Shifter Rescue #1

Baby and the Wolf

Rate this book
Just when Emmett thought things couldn't get any worse...

Orphaned at the age of nine and sent to live with his abusive uncle, Emmett Keefer felt his life was over before it even began. Eleven years later, desperation gives him the courage to run…right in front of a moving vehicle. Not his smartest decision, but he can’t be too upset when he winds up in the arms of his gorgeous hunk of a rescuer.

As a mixed breed wolf shifter, Ryker Sullivan long ago accepted that he would never be Alpha of his own pack. Instead, he focuses on saving other shifters from being persecuted or, worse, killed for not being pure breeds. Getting involved with the human who ran in front of his truck would be a giant mistake, but he can’t just walk away after nearly running over the guy.

The attraction is instant on both sides and giving into a one-night stand seems harmless, but neither man is prepared for the truth about Emmett and how his mother died…or how it will change their lives forever.

Bullets and Babies!

Victoria writes about guys loving other guys in between dodging bullets, kidnappers, and serial killers. She enjoys putting them through hell to get their happy ever after—it’s a character flaw she embraces.

She also believes that family is who you choose, that dogs are often much wiser than human beings, and that we’re steadily destroying the world we live in.

And if people read more books, they'd be much happier.

Baby and the Wolf by Victoria Sue
Shifter Rescue book 1. Paranormal M-M shifter mpreg romance. Fated Mates.
Emmitt and Ryker have a chance meeting with instant attraction that neither can resist. Ryker soon finds out that Emmitt is not fully human either and their night of passion has consequences.
Plenty of shifter politics with Ryker on the side of good and a habit of protecting the innocents.
Several ongoing story arcs and quite a few characters that will have bigger roles in future books in this series.
Emotional and heartwarming.
Cliffhanger.
My first mpreg. I enjoyed the romance and promise of protecting those that need it.

🎧 I listened to an audiobook that was narrated by John Solo. His did a great job with keeping the two main character voices distinct and voicing clear emotional moments.

This was sweet and sexy, as you would expect from Victoria Sue. Definitely insta-love but with shifters that's always given a bit of leeway with me. Still, this relationship *in all ways, LOL* moved fast.

I liked the plot beyond the characters, what the focus of this series is going to be, rescuing omega shifters in trouble. The characters are all well rendered and likeable, the story moves well and the writing is as excellent as I always expect from this author.

Still, while I did enjoy reading, I have to confess I wasn't blown away. I think I've been spoiled by the action and intensity of the previous stories I've read by VS. That said, I did enjoy it and look forward to more from this universe. Reading time well spent. 💜

I liked this and I will probably want to read the rest of the series, but I do have to say that everything felt a bit superficial. I was really missing some depth here.

This looks promising. Despite the spelling mistakes in the blurb...

Layer instead of later?

And

Ryker Sullivan long ago accepted that he would long ago never be Alpha of his pack.

I'm not used to this by Victoria Sue.

That was such a shitty ending why would you do that to a person. Right when I'm all happy that a baby is born and all, somebody calls in a panic to tell they're being sold💀💀.

Sometimes love sneaks up and sometimes it hits you broadside like a truck. Emmett wasn’t expecting to find a one-night stand when he escaped his cruel uncle, let alone his mate. Ryker never thought he’d get a true mate since he was only half wolf. Lady luck has a whole lot of surprises in store for them and their friends. I loved how confused poor Ryker gets when he first meets Emmett and how protective he becomes. Shifter Rescue is a great new series for fans of omegaverse, mpreg, and paranormal romance.

3.5 stars for me. I love Victoria Sue's older writing, and she has some great mpreg stories that I love very much (Sirius wolves, Alpha King, etc) but this felt a bit too...boggled down by side characters and action, and it kinda took away from the romance for me?

I don't know, just something about the pace or something just kinda kept pulling me out of focus from the story.

Also, trigger warnings for reference to rape, pregnancy loss, and harmful treatment of omegas.

3.5 stars.

There's a lot to take in in this book. There are so many characters and shifters I had a hard time keeping up until near the end. I’m still confused about a couple of them. Even so, I enjoyed the book. I love big, protective men and Ryker fits that perfectly. I liked Emmett too, and I absolutely adored young Calvin, a seven-year-old boy. Ryker’s a big softy when it comes to Calvin and his newfound mate.

The next book is Kai’s, one of the pregnant omegas who I loved in this book. Baby and the Wolf ended with a cliffhanger with regard to Kai.

If you go to read this, try to take note of all the pack politics and all the characters. It all comes together, but it’s confusing at first.

This is one of those times when I REALLY wish Goodreads had half-stars. I'm rounding this up instead of down because I did love Emmett and Ryker together, and I loved Calvin.

Exciting, loving, wild and heartwarming...
A chance meeting and Emmett met Ryker in a one night stand, then later, he delivers some truths and shocking news.
Emmett, dark curly hair, small of stature and thin,

has physical issues and has been a slave to his cruel uncle. He's a non-shifting panther.
Ryker, big, muscled, and strong, a wolf mixed breed who shifts,

works for a corporation charity rescuing kids, omegas and more.

