Wife of one. Mom of three plus a Beagle.

Well, at least that's how I'm described in the confines of my everyday life.

Writing has always been second nature to me. I spent my childhood creating short stories and my collegiate years writing for the campus paper (Go TERPS!) Jump twenty years to the present--I'm still writing. At my day job I spend most of my time writing capability briefs, white papers, proposals--you name it.

Then one day it hit me. It was time to access my own creative power and bring to life the characters lurking in my mind.

I hope you enjoy my first book, Beautiful Nightmare. It has everything you'd look to find in a paranormal romance-urban fantasy-new age novel. Vampires. Wolves. Love. And so much more!

Bewitching and powerful

I didn’t read the blurb before opening the pages. I just saw her posts on IG and decided to see what she was about. I was nearly as desperate for revenge by the time the plot in the story took on a new twist. A beautiful nightmare is exactly what this was. I was hooked all the way till the last page.

I really wanted to like this story... but I could not get into it. Every time I started getting interested, it felt like to story would take a sharp turn in a different direction. Almost as if there were several competing story ideas that ended up being smushed together. The only constant through the story was her love for her sister, which still ended in a weird way.

To answer a few questions:
No—I did not have an issue with how “dark” the book was.
No—I did not have an issue with triggers
No—I did not have an issue with her being a villain

What I took issue with:
No plot, consistency, continuity, or overall storyline. . . If someone asked me what the book was about I would have to stare blankly at them then shrug my shoulders and say I don’t know. Which I find super frustrating because I LOVED all of the characters. Even the characters that we should hate, they were great. L.C. Son’s ability to creat believable characters with their own personalities was amazing. Which is probably one of the reasons I was frustrated with the story itself.

I was all in up until she decided to become a vampire. After that, the pacing goes out the window and we end up with more questions than answers. For example, we get a LOT of clues that Dalcour is a “bad” guy with his own agenda, however we never actually see that or get any answers either confirming or rejecting that notion. Second, what is up with Decaux? I was so excited when he entered the picture then he fell flat for me. We also never get answers/closure about the changelings... What was the end game for them? Was it evil? Was it to help? JUST WHAT?!?!?

Lastly, and then I promise I will stop, I could not buy into the “love” with Sebastian. It was instant, all consuming, then gone... I was left scratching my head and not feeling any kind of emotion like I should. I wanted to be devastated, heart broken, or at least sad. But there was so little build up that it just felt like another portion of a rather dysfunctional story.

Why it still got two stars when I had to force myself to finish it: If the author is kind enough to give me an ARC, they deserve my attention till the end. There were enough redeeming qualities that I wanted to hang on to see what happened. Lastly, I would still read other books by this author. Her writing style is great! The world she built was so vivid I thought I could smell the rank breath of the patrons in the saloon and the characters really come alive through their actions and speech. It was truly just the story that fell flat for me.

New to this author and a huge fan of anything paranormal I thought I would give this a go. I suspect this story when this series is finished will have more context but I was left feeling unsated much like the main character. There is a lot going on and a lot of characters introduced. Many plots and lots of possibilities and yet none reached a satisfactory conclusion. I feel these threads will continue to be explored as the series is written and overall it held my interest for me to finish it. I have more questions than answers at this point. I liked the themes and the idea of them taking back their power and punishing those who bully and vilify them based on gender or skin colour. I struggled with the language and style at times as I couldn’t get on board with referring to a vagina as her preciousness -sorry Lord of the Ring vibes were just to prevalent and every time she got sexy I had Gollum in my head! The flicker of pity for the mother at the end did not explain her cruelness to her own daughters and I couldn’t get onboard with the choices she had made or why there was a moment of sadness there, surely you would want your children to have a better life than you had experienced not revel in inflicting even more cruelty on them than you yourself had experienced? So I guess at times the characters and their motivations confused me. I did enjoy it and I do think this author has talent. I would definitely revisit this once the series is completed and the plot is complete as it left me wanting the answers to so many questions. I guess I just felt the concept is not yet fully realised and sometimes went on an arc that wasn’t fully developed so that plot died midway leaving me confused or unsatisfied. The main character has promise and I hope she finds what her heart is searching for.

