What if the reflection staring back at you had become a stranger? Inside, I was dying—empty, dark, alone.
Keeping it all together was exhausting and the ‘perfect’ mask I wore was beginning to slip. Pretending to have it all together wasn’t working anymore as the lies I had to tell weighed heavier each day. I’d done everything right my whole life and I still ended up divorced, childless, and alone. All I had left was my job.
Maybe it was time to be a little bad?
Seductive choices pulled me over into darkness and I no longer had to pretend. The escape was addictive as recklessness marred my skin and desperate decisions led me into the arms of unknown danger. The hardest part was knowing whether they would save me, or destroy me. Because their destruction was beginning to taste like salvation and I didn’t know if I could walk away.
After all, the sweetest lie was the one you told yourself, especially when the truth was the most dangerous confession of all.

5 stars THIS WAS SUCH A CAPTIVATING STORY I DEVOURED this book, completely and utterly enraptured with it. Contemporary RH is one of my favourite genres, so it was good to see characters that are older and more mature than the norm. I applaud Kris Butler for tackling issues like mental health in Dangerous Truths Loren was a spectacular FMC. The struggles she faced and her constant fight with her depression made me raw. She has got to be one of my favourite FMC. I loved that with each guy she was able to showcase a different part of herself. Fostering Jude was so wholesome... I can't wait to see how they develop and grow as individuals. The men in this book were all complex and varied in personalities. Each of them faced demons unlike one another, and it made me fall even more in love with this book. Sax is probably my favourite out of the group though :) Those last two chapters though.... I CAN NOT WAIT FOR BOOK 2!!!!
Ok… whew. I feel like I just got done with a marathon. So pretty big book. Like 500 pages. Mafia RH. Medium-high ish burn. So our FMC Loren is a therapist who is depressed due to certain life events that occurred (check TW if you need them). The way Loren is portrayed perfectly exemplifies depression. She struggles to get up in the morning, doesn’t want to shower, feels empty, and sometimes does reckless things just to feel *something*. I thought she portrayed depression very realistically. She has ups and downs. While Loren is going through life, she meets five different men she’s drawn to. The men don’t all come from the same parts of her life. She is dating and having escapades but so far no harem is officially formed. But also no cheating. There’s lots of really mature, respectful communication in this and it’s very interesting. It did get slow at times, which is the reason for my 4 star rating. Ends on a cliffhanger. It has a lot of promise so I’ll see this one through. Also most of them are 30+, FMC is 32 I think. Very refreshing. The kids in this are also so sweet.
The love interests:
Nicco: sooo lovely. Youngest love interest. Tattooed, tattoo artist, in the mafia family. So romantic
Wells: her kickboxing instructor. Also does underground mma fights. Definite enemies to lovers (potential) going on there
Monroe: her neighbor, he is a dilf for sure
Sax: my brash and sexy bodyguard. Mafia
Atticus: mafia head, claims he doesn’t want her but he does
This was startlingly good for a romance. There is so much plot. I’m hooked. I need to know what happens. I was a little tentative when I began the journey that is this book because of the foreword. I was certain that this book was going to emotionally devastate me. It didn’t. I was okay but I do want to say that angst is my comfort zone. I do well with emotional complexities. I lean towards them, embrace them, and take comfort in them. This book had emotional complexity in spades. For me, I very much enjoyed it but people should know that the book is devastating in several ways. It also ends with a cliffhanger.
In short (very short), the book is about a woman, Loren, “waking up” after being in a depressive slump for a year or so after a divorce. She slowly meets several men - Nicco, Monroe, Atticus, Sax, and Wells - and all of their lives become intertwined. There are a LOT of characters in the book and there is world building, even if the world is the regular world we live in.
Despite all the characters, the pacing of the book was solid. I didn’t feel the book dragging at any point and, likewise, I didn’t feel the book was rushed. I genuinely feel like I know the characters and what motivates them. Some things that can really put me off from darker romances are hotness passes, when a character does something horrible but another character forgives or moves past it because of how distractingly attractive they are. There aren’t more than two all out sex scenes but it somehow still felt like a sexy book.
I intend to continue with the series. I just haven’t felt this invested in characters in a hot minute. The size of the book intimidated me. I was worried that a romance would struggle to be interesting for that long. Thanks to the engaging plot and storyline development, the book used every page and left me salivating for more.
I don’t even know where to begin!!! I love me a good dark mafia romance so when I found out one of my favorite authors what starting a new series I could t wait to get me greedy little hands on it. Let me tell you she did not disappoint quite the opposite actually! Blew my damn mind!!! This author seriously has a way with words and the characters she creates while complex are so relatable. Loren is something else and deals with real life issue after her would falls apart like depression, something many people suffer from and like many people Loren has perfected the art of hiding it and putting on great front that is until she meets Monroe, Sax, Wells, Atticus and Nicco.. I am LOVING the relationship building that is happening and how each man has a special connection to our girl. Let me tell you the sexual tension between Loren and some of the guys will leave you panting!!! And the spice is oh so yummy!! This book does end on a cliffy that had me like OH SH*T and I am dying to get my hands on book 2 especially to see where these relationships are headed!!
