A Duke Worth Falling For

Rate this book
Alternate cover edition can be found here

Her career in tatters, celebrity photographer Lilah Rose needs somewhere to regroup and start fresh, outside of the spotlight. There’s nowhere better to hide than the English countryside, complete with fluffy sheep, rolling hills…and Max, the stern, sexy farmer who tends to them.

But the lazy days and lush nights with Max aren't as far from the spotlight as Lilah thinks. He isn’t simply a farmer—he’s also a duke: young, handsome and powerful…and too aware of how a title can dazzle, making the man inside invisible. What’s the harm in playing the farmer for a while? After all, Lilah isn’t staying…

Soon, Max is imagining just that, though--wondering what it would be like to have her on his land, in his life, in his bed forever. For that, he’s going to need to tell her the truth…and hope he can convince her that he’s a duke worth falling for.

I expected more from Sarah MacLean, she definitely didn't win me over in contemporary romance.
Lilah rents the guest house on the estate of Max the Duke.
Tired of seeing him just as a duke and for money, Max doesn't reveal who he is.
So many clichés that I don't even know what to say…
At least it's a small book.

This is an entertaining, well-written, steamy, contemporary romance novella. The characters are well-developed and likable, the female protagonist is strong and capable, the male protagonist is endearing, the romance is heartwarming, and the ending is perfect. I enjoy Ms. MacLean's outstanding historical romances, and hope that she will continue to write contemporary romance novels as well.

This is Sarah MacLean's only current contemporary romance (I think), and I really liked it. American style photographer + English duke. Very well developed for a novella, and this made me even more excited for the contemporary novel she has coming out next year.

I'm inducting a new novella to my annual re-reads list. A Duke Worth Falling For is an exquisitely wrought Fall/Autumn novella that captures the crisp air of the season along with the "we should enjoy every second of this time because soon it will be over" nature that imbues Octobers (at least for me). So achingly romantic, as photographer Lilah Rose stumbled over a sheep into the path of supposed English farmer Max who is actually the reclusive Duke Rupert Maximillian etc.

Max in his knits, his boots, collecting fresh eggs and cheese for your breakfast after serving you up a platter of decadent orgasms, damn, what's not to love. Also the scene where Max serves Lilah some loving at the art opening, worshipping her bare breasts under her tuxedo jacket, DAYUM.

A perfectly paced novella, and I adore it so much.

4.5 hearts

A Duke Worth Falling For is the first Sarah MacLean story I’ve read that wasn’t a historical romance and it looks like it is her first toe dip in the contemporary romance pool.  If this was to test out if her readership will follow her into present day, I think the results will be great.  Her first novella in this genre was relatable with nice grown-up characters, a great Ducal Manor holiday feel and a story of a comeback.

Lilah is a photographer rebuilding her life after getting blacklisted.  Max is Rupert Maximillian Arden, Fourteenth Duke of Weston, Earl Salterton, he is also a man who has never really known if a woman wants him for his title and money or just him.  When he meets Lilah during a photoshoot of some reluctant sheep, he neglects to mention he is the duke and she assumes he is just a farmhand for the estate.  They embark on a no strings affair as Lilah is going back to her life in just nine days.

While they fell in love a bit fast, I think being more vulnerable to another person because this is supposed to just be a vacation fling is part of the reason why.  You can also tell that both Lilah and Max don’t let many people see the real them and so that is intoxicating to just be who you are without assumptions due to your title or past.

Lilah is very likeable.  She is resilient and is at the end of her journey to create a new career in photography because it is what she loves and can’t imagine doing anything else.  Max isn’t really an alpha male but he is a strong man with a lot of responsibility on his shoulders. He can’t believe the feelings he has come by for this woman and has a bit of baggage to deal with from his first marriage.  Still together they are fireworks and so strong.  Plus Lilah’s revenge against the person who blacklisted her was worth the wait.

Totally a cute novella with a good number of sexy times in it. I do hope that Sarah Maclean has more contemporary stories in her head to give us in the future.

Narration:
Penelope Ann Rose's voice has an exceptional sultry quality that made parts of this story really hot.  I enjoyed how she played both Lilah and Max and was able to really bring out their strengths and vulnerabilities to make them very three dimensional characters in a short time.

I thought to try this CR novella by this author because her language sometimes can be a bit too modern in her HR novels. It is okay. Likeable main characters. Just not meaty enough for me, but that is my usual attitude towards novellas. The romance developed at a phenomenal rate but again, that's my usual problem with novellas. There's no time for slow-burn within 150 pages. Not the author's fault. She tried.

