With a twinge of survivor's guilt, she developed a morbid fascination with who lives and who dies and why.

Being the oldest of six siblings forced Addison to lead by example. Her golden reputation solidified well into her thirties. But every good girl needs to have an outlet. What Comes Before Dawn, Book #1 in the Mynart Mystery Thriller has quite an interesting plotline. A woman who suffers from blackouts, having no memory of the time spent, but still remains functional and carries out daily activities has an alluring enigma to it. I sympathize with those suffering with it thou but like Amnesia, this is a plot device that can be twisted in any number of ways to create jaw-dropping thrillers and I did expect one going into Addison Michael’s What Comes Before Dawn. What came as an unexpected addition is the reveal of the whodunnit of the murder which had me gobsmacked, coming out of nowhere.

For readers who love a fast-paced mystery, What Comes Before Dawn would certainly be appealing. But for fans of mystery thrillers who read many novels in the genre, this story would be exciting to read but not gripping enough, and the reasons for this are several. For starters, the POV of the BAD GUY alternating with Paige’s had no element of thrill. I mean the reader is very much aware of who the BAD GUY is in the story and who is stalking Paige so, the psychological scare of being terrorized by someone is lost. Secondly, the twists in the story except for the final one never induce any surprise, coz most books in the genre have the same or similar surprises and then there is the logical implausibility of certain details in the story like the fact that Paige is able to more or less walk into a witness room inside a police station and then she is also able to walk inside a crime area and check things without being once questioned or stopped by anyone, well, I didn't feel it gelled all that smoothly.

What works exceedingly well, though in What Comes Before Dawn is the subtle dark plotline that runs in the story, and with a small paranormal element added in, it keeps the readers engaged from start to finish.

3.5 engaging stars.

Looking forward to knowing how Paige moves forward in her life and what new mystery is waiting for her.

I think that the best word to describe this book with is: fine. 2.5 stars is not an option, but that is what I really wanted to give this book because it just falls flat in the middle.

The book was very predictable and leaned heavily on suspense fiction tropes. The author wanted us to be surprised, but I felt no surprise at all. I know that this book is fiction, but the storyline made no logical sense in any manner. Additionally, I hated the fact that one of the characters was just referred to as "Bad Guy" in his POV chapters. Once I read that, there was no way in which I could take any of this book seriously.

Unreliable narrators drive me nuts!!! This is a book that is a part of a series and it’s maddening. I really didn’t like or relate to any of the main characters or the storyline. Just sorta was all over the place. Ending was frustrating but I know the author was doing a lead up to the sequel but this is where my journey ends.

As a debut novel, I was impressed with its fast pace. However even though it came highly recommended by other book reviewers, I felt like it didn't live up to the high expectations within the psychological thriller genre. That being said, it was still an enjoyable read.

Book Review: What Comes Before Dawn (A Mynart Mystery Thriller #1) by Addison Michael

Overview
What Comes Before Dawn is the inaugural novel in Addison Michael’s Mynart Mystery Thriller series, presenting a gripping blend of suspense, psychological intrigue, and supernatural elements. The story revolves around a complex heroine, delving into a world fraught with dark secrets, paranormal twists, and an exploration of the human psyche. Set against a backdrop of an enigmatic town, the narrative draws readers into a web of mystery that combines emotional depth with a fast-paced plot.

Key Themes
Psychological Complexity: The protagonist’s journey is marked by her intricate psychological landscape, reflecting the theme of mental struggle and resilience. Michael adeptly portrays her internal conflicts, inviting readers to engage with her fears and motivations. This psychological depth not only adds dimension to the character but also serves to highlight the broader theme of self-discovery amidst chaos.

Supernatural Elements: The introduction of paranormal twists enriches the narrative, creating an atmosphere of suspense and intrigue. These elements challenge the characters’ perceptions of reality and morality, compelling them to confront their beliefs and choices. Michael’s skillful integration of the supernatural into the thriller genre enhances the story’s complexity and keeps readers on the edge of their seats.

