Capital Chronicles - The History You Were Never Told

Rate this book
The object of my attention is the Curious History of Canada's National Capital Region, and there is much to share. The facts are all there, but they simply form the basis for the more colourful parts of the whole story - the History you Were Never Told.

I saw the episode with Alanis Morissette on Finding Your Roots. She is, of course, from Ottawa and one of her ancestors was mentioned on the show. I looked up the book referenced in the episode (an old tome written in 1906 by Anson Gard called Pioneers of the Upper Ottawa) but Rick's book, Capital Chronicles also popped up in my search (he does reference Gard's book in Captial Chronicles)
The author, it should be noted, is related to Ottawa royalty so to speak - the Leamy and Wright pioneer families. So the "history you were never told" has many stories about these families. I didn't realize when picking up this book that it is based on Rick's blog so the tone is casual which is great because who needs a stuffy and boring history book. Rick writes like he's an old friend so you'll be able to easily devour this.
I especially enjoyed reading Rosa's letter after the fire and also fully intend to take a walking tour past Brewery Bay in the spring.

One note, the images in the book are sometimes small and lack contrast but upon further investigation I was able to find the images on his blog where they appear crisp with better detail. No fault to Rick, of course, that is simply the nature of paper/printing. I found it helpful to look online when studying maps.
