Pinto is a middle level officer in the Internal Security Agency, or ISA who discovers, through a series of episodic experiences that the template for catching spies is not the gun toting flamboyance of James Bond. Nor, for that matter, is it the dull grey world of Smiley’s People. Much of it is patient pursuit and back end planning lit by the occasional flash of brilliance. Yet, even if there are no adrenaline spikes and meetings in the shadows of the gloaming; Pinto enjoys his job with the all the mental challenges and the perseverance it requires. Like in any other government department, Pinto too has to deal with failing room coolers, an aging car and the quirks of officialdom; but there is a professional core in the organization that, with good humour, sensitivity and patience, is able to carry the day. The book also has side stories that, though occasionally anecdotal, paint Pinto’s life in vibrant colours.
The Back Ender by Udayan Mukerji delivers on its promise to keep the readers hooked. The author himself had served in the Indian Police Service, and this shows up in this work. The attention to detail and behavioral patterns are on point. It makes the reader take the story seriously and goes a long way in making the characters relatable.
The story revolves around Pinto, a middle-level officer in the ISA (Internal Security Agency), and his pursuits, both on the personal and professional front. Pinto enjoys a good mental challenge, and the cases he has to work on highlight this trait of his. The book might not give you an adrenaline rush like you would expect, but it does approach the world of ISA officers from a different angle. It aims to be more thought-driven rather than being action-packed, and it can be a hit or miss depending on what the reader wants.
The plot did tend to get lost amidst the detailed description at points, but the story is fast-paced, and the language easy to keep the reader's attention intact.
I must say a good work by the author, but it could have been better. I was expecting a fast-paced, action-packed thriller, and the book's cover did give me this kind of impression to expect this much. The book didn’t turn out to be a complete disappointment, but I was expecting more.
The story runs on a medium pace with the nick-nacks of the life of the agent Pinto of ISA. He is an honest and dedicated officer who doesn’t like to lick his senior’s boots but is willing to sail against the tides. A workaholic and good at his job Pinto struggles with the office politics, failing cooler in the summer heat like in any other government department. Instead of complaining, he focused on the work at hand. There is a certain professional core in the organization that helps him go through the day.
Overall, an interesting read by the author. The anecdotes that shaped Pinto’s life in between are good to read. The book is enjoyable but not for someone expecting a fast-paced thriller. However, it can be a good read on a lazy weekend afternoon soaking in the sun at this time of the winter.
When I first read the title "Back ender", I wanted to know what it is and looking at the cover, I felt that this book would be about some sort of detective novel like Sherlock Holmes and when I started reading it, I totally was at loss of words with the details mentioned about the life of an officer in ISA, Internal Security agency. The personal and professional life of Pinto was narrated really well. Being from the police forces, the author penned down the story really well taking the readers all through the working of the officers at different stages in ISA.
The cases handled by them were also presented in a way that there was no confusion between the three issues the team handled. I felt it was more like a diary of Pinto where we get to witness the important things he does in a day. I felt that at times the long and repetitive descriptions could have been avoided because sometimes the focus on the main context would be diverted. Apart from that the language was lucid and the characterization was brilliant. Out of all, I liked Swamy for his courage and enthusiasm. The people at different caders played their role really well making it a natural read. It felt like a story of a man who might be your neighbor or a relative because the incidents or the routine mentioned were like normal situations and conversations one will have in their home and at work. I really liked the sarcasm from Anita's mother while comparing Pinto with her husband.
“Sir, the situation is under watch.”
Well this statement from Raghavan is my favorite too as I couldnt control my laughter reading it. Overall, it is a good and light read.
How was your day? What are you all reading? Tell me about a book that you finished in one sitting?
Back ender by Udayan Mukerji is a story of Pinto is a middle level officer in the Internal Security Agency. The book traces the ups and downs in his life and profession. Author who has retired from the Indian Police service uses his own experience in the field to weave this story.
