Superhuman #4

Heroic: The Golden Age

Rate this book
Five years ago, the world changed forever.

We were discovered. No once noticed. We were invaded. No one realized. We fought back. No one... cared. In the last moments before defeat, our enemy deployed a bioweapon, spreading an invisible pandemic to the winds.

The world just wanted to go back to normal.

A third of the population have the genetic code needed to activate the Quantum Virus. Billions of people, waiting to wake up one morning with powers. Abilities. Enhancements beyond that of mortal men.

The aliens bet on us destroying ourselves in the ensuing madness, but not all humans revel in destruction. When Order and Chaos go to war, Chaos always wins in the short term... but heroes know how to play the long game.

Looking back, will this be the beginning of the end, or the start of the Golden Age?

Surprisingly good.

I found myself liking this book. And I read it through in one go. I was however disappointed that the main characters of the first books didn’t make much of an appearance. Basically this is a new series in the same universe.

Superhuman Rides Again

This my favorite series by Evan Currie, so much so that I quit reading in the middle of another series to read it, and despite camouflaging itself as a new series, it is Superhuman 4, set 5 years after book 3. And that is the end of the spoilers.

I still miss Hale

What a fantastic read, had all the people we have loved from the start and new ones also. A sequel or two would be great.

Great world building and Origin stories!

Can't wait for more. And would be great to have audio versions drop at the same time. Evan I know you have many titles you are working on but this is my favorite, so hurry along please!

Fun story I've been waiting for but...

While I've been anticipating and hoping for a continuation of the Superhuman and love the world of comic book superheroes battling for justice I find I'm deeply disappointed with Heroic: The Golden Age; not because of any lack in the story or the characters or the direction that the universe has taken but for the simple fact that it is obvious than Mr Currie, a gifted writer without doubt, thinks so little of is the reader that a manuscript of this quality was published without more proof reading than a cursory pass through spell check before sending it up at Amazon.

What was easily a 4/5 star novel was thrown up for us with a minimum of 30 typos, or plot slips throughout that any casual read through would reveal. Dropped words, homonyms, miss-typed characters, and plot errors abound.

Some examples:
A person enters a Ferrari dealership, takes position behind one of the vehicles, then proceeds to prop his weapon across the hood of the Ford.
A female character's dialog is marked by "he said".
A cloud is sword rises above a burning building.
Events happen at a location that is both the 17th and 18th precinct depending on the paragraph.

I was 20% through the book before I began marking things like "wad" instead of "way" or similar typos that jar the reading to a halt because they were so numerous that it impacted the experience. (I stopped when the count passed 20 prior to the climactic battle)

If Mr Currie is too hard pressed for simple beta readers, I volunteer. It is a travesty that a great story crashes to an un-enjoyable reading experience. That it did so in such an egregious and easily avoidable manner is why I only give this 2 stars instead of the 4 it might otherwise have received.

A continuation of the original Superhuman trilogy, this book shares the same universe and has a few cameos from the original, but is otherwise quite distinct. Where the first three books were straight mil-fi, this one is a bit more YA-oriented and uses a lot more superhero tropes.

The setup is quite good, and you get a good feel of what it would be to live in a world where you got a lot of super-heroic powered people all over the place, one that is trying to find its balance. The cosmic threat we - the reader - know about thanks for omniscient reader viewpoint in the original trilogy takes a backseat to simple human politics and villainry. This is the kind of story you'd expect to see in the MCU, where you have super heroes all the time, and it works almost as well.

The only regret is, of course, the relative lack of the original characters. But you quickly become enamored of the emergent super-powered heroes, and the story goes to a good - albeit of course temporary - conclusion.

Great continuation of the Superhuman universe. Loved getting a look at how the world is changing a few years later with so many possible powered people available.
Quite liked the new characters, Issa and Devon. They were believably teenagers while still fun characters. Looking forward to seeing what Evan does with Nova as well.

Hopefully we'll get to see more of Hale in the future- it definitely seems like Evan is planning to bring him back at some point.

Biggest problem with the book was that there were quite a few typos- he instead of she popped up a few times, sword instead of smoke, multiple missing spaces, etc. It could use another editing run.

Will definitely be picking up the next book in the series!

Good followup from the trilogy

Mr Currie puts interesting character development into a rapid paced storyline... And I couldn't put the book down ... Read the whole thing in one day. Offering a quantum rationale for the "magic" of super powers, the plot and storyline hang together to allow that "suspension of disbelief" necessary for a reader to get invested in the story. Well done, Mr Currie... Though there were a double handful of dropped words / misplaced words that act as pin hole leaks in that balloon of suspended disbelief. I will continue to buy your stories as long as you wish to write them.

Fantastic

Restarting the ‘Superhuman’ series 5 yrs later. This is SF and super heroes combined into an amazing world. The plot works great, characters are solid, jokes are fun, and I couldn’t be happier…

…except, the proofreading is sub-par. There were sentences (not many, but enough to notice) that did not make sense. “…that time she fell off the cape…”. Uhhh, what? There were a few homonyms that slipped by, but more words that are spelled similar without being the same (route / rout).

