Caleb receives a letter from a stranger. Andrew Langhorne Jefferson, lawyer turned mountain man, is interested in preserving mountain man culture in the fact of the increased settlement of the west and the encroachment of technological progress. Jefferson calls a rendezvous and invites Caleb to come. Skeptical of Jefferson’s motives, Caleb nevertheless bundles up his household and he and his wife, Flora, accompanied by Snuffy, the brown bear they adopted as a cub, and they make the trek to Aspen Valley, the site of the rendezvous.
What Caleb fears will be a boring, noneventful trip turns to madness when a disagreement over a woman ends up with one of the rivals murdered in his tent. The killing threatens to disrupt the rendezvous, so Jefferson urges Caleb to intervene and find the killer, a complicated mission in a gathering of rugged individualists who pride themselves on not bowing to outside authority.

Rendezvou
Caleb and his wife decide to attend their first rendezvous with the whole family. While there a murder happens and Caleb is appointed to find and capture the murderer. He finds him but the man makes a break for freedom. It is Calebs family in an unusual way. That does the capturing A good and entertaining tale.

Love as I want
I always enjoy stories about Caleb and his Indian wife. Lives the life he loves and doesn't bother those who don't bother them. Dog and Sniffy are great addition to the story