The characters are very well built. They are strong and independent and have their own different charismatic effect on the overall plot and will stay in your mind for a long time even after you finish the book.
The narrations are superb which keeps the reader engaged right since the first page. The storyline is absolutely brilliant. The story is fast paced and very intriguing. The language is simple and lucid.
The protagonist, Pinto, is a middle-level IPS officer working at ISA who reports to Raghavan and his chief, Sharad Gutta, constantly for even the smallest events happening at the section. So, if Pinto is going for undercover missions and chief Gutta is giving all the orders then Raghavan’s part is illogical. I feel that it has just been there to add an extra layer in the officials for absolutely no reason as all the decisions are taken by their Chief and all the implementations are done by Pinto.
Pinto has the wont of reminiscing about his early life and he constantly harks back on his IPS training days which just adds to the slow pace of the story. There are so many useless explanations in the book, which clearly shows the lack of editing. This book badly needs editing to remove the erroneous accounts, like eliminating the description of routine, mundane tasks of the protagonist and making the writing crisper. The suspects or the ones under observation by these surveyors are given nicknames that do nothing less than confusing the reader.
How wonderful to finally peer inside the mental workings of government officials. Pinto i is a middle-level officer in the Internal Security Agency (ISA). The author has depicted Pinto's journey of normal day-to-day life, primarily through administration and officials in an intriguing way through this entertaining thriller. The book initiates with a conversation between Pinto and his Driver, provoking sarcasm over a junkie car, exhibiting the circumstance of government organizations and the way of work we commonly perceive in our daily life with jest and humor.
The fiction flows in the same momentum throughout the book. It was not a very suspicious storyline with lots of twists and turns yet it managed to captivate me to read till the end. More than the story it was a portrayal of sensibility. It moves with occasional subplots. Many characters, including protagonists, undergo moral crises, wherein they must decide between self-interest or philanthropy. It's shown here if you have decided on a certain way, you should walk on that even if complications come between.
It begins with humor but as the story moves, we come across bureaucracy ISA prevails. Characters are written with a perfect tint of satire and attraction. They will stay in your head even after the story ends.
This is my introductory time reading in this genre and I enjoyed it. At some places, I felt I was getting bored with the repetitive narration but other than that drawback it was good to read. My Rating 3.8. ⭐
Internal Security Agency (ISA) is an agency who is working for the nation's internal security. . Pinto is a normal middle class officer in ISA. He is very much happy & satisfied with his job as he has the comfort of government job like any other sector. But the risk factor is little bit high here with Pinto as compared to others with lots of challenges & day to day struggles that mad. . From the vault of an ISA officer to IPS officer & the whole system working to solve the cases you find in the book in a very gripping manner. Being a part of ISA the way Pinto solved the cases with lots of mysteries and challenges was narrated to his driver in the book. It's sort of an autobiography of Pinto & his working journey in ISA. . To know more about it grab the book & give it a try. . The cover of the book is very much eye catching. It's just forced you to grab the book and give it a try in one go. The writing style of the book is very much intriguing. It's thrilling full of mysteries but somehow make you connected with the main protagonist Pinto's life. The language is well blend with the storyline where you find the pure authentic kind of wordplay of a suspense thrilling book. The narration of the book is very much gripping. It's a book that make you feel like you are watching a thrilling movie in front of your TV screen but in reality you r just experiencing a reading masterpiece. The characters are nicely developed but author emphasised more n more on Pinto's character only that somehow dragged down the importance of other characters. The book is little bit confusing in some parts that make you go behind to make you connected to the scene. The pace of the book can be more fast n precise that can add an extra crunch to the reading experience.
Back Ender 🦉 Written by Udayan Mukherjee I read this book, this is the story of a man who named Pinto. This reading started with conversations with Pinto and his driver. Pinto is a middle level officer in the internal Security Agency, or ISA who discovers, through a series of episodic experiments that the template for catching spies is not.the gun toting flamboyant of James Bond. He tries to enjoy his work with psychological challenges and confidence. Pinto is a good character. His confident and mentally challenging nature appealing to anyone. Although Pinto is a fictional character. The story also tells of Pinto's life from Police Academy to ISA. it is realized by the excellence of the author's writing. The government institutions are beautifully illustrated. Many of the characters are in many crises. Overall, interesting story.