Son continues her A Beautiful Nightmare series with this deeply engrossing blend of darkness and intrigue.

It’s been twenty years since the devastating, all-consuming fire destroyed New Orleans, and Chartreuse Grenoble watched her sister Calida burn at the stakes for claims of witchcraft. Life for Chartreuse has never been the same since then. With a weak-minded mother playing at the hands of her lover, Chartreuse has no option but to fend for herself. When the enigmatic, pure blood Altrinion-Vampire, Dalcour Marchand finally rescues Chartreuse from her devastating situation, she has no idea fate has something else in store for her.

Son is skillful at inventing entirely convincing and intricate situations for her leads. Chartreuse, with her determination and perseverance shines through and through. Complex plot unfolds around Chartreuse as her increasingly devastating situation makes her realize that she can’t rely on others always. The endearing, magnanimous Dalcour makes for a gutsy, admirable protagonist. Other characters are equally convincing.

Written with verve and expertise, the novel weaves in complex themes of class and racial disparity, sexual and physical abuse, violence, misogyny, family ties, friendship, self-discovery, duty, and revenge. The characters’ backstories are skillfully integrated, and the growing bond between Chartreuse and Dalcour is full of heart and emotions.

With prose that alternates between stark simplicity and profound emotional intensity, Son has created a believable fantasy world where vampires are thoroughly humane and true friendships endure.

Readers who like their urban fantasy multilayered and intricate with a tint of darkness to it, will be gratified.

Big thanks to Netgalley and L. C. Son for the ARC in exchange for a review.

Chartreuse is an woman, forced into sex work by her mother and a disgusting brothel owner. Their family was run out of their home when she was a child because of her oldest sisters relationship.
With dulling memories and fading hope that a vampire named Dalcour, who saved her remaining family from the fires set to kill her older sister, would save her again he finally shows up.
He gives Chartreuse a option and she must decide her own fate.

I gave this one 3 stars. The writing was decent but the world building wasn't really there and a lot of details were left out. The changelings were very open ended, as well as what exactly an Altrinion is was never fully explained.

A couple of unexpected things that I was really enjoyed was that this was not really a 'happy ending' sort of book. The monster was not redeemed, her actions not justified for the better good. She wanted revenge and she fu*king took it. You go girl. It was also mentioned that the father's memory was romanticized. THANK YOU! It ruins a story when a long dead/absent/terrible parental figure gets their redemption by literally saving the day.
Not everyone's dad is going to show up in a boat with an army to save the day, Sarah.

I loved Chartreuse’s story. Her history in the cruel hands of her family shape her into who she is. I also loved seeing the history of the time, and her reactions to domestic violence in the time period. You were either a whore or got married, but sometimes the chains exist in both of these lives. Every step in her journey was exciting as she makes her decisions that shape her into a dark nightmare.

The steam is hot in this book, and it’s a fast burn. Definitely get ready for a ride with this book. This is my first book by LC Son, and it definitely won’t be the last.

Triggers: domestic violence, gore at times, discusses previous history of rape.

Books that draw you into their world, making you believe that it’s all real and true, are my favorite kind of stories to read. And, once again, L.C. Son has done just that with this new story set in the world of vampires in the series Beautiful Nightmare. Untamed is a fantastic addition to this growing number of books and stories. Thank you, L.C., for the gifted e-arc in exchange for an honest review. It’s always a pleasure to read your books!

Some of the scenes were hard for me to read and I did have to take breaks at times. Please heed the trigger warning given if these things cause emotional or mental harm to you. Having said that, I was able to read and thoroughly enjoy this story. I found myself getting more and more invested in the characters. Chartreuse is surprisingly strong. There aren’t many who can maneuver through life as she does having been through the hell she has survived. It was also eye-opening to witness the horrors of what women have had to endure through the ages at the hands of men.

