I have three betrothed mates? You’ve got to be kidding me.

There’s enough to do with upheaving our kingdom out of the ice age and into the modern world as well as undoing the harm done to the people who live here without adding romance to it, but that’s my life. With my crown comes three men who all have some kind of claim on me, and they have the contracts to prove it. Contracts written when I was a newborn baby, too little to be consulted on my desires for my future.

The thing is. Each one is irresistible in their own way. It might not be so bad.

For years, after my parents’ murder and my sister’s disappearance, I lived in a tower, a mere child with a crown. A pawn called a queen, subject to the regency of the one who caused all my pain. And who was proceeding to strip my subjects and the very land of everything valuable while pretending to be my loving guardian. With Uncle Bors finally removed, I’m up to my eyeballs in kingdom business. Old laws, new troubles, and the ghost of my uncle are all occupying space in my head?

Can’t a queen get a moment’s peace?

Determined is the second book in a paranormal reverse harem shifter series featuring a queen wolf shifter with hearing loss who must step out from being a puppet ruler to the true ruler of her people and the three male wolf shifters who all want to be her fated mate. It is a why-choose werewolf romance with a slow burn buildup sure to make your toes curl. Relationships develop over the course of this supernatural series and, of course, Mazzy guarantees an HEA.

We have a little suspense, lots of love and trying to help her people. I gave it 4 stars, because there are areas in the story where it ends, but yet leaves you hanging. This happens in a few of the chapters. Janis is coming to accept her 3 mates, but still needs to feel free after what her Uncle did to her. She is struggling to take care of her kingdom and turn everything back to what it was when her parents ruled. Can she do this? Can she get the trust of her people? Can she bring the modern world into her kingdom, but still keep it green? Will she ever get over being scared of Uncle? Can her mates help her? Can they protect her? Will she listen to them?

Determined is book two in the Queen's Mates series. It has a little suspense, action, and much romance. Janis and her mates, Leif, Gunnar, and Arne, are working hard to rebuild the kingdom and the trust of her subjects. Unfortunately, she gets a huge surprise when they discover something about her evil Uncle Bors. Once again, the Council failed to be truthful and put her and her kingdom at risk. Despite this, it is heartening to see Janis's dedication to rebuilding her kingdom and how much she cares about the people. Janis's mates are right there with her as each of their strengths is put to good use helping in the effort to bring the kingdom into the twenty-first century. I was a little disappointed that we did not see her twin and her mates make an appearance in this book, not even a phone call. But then again, they are swamped in this book.

The relationship that Janis has with each of her mates is distinctive and growing. Each meets specific needs without stepping on the other, and the three male mates complement each other. There is also no jealousy drama. It will be nice when they can finally formalize their relationship with the mating ceremony; however, compliments to Janis for holding off on the ceremony so she and her mates can get to know one another. She is also putting her kingdom first, which is beyond commendable and entirely selfless, but not overly so.

Janis is a strong character, more than she knows. She has deep compassion and love for her people and can stand and take control when needed. Yet, she has flaws in that she has doubts, questions her decisions, and battles insecurities. These attributes make her believable, lovable, wise, and less likely to repeat her Uncle's ego power-driven failures. She pulls you into her world, and you want her to succeed.

The next book in the series is Fated. I look forward to reading it!

Overall 3.5 stars

Determined is the second book in the Queen's Mates series. The story continues as Janis finds her way to being a new queen, a queen with power. Bors (former Regent and her uncle) left the kingdom in a mess Janis is determined to do right by her people. She's running herself ragged night and day to bring the kingdom into the modern age with electricity, running water, the Internet, and so on. All the while making sure their base needs are handled. Janis has taken on a lot but she is responsible, has a big heart, and is the hardest worker, she truly is a good queen even if she's unsure about some things.

This type of reverse harem is a little new to me, Janis doesn't have the normal relationships I've seen with mates, especially in reverse harems. Janis and the guys' relationship so far resembles the old period piece type of relationship where they have different bedrooms, they work together but there is a bit of separateness too. They clear have affection for each other but I'm not getting that bonded vibe. Surprisingly enough, all her arranged mates are actually a good fit for Janis, they are what she needs, they like her, and get along with each other.

The weirdness of this book is how this kingdom is set up in the middle of the modern world but is stuck in the middle ages technology wise. They don't have all of these normal things and still wear formal wear but jeans, cars, and the internet is known. It's is a unique twist in a story. This book mainly got into all the technological advances that Janis is making and how the kingdom is adapting.

I will admit that the story wasn't that compelling to me. Sure an old enemy returned but there wasn't any real excitement and the relationships needs some work. Determined was a quick and easy read but I am wondering where the story is going and I'd things will get more exciting in the next book.

Janis, as queen, is desperately trying to undo the horror that her uncle caused. Bringing her kingdom up to date is her goal and the guys are helping her as they keep her safe. When the uncle causes trouble again, he had better watch out and Janis and her guys make a darn good team now. The characters are well done with details that give them depth. The storyline is action packed with surprises and twists you do not see coming. Can not wait for the next book in the series.

Excellent book two by this author. This series gets better and better. Characters have certainly grown and for me she is more fiercer to carry out her duties to help her people. The chemistry between them is coming along nicely.

No.

Did not get better from the first book. I only read these because I was Buddy reading them and oh man do I wish I could have quit early. So many issues. These are not edited.