Pinto describes to his driver how he solved the case with the mysterious experiences he had after becoming an ISA officer. This is a plus of this story. The characterization is ver beautiful. Well written and good cover design. Soft language for ease way to read. I am sharing this book with others.
Pinto is a middle level officer working for the Internal Security Agency (ISA). He is satisfied with his job irrespective of the risks and difficulties it entails. The book shows Pinto's normal day-to-day life in the ISA.
The author provides a knowledgeable insight into the life of officers in the ISA, the internal work and rules and regulations of the body. The book narrates how officers of each level works together as a team to solve the cases and the difficulties they face.
The author had narrated the plot in a simple language with the writing style being able to grasp the reader's attention. The book is full of mysteries which makes it a thrilling experience for the reader. With well developed characters, the author also puts more focus on the character of Pinto, which makes the book seem like a biography of the officer. Although the book is fast paced with gripping narrative, however it seems confusing at a few points.
Black ender is an irresistible book .It was so captivating that I was immediately placed in the heart of the plot . Not to exaggerate it kept me engrossed and gripped. The cover of the book is quite appealing and so is the storyline .
Author does a phenomenal job by creating a mental picture of Pinto and his everyday charades as a government official. Pinto is a mid aged middle level officer in the Internal Security Agency/ ISA who loves his job but there are struggles and challenges too in his mundane job.
Story line is so well written and detailed that anybody can easily correlate to Pinto such as his car troubles for instance. Speaking more about detailing, author gives away such detailed description of ISA which is just impeccable
Even though this is author’s first creation yet he did a steller job in keeping us captivated till the conclusion. Overall, would rate it 5/5 and is definitely one of my favourites from now on. Go for it, you will not regret
Hellllllo... I am back with my 1st review of the year. Excited and elated!
So those who know me know that I love a good cop story where there are cases to solve and criminals to outwit.
This book was one of those reads that literally make you sit back and read. It follows it's own pace and gives you details in a very vivid way and sometimes too vividly. Like remember that one time you were telling someone a story and in the middle of it segue-wayed into some other story quite passionately. That second story became so intense that you kinda lost track of what you were talking about in the 1st place... Yeaps that happened but on a smaller scale.
story is about an internal employee in Internal Security Agency. It helps us to take a secret look into ISA, how it works and yeah, alot of new stuffs that we didn't know then.Pinto, our protagonist who is early way in his 40's and is working for ISA as internal employee. Here, he claims all about Pinto's life from his police academy to ISA. Not only just the title and the book cover but also the parts were titled very intrestingly. There's mythology, humour, lil bit of mystery and thriller part makes the reader's fight or flight hormone released. It's the Author's debut book and I have been amazed at the beautiful and perfect form of narrating; it is true that if a book has enough dialogues it is more nimble to read, but in this case I have not missed it. Highly recommended it and easy to read.
When I read a fiction book, the whole plot rolls in my mind as if I'm watching a movie. Unfortunately, I could get those imageries in some parts of the book only. At times, I felt totally out of the plot and couldn't figure out what's going on. With the above impression, the plot flow wasn't smooth and the writing style is rough to read. I know, the author had put in so much efforts on selection of words. It's obvious by reading but the author had given less importance on plot flow which has a huge impact on readers.
I liked the Story line. The author's imagination was impressive and it's more like a real life story. The story line was backed up by accurate detailing and twists. I would give five star if I were to rate the story line. All the details mentioned in the book provides me a profound knowledge about ISA. The characters are firmly crafted and developed through different phases of the book.
Overall the book seems to be a thrilling and enigmatic read. This book is a great piece of thriller for young readers.
