Once upon a time, I thought my stutter was the worst thing that ever happened to me. But now I know better.
Being held at gunpoint outranks a speech impediment any day.
Thankfully, my longtime crush Jayson Hernandez tackled that problem to the ground with those broad shoulders—the ones that make my stutter oh-so-much-worse.
As if he hasn’t held my heart in his strong, capable hands ever since I adored him from the shadows in high school. Or every day he comes into the coffee shop with a new date. Or each time he shoots me a friendly smile that makes my toes curl.
Then he proposes something so insane it’s my heart that starts to stutter. And I can’t turn him down, even though I want to.
Because there’s a part of me that still believes I’m Cinderella too.
And oh, how I want him to realize he’s Prince Charming after all.
Jayson:
My friends are the best guys anyone could ask for. They’ve always had my back.
Except . . . they’re pretty hard to impress.
The last thing I want to do is let them down, especially when the first of our group of four is getting married. I can’t show up to that wedding by myself, but I don’t have anyone to take with me that could gain their approval.
Enter Dagny Taylor.
She’s quiet, reads people like a book, and isn’t afraid to say it like it is—when I can get her to talk, that is. I’ve done some pretty wild things in my life, but now I’m about to do the craziest thing yet.
Because there’s a princess hiding beneath that thick armor, and I can’t wait to find her.
That is . . . if she’ll let me.
This is a clean, contemporary romance with sizzle and spice—but no sex scenes. Guaranteed bantering and happily ever after.
My world revolves around my husband (who is a major hottie), my precious kids, my Vizsla’s who act like children, and the mountains.
I wear hiking boots instead of heels when I need to feel powerful, and on a bad day, I love a weightlifting workout. Actually, I love it on a good day.
I don’t eat bread because my thyroid doesn’t like it, although there are days I miss it. Especially ciabatta. Sweet potatoes are kind of my thing. Cookies too.
I write because I never stopped.
Author of The Network Series, The Dragonmaster Trilogy, and The Coffee Shop Series.
I ended up really liking Dagny's character. After being introduced to her in the previous book, I wasn't sure how much I'd enjoy her book, but she was brave and strong, and had a well grounded character. I liked that this book was in a different setting from the previous books. It made it feel a little fresher, but still kept within a similar feel of the previous books. I think Dagny needed her story to develop outside of their small mountain town. I'm glad it wasn't a fake relationship story and that there was a decent amount of communication and straight forwardness. There is a little bit of biblical swearing and some steamy kisses, but it still fell within the realm of sweet and clean romance for me.
I just finished reading Shy Girl by Katie Cross and I loved it. Unlike some series, the Coffee Shop series Katie is writing just keeps getting better with each book. Shy Girl is the story of Dagny and Jayson, two people who have known each other since high school but never really knew each other until an incident at the coffee shop where she works. Held at gun point, Dagny is saved by policeman Jayson. That is just the beginning if their story and it gets so much better from there! I won't spoil it, but if you like clean romance with exotic locations (an island!!!) and a main female character who finds her voice (despite a well-written stutter) and stands up for herself multiple times when she didn't think she could, this one's for you. It's a beautiful love story, but more importantly, it's a beautiful coming into your own story. Romance lovers and girl power lovers and people with parental issues will all love Dagny and Jayson's love story. Worth a read, and then an immediate re-read!
This was so much fun! Dagny is a shy girl with a stutter and has been in love with Jayson (a sherrif) since her freshman year in high school. It's been ten years since then, but he's never seemed to really pay much attention to her until they are put in a dangerous situation. Next thing you know, there's a fake dating turned real at a destination wedding! You'll love that they actually communicate about their feelings, too! Definitely recommend! *closed-door, very little mild language.
I found this a very engaging story, as fun as you would expect with a clean romance, but packing an emotional punch sensitively delivered. I particularly appreciated that the main character has a barrier in her life that the hero does not fix, he just appreciated and accepted her in her entirety.
I loved this book as much as I have enjoyed the previous books of this series… Katie Cross is an amazing writer! You are hooked from the first lines and find yourself going in this amazing adventure with Dagny, you find yourself wanting to know more about this shy girl with every new chapter and when you least expect it, you’ve read it all in a couple of days… Thnx Katie for such lovely books!
In Fate of Storms, Blood of Zeus Book 3 by Meredith Wild and Angel Payne, Maximus Kane travels through the gates of Hell to fight Hades himself. Maximus shows great courage and strength throughout the book to rescue the love of his life. That is nothing compared to the courage and Strength Dagny Taylor must summon to face the man who has occupied her mind since she was a little girl. When given the opportunity to confront the father she has never met, Dagny shows strength and courage that makes Maximus seem weak.