The world L.C. has created is dark and gothic and believable. I could almost smell the cigars, taste the croissants, and see the seedy saloon and the grand mansions while I was reading. I feel like I actually lived in 19th century Nachiochtes, Louisiana for a time.

This story is a heart-wrenching story of betrayal and abuse, love and loss, and finding oneself, if not exactly how one imagined.

The steamy scenes were well-written and actually played a part in the story instead of thrown in for excitement or shock value. This is a love story at its core, after all.

There are a few twists and a couple of surprises. It all leads to a satisfying ending, which only leaves you wanting more! I can’t wait to read the next story in this amazing series!

I gave this book 4 stars and recommend it to fans of dark paranormal romance, vampire stories, gothic stories, and steamy romance.

When I started this book, I was a bit confused, was this a fantasy book or did I make a mistake? I had to go back and read the blurb again, just to confirm, and sure enough, it is about vampires. My confusion was that a good third of the book was about Chartreuse and her unhappy existence, in a brothel, all her mother's doing. When her sister is condemned to the same fate, Chartreuse is desperate to save her, yet she is powerless. Until a man from her past appears, the same man she hoped for years would save her from this depravity and whisks both her and her sister away. But he is not as he seems. He offers her a chance to never be powerless again and she embraces his offer. But his is not the only offer. Chantreuse is deceived by 2 strange beings and accepts their offer as well. Too late she realises that she is just a pawn to both offers and vows to take control of her own life. Even though the beginning confused me, the story is actually intricately detailed, the plot ebbs and flows, at times I felt it derailed somewhat but over all, it's an interesting take on a young woman, who after years of being controlled and used, finally breaks away and strives to live her life her way.

I want to start by saying this is a dark fantasy with sexual scenes, vampires, sultry and content warnings. Heed the content warnings if you are a reader that is easily triggered. Some parts may be difficult for some to read. L.C. takes the beauty of sisterly bonds and the darker side of lowly woman in the 1880s and feeds an enticingly slow burn of heartbreak, fortitude and inner strength. Chartreuse is the type of 'heroine' readers of all types can find some common ground with. What she endures, overcomes and morphs into was a beauty and a nightmare to behold. Every character has depth to the point you find yourself rooting for the villains alongside the non-villains. Plus, if you like steamy reads, you'll love the way the tantalizing plays well with the plot.

There are a few areas I wanted more detail on and some characters and ideas felt needed a little more depth as well. I'm wondering if we'll get more to shed light on these parts or if they exist in the other series. I found myself wrapped up in the vivid worldbuilding and the prose that sweeps readers off their imaginative feet.

The title truly fits what is in these pages. A darkly provocative wild blend of beauty and it's haunting counterpart of nightmares. Thank you L.C. Son for the gifted digital Arc and the lovely copy I won in a giveaway. All thoughts are my own.

LC has done it again!! Received my ARC last week and devoured it whole! I love everything about Chartreuse Grenoble! She is sugar, spice, and everything not nice! This book has it all! Steam, character development and a twisty turny plot!

First I’ll say this, she is a VILLAIN. So set your expectations accordingly.

It’s clear from the start that Chartreuse is grappling with her own inner demons while living with her despicable mother and beau. The only thing keeping her steady is her younger sister. But once Dalcour swoops in, all bets are off!

Things take an interesting turn from there and I had no idea where this was going but once we arrived in the presence of Sebastian St. John I was swooning hard! I won’t give it all away but I guarantee readers will swoon!

The character development was the best! But my man Deluca stole my entire heart! He is the best friend EVER! Oh and Scotty—wipes brow—yeah I need one of those “friends.”

For lovers of the Beautiful Nightmare universe, if you thought you knew Dalcour—think again! It’s nice seeing him in this book. And we see a bit of Brae & Jerrica.