Ryker goes to the safe place to talk to his boss, Zeke, and then to Emmett to deliver the surprise information. A lot is happening, it's a well written omegaverse, and many wonderful characters, shifters, and troubled folks, too. The evil is lurking.

I liked the men and the hot sexiness, but also the exciting tale of these downtrodden people and their escape from the tormentors.

ENJOY !

Drama, babies, and lots of high end action. Yes the romance was lightning fast insta love, but considering it's shifters, it's excused. I loved this. 5 ⭐

Audiobook Review:
Overall – 5
Performance – 5
Story – 5

Great story, great audio performance!
I loved this book when I read it and I loved it even more after listening to John Solo’s excellent performance. I love it when a favorite author and favorite audiobook performer come together and make something special like this.

I was gifted a copy of this audiobook but no review was required or requested.

Original review below:
I couldn't put it down!

I did a beta read of this book back in June and I couldn’t wait for it to be published so everyone could read it. There is a lot going on in the story, as it needs to help set up the rest of the series, but it wasn’t so much that it was at all hard to keep track of.

The blurb is excellent so I’m just going to say how much I loved this book. Once I started reading it I truly couldn’t put it down. Emmett has a lot to learn about himself and some of it he has trouble believing. While the attraction between Emmett and Ryker is instant, it was supposed to a one-off, they weren’t supposed to see each other again but fate had other plans.

I love how Victoria Sue wove all of the different threads of this story together. Her storytelling ability is amazing and I can’t wait to read more books in this series.

A copy of this book was provided to me at my request but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

I wanted to love this because I generally enjoy this author's work and because the blurb, coupled with the cover photo, led me to believe it might be just the trope to brighten a gloomy day. And it was, in part, but a few messy editing errors, including character confusion, dulled my pleasure. Reading, for me, is like taking a busman's holiday and glaring errors pull me out of the story. A strong proofread would have helped this story tremendously. That being said, the story itself was fine and I liked it as it gave me a few hours of escape.

Emmett, the omega, was strong and sweet and just perfect for Ryker, the half-breed alpha who possessed leadership qualities and strength but with a heart of gold. And he loved his mate, Emmett, with all his heart. Just like Goldlilocks, the vibes in this relationship were just right. The little orphan wolf, Calvin, was a sweetie too. His plight added to the story and his page time was just perfect for his role. I love children, just not in my MM romance books. But Calvin wasn't disruptive to the story at all. In fact, his role enhanced the drama and also showed the MC couple's strength of character.

I'm looking forward to more in this series and to learn what happened to Kai, the pregnant omega who disappeared after a cry for help in a mild cliffhanger.

Rarely do I give a shifter book 5-stars because they are short, cookie-cutter stories... but, NOT this one!

Let me start by saying that CALVIN stole the show and everyone else just filled up the pages to make a heartwarming and entertaining story! There was world-building that flowed effortlessly in the background, thank you Ms. Sue for that. Even though I wasn't sure about the characters for the first 25% or so of the story, they just seemed to magically start to explode onto the page when you least expected it. Nice... *grin*

Ryker and Emmett had a lot of personal discoveries to make and battles to fight before they could have their HEA. But come hell or high water, they were determined to share the birth of their child together... surrounded by just a few more family members and friends than most would expect or be comfortable with... Welcome to the Blue Ridge Pack!!!

Now, if all goes well, I will be jumping right into Baby and the Panther! 🤞

The plot of this book was pretty interesting, but I disliked how the couple interacted from the beginning, it was like there was no reason at all for them to be attracted to each other - even if there's the claim that they are mates, point that I didn't really get until someone actually sad it - but they still find themselves in bed. I didn't like that lack of info very much.
The world-building was actually interesting, where shifters of a different kind have different rules or physical aspects.
The secondary characters are well built - I expect there'll be books about them - and the stories of each component of the pack will definitely be interesting.
Calvin was amazing, and I loved how he was actually really realistic as a child.

Nice

This was a nice shifter book. I love the world that was formed and the two MC’s went in their journey to their HEA. I had a live hate with E’s naivety. It was cute in some parts, in others it made me want to shake him. I’m pretty sure I loved R. It was interesting watching both MC’s navigate through their childhood trauma to help form the new pack and the roles each other them took as they got there. The writing was good the smexy was hawt and the side characters…… I can’t wait to read their book. Shout out to a kick a$$ panthera.

In true Victoria fashion, I'm in love with the characters, the plot and in wait over what will happen next. Here we meet Ryker, the alpha wolf with a past that makes him worry over relationships, and Emmett, a shifter omega who doesn't even know he's a shifter. Between well fleshed out characters and the attention to detail, Victoria made a wonderful world from the small snippet named baby and the bear. I'm so glad this is becoming a full series!

This was the wonderful story about fated mates finding love! But Ryker, an Alpha and Emmet who is an Omega have a difficult path to navigate to be together. The story is rich, full and complex, there is a lot going on. I had a difficult time putting this down, who needs sleep anyway? Lol! I love how the author has other story lines woven throughout. I cannot wait for the next one! So many twists and turns. Overall a fantastic story, really well written, highly recommend!! I’m voluntarily leaving a review form an advanced copy that I received.