Shy Girl is another example of Katie Cross’s ability to create characters who are not only endearing but also relatable. Although the latest installment of the Coffee Shop Girl series is a love story, the romance takes a back seat to the story of courage and overcoming obstacles to discover truth – no matter how much it may hurt.
Everyone has hurdles to cross. These hurdles seem like mountains to Dagny, who was born with a speech impediment. Her mother will not help fill the gaps where Dagny’s father is concerned. Accidentally discovering her father’s identity sends Dagny’s life on a whole new trajectory. She becomes obsessed with saving money to travel to Texas to meet her father – one of the wealthiest men in Texas.
While working at the Frolicking Moose Coffee Shop, Dagny watches Jayson Hernandez bring a different girl in for coffee every Friday night. He always arrives at the same time, sits at the same table, and orders the same drink, but with a different girl. Dagny and her friend Serafina cannot figure out if Jayson is a serial dater or just extremely picky. They also cannot understand why he will not as Dagny out. He is completely oblivious to the fact that Dagny has been in love with him since he was a senior and she was a freshman in high school.
Attending a destination wedding on a private island in the Caribbean with Jayson puts Dagny on a collision course for heartache. The only reason Jayson asked Dagny to go was so he would not be there alone when his ex-girlfriend showed up with someone else. The only reason she accepted was because Jayson’s best friend is marrying her half-sister, the sister who knows nothing about her.
Dagny goes as Jayson’s friend, not a fake girlfriend…until she meets Victoria. If ever a fictional character needed to be throat punched, it was Victoria. Will Jayson finally see what has been under his nose all these years, or will the man of Dagny’s dreams leave her with a broken heart? And what will happen when Jayson discovers the truth about why Dagny agreed to attend the wedding with him?
Shy Girl portrays someone with a speech impediment perfectly. When working with students who had a stutter, I found that the more anxious they became, the worse their stutter became. I also witnessed the cruelty of people like Victoria toward others who are different than they are. Singing will often help people communicate without a stutter. Mel Tillis was a perfect example of this, and Dagny Taylor discovers this as well. Katie Cross goes above and beyond to ensure that what she writes, although fictional, is true to the image she wants to portray. The reader can sympathize with the characters and their struggles and becomes invested in these characters. I literally cried at the end of this book (not the first time Katie Cross has made me cry). When a book makes me cry, that means that it was good. It was not just good, it was great. I felt like I knew Dagny and Jayson and their friends. Quite honestly, I am ready to move to Pineville and enjoy the mountain life. (I currently live in a beach town.)
A cute little romance story! The author did a great job with both the main heroine and hero characters. I was hate when people think shy=weak and unable to stand up for oneself. The author was very good in not falling into this trap. Overall I liked the interactions between the two main characters and the plot of the story although simple was done well.
The only reason this wasn't a higher rating for me was because of the side characters. I *hated* the Vik character and even Bastian, I was not a fan of. Grady to me was okay. But these best friends, the "Merry Idiots" just didn't seem to click. To me it was too forced to join these different personalities into one group. I didn't jive with it at all. The one major thing that frustrated me about them was that yes, they're all at different points in their lives, but they're meant to be 'best friends'. Why would you not be happy for your best friend? Constantly throughout the book this Vik guy kept moaning about Grady getting married, being a real downer for his so-called-friend's big event, which Grady himself was super excited for. What close friend would do that? Why did Jayson or Bastian or even Grady himself, not tell Vik to stop being selfish and STFU? You would think that if these 4 are so different in personalities, they would have done things the others would never thought to do and make choices that the others wouldn't and therefore, these type of conflicts would have happened long ago in their long friendship. Surely, they would have found the maturity to realise that they should be supportive.
But okay, mini-rant over. Overall, if you want a non-annoying, sweet, shy heroine and an equally cute but slightly clueless hero, this is a good book for it. I personally won't be reading any more in the series though.
When I initially saw this book, I have to admit I was intrigued. I know this isn't the first book that features a stuttering main character nor will it be the last, that being said, though, I felt inclined to read a romance that featured that. One that took me to a different world.
As a person who stutters myself, I figure a part of the reason was to see if the author did it justice, and I'd say she did. Though a little bit more fluency would've been realistic, especially in certain moments. But then again everyone is different, so who am I to say otherwise. The fact that everyone was automatically accepting of the speech impediment without any major reaction was a little unrealistic, it was nice to remove yourself from the real world.
