When you are 16 years old and everything about your life sucks, maybe there isn't much you can do about it. On the other hand, maybe you can steal your father's car, run away, make friends with a hitchhiker who changes your life, find a girlfriend who helps you grow up, steal a couple of million dollars from mobsters in New Orleans, and end up working at your uncle's Shell station in California. Yeah, that sounds like a better plan.
I do not do reviews often but this book was such a treasure that I really had to share my thoughts on this one. Some of the appeal of the book might be because I know the author and have long admired his work. Coming from a background of being a former UPI reporter, the author has a certain concise style that does not waste words, but manages to 'take you there." The inner dialogues are filled with a kind of humor that has just enough subtlety so you have to be paying attention. The story line would sound very strange if I tried to explain it but Arthur (Bill) makes it work. I became so caught up in this young man's adventure that I could not put the book down.
If you want to experience a real hidden gem, I would recommend this book. I hope all my friends on goodreads will give this one a try.