Oh and Titan!! Hot DAYUMM!!!

Yeah...read this while I go fan myself!

L.C Son is a new author for me and writes with a very unique style. It is dark but full of hope, vivid and well developed, and raw but sophisticated. Her world-building and character development are truly impressive as well. I did have a few minor issues with the story, the most obvious ones were the overuse of the same pet name multiple times in a short dialogue and the use of "preciousness" as the term for female private areas. “Red” “Beloved” and “Dear Sister” are the few I can think of off-hand that continued to come up over and over again...and "preciousness" made me think of Golom from Lord of The Rings. I don’t dislike pet names but they are seriously overused and detract from the reader's experience and fluidity. I definitely recommend this story but may not read any further because dark just isn’t my thing. BUT I am a true fan of Son’s idea to tell the story from the villain’s perspective.

I would like to preface my review with the fact that I don't normally read paranormal/fantasy style romances, so my enjoyment of this was slightly affected by that.

Chartreuse is a woman who was born a few years too early. She's very much spirited and willing to stand up for herself, which given the era this book is set in, was very uncommon and therefore causes her some problems. Most especially with Monroe, the owner of the brothel she's forced to work in, due to her mother being Monroe's lover. Chartreuse will walk through fire for those she loves, and after the loss of her older sister, that concept is only intensified as she intends to save her younger sister from the same fate as her.

This book had some good individual plot lines in it, however, I didn't feel like they weren't executed as well as they could have been. There were a lot of open ended questions still at the end of the book, as a lot of the character arcs seemed to only be half developed. Now, I don't know if that's maybe due to some of them characters possibly getting their own books, or already having them, or not, but I felt like this probably could have done with being a duet, as it did feel like quite a long book to begin with.

Likewise, the romantic element in this wasn't quite what I was expecting... I was expecting a regular HEA but this book definitely diverts away from that, with Chartreuse having more than one lover throughout the book, (Side note: This is not a reverse harem book). Each time I thought I'd gotten my finger on who her final love interest would be, the script flipped and she ended up getting physical with someone else. It kind of confused me a little and I felt as though I didn't really know who to root for. Also, although Chartreuse worked in a brothel and has multiple consenting partners throughout this, I do think this is quite a slow burn story, as we don't really see her with anyone she's chosen herself until about 70%.

The main reason why I rated this 3* though, was because it did keep me on my toes, with all the unexpected storylines and I liked that throughout the course of the book, Chartreuse actually took on the role of the 'villain'. Whenever I thought I had an idea of where the story was going, a new thread emerged, which was confusing but I did also like the fact that it wasn't 100% predictable. It also gave me 'TVD/The Originals' vibes, so I liked that aspect lol. However, I do think there should have maybe been more focus on one or two of the 'twists' in order to make this less confusing and to provide the reader with the answers they needed. As mentioned though, I'm not a regular paranormal romance reader. If paranormal romance is something you read regularly, you may find this more enjoyable than I did.

*ARC received in exchange for an honest review.

*TW: This is a paranormal romance with a prominent mention of vampires.

Wow! This is one amazing story of female empowerment! Such a wonderful story built around a time long past weaved with vampires. The story does involve some very sensitive topics but the author does such a wonderful job in building the strength and courage of her character from what she goes through. It is such an amazing story of Chartreuse and how she takes over her own life and helps her sister to get out of the only life she has ever known. It is a dark world she paints but also very beautiful in Chartreuse's strength and love for her sister. I highly recommend this story if you do not have strong triggers and love a strong, independent woman!

What a story! The author once takes you on a journey that takes hold of you and is so descriptive you feel as if you're there with the characters. It's one that has you feeling so many emotions and isn't that what a book is supposed to do. This story exceeded my expectations! You can read it without having read the others but you still should read them because if you haven't started this series you're definitely missing out!

