Italian Fascism and Spanish Falangism in Comparison: Constructing the Nation

This book compares the Italian Fascist and the Spanish Falangist political cultures from the early 1930s to the early 1940s, using the idea of the nation as the focus of the comparison. It argues that the discourse on the nation represented a common denominator between these two manifestations of the fascist phenomenon in Mussolini’s Italy and Franco’s Spain. Exploring the similarities and differences between these two political cultures, this study investigates how Fascist and Falangist ideologues defined and developed their own idea of the nation over time to legitimise their power within their respective countries. It examines to what extent their concept of the nation influenced Italian and Spanish domestic and foreign policies. The book offers a four-level framework for understanding the evolution of the fascist idea of the the ideology of the nation, the imperial projects of Fascism and Falangism, race and the nation, and the place of these cultures in the new Nazi continental order. In doing so, it shows how these ideas of the nation had significant repercussions on fascist political practice.

El propósito de este año va a ser hacer más reseñas. Y, bueno, aquí estoy.

El libro de Priorelli me parece una buena introducción a las relaciones, similitudes y diferencias entre las visiones sobre la nación del falangismo y el fascismo italiano, tanto a nivel discursivo como en algunas de sus prácticas.

Las cuatro fases que propone del dinamismo de la nación fascista (1. su conceptualización negativa, la lucha contra lo(s) antinacional(es) y su materialización institucional y totalitaria; 2. Su transformación en nación imperial y colonial; 3. Su transformación en una nación étnica, racista y antisemita y 4. Su inclusión en el Nuevo Orden Europeo nazi) me parecen interesantes como herramientas analíticas, aunque creo que alguna fase, en especial la tercera, tiene ciertos problemas con los que no estoy de acuerdo.

Finalmente, lo considero un buen libro de síntesis y de historia comparada entre dos países fascistas mediterráneos y lo recomiendo por ello. De hecho, su estilo de escritura es muy fácil y cómodo de seguir. Pero no creo que aporte muchas cosas innovadoras desde el punto de vista académico.

A solid comparison of Fascism and Falangism, separated from the peculiarities of Nazism. More importantly, the author's theory on the four phases of of fascist thought and action provides a good rubric for examination of other authoritarian philosophies and regimes.
