Our brains do amazing things: they determine our actions, our thoughts, and our feelings. We may not always realize it, but the brain is central to the way we experience life. So what happens when brain circuits break? What are the consequences for our behavior and personality?
From Parkinson's disease to Tourette's syndrome and depression to psychopathy, Broken Brains reveals the mysteries of brain function--and dysfunction. In this no-nonsense introduction, Ian Mitchell takes you on a tour through the sometimes devastating and sometimes bizarre effects of what happens when brains break down.
Highly readable and packed with anecdotes and real examples from neurosurgery, this book brings biological psychology to life, making it the perfect introduction to understanding the brain and what happens when things go wrong.
Broken Brains By Ian Mitchell This book is intended to dumb down the science speak so regular folks can enjoy the information and I think the author did a good job of doing that. I have been in the health field all my life and a great deal of it working with "broken brains" in one way or another. The author covers a lot of territory and I learned some things. While discussing growth hormones, the famous soccer player Messi needed it as a child but the family was too poor but the soccer team FC Barcelona provided the shots! I never had heard that before!
The personal anecdotes/case studies of neurology in this book were fascinating and the science behind them was broken down into layman's terms enough for someone with no background in neuroscience to understand and enjoy it