I found the synopsis to be intriguing when I requested an ARC of the book. The twist on the standard vampire story helped the overall plot as it wasn’t super traditional. Chartreuse as the main character is something I still cannot figure out if I liked. I appreciated her spunk, sexuality, and goal to be in charge of her life but I couldn’t really connect with her. The love interests in the story were too sporadic at times including the ending chapters which seemed to come out of nowhere. My biggest issues with the book was the dialogue. The author attempted jargon from the 1800s but then pet names like “baby” and nuances like yelling “crap” didn’t fit. The pet names were extensive and repetitive and really took away from the scenes. Overall I think the story was okay but the character conversations did not do it for me.

I ❤️ vampires. The darkness. The lust. But Untamed is more the nightmare story of the woman BEFORE she became a vampire so you can see WHY there's about to be so much rage, blood, and carnage. And I loved it. The story is so deep & well written that it really delves you into all aspects of her horribly traumatic life to the point that you might want to turn as well so you can HELP her seek revenge on these crazy hateful people.

It is set in the early 19th century and the writing so clearly and eloquently reflects that. The continuity holds strong throughout and really takes you to that dark place so long ago but in a manner that is comprehensible to normal readers. If this period truly isn't your thing, leave the book alone if you're looking for a modern vamp story

LC has officially captivated me. I am not a fan of romance, but throw some Vampires in the south with an amazing time period, you have an amazing story. I read this not knowing there was a pervious story, it was easy to pick up on though.
The characters LC has developed are stunning. Right from the beginning of the book I could already feel myself getting emotional connected to Chartreuse and hating the situation she is in. And also hating Monroe. Like really hating.
The pacing in the book was perfect. Whenever I felt like putting the book down LC threw a curveball and I couldn’t let go. I’m very happy to say, I will be following LC throughout this whole universe she is creating.

Untamed is an engrossing story where the main character is the light in a world full of darkness. Even though there is a lot of build-up until we finally meet the main love interest, I thoroughly enjoyed the way Chartreuse strived for a better life for her sister, and then for herself. In a time where women are seen as property, I enjoyed following the main character as she is thrust into the world of the paranormal, and takes life by the horns, scratching the life she wants out of the very world that seems hell-bent on holding her back.

" The truth is a woman with her own mind is a villain to the patriarchy and Victor to the feminine oppressed."

This entire book screamed women empowerment. Chartreuse lives a terrible life and sees no way out until Dalcour Marchand comes back into her life. She only knows one thing for certain; she will NEVER let anyone control her or life again!

Quote: "The truth is a woman with her own mind is a villain to the patriarchy and victor to the feminine oppressed."

With everything that is going on, this is exactly the read I needed!

This was such an empowering, dark, and heartbreaking vampire read. I thoroughly immersed myself in this book and felt annoyed by daily life whenever I had to stop. I'm so grateful that I finally had the chance to complete it. Untamed: A Beautiful Nightmare Story was a phenomenal dark tale that deserves so much more hype. And that ending! Bravo, I was very pleased.

"If anyone has cause to light a fire it is me. But my plans far outweigh a mere flicker. I intend to burn it all down."

Set in the early 1800s, Untamed tells the story of Chartreuse, a young woman stuck in a terrible brothel. When Dalcour, a powerful vampire, saves her and her little sister from this despicable place, Chartreuse is given the opportunity to never be powerless again. But her deal with Dalcour is not the only dark alliance she forges in her pursuit of revenge...

Though this story is about a young woman taking back control about her own life, it is a very raw tale filled with darkness. And even though I sympathized with Chartreuse, she definitely is the bad guy of this story. But I thought it was very refreshing to read a book about the villain for a change.

I enjoyed the overall plot but I felt a bit lost at some points. I still have many unanswered questions so I do hope a second book will follow with more background information and more in dept world-building. But those little struggles with the storyline were easily set aside by the fantastic character building. I loved to see how our main female lead developed throughout the story, even though she didn't necessarily change for the better. I also adored some of the side characters such as the loyal Scotty and the handsome Titan!

