Excellent Book for Beginning or Intermediate Yoga Nidra Practitioner
I am relatively new to Yoga Nidra, so when I saw this book at a favorite book review site, I knew I had to check it out. I am so glad I did. If you are only familiar with the twisty, bendy yoga asanas, Yoga Nidra is wholly different. The phrase “Yoga Nidra” stands for yogic sleep, a special practice that incorporates physical relaxation with mental awareness. I love the cover of this book as it so embodies what my experience of Yoga Nidra has been. This book explains the background of Yoga Nidra—something I didn't know as I stumbled upon Yoga Nidra on YouTube—and has 24 different Yoga Nidra scripts that you can record for yourself. Some are written by the author, while different practitioners write others. After the introductory material comes the largest section of the book, the practice portion with the meditations. The author starts with foundational Yoga Nidra meditation before moving on to more specific ones, like for special groups of people (e.g., children, men, women), as well as health, well-being, and healing. The book is well structured. Each section introduces the meditations to come with a few lines about each meditation within it. Each meditation has a good structure as well, discussing more deeply what it is about as well as talking about its structure and processes. I liked that breakdown because it has helped me create my own meditations. I love the four appendices at the back that dive deeper into particular topics like Yoga Nidra and brain waves, the chakras, and how to lead Yoga Nidra for a group. While I haven't tried every meditation in the book, the ones I have tried certainly have deepened my understanding and appreciation of the practice of Yoga Nidra… and have brought centeredness and peace to my daily life. Much needed! I had already incorporated it into my life for sleep, as I am a lifelong insomniac, and I now look forward not only to practicing the meditations in this book but also the meditations it has inspired me to create on my own. Highly recommended.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
I will start by saying I would recommend this book to others, and may gift copies of this book to people I know who might find it useful.
Containing a wealth of information, this book is an excellent resource for information on yoga nidra. Ms. Lusk gives many options for scripts to use for meditations, including many from other experts in the field. I wish she had omitted meditations from "gurus" who were involved in sexual abuse allegations, but she included some of those as well. I guess there is something to be said about not throwing the baby out with the bath water, so to speak.
She included very helpful information like contraindications for using yoga nidra, and certain techniques. She also offered alternatives to certain techniques given certain conditions of the listener.
I do wish she had included some of the origins of yoga nidra, and the story of the goddess Nidra, because that gives context. I look forward to using some of these scripts with my yoga students. Also, after having read this book, if I hear the phrase "More and more," one more time, I might scream. There are so many other ways to say that. Ms. Lusk could have picked a few and scattered them throughout the book. Nope. She chose to stick with "More and more," in almost every script, which is vexingly repetitive.
This is not a book you sit down on a beach to read. And it’s not for those unfamiliar with yoga. But that said, if you have a significant amount of training or experience with yoga or tantra and are looking to expand your repertoire or teaching practice, this is a fantastic resource. Each script has a very clear voice of its author. That said, you can change them to fit your own voice (which I did) or pick the parts that most appeal to you, as suggested by Julie Lusk. This is a great resource.
This book was a nice discovery to add to my yoga routine. The book explains extensively the benefits of this type of practice to release stress and obtaining a good state of mind.
Note: I received an Arc for review purposes and an honest and unbiased opinion.
The book is divided into the following parts and chapters and contains 24 scripts for Yoga Nidra meditations.
Part 1: Preparation One: Yoga Nidra Essentials Two: Guidelines for Personal Practice
Part 2: Practice Three: Foundations Four: Special People and Groups Five: Health and Well-Being Six: Fifteen Minutes for Yoga Nidra
Each meditation has a time frame listed along with a summary describing the meaning or purpose. The author goes on to list each of the different stages or processes that the reader will go through during the meditation.
I have been practicing Yoga Nidra less than a year and find it helps me relax. I saw this book and thought it sounded interesting. I have never read a Yoga Nidra script before having always been on the receiving end of them. Since I have an older Kindle, it has the ability to read this book to me. As mentioned in the beginning of the book, an idea would be to read and record the scripts using a voice recorder so you can listen and relax. Definitely should be on the shelf of anyone interested or practicing Yoga Nidra.