It was perfect read for me these days. The book was recommended by a friend and loads of thanks to her.. Pinto is just amazing. The protagonist is characterised in a way the readers will wonder at. The books discusses security and national and international level things etc as a plot. But still there is something inside, every reader will love it. The plot will create an Adrenaline rush.. Ya théâtre of absurdity works here, if u want something more than a story, this is for you. The book is like, slowly creating an interest in you, you will be there though out the plot as a third party.. This is such reader-including work. The genre is perfectly adapted the story..
This is the story of Pinto, an officer in ISA (Indian Security Agency). We get to see a slice of his life, personal and professional. It does talk about the the inner workings of ISA It was kind of slow, but later did pick up pace. Sometimes I felt it was dragging
A simple Read Pinto is a middle level officer in the Internal Security Agency, or ISA who discovers, through a series of episodic experiences that the template for catching spies is not the gun toting flamboyance of James Bond. Pinto enjoys his job with the all the mental challenges and the perseverance it requires. Like in any other government department and also he deals with the struggles which his job offering in day to day basics. The book also has side stories that, though occasionally anecdotal, paint Pinto’s life in vibrant colours
Coming to the plot,The story involves ISA and IPS and everything what the gripping story needs but it is not a suspenseful tale with twists and turns. The plus point of the book is portrayal of character and narration, Each and every character portrayed with much sensibility because of that I can finish the book.
This story will shows the day to day life of pinto as an isa agent and we can see the insights of government officials work culture like culture of ISA and IPS and defense officials.
There are many conversations which I enjoyed in the story like the puzzle talk between pinto and rajesh and the humour and some light hearted conversation between pinto and his kids.
One thing I liked about Pinto is he loves what he is doing even though when his batch mates from the IPS received promotion and they received some benefits, pinto still values his decision of joining ISA and he loved his job even though it doesn't give him much benefit.
I found it little bit boring for some parts in the story where the pinto past are mentioned
I suggest this book to the one who wants some insights on the ISA and government officials culture.
After a hiatus, I am back to penning my thoughts about the books I read. And I start with Back Ender, written by Udayan Mukherji. The title of the novel propelled me to pick it up. With so much buzz about Ender's Game and the recent Ender Chest from Minecraft game, I was curious to know what this Back Ender is all about.
The book cover shows a man holding a gun and a dark figure approaching from the front in a somber background giving an impression of a suspense thriller. As it is often said, don't judge a book by its cover. Jackets could often be misleading. Anyways, diving deep into the character of our protagonist Pinto, I didn't mind my prenotion.
Pinto starts his career as an IPS officer who later joins ISA or the Internal Security Agency of the country. His job includes keeping an eye on anything unusual or any corruption or similar illicit stuff. He guides a team of watchers and handlers in carrying out surveillance. The leads were passed on to the police or other government agency to take the investigation further.
The above detail was a brief look into the story. Various plots run across the story as the scenes of surveillance. Many watchers keep an open eye and come to the office to report any fishy or untoward incident. These scenes arouse curiosity as they give a whiff of suspense. They were good to read.
Our protagonist Pinto has been depicted as a level-headed, regular family man with many friends and dedicated to his work. His family life with a wife and two kids adds energy and freshness to the story.
Characterization has been top-notch. Every character has a uniqueness, a clear role to play, and takes the story forward. I loved the way Pinto's friend Rajesh solves crossword, or his boss Raghavan playing with words, readiness and sleuthing traits of his PA Swamy, glaring looks of Sher Singh or easy mannerism of his driver Ganga and many more would enhance the experience of knowing them.
The conversations between characters like Pinto and his friends, Pinto and his family further helped to charge the story and carry the plots effortlessly. I loved the snappy and witty dialogues and harmless sarcasm made me break into a smile every now and then.
A cinematic feel in the writing of the author makes it easy to visualize the scenes. Also, the author didn't shy from throwing in some weighty words, once in a while that I have to scramble for my mobile to check the meaning of the words.