Isolation and Community: The setting plays a crucial role in shaping the narrative, illustrating the tension between isolation and community. The protagonist’s experiences in the town of Mynart underscore themes of belonging and alienation. As she navigates her relationships with other characters, the novel explores how community dynamics can influence individual actions, reinforcing the idea that personal struggles often occur within a larger social context.

Mystery and Discovery: Central to the plot is the theme of mystery and the quest for truth. As the protagonist unravels the dark secrets of those around her, the narrative emphasizes the importance of curiosity and perseverance in the face of danger. Michael masterfully constructs a storyline filled with twists and turns, encouraging readers to piece together clues alongside the protagonist and heightening the sense of suspense throughout the book.

Empowerment and Agency: The novel also addresses themes of empowerment and female agency, particularly through the lens of the protagonist’s journey. As she confronts external threats and her internal demons, her evolution reflects a broader commentary on the strength and resilience of women. Michael’s portrayal of a female lead who challenges societal expectations and asserts her autonomy resonates with readers, making the narrative not only thrilling but also empowering.

Conclusion
What Comes Before Dawn is a compelling start to Addison Michael’s Mynart Mystery Thriller series, blending elements of psychological drama, supernatural intrigue, and suspenseful storytelling. The author’s ability to create a richly layered narrative, combined with well-developed characters and engaging themes, makes this book a significant contribution to contemporary thriller literature.

"What Comes Before Dawn" by Addison Michael is a gripping thriller that takes readers on an intense journey of suspense, secrets, and self-discovery. Paige Deffer's life is shattered with a single phone call revealing her mother's murder, thrusting her into a world of deception and danger that she never could have anticipated.

The strength of Michael's narrative lies in the skillful weaving of a complex web of secrets, lies, and unexpected twists. From the very beginning, the reader is drawn into Paige's world, where the unsettling revelation about her mother's true identity sets the stage for a thrilling exploration of hidden truths. The author adeptly creates a sense of urgency that propels the story forward, making it difficult for readers to put the book down.

Paige's character is well-crafted, and her journey of self-discovery adds depth to the narrative. As she peels back the layers of deception surrounding her mother's past, she is forced to confront not only external threats but also the shadows within herself. The emotional turmoil and psychological tension that Paige experiences contribute to the overall intensity of the story.

The unraveling of multiple secrets and the introduction of suspicious characters keep the plot engaging. Michael succeeds in creating an atmosphere of suspense, prompting readers to question the motives and true identities of the characters. The incorporation of unexpected twists adds an extra layer of intrigue, keeping the reader guessing until the final pages.

While "What Comes Before Dawn" is a thrilling read with a well-executed plot, some readers may find certain elements of the storyline somewhat predictable. The theme of hidden identities and dark pasts has been explored in the thriller genre before, and Michael follows a familiar pattern. However, the author's execution and the incorporation of unique twists make the novel stand out.

In conclusion, "What Comes Before Dawn" is a solid four-star thriller that delivers on its promise of suspense and mystery. Addison Michael's ability to craft a compelling narrative, combined with well-developed characters and unexpected twists, makes this a worthwhile read for fans of the genre. If you enjoy thrillers that explore the complexities of identity and unravel dark secrets, "What Comes Before Dawn" is a compelling addition to your reading list.

What Comes Before Dawn
A Mynart Mystery Thriller
By: Addison Michael
Narrated by: Mira Williams

I love a mystery that has me guessing until the very end. Addison Michael's first book in her Mynart Mystery Thriller series will make you think and wonder the entire time you listen. Paige has always watched out for her mother. A woman who loses time and has no recollection of what has happened, Paige feels a responsibility to keep her safe. But when her mother turns up murdered, life as Paige knows it is about to change. Characters from their past surface, each having a story or reason to be in Paige's life, creating havoc and doubts. It was easy to fall into this mystery, and just when I thought I knew the answers, a doubt or new person would show up. It's original and the ending is completely unexpected! This is my first Addison Michael book, and definitely will not be my last!

Mira Williams tells this story and it's perfection. Emotion, lack of emotion, fear, frustration, mistrust and doubt, each one precise and exactly as the story should be told. I found myself all in as I listened to this, and Williams made it come to life. Fantastic listen!