Sarah CAN write contemporary romance. I’m getting La Nora vibes with the strong yet vulnerable heroine in Lilah Rose and the brooding reluctant duke in Max, and the #metoo victory. I wish she’d write more contemporary. Simon’s story next, please?

“Mmm.” That sound again. Pleasure. Hunger. And then he took the tip of her breast into his mouth, working her gently until she sighed and her fingers came to his head, holding him there even as she wanted to beg him to move, to do more.
    “God, Max, yes.”
Another low growl and he released her. “Do you like that?”
“I can’t remember,” she replied. “Do it again.”

I have no idea how I stumbled across this novella, but the blurb immediately caught my attention. I mean... fluffy sheep and a modern day duke? Count me in!

Although it's only a 150 page novella, the very likeable main characters and the story are relatively well developed. Sure, everything happens at breakneck speed, but it's believable. Two adults meet, are attracted to each other, and spend the night together without revealing who they are. The sex is great and they decide to have an affair while Lilah is in town for the next nine days. Max still doesn't reveal that he's the Duke and not a farmhand, but that's fine and not just for drama because his reasons are valid and the affair is supposed to be temporary anyway. Neither of them is prepared to fall deeply in love, and when they do, the lie hangs over them like the sword of Damocles.

Of course, the sword falls for a brief third-act drama, but the breakup is worth it when the Duke steps to Lilah's side and unleashes his power on the man who is trying to destroy her.
It's a grand entrance, and how Lilah still tries to resist him after that is beyond me. (I blame her shock.)

There are a few inconsistencies and you shouldn't think too much about some details, but overall it was a very enjoyable book. I will take a closer look at MacLean's upcoming first full-length contemporary romance novel and a second look at the historical Bareknuckle Bastards series. I have stopped reading her historical romances after the Scandal & Scoundrel series – if I remember correctly, mainly because I couldn't stand her writing style anymore. It didn't bother me here, so after this novella I'm open to giving the Bareknuckle Bastards a shot after all.

not one of my favorites. I absolutely loved her contemporary that just came out. It was a wild ride. All about the storms. This one was more about sex if I'm being honest. these two meat and have a wild week of sex and fall in love. I wish it would have been more fleshed out.

Few authors do the kind of work in entire novels that Sarah Mac manages to do in this novella, which is everything wholesome and satisfying. With her first foray into contemporary, the author reminds me of a classic Nora Roberts novel, with a unique Sarah twist. A strong successful heroine, and the hero who worships her even while he deceives her just a little. Because oh yeah, he’s an honest to god, modern day Duke. Swoons. Lilah and Max’s story is sweet and sexy and a little bit heartbreaky and very current, even with its Duke and follies and sheep and the idyllic English countryside.

This was such a perfect novella! Sarah MacLean’s first (hopefully not only 😉) contemporary romance and I loved every page. The heroine, Lilah, is an American photographer who has been traveling the world as she hides out after the crash of her career of photographing celebs, world leaders, and influential people. While staying in the English countryside and photographing sheep, Lilah meets Max, who she assumes is a local farmhand on the estate but is actually a Duke in hiding. Their chemistry, her art, the countryside, the steam, the sheep...loved so much about this read!

I thought this was going to be a quick read, but my mood got in the way and I read it over a couple of days. Not sure if this is signature MacLean, but she delivers on the feels, wholesome story, story arc.
It was enjoyable but didn't have my heart pounding, which is the reason for a lower rating.

A Duke Worth Falling For was originally published in the Naughty Brits anthology. I am not sure how I picked this up for my Kindle, but was looking for a quick read when I came across it in my library. This is a modern tale featuring a modern day Duke.

After her professional celebrity photographer career was shattered, Lilah Rose has reinvented herself and is spending two weeks enjoying the English countryside. An acquaintance set her up in the groundskeeper cottage on castle grounds. She is trying to capture the perfect shot of a sheep when Duke stumbles across her. The meet cute was delightful as she mistake him for a simple sheep herder/farmer hand and he thinks she is paparazzi trying to get a photo of the reclusive Duke. The Duke allows this and gives her his middle name, Max.

The two later meet up at the local pub and the regulars there had me laughing. The chemistry between Max and Lilah is sizzling. One night soon turns into a nine-day romance.

The Duke has some hangups regarding his first wife and city life. Lilah doesn’t like men in power….but Max and Lilah are magic. I enjoyed their hot, sexy, sweet affair and crossed my fingers for some kind of happily ever after. While I understood her hangups, the Duke’s wasn’t as solid as I would have liked, especially when we meet his ex-wife. However, we see growth as MacLean brings things together.