The story has a little suspense, little thrill, some exciting moments, minus any murder, let alone the use of a gun. To be honest, I thought how could one create a suspense thriller without murder. But Back Ender can keep you hooked in a secretive manner that you never would have thought.
Back Ender is a drama fiction written by Udayan Mukerji who is a retired IPS officer with almost 30 years of service. It is a set of stories from the life of Pinto who is a middle-aged officer in the Internal Security Agency (ISA). There is more of an Indian vibe to this book. The storyline is quite engrossing. It is not exactly like a spy drama but what maybe happening in these special agent forces where the protagonist has a patient and vibrant personality. Pinto takes his job seriously and is working towards making the ends meet in every side story there is. If you have watched “The Family Man”, the enactment of Shrikant Tiwari was constantly on my mind while reading this one. The mystery unfolding through conversations between characters and causing that one eureka moment was something that I really enjoyed while reading. The things that bother an Indian government official, are something that bothered Pinto too. He too faced creaking doors, uncool air-conditioners, dispositioned cars and somewhere the personal life at stake due to the professional. One thing that I felt would be better, is the title of the book. As someone reading it for the first time, the name didn’t excite me much to read it. Though I understand that “Back Ender” is a title related to all that happens in the backend or a blind spot of all the functioning that happens. A quote by Pinto, “I am a backend man. I do the spadework for the uniformed police and administration to take credit for and glory in”. This statement itself tells you the charade happening behind the scenes. I believe everyone has a story to tell. These stories, though set in the fictional background, I would like to believe that they have happened in someplace. These stories need to be heard. They need to be told. Udayan Mukerji has written this book exceptionally well. It’s like listening to a man who has had thirty good years of experience. Few stories might even take you down roads of right and wrong. Visit them. Learn. Write about your thoughts. Happy Reading!
“Here, at the Agency, we do nothing BUT we do this ‘nothing’ secretly.”
Let’s begin by saying that this book has lots of secrets owing to the secrecy-secret life of an ISA agent. Written by Udayan Mukerji, the novel ‘Back Ender’ explores the life of ISA agent Pinto in a not so luxurious setting, going about his work amid bureaucratic ups and downs, trying to foul plans of foreign spies while making sure his age-old office cooler gets him through the summer heat.
The cover gives a Sherlock Holmes vibe and owing to the book's aura, you might feel the same initially. However, this is far from the romanticized version of spies but is grounded in grudging reality. Agents have to strive to get through their work on a minuscule government budget with promotions on hold and definitely no flamboyant show of bravery. Everything goes through proper planning, patience, and surveillance. While books like Sherlock Holmes make your heart race, this novel showed us that it isn’t all so dramatic. Indeed there is spy work involving secret missions, but they are a long way from the books we read. Considering the author is from the police force, we can trust his insight.
Coming to the point that this is not an over-the-top narrative, it felt dull at certain points. However, the witty remarks and the author’s and his character’s sesquipedalian prose style brought much amusement. The story shifts from present to past to different locations quite often was surprisingly not confusing. I did enjoy the past exposures, although it felt rather unnecessary. Most characters are not overly explored and are kept at bay, staying true to the ISA vibe.
The book is a slow-moving light read - great for someone who is looking to expand their vocabulary. Thesaurus found its generous use in this book. Readers can give this a good old try.
The Back Ender revolves around Pinto, a middle level officer in the Internal Security Agency ( ISA). He discovers, through a series of episodic experiences that the template for catching spies is not the gun toting flamboyance of James Bond. He sets on solving a case that's ridden with danger and mystery. Read this exciting book to find out what happens next !
Pinto is a character I quite liked. I enjoyed reading about him & how he enjoys his job with the all the mental challenges and the perseverance it requires. I liked how the book shows us day to day ongoings in his life. Of course, Pinto was fictional but the way his character is written made him realistic. His character was well developed with almost all the attention in the book.