Wow! This book was amazing. I loved the character development; they are so deep and yet there is so much more to learn. It portrays trauma and depression in a real way. This was definitely an emotional read, but worth it. You get sucked into the plot, I did not want to put it down. The cliffhanger, as frustrating as they can be, will definitely leave you wanting more. I highly recommend this book, I can not wait to see how the relationships develop. I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Dangerous Truths by Kris Butler is a dark contemporary mafia romance. This is the first book in the Dark Confessions series.
The book does come with an authors note "This story deals with depression and other themes that may be triggering. Please read the forward at the beginning of the book for more details. This is an adult romance and intended for readers 18+ due to language and content."
I absolutely love Kris's books! She does an amazing job pulling you into the story and making you feel every emotions the characters are feeling. I couldn't put the book down. Definitely one of my top reads for 2021.
I am loving that relationships that Loren is slowly building between Monroe, Atticus, Sax, Wells, and Nicco. I really enjoyed getting all of their points of view throughout the book. It really brought the story to life.
The book ends on a cliffhanger but that wasn't a surprise since its the first book in the series and the author did advise in the foreword section of the book. I can't wait for the next book in the series Dangerous Lies to be released on December 4, 2021 so I can get more of Loren and her men.
I would highly recommend this book if you like dark romances, contemporary romance, reverse harem romances, or mafia romances.
I already miss them all!! What I love about Kris Butler’s books is her character development and storytelling. The layers and depth are always so raw and real. If you’re looking for insta, this isn’t it. This is real, raw and mature. She definitely stands out as a writer and this series is no exception. I’m so invested and I can’t wait for book 2. Highly recommend! It is somewhat of a slow/med burn so just stay the course and enjoy every second because it’s so worth it. Highly recommend her other series as well. Big Kris Butler fan over here!
Dangerous Truths is a dark contemporary RH mafia romance. It’s the first book in Kris Butler’s Dark Confessions series.
Dangerous Truths is a captivating read. This book draws you in from the beginning. Loren is a fantastic character and seeing her struggle to overcome past abuse, made her more real and relatable. Meeting the guys, one on one, has her coming into her own. I love the dynamics of it all. I love the multiple POVs and the inside look into their characters.
I’m looking forward to the next book and more into Loren and her guys.
Amazing!!!! This book is take your breath away fantastic...so much going on and I wanted-no NEEDED-to know it all!!! Every single character was someone I was invested in and I found myself reading compulsively as their stories entranced me. This book definitely leaves you wanting more....ummm that cliffhanger everyone...cannot wait for the next book!!!!!
Dangerous Truths by Kris Butler is the first book in the Dangerous Confessions books and it's in multiple point of views. This book definitely broke me; but in the best way possible. This is a reverse harem book, and I like how it is built along the way instead of made from the start. Loren is such a relatable female main character. She is curvy, strong, honest, real, and raw in the best ways. In fact, all the characters in this book are realistic, raw, and damaged in one way or another. This book portrays trauma and depression in such a real way. It shows it's okay to get help when you need it, and not to fake it when you're hurting. It does end on a cliffhanger that will make you want to throw your phone across the room, and I can't wait for book two.
I needed time to digest this book in order to write a quality review. I cannot put into words how much I LOVED this book. Easily my favourite read and I found myself really grasping onto every sentence. Kris Butlers writing style is sophisticated and superb. It was my first book by the author and I now have the rest of her books on my TBR.
Loren is the FMC and I loved everything about her. She’s in her 30’s, which I really loved (can you tell how much I LOVE this book. I am overusing the word and I’m not even apologizing for it).
She has FIVE love interests. FIVE!!!! And I found myself connecting with every single one of them.
Thank you SO much for the ARC copy of this book. I will be recommending this book to everyone I know. ❤️
Loren won my heart from the start. She is relatable and I found pieces of myself in her, and her longing for more at every page. She is a trauma therapist and sees so much in others, and feels so much for others, and yet she is her own toughest patient. I love seeing her transformation and that she tries to not hide within herself, she tries to come out more and more. She is beautiful, sexy, daring, and with her harem she is all that and fun! It’s a slow build harem, but I didn’t mind at all. Her world is building and so is their intimate connection and the mafia world that’s exploding around her. Her vulnerability and answering mouth, her good heart to help others, and that she is seeing things more clearly after her terrible ex, is truly admirable.
