About the author

Premendra Mitra (Bangla: প্রেমেন্দ্র মিত্র) was a renowned Bengali poet, novelist, short story writer and film director. He was also an author of Bengali science fiction and thrillers.

His short stories were well-structured and innovative, and encompassed the diverse to the divergent in urban Indian society. The themes of poverty, degradation, caste, the intermittent conflict between religion and rationality and themes of the rural-urban divide are a thematically occurring refrain in much of his work. He experimented with the stylistic nuances of Bengali prose and tried to offer alternative linguistic parameters to the high-class elite prosaic Bengali language. It was basically an effort to make the Bengali literature free from softness, excessive romance and use of old style of writing which were prevalent in older writings.

বাংলা সাহিত্যের শ্রেষ্ঠ গল্পের তালিকায় থাকবে এই ছোটগল্পটি। ভবিষ্যৎ কালের ক্রিয়া ব্যবহার করে এমন বিষাদ-অদ্ভুত বর্ণনা– অসাধারণ।

গল্পকার কলকাতাবাসী.. একদিন দু বন্ধুকে নিয়ে র‌ওনা দিলেন তেলেনাপোতা আবিষ্কারে। শখের বশে মাছ-শিকারী গল্পকার এসে পৌঁছালেন এক ধ্বংসস্তূপের মতো বাড়িতে। বাড়িটির প্রতিটি ইট-কাঠ‌ই যেন প্রাচীন রহস্যময় কোনোকিছুর ইঙ্গিত দেয়। রহস্য আরো ঘনীভূত হয় যখন যামিনী নামের বিষণ্ণ-চোখের এক মেয়ের সাথে তার পরিচয় ঘটে। যামিনী এবং তার মা এই নির্জন, জনমনুষ্যহীন প্রেতপুরীতে এখনও ধুঁকে ধুঁকে বেঁচে আছে কোনো এক অলীক আশায়। ঘটনাক্রমে গল্পকার তার সেই আশাপূরণের এক ক্ষণস্থায়ী প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়ে ফের কলকাতার পথে র‌ওনা হন। গল্পটি এমনিতেই ছোট, তাই শেষটা আর বলব না। তবে মাথা গুলিয়ে দেবে নিশ্চিত।

শুধু বাংলা ভাষার নয়, বিশ্বসাহিত্যের সম্পদ এই গল্পটি। এটিকে নিয়ে কিছু লেখা বৃথা। বরং গল্পটা আর একবার পড়ুন।
আর মুগ্ধ হোন।

৫ মিনিটে পড়ে ফেলবার জন্য চমৎকার উপভোগ্য একটি গল্প। তবে বিরক্ত হয়েছি এন্ডিং টার জন্য। 'কথা দিয়ে কথা না রাখা' টাইপ ব্যাপারগুলো আমার মেজাজ খারাপ করে দেয়।

এই গল্পটি, নিঃসন্দেহে বাংলা সাহিত্যের অন্যতম শ্রেষ্ঠ ও গুরুত্বপূর্ণ ছোটগল্প। এর মূল আকর্ষণটা আসলে গল্পের ফর্মের মধ্যেই আছে।

ঘনাদার সব লেখাগুলো নিয়ে আমার বাল্যকাল আনন্দে ভরপুর করা প্রেমেন্দ্র মিত্র যে কী প্রতিভার অধিকারী ছিলেন তা এই একটি লেখা পড়েই অনুধাবন করা যায়।

পড়লাম। ভবিষ্যৎ কাল ক্রিয়া ব্যবহার করে যে পুরো একটা গল্প লেখা যায় তাও জানলাম।

ছেলেবেলায় প্রেমেন্দ্র মিত্র রচিত রূপকথার গল্পগুলো পড়তে বেশ লাগত... আর আজ এই বড়বেলায় এসে তার লেখা এই অসাধারণ গল্পটি পড়ে সেই পুরনো দিনগুলোর প্রতি নস্টালজিক অনুভবেরা জাঁকিয়ে বসলো! চটুলতাবিহীন, নির্মেদ হাস্যরসসম্পন্ন গল্পটা পড়তে ১০-১৫ মিনিটের বেশি হয়ত লাগবে না আপনার, কিন্তু পড়া শেষ করার পর এক অতুলনীয় ভাললাগার রেশ আপনাকে আচ্ছন্ন করে রাখতেই বাধ্য। 🤍

It is common to call a thing dreamlike when it is generically surreal, but this story I think truly qualifies. The second person address, the determined drift from the mundane to the fabulous and back, the introduction of characters without introduction at all – an unheralded “she was” and there she is. Dreams have that curious mix of strangeness and familiarity. Where else do they pull from than within? How close dreams are to narrative voice: inventing before our very eyes, as this one does, seemingly both read and written at once.

পেমেন্দ্র মিত্রের কোনো বই এর আগে পড়িনি। এই ছোট গল্পটি হঠাৎ ইউটিউবে সাজেশনে আসে। কি ভেবে যেনো গল্পটির অডিওবুক শোনা শুরু করলাম। বেশি বড় নয়, মাত্র ৪০ মিনিটের অডিওবুক ছিলো। একটানা শুনে শেষ করলাম। গল্পটি বেশ দারুণ। আমার কাছে ভালো লেগেছে যামিনীকে। কি সুন্দর একটি চরিত্র!! পেমেন্দ্র মিত্রের আরো বই পড়তে আগ্রহ তৈরি হইলো।

আমার সাহিত্য পড়ার চৌহদ্দি বড় বেশি নয়, কিন্তু সেই সীমিত গন্ডি থেকে আমার মনে হয়না বিশ্বসাহিত্যে তেলেনাপোতা আবিষ্কারের থেকে ভালো ছোট গল্প খুব বেশি লেখা হয়েছে।