Many thanks to the author for gifting me an ARC e-copy in exchange for an honest review.

Maltreated and exploited by the very people who were supposed to protect her, Chartreuse is heart breakingly vulnerable, and will do anything it takes to protect her siblings...

Even if it means being sired by Dalcour... Having made the choice, Chartreuse bites off more than she can chew when she also makes a deal with something darker...

𝗜 𝗮𝗺 𝗻𝗼 𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘃𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗰 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴. 𝗜 𝗮𝗺 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲. 𝗕𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗜 𝗮𝗺, 𝗶𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗺𝘆 𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁 .

The story explores every facet of Chartreuse's personality... as she explores who she can be without anyone to control her; she is unapologetically herself...

L. C. Son is a newer author to me. Although she has written several books, this is the first one I have read of hers. I am so glad that my friend Trayly introduced me to her work. She is an incredible author whose writing brings you into her world and has you feeling like you are truly there.....living in the moment. Her writing style is very descriptive and you truly feel like you are participating along with the characters that you are reading about. This book is a villain organ story that has a ton of information to help you understands some of her other series. This will be helpful to readers who are new to this authors work

This story shows the villain origin story of Chartreuse Grenoble. In the late 1800's women were treated terribly. forced to become also like a pet. The horrors that Chartreuse had to deal with and overcome were sometimes so heartbreaking, I needed a minute. The love and loss that she had through her lifetime was soul crushing and I found myself feeling for her. What I do love is that she didn't feel sorry for herself. She felt those losses and turned it into her own power and became unstoppable. I loved how Chartreuse took a disastrous life and made it her own. The true embodiment of a powerful woman. I truly adored this story even though there were parts that were hard to read. L. C Son is a true words woman and she has found herself a fan for life. This story gets an amazing 5 stars.

****** Content Warning: This book is a dark paranormal read. Please heed the warnings that are clearly explained at the beginning of the book before proceeding. L. C. Son does a great job with her content page. She encourages you to heed those warnings prior to starting this book. If certain content can have a negative effect on you, please forgo this book.

Well, Clutch My Pearls!!

This book by L.C. Son is one of my favorites! I’m glad I read a few of the Beautiful Nightmare books before reading Untamed. If Untamed is the first book you read from the series, I recommend reading Beautiful Nightmare next. I’m a sucker (pun intended) for prequels that are well-developed and provide much-needed satisfaction in understanding complex characters. It’s great to see a heroine who decides to save herself and support the ones closest to her. I’m not into fantasy/vampire novels; I tend to have trouble following different worlds (I’m more of a realist). But I made a huge mistake in not reading Untamed sooner. Once I started, I couldn’t put it down. It was exciting, easy to follow, and left me saying “My Oh My” at some of the juicer parts 😊. I’ll be reading more from L.C. Son.

This was dark, twisted, and unforgettable. She might be a "villain" but Chartreuse is a very likable character, who has clearly been driven to where she ends up. This is one of those books where you're rooting for those seeking revenge, tired of being pushed down for who they were born as. Each character is unique and well-developed, giving them depth as they come to life on the page. It can get really dark, so heed the warnings before you dive in. I will admit there are moments that made me sick to my stomach, but they're instrumental in pushing the story forward and giving you some real insight to the characters. Overall, this is one dark romance I just couldn't put down once I started.

─ Even villains deserve happy endings✨

New Orleans!!! Vampires!!! This book reminded me of my favorite TV Show ever The Originals.

The book is set in the early 1800s and it follows the story of Chartreuse Grenoble, a strong woman who has been through hell. When a pure blood vampire Dalcour Marchand saves here from her miserable life she gets a lifetime chance of becoming a vampire herself. But there are a lot of things she doesn’t know.

This is such a well written dark and steamy fantasy book and I enjoyed it quite a lot. Calling all vampire lovers, this is the one for you!🩸🧛