Insta love, a baby, and guys who think they do not deserve the desires of their hearts. This was a good read, predictable in spots. I do want to continue on to the next one. The story did contain some unexpected twists.

Holy shit I was expecting something light not the gruesome details of sexual slavery and forced pregnancies.
Will I read the second book, though? Probably yes because of the cliffhanger ending

I have to say that I really liked her Kingdom of Askara Series, even though the stories could be rather emotional at times, as in make me cry my eyes out and scream. This is the first other series of this author I picked up since and I have to say that it is, thankfully, not as dramatic as The Alpha King.

The plot and stories are interesting enough to make me keep on reading and the characters are likeable. What I didn't feel was the strong connection between the main couple. There were no "moments" if you know what I mean. I didn't get the feeling that aside from their innate connection that they could otherwise be together. And being called beautiful is starting to become a cringe trigger for me. I always start thinking, so, is that all he is to you? What if there is an accident and his face is scarred after? What happens when you both get older and wrinkled? Being attractive to one another is important for sure but, at least in my humble opinion, not be the first word coming to mind when saying why you love someone. It is much more meaningful when you do something intrinsically you, like picking up and comforting a child, and when you look up your partner can't help but say I love you with adoration in his eyes, instead of looking at you in awe like he can't believe like someone as pretty as you can't possibly be with someone like him and uttering I love you.

What I felt most connected to in this book is Ryker and Emmitt's parental feelings toward the little boy Calvin. Their feelings and emotions towards the boy were so much more palpable that the ones toward each other.

What the book certainly did is a good job making me care for the side characters, as I now have to go on reading what is going to happen with Kai.

"Baby and the wolf" by Victoria Sue is book one in the "Shifter Rescue" series. It was an interesting read with a storyline I have never read before. I enjoyed reading about something I have never read about. Emmett has grown up knowing he was different, but he never found out really why until he met Ryker. Ryker is a shifter and is drawn to Emmett and knows that he is about to change Emmetts' world. Ryker needs to do it without scaring Emmet away. My favorite scene of this story was when they went to the cave. Victoria knows how to write to have you wanting to read on in the series. I will definitely be adding book two to my list of books to be read.

I thoroughly enjoyed the prequel: BEAR AND THE BABY - here's my review:
This was such a sweet story. I'm sure every reader was saying "Drop the jerk!" regarding the MC's boyfriend. He was a shallow, entitled, selfish, conniving little s**t. He was only with the older hard working MC for what he could get from him - certainly not caring what was best for him because he was too self-centered. In contrast the the Bear shifter MC was brave, resourceful, determined, and grateful. The male Omega is gentle, sweet, younger but a great deal more mature. I loved the interaction between the two MCs but getting to their HEA isn't easy and you hurt along with them during their journey.

WOLF AND THE BABY takes place in the same location. A world where few Humans are aware of the existence of shifters. The groupings these various shifters live in is fraught with danger, neglect, abuse, and death. The shifters especially vulnerable Omegas and pups, as well as young Alphas need some place to go to heal physically, mentally, and emotionally. They need to be protected. They need to be reprogrammed from the abusive litany they were brainwashed into believing. They need to learn to trust again.

It takes a special team of shifters and a few Humans to make this happen. To give these hurting souls a safe refuge to come to were they aren't judged, blamed or revictimized. They have some for the first time regular meals, proper shoes & clothes, and shelter. The Omegas (male & female) don't have to worry about being passed around to others in their pack or other shifter group. They can finally rest.

I won't spoil this incredible story for you. It is so poignant and full of surprises. Danger lurks. Violence or the threat of it is a fact of life. Many lies are told and truth withheld. Sometimes it's hard to distinguish the good shifters from the bad. I am so eager to read the next book in the series!

I would like to say that I am a big fan of a book where the men are pregnant. It's an interesting story. Ryker and Emmett have a chance meeting. They had no idea what it would lead to. Both of them have had rough childhoods which seem to be following them. I like the character that both Ryker and Emmett have despite their childhoods. They both want to help and protect the less fortunate.

The book does end with a bit of a cliffhanger.

After re-reading, I liked this book a lot better than the first time around.

(Original review:) A little disappointing, tbh. I’m familiar with this author’s work, and have enjoyed a lot of it, so my only conclusion here is that she needs beta readers and/or proofreaders. Too much of the world building came across as very confusing and information was dropped sort of here and there, very willy-nilly. I understood the gist of it all but some serious clarification would’ve made for a more meaningful read.

The characters are all good although I think they deserve some fleshing out as theyre rather two dimensional.

SHIFTER RESCUE

WOW!! I've had this in my TBR pile for a while. A pile that is in need of being sorted. Thank goodness I was looking for Books by VICTORIA SUE in my Kindle Library. This is such a different type of Shifter pack life. This includes Shifters who can't shift but can have babies. This is the first Book in this series and thankfully I have them all. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS BOOK!!!!!!!!!!
