Full disclosure: I read this book as part of a collaboration with Cheryl. The idea being that I, a deconstructionist Christian who wrote a fantasy book with the Church as a key antagonist, would read and review a Christian fantasy book written by a Minister. So here are my honest thoughts:

This book is written in 2 parts and I found myself absolutely engrossed in the first half. The writing style is excellent and Cheryl’s poignant portrayal of human suffering and the reasons why people leave, and come back to the Church, are sensitive and beautifully written. I found Part 2 a little harder to get immersed in. This is where the story takes a turn and the group of travellers from part 1, now join in with God for the fight against the devil. I think there was some biblical appreciation I was missing to fully enjoy this part of the story and overall I found it less compelling. However, on the whole that did not detract from my overall appreciation of Cheryl’s writing. I think other ex-Christian’s such as myself will find this book as equally fascinating as I did.