I wanted to give this 5 stars. It just needs to be cleaner.

Great storyline but .....

Honestly if it hadn't been for who the author was, and how good the storyline was, I'd have quit several pages in, however I love this author's work so I persevered through all the mistakes. How many mistakes, well the same character was called two different names on the same page, the main character started out as Is a bit ended up as Issa, so very frustrating. For all that still a good continuation of Superhumans.

This was ok, plenty of action to keep you from getting bored. I didn't like that they showed the Marine early in the book, seemingly pseudo-dead, but you assumed he'd wake up near the end or at some important moment. Yet it never happened. I think they should have just had him be fully dead if they weren't going to have him come back.

I did like the new girl superhuman, her powers were interesting. But damn, did it slow down some of the earlier stuff between her and her app-writing friend.

Interesting Story

Overall I liked Heroic: The Golden Age, I’ve been following developments since Superhuman.
Many new characters with a few tossed in from previous books.
It was a fun and interesting read.
However there were far too many spelling and grammar errors that detracted from the story causing me to back up, re-read passages to make sense of what I’d read.
Really needs a better job of proofreading and editing.

Fun, fun read! Off the beaten path!

I just thoroughly enjoyed this story! It was a fun twist to what was a novel concept in the first place. The characters really drag you in, then when the action starts, there’s no way to stop until THE END. Literally. No wave to the future direction, no preliminary chapter. No nothin’ but my imagination to see what comes next. Uncertainty principle personified!

Started a bit slow but got really good in the end

Started a bit slow but got really good in the end. The characters are a bit lacking an image but have well crafted personalities and there is plenty of action, suspense and mystery, al well as a great treat that needs to be addressed in furder books

Absolutely brilliant follow up.

This is an excellent continuation of the story that started with the Marine's story. The action was exceptional and Issa's arc was compelling. I've read most of this author's work and am truly looking forward to more, all the way up to the inevitable confrontation with the convocation.

Typos and wrong words damage an awesome story

I'm taking off a star because the editor failed to correct many errors in grammar, word usage, and spelling. I know autocorrect doesn't catch the wrong word off it happens to be spelled correctly, that's what proof reading is about.
The story itself is great. I'm looking forward to a sequel. There had better be a sequel.

a wonderful read about superheroes

After being introduced to the characters in the story, the reader is taken along on a wild ride with superheroes, law enforcement, super villains, the military, and more with the conclusion neatly wrapping up all the details. The reader is left wanting sequels to this story.

You won't be able to put it down

I was happy to see a new book in the series. I just wish I had seen it in the morning instead of 8 pm. I couldn't put this book down. So I'm writing this a 3AM because it just that awesome. You get introduced to some great new characters. The reaction to the events of the previous books are just so in line with how people would react in reality.

Great story, needs proof reading

I really enjoyed this story. Unfortunately, the mass of typos evidence the need for a careful proof read. I would have rated this book much higher except the shear volume of typos was very distracting, and even confusing at time. It repeatedly took me out of the story. Mr. Currie, please fix this.

Good follow up

Good story with interesting characters. I have to say that the number of typos almost made me scream. This author desperately needs a competent proof reader. There are so many errors that it really detracted from my pleasure in reading this book. There were errors in the earlier books in this series but not nearly as many.

Top notch superhero novel

This is an excellent novel, it avoids the normal superhero tropes. A few minor criticisms but easily waved to give 5 star rating. I look forward to the next story.

Heroic

This was a very fast action book. Great character development. Neat plot twists. I recommend it highly as a book once you start you won’t want to put it down. WANT/NEED ANOTHER BOOK TO CONTINUE THE STORY LINE.

Great story...so many typos

Evan Currie has started a great successor series to his Superhuman trilogy. As usual his characters come alive. But soo many typos and wrong words throughout the book. Often enough to briefly kick you out of the story.

What a rush!

Evan hits it out of the park again. Seriously is there anything this man can write that's not a page turner?

Action from beginning to end. Tragic death. Cliff hanger continues with the Marine.

Thank you for another great read.

Edge of the seat

Story had me at the edge of the seat at times. I liked the way the story, plot and characters were revealed slowly like peeling an onion and very well done. Hoping for the next book in the series.

Such a great story! With lots of errors...

This was one of the best stories I've read in a while. Love the characters and the universe.

But... Personally, I'd wait until a new edited version is released, because there are A LOT of minor mistakes.

Exciting new book in this fabulous series

Another awesome book in this series. In serious need of a new editor, though. Numerous slips in wording and grammar were distracting, but the storyline and writing was otherwise excellent. 5 stars for author. 2 stars for editor.

Only reason I got this book was because I thought it was going to have Hale, and show us how strong he'd gotten, and continue on with his legacy. Without him even being awake in the book it just sucks.
