The Lone Captain

Rate this book
Captain Nemo’s son continues his own tales of adventure in The Lone Captain, a sequel to 2018’s The Nautilus Legacy and the second volume of The Nemo Chronicles. Inspired by the work of Jules Verne and written as a memoir, it will delight readers of the first volume as well as those new to the series.

Against a backdrop of Victorian-era political tensions and advances in science and technology, the Nautilus’ crew venture across the world’s oceans to further their twin missions of science and liberty by exploring shipwrecks, aiding the oppressed, and supporting freedom fighters. But everything changes for Nemo when a shocking naval crisis leads to confrontation with his most dangerous foe yet, a zealot whose actions could alter the international balance of power.

About the author

Lewis Crow

A life-long naval enthusiast, Lewis has been thrilled for as long as he can remember by stories true and fictional about ships and the men who crewed them.

The writing bug bit him as a child, and his first "creative efforts" were a series of two-paragraph ghost stories written on his family's typewriter. Over the years he became a fan of writers like Clive Cussler, Alastair MacLean, and of course Jules Verne, whose most famous character, Captain Nemo, he lovingly refashioned for a new generation of adventures. He lives in Texas with his family, bunches of LEGO, and shelves full of ship models.

Enjoyed the mix of fiction and history. Surprising that the Hunley, U.S.S. Alligator and Fenian Ram were not mentioned as examples of early submarines. Needs a better cover than seeing the back of a figure looking on a calm body of water.

I was very excited to find out that there was not just one, but two! sequels to ‘The Nautilus Legacy’ which I had read years ago. Thanks to a 3 month KU deal, I quickly borrowed the next two books, re-read ‘The Nautilus Legacy’ to refresh my memory and then swiftly moved on to ‘The Lone Captain’.

Book two picks up time wise directly after the action of ‘The Nautilus Legacy’ but before its epilogue of his retirement on the Isle of Skye. It fills in more of his time and explorations of the ocean’s wonders with his crew of redeemed convicts and friends. It also introduces a new formidable adversary creating havoc with the British fleet and endangering Nemo and the Nautilus’s very existence. Shaking his convictions to the core.

I enjoyed this second book even more than the first. I like them enough that I’ve gotten print copies ordered to add to my small collection of Captain Nemo and the Nautilus books.
