A hope lost. A fury reborn. An ancient warrior awakens.
Damian Vesik is back ... but his time in the Abyss changed him. As he grapples to understand his oddly fluctuating powers, a call from his trusted mechanic, Samir, is the last thing he needs. But the strange occurrences at the autobody shop can’t be ignored.
Calling on Nixie—and a rather odd gift from a water witch clan—Damian uncovers a dreadful creature haunting Samir’s shop. Knowing he can’t face a basilisk in his current state, his only option is to seek out Gaia in his quest for answers.
Yet as destruction closes in on St. Louis, the only hope of salvation could be the ghost of an Utukku ... one who is downright cranky about being dead.
Eric R. Asher is the author of over 30 titles, including the Vesik urban fantasy series and the YA steampunk series, Steamborn. Look for his upcoming cozy fantasy, The Theme Park at the End of the World, in 2024. He is currently living in St. Louis, Missouri, where the local folklore often finds its way into his Mason Dixon: Monster Hunter rural fantasy series.
Another great in a perfect series that has you hooked forever. Damien is back, but things seem to be stranger than normal. He’s not sure about the powers he has. Loved everything about the story and the characters. Don’t miss out.
Vesik is BACK! I have to admit with all honesty, that I was dreading the release of this book. Everyone who has followed this story through the first 8 books knows that sadly lost the original narrator, William Dufris in 2020. Amazingly (truly amazing!) a new narrator was found to carry the franchise through the next "evolution" of the story. Now, Travis Baldree steps in to be the voice of the misfits, AND HE NAILS IT! How he has taken the nuances of the characters, given them HIS spin, yet kept them the way Dufris presented them is beyond me. Don't care how, doesn't matter, he did it.
As always the story is engaging, funny, and full of the antics of Vesik and his "crew", as well as re-introducing a very minor character into a greater role.
Get the book. Get all 19 of them. They're fun, they're full of friendships, trials, and drama. And fun, don't forget the fun. (Why do I wish I could insert Graybeard's squawk here?)
Felt so amazing to jump back into this world. I really love these characters, they're exactly like old friends. I love the humor and I love the bonds that the characters have to one another.
One thing I really loved in this book...we really get to see Damian and the others just be "people". In this series, it's so rare that they just get to be and breathe. It was great to see in this one.
Lots new going on as well...new friends, new powers.
Decidedly different, though, in tone. It’s weird seeing Damian so…unsure…is that the right word? But, I love that he is still Damian, even with all the new power and Prince business. Asher does an excellent job of remaining true to character.
Asher has set us up nicely for the continuation of the series.
I have missed Damien's snark and quick wit. I had my doubts that he would survive the Book of the Dead series, but thankfully Damien did. I'm so happy to have the new and improved necromancer back in action. Dream of the Forgotten Dead continues where the prior series left off. Vesik is adjusting to his new stronger powers while battling a couple of basilisks! The action, wit, and characters we readers have come to love were all present.
Travis Baldree had some big shoes to fill stepping in as narrator but I am pleased to say he did so seamlessly. The story booms to life in the unique however similar voices we have come to love.
I really enjoyed the Books of the Dead even though as a miniseries they were definitely darker and moved at a more frantic pace. This book was like returning home. The family dynamic during the downtime is its normal hilarious performance. Love the interplay between the characters as always. Foster and Aideen always crack me up. Also nice to see the cameos by Vicky and Zola. Well done sir. I believe I see an Atlantean adventure in the group's future
Damien is settling back into life outside of the Abyss, but just because the war with Nudd is over, it doesn't mean all is peaceful and quiet.
After a discovery in the wall of his libary, Damien is seeing strange ghosts in mirrors and his powers seem to be out of control, he needs to track down and speak to Gaia.
As always from Mr Asher, a beautifully written story, well paced without the frantic movement of the recent books - a wonderful reading experience full of story and character development. I really enjoyed this book.
Eric Asher has written another smashing success in the Vesik series with this 19th book! Lots of of the characters you love and the action you love to see! While Damien gets a little bit of of down time, the forces of evil don't stop! So he's back to work and finding out how his powers were effected as well as his friends and which foes he now faces. Why are you reading this review when you could be reading the book to see all the exciting stuff??!!!!!
There is nothing I haven't said about this series before that I can say now without repeating myself, but who cares! After all the craziness of the last few books, it was kind of nice to see things returning to a bit of a more normal state for Damian. That doesn't mean this book lacked in any way, it was a blast to read & honestly, it was hard to put it down to go to sleep, lol.
So, do yourself a favor & through your money at your screen & buy this book, you will regret it if you do not!
The War is over, the Mad King is dead, and necromancer Damian Vesik is alive and well, having been freed from the Abyss and the mantle of the Wild Hunt. Things are getting back to normal in St. Charles ... well, as normal as they can get with Vesik around. Because familiar ghosts, magical birds, and ancient mythological monsters are all normal, everyday occurrences at Death's Door. Right?
Overall, another awesome adventure from Eric Asher. This series is among my top five. Funny, magical, adventurous ... I don't have enough adjectives to describe it. Anyway, go read it. You'll enjoy it.
Reading this book was like coming home after a long trip. I love being able to immerse myself in this world and with the gang. Eric Asher is incredible with his character and world building. I can sometimes get bored with a series that is 10+ books deep but we're on book 19 with this series and I'm just as compiled by this series as I was when I first started reading it. That truly show just how grifted Eric is as an author.
Damien is back along with all the gang plus a few new friends. It was an absolute delight to venture back into Vesick’s world. With Gaea busy cleaning up the Wastelands, it falls to Damien to help deal with a threat left over from Nudd’s attacks. I was on the edge of my seat all the way through this book and stayed up way too late but I couldn’t put it down.
I have enjoyed this whole series, but it was really great getting back to Damian’s POV and going on an adventure with the group. I really enjoyed seeing Gaia in her new form. Overall, great read.
I really missed Damian and company. Seeing them together again was something I think all fans of Vesik needed. Always the right mix of action and comedy. Thank you, Eric!
It was great to get back into the groove of Vesik adventures, and great to see him start to deal with his new power level. There was a lot of follow up from the previous books and his time in the abyss, and a lot of musing on time and immortality.
