Every object has a ghost.
There is a small yellow backpack - half unzipped, mouth yawning to the pavement, contents strewn around it (a banana, an exercise book, a pair of scissors) - abandoned on a suburban footpath.
Ten feet away, the rubber stamp of tyres, resisting clamped brakes, mount the curb and cut across the path. The tracks come to an end at a crippled stop sign.
The street, a tree-lined suburban road dappled in late-afternoon sunlight, is calm. But anyone walking past can feel the ghosts: the prickle on the back of their necks that tells them something happened here. The story of a vehicle careening to a halt. Of a child’s backpack left in a hurry.
That intuition all comes before they take a closer look, and see there is dark, dry red on the scissor’s blade. The ghosts are screaming now; the scene’s memory turns violent. And as the passers-by raise their phones to answer the question what is your emergency? They see more red. Between the tyre-tracks and the blood. There are two words, hastily scrawled on the sidewalk. Written in blood.

Now this was something different. The twist was totally unexpected, and I loved it at the time. Afterwards however, I realize the motivation for the kidnapping wasn’t fully explained, so that’s why I give four stars instead of five. It was still brilliant for such a short suspense novel.

4.50 Stars (rnd ⬇️) — This is 4hrs of straightup porn- thriller!!! All the elements of suspense are covered and Benjamin does a stellar job building tension with a confronting & no holds-barred perspective that hits the “oh shit” button from page one!!!
Best enjoyed on a long and familiar drive, where you can pay attention without having to hold too much narrative notes at one time.
The author has outdone himself here in the evil stakes, creating genuine horror for the reader by ensuring they feel some empathy for these disgustingly awful protagonists!!!

A mom, a kidnapping, an FBI-agent, a history of catfishing, and of course...revenge! There's quite a bit of implausibility but still a fun ride. Audiobook was about 3 hours.

A brilliantly intense, dark, yet intriguing novella.
I was absolutely hooked and enjoyed the twists the entire way through this suspenseful story.
This book surprised me, as it was darker than the Ernest Cunningham series, although still a great twisty mystery!

Oh this is so good! So good! Either Side of Midnight was one of my favourite books last year and I had to get this Audible Original. I did love the nod to this book in Find Us too!

Wow, what a novella!
Even though I had the answer it was mind-blowing! A real freight train of disaster that had me listening to the entire book in one sitting.
If this book had been any longer I’d have had a stress attack - intense, intriguing and ultimately the perfect length.

I definitely wasn’t expecting what actually happened! My only complaint is I wish it had been longer. It seemed a bit rushed, which is usually try for most short stories.

This book was super disturbing, and I can’t say I really enjoyed it, but I’m impressed with the twists and so I upped my rating from 3 to 4 because I didn’t see them coming.

Wow…what a strange little story. Unexpected and even a tad jaw-dropping. Short but not under-developed. I am surprised that it didn’t have more narrators since this is an Audible Original…they usually have additional narrators for each point of view. But it wasn’t a deal-breaker by any means.

Listened to the audiobook in one trip back and forth between CT and ME. Yes, it had some big twists but they were telegraphed so obviously that when they happened I wasn’t really surprised. Also, our main character’s children, who are central to the story, are both obnoxious brats- especially the girl. I wasn’t invested at all. Thank goodness this book was a freebie with my Audible membership. I will not be looking up any more books by this author.

I'll be honest, until the last part this was a 2 stars for me. Then it went up to 4.4 and the ending took it down to 3 stars.
Two kids disappear and they turn out to be the kids of a former police/detective woman. She does everything in her power to find them although, of course, she is not part of the official investigation.
The story is told from the mom's perspective and the kidnapper's perspective.
Even though it's a short book, the first two thirds felt long and dragged and barely kept my interest. I enjoyed the twist in the end, very disturbing to be honest, but the actual ending was a let down for me.

A fantastic short story that had me absorbed, slightly disturbed, and a little terrified particularly because I am a mother myself. And the ending!!!!! Gripping but at the same time infuriating.
I read this short story in one sitting and couldn't get through the pages fast enough. I loved how it flicked between different POV - mother and kidnappers - allowing you to know things that some of the other characters weren't privy to. This was so well written and it gave heaps of clever clues along the way. Although the motive wasn't fully explained for both the kidnappers, I still throughly enjoyed it. However as a mum I am more than a little freaked out by it.

While the storyline had potential the whole book was meh. I like the idea of the main character but she as well as the others have no depth to them. If you need a book that’s just a filler for something to do, this one was okay. More along the lines of a cozy mystery, nothing fantastic. The author could have done so much more with this book. A really good author can use more descriptive words than explicit language. If you have to relay on those adjectives, adverbs and verbs, you really haven’t made it as an author.
The mom is a secret FBI agent, her kids get kidnapped and she goes vigilante. Throw in some unnecessary language and that’s about the extent of the book.

Not bad for something I got 'for free' on Audible.
Positives: I liked the narrator's voice and performance, manages to pack in quite a bit of narrative for a short listen, it was interesting enough that I finished it, it was bold enough to go with a realistically bleak ending
Negatives: I guessed the big twist less than halfway through which made it a lot less compelling, characters are not particularly well developed, some interesting themes are hinted at but not developed in the 4 hour window, I do not enjoy an 'evil child' trope (referencing Holly here)

This was not what I expected at all - in a good way. I didn’t see it coming. Although, not sure if I like the way it ended and the motive wasn’t ever fully explained. It was very short and I feel like it could have used some further fleshing out.