Even though this is a novella the story didn’t feel rushed and we were even treated with an epilogue that left me swooning. This review was originally posted at Caffeinated Reviewer

2.5 stars. This was just ok. IMO, for a novella, this had too much sex. It made the story itself feel really shallow. The love was super instant - they were basically in each other's company for a few days and were "in love" after that short time. They jumped into bed right away, and I didn't really feel any connection beyond the sexual attraction.

Personally, this author has never been a favorite of mine in the HR category b/c of how unsafe so many of her books are. There's nothing more repulsive to me than a rake in the time before condoms, and Ms. MacLean seems to be a fan of them. I figured I would try this book since its set in modern times, but I think this author's work might just not be for me.

Safe; no virgins, hero is divorced, we do meet his ex but no drama from her, no OM drama either, no scenes with om/ow, no cheating.

Um livro pequeno demais ! 160 páginas passaram num ápice e a história até tinha tudo para render mais. Assim foi tudo apressado é fácil demais. Este duque tinha tudo para render umas 350 páginas 🙃

LOVED IT! What a fun and steamy contemporary romance. This is my first Sarah MacLean and I can't wait to read more. The writing was fantastic. It's kinda like a very spicy Hallmark movie -- and I mean that in the best possible way.

Our FMC is hiding from the world for reasons, the MMC, a Duke, is also hiding from the world... and when they run into each other and she doesn't know he's a fancy duke... well, he likes that he can just be himself. Sexy shenanigans ensue.

The only thing I wish was that it was a full novel so I could have spent even more time with these two in this world.

One quick thing -- this cover does not at all look like the Duke as described in the book. He has wheat colored hair, and whiskey eyes... and he's all big and burly... Just saying. Who picks these covers?

QUICK OVERVIEW:
Good story/plot: 👍
Good Pace: 👍
POV: 3rd person

Good FMC: 👍 She's fun and spirited, smart and sexy.
Good MMC: 👍 He's sexy and charming, and knows how to worship a lady.
Good side characters: 👍 Yes!

🌶️ Spicy Level: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️ (4/5) I'm going with 4 because it's descriptive (in the best way)
🔥How much spice: 🔥🔥🔥🔥 (4/5) I'm going with 4 because there was a lot of spice, mostly because it was a novella.

🎧Audiobook Narrator: Penelope Ann Rose did an amazing job!

Adorei, adorei, adorei 😍

Mostly loved it. The first 50ish pages were nearly perfect.

The good stuff:
- The banter is spot on
- It’s light without being too cozy, which is what I tend to like.
- Short and sweet
- Clever
- Has the secret identity trope, which is a favorite

The not so good stuff:
- Some bits were a little awkward. Like the author was trying to be super old school romantic, and the moments didn’t feel like they needed it.
- The sexy stuff in particular was a bit over the top for my tastes, but not terrible.
- I don’t like when men in romance novels call women “good girl”. Not in any context. All I hear is him calling her either a dog or a child.
- I don’t like when anyone refers to oral in the same way you would eating food.
- Basically I don’t like the dirty talk here.
- Might lean too much toward erotica for my liking.
- Things move waaaaaay too quickly after about the halfway point.
- I almost never want an epilogue. This is no exception.

I actually read this in the collection Naughty Brits: An Anthology. Wasn’t sure if I’d ever read the other stories in the collection, so I’m reviewing this novella alone.

ENG:
MacLen has proved that she can do contemporary just as well as historical romance!
The best thing in this novella is the chemistry between the characters. And I just loved 95% of their dialogues! Some of them might have been a bit off. But the rest were *chef kiss* (specially the sex scenes).
I also liked how we had enough time to get to know the characters and see them grow, even if it was short.
Also loved the pep talk Max's friend gives him. It was so down-to-Earth, realistic and nice!

Narrator: Penelope Ann Rose. She brings Lilah and Max to life!

Big Secret looming

I’m kind of torn on this one. I really wished I had bought the original anthology when it was available, which is totally my fault. But I impulse bought this one and here we are. It’s a sexy and engaging story, but I was frustrated the secret lasted so long and then I found myself annoyed at rich people, so. That’s how that turned out.

This little novella was perfect for a first foray back into contemporary romances after a long era of reading historical romances. Still had a duke but none of the “feisty but virginal maiden” stuff. I enjoyed this quite a bit. I’m still hesitant about really getting into contemporaries but if Sarah MacLean has more of these, I will absolutely give them a try.

Cute novella. Modern English Duke fairytale.

A bit obvious on how all of this was going to unfold and of course there was the reveal that was mistimed and therefore a hurdle for them to get over but I liked both characters and the setting was idyllic. I want to go live there now.