I am so excited for more. I loved KB’s The Council Series, and this one just stands out a bit more to me. Falling for Loren first, made me root for her. The vibe of the book is right there for me, bordering darker territory, the world building is adding to my excitement for the next book. Loren’s pain, strength, and beauty is in all of us. She felt so personal.
Mafia RH DR
***** The Harem Atticus , well first he is MINE. Now that’s out of the way! His sister is a patient of Loren’s that’s all I am saying. He is an enigma in a suit. And when he breaks I want every explicit detail. He also has a sex club!
Sax, is a bear of a man, has no filter with his dirty mouth and 2nd in command.
Nicco, is all woo, but I think he would definitely knife someone.
Monroe, kind and confident. Upfront and underrated !
Wells, a grump, a fighter, but I swear his sadness recognizes her’s.
Dangerous Truths is a book written by Kris Butler and is a Revised Harem Dark Maffia Romance, it deals with subjects such as depression and can be experienced as a trigger.
I have just one word for this book! AMAZING! I love Loren, in some ways i can relate to her so much, she's such a strong, passionate character. My favourite characters in this story are of course Loren, but also Jude and Immygon, I love how all of the characters fit like a puzzle in the story, they all have their own problems and ideas of life and that makes it such an interesting story! I didn't mind the slow burn at all, i even liked it, I don't like it when characters just constantly jump around from the beginning, this was really a great read. But the ending ..... It broke me emotionally, as the author had predicted.
All around a 5/5 star read, i definitely highly recommend this book, can't wait to read the next one!!
5+Stars A Truly Compelling Dark Romance Kris Butler has woven a wonderful tapestry of beautifully broken people who’s lives end up intersecting in unexpected ways thanks to Loren, the FMC. This book had all the things including: •Relatable, broken but amazingly wonderful FMC •The deeply wounded, tortured surly fighter •The surprisingly romantic and insightful bad boy •The boy next door type with the heart of gold •The fierce protector with oh so sexy, dirty mouth •The self sacrificing mafia boss that shoulders all the blame And they are all hot AF and ready to lay it all on the line. Legit gasped so loud at the end that I almost woke up my daughter. I couldn’t put this book down. My God woman! All of these characters… I just have no words. And that ending 😱🤯. I did not see that coming at all….and now I’m terrified. Book 2 can’t come soon enough!!! Please read trigger warnings
Have you ever read a book where you can relate to the FMC in so many ways? I personally have been diagnosed with depression, PTSD and also happen to have a degree in Psychology. It was so easy to put myself in Loren's shoes as to her inner turmoil. Her character is so well written that I was able to feel what she felt and completely understand her.
This book takes you on one hell of a ride through life after losing what you thought was forever but ended up being a nightmare. In the end Loren comes out stronger than she thought she could be.
The guys' themselves are so different but they each offer something to Loren that she never knew she needed. They are also battling their own problems trying to figure out how to get to where they want to be.
I absolutely can't wait for book 2, Dangerous Lies. I know its going to be explosive!
This book made me feel like having a puzzle and watching all the pieces that made no sense come together... for it to only be knocked off the table!!! Seeing Loren learn that given her job doesn't mean she can use those tools for herself. Then add in these guys that slowly bring her out of her shell and she finds her self-confidence and self worth. For Jude to come along and he needs her just as much as she needs him. Then things as in slow motion begin to crash and crumble. She still has Jude as her rock and she is his.
Kris Butler. . just when I thought your writing couldn't get better bam you hit me in the face with Dangerous Truths. You had me captivated from the first page to the last and left me craving more. I absolutely loved Loren, Nicco , Sax ,Wells, Atticus and Monroe . Loren is a trauma counselor who has gone thru trauma and deceit within her own life. Chance encounters with each of the men leads her to gain amore control and power of her life as well as finding herself again. Each man struggles with his own issues both within himself and with his family. Such amazing steamy scenes are found in this book as well . A definite must read . Amazing job .Now I need some emotional counseling .
I was really excited for this book after reading the blurb and it far surpassed my expectations. I could not put this book down it is PHE! NOM! IN! AL! I like the focus that this book places on mental health and recovery from trauma. Going through the recovery process with Loren on her journey to overcome her depression and self doubt really sucked me in to the book and made her a more relatable FMC. I really can't wait to see how all of these relationships pan out and how things work out with Loren and Jude.
OMG this book just had me right away! You get sucked in and it won't let go. I love how this sucks you in to the mafia world. I can feel for Loren and hoe her confidence is so low and how each of the guys help her and make her bloom to her fullest. The pieces are on the board with this book and just when you think you know what is going to happen you're wrong. I truly enjoyed this darker romance as it made my heart go putter patter. Keep up the good work Kris!
