one noticed he was a little young. Bummed rides to school because he was too young for a driver's license.
Thomas has always been an autodidact with a variety of hobbies and interests, especially economics, military history, and the law. Worked in Reston and McLean, Virginia on 9/11, but only ever officially worked for the government as a contractor. Thomas has performed technology and security work for several fortune 500 companies and in a quarter of his time manages a team responsible for one of the world's largest financial networks.
Along the way, he's founded a private security company, an Internet Service Provider, and a K-8 Charter School. He's read over ten thousand books and written a few in self-defense, among them the Sam Harper, Sovereign Security Company, and Mike Drake series, some of which you can even purchase.
This is the first novel I have read by Thomas Sewell. Let me right off say I received a free copy of this book via BookFunnel and I am voluntarily leaving a review. I found Mr Sewell writing to be smooth and articulate. The story he creates is strong and his characters are strong and well fleshed out. The story can be read as a stand along – as I did. But I would recommend that you start with the first novel as I felt I missed out on some of the background. That be said Sewell provided enough background in this novel to provide me with a full understanding of what had happened before
We are told that at the ending of the last book Sam Harper and his CIA ex girlfriend Michelle are ordered to join a terrorism taskforce. Before accepted theh “order” he negotiated a deal. He wanted the CIA file on his parent’s death that occurred in a terrorist bombing. The case file was code word only. Negotiating the code word for this file was no small task. This sets the outline for the story which unflolds in this novel. What they discover in this file puts them on a target list for both their old enemies and newly discovered traitors. They are forced underground. How long can they survive? Will they friend friends? Or just traitors that have turned against them. This is an exciting novel that attracts you from page one and hold you until the last word in the last page. You will be following along with all the twist and turns and you will assume you know who the bad guys are, but then all your assumptions are stripped away in the final climax. I highly recommend this specific novel and would read more works by Thomas Sewell.
This is a brilliant page turner from Thomas Sewell and kept me reading into the wee small hours. Ex Ranger Sam Harper had joined an undercover team and he would be working alongside CIA agent Michelle, his ex girlfriend and long tome best friend. When Sam learned that an American Samoan Army Reserve Centre was to be attacked by a Jihadist cell led by Khabir and that it was to be seen as collateral damage Sam went rogue, he couldn't let that happen, his ex boss always said that Sam wasn't a team player. One of Sam's reasons for joining the team was so that he could access secret files referring to his parents deaths, Sam never believed the official version. For some reason someone wanted Sam out of the picture and when he was set up for a murder that he didn't commit Sam went on the run with Michelle.......but there was nowhere to hide from modern technology. Who wanted Sam dead and why, who could he trust, he was beginning to doubt even the ones closest to him, could the secret bank box hold a clue ? This action packed story twists and turns like a corkscrew, it has nail biting suspense, it covers a rising Jihadist cell, Chinese infiltration, betrayal at a high level, an all round thrilling story. I received a free copy of this book and my review is voluntary.
Interesting and intense thriller Great read, Sam is back in action again with some of the same characters from past books as well as some great new ones in this new adventure. This is a standalone read, the author does a good job of reintroducing details from the past books so you can hit this one running. There is plenty of fast paced action, mystery, intrigue twists and turns as well as traitors in this story. A solid and interesting plot, great flow to the writing and great characters. I was kept fully engaged from beginning to end and did not want to put this book down till I was done. Highly recommend to read this whole Sam Harper series I have really enjoyed them all and they will be put on my re-read shelf. I received this book for free and voluntarily reviewed.
What a great follow-up story. Corruption , crimes , deaths (planned and unplanned), new friendships and love are covered in a tale that ties so many unanswered questions into one neat package. Don’t screw with the surfer dude. He’ll fight back harder than you’d expect.
I expected this novel to be about Guantanamo Bay or another "Rendition Site", but maybe something like "Justice in the Jungle" would be a better fit. Sam Harper should have been with Delta instead of the Rangers, there's a lot of independence to his actions which a more structured unit wouldn't normally allow. There's also a number of military-only crimes (e.g., AWOL) committed which are apparently overlooked, again better suited to a freer structure like that of Delta. If detached to the CIA throughout this book, the military-specific crimes wouldn't be an issue, but in a joint task force, that's not the case. Then there are federal felonies and so on. Lt Harper is very lucky that he doesn't have a nit-picking vindictive boss. As it is, I would fully expect his next/current unit commander to recommend against a promotion to captain … and thus, end Sam's military career.
This was another exciting Sam Harper tale provided to me by the author in return for an honest review free of charge.
This is the third book in the Sam Harper series (hopefully many more down the pipeline) that details the adventures of the main character as he makes his transition from the Rangers to an esoteric and mysterious unit, associated with the CIA (or another member of the alphabet soup).
This story attempts to pull together the details of one of the main character's missions, the death of his parents (at least twenty years previous), and the quest to eliminate an avenue of treason with the Chinese government.
This book reads quite well and is a definite page-turner, and will be loved by aficionados of the kinds of stories that appear to be ripped from the headlines.
That being said, this book is definitely a solid four stars out of five, full of action, and is a definite must-read.
As far as reviews go, this is just my five cents worth.
Sam Harper is an Army Ranger busy doing his duty. His life is made harder by CIA Assistant Director Metcalf who has a secret reason for his hate.
Sam is trying to stay alive and out of jail but doesn’t know that his girlfriend, Michelle, is keeping Metcalf up-to-date with his location and actions. With a friend like her, who needs other enemies.
Thomas writes well. Thomas has a great vision and the words to describe it. He made me travel with him, while entertaining me with his great descriptions. I could not put the book down, and did not want to. I will not give up anything that could spoil your fun. Just get the book, and enjoy your sleepless night.