The focus of the book was to show us a fantastic suspense case but with lots of thrill. While I felt all that thrill at some parts, other parts fell flat where there wasn't much happening. Though, I have a fondness of the way this book wove short stories in a single plot and brought forward a lot to entertain us. It was dark and shadowy but also humourous.
The plot, characterization and expression of emotions was well done but narration could have been better. Though, the twists and ISA details definitely made it intriguing & exciting for me. I enjoyed how this book deals with humanity & it's various sides whether dark or light. It had so much sub themes and details that I couldn't put it down.
Also I cannot wrap up this review without praising the book cover ! Such a pretty one !
It's a debut novel and I'm pretty impressed with it, that's why would totally recommend !
The author, Udayan Mukerji has put together this book with considerable detail to give the readers an inside look at the workings of government officials as Pinto, the male protagonist, a middle-level officer working in the Internal Security Agency (ISA). The story starts by depicting his daily life through administration and life challenges with the introduction of other characters like his driver & many more that I came across while reading this one.
Back Ender is an intriguing and full of mystery storyline. It is a page-turner and it’ll make you feel like watching a thrilling movie in front of your TV screen. It is an interesting portrayal of life and the decisions we all have to make at present in this day and era. The story flows seamlessly, with no unnecessary subplots or side characters that take away from what's important.
The writing style establishes a feel of an authentic suspenseful journey that will stay in your head long after reading it and somehow, it’ll make you feel that you are still connected to Pinto's life as he moves from one adventure to the next.
Although, in my opinion, I felt a reader may need some time going back to comprehend certain parts when they occur again later during narration but overall, this novel has great potential for thrill-seekers who love fast-paced reads filled up with juicy details.
The book’s portrayal of sensibility, where the characters have moral crises and must decide between self-interest and philanthropy comes from the personal experience of the author himself as he is a retired Indian Police officer. This book is more than just an interesting story that captivated me to reach its end.
Have you ever wondered How do our Government officials work? Come to this book BACK ENDER by Udayan Mukerji will let you sneak peek into the life of Government officials.
How the story goes?
The story revolves around Pinto, a middle-level officer in the ISA, Internal Security Agency, who found some suspicious activity going around under his nose. Pinto started to look for perpetrators with his colleague, Rajesh, and senior official, Raghavan. He deployed some of his best officers to find out the traitor of our mother country.
How good are the characters?
I really loved the personality of the protagonist, Pinto, he always seems serene irrespective of chaos in his professional life. He was humorous and kind to his juniors, and a true family man. Though the author has not portrayed him as a macho man in the story he is a true macho man for me.
What I enjoy the most?
I enjoyed the banter between Pinto and his colleague, Rajesh. They formulated a very intriguing method to solve the puzzles. And how can we forget about the humorous jokes on Pinto’s Sarkari car and mustached Sher Singh, the gatekeeper?
Story
The storyline is a do slow-paced thriller revealing the face of traitors. The author did a fantastic job of developing characters of police officers revealing the different phases of investigation. A reader would definitely feel themselves floating into the life of officers of ISA
If you are looking forward to reading something related to the lives of police officials, then go for it. I am sure you will not be disappointed.
" At the agency we do nothing but we do this nothing secretly"
The above is an quote from the book by Raghavan who is the Protagonist Pinto's boss. The quote kind of sums up the book in one line. However, what exactly does it mean, I wouldn't to in detail as I would give out the story.
Pinto is in his early 40's who works as a mid level officer in the ISA, Internal security agency. He has been provided an Ambassador car with no AC and in just about running condition with a driver Ganga. He stays in the officers quarter in RK puram and is given an PA.
How does the agency do it works, what's the role of Pinto, how are the politicians and the agency people connected.
So this excellent written book by the author describes the working of the agency, of course with a storyline too. Pinto though being a mid level officer has a major role for the agency.
The book is described very well and the characters are well formed too. The author did mention in the foreward that a lot of work has gone into writing this book, it definitely shows as the book is very well written and the language of the book is simple yet interesting.
