The pacing of this book was fast. Like real fast. But I guess that's just okay considering how short this book is.

“I’m scared of pain. Of loneliness, mediocrity…"

What I adored most is Hartley being a simp and just over all being smitten with Jaden. She was a typical teen-age girl no matter how she perceived herself. She was a regular girl, I loved that. She was so whipped throught the entire book, and she did a few small things that made me smile, so I'll give her that.

And that makes her legs weak, so she starts walking mainly to make sure they still work.

Jaden was also an interesting character, she's perceived as this good girl with a savior's comlex— she is and she does. But I'm amazed by how well in tune she is with Hartley. I found it cute :)

“Your mind seems like a very interesting place.”

It kinda irked me how much Jaden wanted to change Hartley, or fix her rather. Also, the fact that Hartley had to assume to guy role doesn't sit right with me. She's this rockstar, rebel who smokes joints and does coke, who stacks up on six packs and insists on paying for their dates.

For a moment she feels like she fixed Hartley, like they defeated the demons.

Anyway, I'm amazed that I find myself fairly attached to these girls emotionally. Thinking about it now, the reason might be because I may be half a bit of Jaden and half a bit of Hartley— personality wise.

“I don’t think there is noise inside your head. Maybe you just need to organize your thoughts.”

I get stuck in my head a lot but unlike Hartley, I enjoy and get along with the voices in my head.

Hartley really enjoys spending time inside her head, it’s her favorite place, like a vacation spot for when she is bored in class or life in general. There’s always something fun to ponder about in there, and if she is lucky a song will come out of it. If not, it will still be a fun ride and worth it all the same.

What boggles my mind is that VA Wonder could've made these characters 18 or even 17. A sixteen years old girl who knows how to throw back cocaine like it isn't a big deal, and basically ODs is terrifying to think about. Chapter 17 what club allows minors inside and get drunk off their asses?

Other than that, this book needs a little polishing around the edges, I found a few typographical errors. But for a debut book of an indie athor this was pretty good. Wonder was able to nail the chemistry— and thank god this didn't become a love triangle because that would've sucked—, the banter was nice. The ending felt a bit rushed, but it was a fairly short book so I can let that slide.

I appreciated the fact that these girls were very self aware. Love that for them. And... that's pretty much it.

Copy of the book was provided by the autnor in exchange for an honest review :)

This is a sweet/angsty YA debut novel.
Does it need a bit of polishing/editing? Maybe. Did I care? Not at all.
It's been a while since I read a teen romance, but the author does a terrific job telling this story, Hartley and Jaden are your classical high school opposites that lock eyes and the rest is history, but at the same time they're unique individuals with their own troubles and dreams entering a relationship for the first time. The chemistry is undeniable and their journey is full of ups and downs wich kept the story interesting.
I'm really glad to have found this gem of a book!

A brief description of this book could be YA lesfic about two girls in high school falling in love. But this book is really so much more.
I found myself unexpectedly moved by this story.
I think it’s b/c I could see some of my younger self in both Hartley and Jaden.
The author did a brilliant job bringing compassion to some tough issues.
Although deeper topics are explored, the romance and passion between Hartley and Jaden was always the dominant force.
This was a truly beautiful and touching coming of age story.

A moving story

Rebel teenager Hartley finds herself spiralling out of control with her drug problem and her emotional connection to Jaden, the perfect girl. With Hartley’s reputation and the Argentinian society view of two girls in love, Hartley and Jaden face many a challenge on their path to happiness.

This was a very simple, fast paced, romance with a lot of angst and drama. The story had a sweet premise of Hartley being deeply flawed in a way but head over heels in love with a girl she worries she can never have true happiness with because of external influences. I didn’t know what to expect from this story but I found myself moved by the demons and troubles Hartley faced.

Jaden faced her own struggles in loving Hartley too. When you have a character like Hartley who is battling so much, the effect on the other person can be devastating. Jaden epitomises that in this story and bears many a burden that she shares with Hartley in the hope they can find a way to have the life they want and support one another.

This is a busy story with a lot going on very quickly but I enjoyed the pace and the way the story was told leant well the neurotic experiences Hartley and Jaden were going through. I think it worked really well as a debut novel and is a story you will enjoy if drama and angst are what you are looking for.

“Hartley could’ve asked her to marry her right then and there. She was smitten, this was the kind of girl dreams are made of. But she didn’t. Because she doesn’t do that. Because she is Hartley, too cool for school, and for love, and for anything, really. She was also fairly convinced that Jaden thought of her as a knucklehead, a different type of shallow who instead of only caring about boys, only cares about getting wasting and partying. So, she would limit herself to watching from a distance, a physical and emotional one, while this perfect combination of sweet upper class catholic girl and committed, intelligent woman knocks her off her feet.”

I was contacted by the author directly about reading and reviewing their first book, and I felt (and still feel) so honoured to do so!

The pacing of the book was incredibly fast, at times it did feel a little bit rushed, but I can attribute that to the length of the book. Despite how fast the plot pacing moved, the character progression felt natural, as did the relationship between Jaden and Hartley.

Hartley was a very intriguing and likeable protagonist, which is the exact opposite of what I was expecting. I thought she was going to be the one I didn’t relate to, but her story was the most emotionally charged and gripping, at least for me.

I liked the girls’ relationship for the most part, aside from how much Jaden wanted to fix Hartley - but it was said in the synopsis that she has a bit of a saviour complex, which she does - and I think they were much better together, working through their respective issues with the love and support of the other, than they are without.

All in all, this was a solid book! There were a few errors typographically, and the comment in regards to autism in the early chapters of the book irked me, but for a first novel from an indie author, it was good and I very much enjoyed reading it. The chemistry was there; the plot was gripping; the characters were relatable and likeable. You can’t ask for much more in a book!

Thank you V.A. Wonder for the chance to read your book!

Potential

I felt like this book had potential. There were things I loved about the story and then there were things that made me go eh. I loved the idea of the plot and loved Hartley and Jaden. Hartley had issues and were always in her head and I thought that was relatable to some. I had an issue with the story jumping around and not staying in one setting for long enough. One moment they’re going away to the ranch, then they had already left and was back home, and then going to the beach. It just felt all over the place and was paced fast. There were grammatical errors in parts of the books. Overall, the book was okay and I did somewhat enjoy it.

I received a complimentary copy of the book from vivacious reads from the author

This is is a lovely short romance story.

I enjoyed the way that the author managed to bring the rebel and the good girl together, whilst showing all dangers that teens are exposed to.