Filled with twists aplenty and a ton of suspense, mystery and action, “What Comes Before Dawn” will keep you on the edge of your seat, engaged and enthralled from beginning to jaw dropping end! The characters are fantastic! Some likable, some throughly detestable, but all brilliantly and beautifully defined. The plot, dark, mysterious and suspenseful yet easy to follow, really held my attention and I loved the hint of paranormal! What completely blew me away was the ending! No spoilers, but I didn’t see it coming! It was so creepy, and so good! Speaking of good, the narration was done beautifully, bringing not only the glorious characters, fabulous dialogue and fantastic scene setting to life, but also conveying the incredibly dark and foreboding feel of this story beautifully! This one was truly a fabulous listen on all counts! Five stars across the board!

This was my 1st book by the author and I was excited to dive right in. I listened to the audiobook which was well done by the narrator. The novel keeps your interest and has you guessing from the first through pages through the end. This well written story is centered around Paige who did not have the typical childhood. Her father was murdered before her birth and her mother is forever missing or "checked out". Paige basically raises herself and looks out for her mother who seems to have more holes in her memory than swiss cheese. Suddenly, Paiges mother is murdered and "all these people who knew her" show up at the funeral. Steven, her boyfriend, sets out to help her figure things out. Paige has a handfull of unanswered questions and isn't sure who she can trust. Many things are unveiled and truths slowly emerge. Loved the ending! 4 1/2 out of 5 stars.

Paige’s mother has been murdered. Her boyfriend has been lying to her. Then there are the people from her mother’s past, can they be trusted? Is Paige safe or is she next? Is there anyone she can turn to? It is up to Paige to discover the truth about the past of both her mother and herself so that she can move on to her future.
I was hooked from the first chapter and really enjoyed following Paige in this murder mystery. Paige is a strong, likeable character who I immediately felt empathy for and quickly became invested. The plot was great, with some good twists and suspenseful moments. I really got into the flow of this writing style and found it hard to put the book down. I would definitely recommend this murder mystery.

This is the first book that the author Addison Michael has read, and it is also a good book. I've read murder thrillers before, but this one was really good.
From start to finish this story was well put together, through the suspense and danger, secrets even murders much more, but also the many twists and turns in it and nothing was what it seemed, you were surprised from start to finish. Paige has to endure a lot in her search for her mother's murder because it is not what it seems and everything she thought is no longer true, so she sets out to find out the truth about everything and who she is now considered to be. there were many secrets. This book is definitely recommended!

This book was just OK for me.

It was a quick read, but there were so many plot holes and unrealistic scenes that I just rolled my eyes while reading. People are not just allowed to wander around a crime scene, nor would anyone who is close to a murder victim, and therefore a possible suspect, be allowed to tag along with a detective investigating the murder. Ridiculous.

The story was also a bit predictable, and the characters seemed all over the place. Paige seemed to swing from wildly independent to cowering in fear. I suspect some of the characters will be seen again in the sequel, otherwise I'm not sure why there was so much time spent on them? (Peter, Amy, etc )

What Comes Before Dawn A Mynart Mystery Thriller, my first read from author Addison Michael, was a 6-hour 38-minute/262-pageread that grabbed me and kept me reading until I finished it. “I received a free Audible copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review." The gifting of this book did not affect my opinion of it. I look forward to reading more from this author and in particular Dawn That Brings Death A Mynart Mystery Thriller, Book 2. Narrator Mira Williams reading of the book adds to its enjoyment. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018).

Excellent twist and turns in the mystery thriller. No one is exactly what Paige expected. As she discovers more about her mother and her life the more she learns she isn't who she thought she was. I liked the pace and how the discoveries kept changing where the story seemed to be heading. The book kept me interested and turning pages.

Poor Paige has a lot to come to terms with in this thriller which tests her understanding of the most important relationships in her life. Uncovering the history to her life is fascinating and the author does a great slow reveal. I’m not sure the paranormal element added much but it was certainly something a bit different.