I did love how the author has described the inter mingling of politics and the agency. It does give a lot of insight of things I wasn't aware of.
The books cover is so well done, I actually has different ideas about what the book would be but I was totally wrong.
The book is of 294 pages and 20 chapters. It is the ideal length I felt as I was hooked till the very end.
Excellent book for all. I would highly recommend it

"It is ridiculous to set a detective story in New York. New York is itself a detective story."- Agatha Christie
Sherlock Holmes was my first web series which I witnessed on my new laptop screen during my engineering days. Trust me, it is the only series in the English language which is completed by me. This series played an important role in my inclination towards detectives novels.
Pinto is the protagonist of this story. He is working for ISA, an agency for national security. A government job is always appealing for middle-class people, the same concept applies to 'Sherlock' of this story. Every investment comes with risk and returns. I hope you remember, Prateek Gandhi's words in the web series SCAM, "Risk hai to Ishq hai". Pinto's job involves a river full of versatile risks. Do you think he can solve the cases efficiently and effectively? What are the various challenges faced by him? To discover answers to these questions, grab this book!!

Udayan Mukherjee retired from the Indian Police Service, after more than three decades of service. He is the receipt of the prestigious Indian Police medal and the President's medal for distinguished services.
The well-defined plot, Pinch of humor is there to engage you, and Easy to read is its TRP. Overall, it's a good work by the debut author.
To know how much effort goes into the job of carrying out various investivations at each level of Internal Security Agency the book, Back Ender by Udayan Mukerji portrays all.
🧩The story revolves around Pinto, an ISA officer who loves to solve mystries involved in investigations through his excellent planning approach. He is appreciated by his seniors for his dedication and hardwork.
🎲The author makes sure to give the glimpse of Pinto's life by focussing every aspect of his starting from his training, family life and present service.
🧩Based in Delhi the story kick starts with a conversation between Pinto and his driver, Ganga who always struggle with their old car allotted by the government which keeps breaking down often.
🎲As the story revolves around investigating connection of a high level business tycoon with the internal government affairs a lot many characters are introduced who beautifully take the story forward.
🧩The story does not involve lots of surprises but manages to keep the mystery well hidden till the end.
😀To lighten the mood of the readers the author has brilliantly added humour at the right place as the story moves ahead.
😬The narration seemed repetitive at many places and the story could have been wrapped up early.
🎯Final Word: The book reflects the bureaucracy that prevails in ISA and their methods to tackle situations in otherwise tough conditions. Overall an enjoyable read full of thrill, satire and mystery.

🔫 Slow to medium paced plot with little twists and turns. I personally got to learn many new things. People who serve on national/internation duty should highly be valued and respected for the service they do. You can even get a knowledge about day to day life of such officers here as well.
An engrossing and fast paced thriller. When it comes to thrillers a gripping plot is the key to the readers' hearts, however, in this page turning and thrill more often than not the literary aspects of the novel are ignored. And quite few authors take this as granted and pay hardly and attention to detail. Fortunately, this isn't the matter with Udayan Mukerji's Back Ender. It is an engrossing fast paced thriller with a milieu of sarcastic, witty, and certainly life-like character developed meticulously. The prose remains fluid and the vivid imagery backs it up. The plot and subplots seem as if they have taken from real life and dropped into the novel; Back Ender could very easily be a story that takes place in your neighborhood.
Back Ender is the story of a middle aged employee of the Internal Security Agency, ISA. Pinto, a character that is mirrored on the author's self and his te serving in the Indian Police Service, had been working at the ISA for quite some time. Through his persona we get to know about the inner workings of the Agency. Other than Pinto's daily life at ISA we are introduced to the brave hearted and funny Swamy, and the sometimes clueless Raghavan who always had "the situation under control". This novel has a great blend of emotions and suspence which makes it a fluid read and a much recommended one for people looking for a short yet engaging crime thriller.