Dangerous Truths, the initial installment in Kris Butler's Dark Confessions collection, takes you on a journey through the darker side of life. Deeply depressed, Loren is faced with a multitude of situations that force her to out of her comfort zone. Coupled with her "awakening" she also comes face to face with the darker side of her personality. Dangerous Truths examines socialital norms, personal boundaries and the lengths we will go to protect ourselves and those we care about. It is a raw and unfiltered novel, bringing to light many of the issues others keep hidden. If you can stand the heat, it is definitely worth reading!
This book was amazing and that ending destroyed my will to live! That cliffhanger was absolute perfection for the next lead up for book 2. Kris, this was amazing! You are so talented 💜 DT is in my top 5 favorite books for 2021.
Kris Butler weaves a compelling and thrilling tale that keeps you turning pages as fast as you can. Her characters are fascinating and the story is gripping and heart wrenching at the same time. I couldn't help but get completely caught up in it and hadn't realised I'd reached the end until I turned the page and there was no more. My phone very nearly got yeeted into the swimming pool in disappointment. I can not recommend this highly enough and I am eagerly awaiting the next book.
With Dangerous Truths, Kris Butler has brought us an incredible start to a new story that is full of real, intense emotion. These characters were very well written, complex individuals. I loved how realistic mental illness is portrayed throughout the story and not just glossed over. The steamy bits were quite hot and there was enough drama to move the story along at a good pace. The ending was on the mild side of things but no less attention grabbing. I need more!
Wow! This book was absolutely amazing! The characters are all suffering in their own ways, but are all connected together and are able to help each other heal a little. I loved how all the men were drawn to Loren and Immy. I was really drawn into the story from the first page and couldn’t put the book down. Dangerous Truths was a captivating story that has characters that are dealing with trauma and depression, mafia family business and sleazy ex’s. I highly recommend reading this book and can’t wait for the next.
Stunned in the best possible way! This book had me snared in the very first line! I felt Loren’s pain like it was my own. Every character was so well developed even the smaller ones on the side lines. This was a very emotional read but Lorens darkness called mine and i loved it! The representation of real feelings was beyond words. I am so attached to these characters and can not wait to see their story continue to unfold! So good!!
I’m truly wowed by how much I ended up feeling during the course of this book 🥺
Loren, our FMC, is a trauma therapist who wears a mask all day every day; letting people only see the happy and healthy woman when inside she’s a total mess. After a bad marriage, and a manipulative/abusive mother, Loren is broken in ways she knows as a therapist is bad, but she just doesn’t have the strength to overcome them. She felt so real to me it was like I knew her personally. I empathized with her internal struggles; how she belittled herself because that’s what she was always told, how she lacked self confidence because she was made to feel less than, and her need to always be polite and smile because it’s what was expected of her.
Her harem was a breath of fresh air! These aren’t men who came “pre-packaged” as a unit and she just seamlessly integrated herself in their world. These are 5 men who all have mild degrees of separation, but who naturally find their worlds intertwining around this woman. These men inspire her confidence, they show her how amazing she is, they shine light on her internal darkness, and they give her the strength to stand up for herself without any judgements.
There’s an Ice King who pushes her away, a broken soul who doesn’t believe he’s worthy of happiness, a brute who inspires her crazy side, a divorcée who understands her internal struggles, and a ray of sunshine who brings light to her world.
As many amazing things as they bring to her world, they also bring a chaos that she was not anticipating. Her world goes from humdrum depression Netflix binges, to illegal fight nights and danger.
I truly and completely cannot wait to see what happens next as this group navigate building their HEA.
Kris Butler has done it again!! She's created another fantastic set of characters that you can't help but get emotionally involved with. Loren is a great character and Kris has done tremendous job creating her. I can’t wait to read more of her story. This story is raw in that it covers some sensitive topics that some readers might find triggering but Kris writes these well. Most important though is there is one hell of a cliffhanger which may or may not make you throw your reading device.
Kris, just wow! Lorentz is one of the best fmc's I've read in forever. Her thoughts and feelings are so real. Her struggles to come back from who she was to who she is now. The connection between the men develops through the story and it's so interesting to read. Don't get me wrong, the spicy scenes are soooooo good but it's the plot that keeps you reading this book. Even the side characters have such presence. The ending ... oh my broken heart, the ending destroyed me in the most addicting way. I cannot wait for book 2! It's slow burn, there are dark themes around depression and miscarriage. The emotions are real, raw and just phenomenal
What can you say about a book that was so unbelievably enthralling, well, one thing comes to my mind....READ THIS BOOK!! It will not disappoint, Butler has does an unbelievable job with each character and their backgrounds, struggles, and journeys. It was pure bliss to each time I turned a page. I am utterly in love with this book, and I wish I could give it 10 stars. If you are looking for a RH, dark romance with some mafia thrown in then please grab this book. You'll be hooked from the first chapter .