I like the characters and their chemistry, their relationship was very sweet. I only hoped that a bit more was explored apart from the surface level so I could connect with them a little more. But I guess because this book is on the shorter side, that's probably the reason.
What I didn't like: *mild spoiler below* The fact that the main character has to kiss an ex to see if he has gotten over her is a BIG red flag and it was almost enough for me to be turned off of an otherwise good story. I also wasn't particular fond of how Dagny treated Jayson as if he was God's gift to man and how much he revelled in it. Sure I love confidence, but something about his, in those scenarios, was a little annoying.
All in all, I liked it and hope to read other books with similar storylines.
I love how Katie writes about real and deep relatable issues, while the reader is surrounded by fun, beauty, mystery and a full cast of delicious characters that invite you into their worlds of all the feels in Shy Girl... Katie allows the characters their voice, space to be brave and scared at the same time and all while bringing that page turning magic into every story in this series... I was left fully satisfied with the outcome when I finished Shy Girl, yet I was conflicted because I didn't want it to end... If you start this series with Shy Girl, it will not ruin the experience of the books that came before but be warned you will fall in love with more than the protagonists upon a luxury tropical island and like me and many others you will want more. Best part about finding a great series is finding out more books are already available, and it has yet to end... woohoo! Bring on Wild Child!!!
I love reading the sweet romances by Katie Cross. They are full of adventure, sometimes a little danger, but always joy and love. Shy GIrl is the newest in the Coffee Shop Series, but can easily be read as a stand alone. Dagny, a bit of a wallflower, has had her eye on Jayson for years, yet Jayson, caught up in his own adventurous world, has only just recently noticed her. In Fighter, we learn that Dagny has a stutter, which together with her shyness keeps her from any conversation with Jayson. After an incident at the Coffee Shop, where she now works in Shy GIrl, Jayson is jolted into finally really noticing her. I love the moments when people awaken to others with respect, interest, and even awe.
I originally gave this book four stars because as a shy girl filled with social anxiety myself, I felt that Dagny did not fully reflect how very hard it is to willingly enter into a social setting with so many people unknown or only acquaintances. However, as I wrote this review, I had an aha moment: I learned from Dagny that being shy and scared do not necessarily go hand in hand. I love this character’s courage, confidence, and self-respect.
I hope we get to see a lot more of Jayson and Dagny in future books!
I loved this book, which is no surprise since I seem to love everything Katie Cross writes. While it's #5 in the Coffee Shop series, it could easily be read as a standalone (but read the other books too because they're all wonderful !!). The main character, Dagny, is shy and also has a stutter. Her stutter was described in such a graceful way that I could easily imagine myself struggling with a speech impediment. There were characters to love in this book (especially 4 longtime friends dubbed the "Merry Idiots") and other characters to hate. The love story was engrossing, and when both the main characters stood up for themselves, I cheered at their fierceness and growth. I couldn't put this book down and hope we see more of these characters in future books.
I absolutely loved this story. Katie’s characters are so believable and by the end of the book they feel like you’re reading about your best friends.
Dagny is a strong and independent woman. The twist and turns in this plot are are some of her finest. Dagny has a secret that she can’t tell and a desire to meet her biological father. One thing leads to another and she gets her chance. When he tries to make her sign a non disclosure agreement, she puts him in his place and refuses. Hernandez has unresolved issues as well with an old flame that he had to resolve.
There are several more subplots but long story short, this was a fabulous story and one that makes you want more. In my opinion, that is the sign of a great story. Always leave them wanting more 🤗
Dagny continues to work in the coffee shop and drool over Deputy Jayson. She has drooled over him for years and years but he doesn't really know that she exists. She is also still trying to save up the money to go and find her biological father. He is the richest man in Texas. Out of the blue, Jayson invites her to a wedding to keep his abuela from trying to matchmake. The kicker for Dagney is that the wedding is for the daughter of her father. A parade of girls. A woman. A gun. A robbery. Weekly dates. Pallets. Lots of pallets. A wedding. A strange request. A beautiful island. A woman scorned. Friends. Yoga. Surf lessons. A searing kiss in the ocean. A father. An unwilling father. An agreement. A beautiful bride. What??? A wedding. Ellie is back.
Dagny and Jayson... where do I start! This was a fun read for a few reasons. First, we've only had a brief glance into the crush that Dagny has carried for Jayson since High School. Second, Jayson is a yummy cop that has made multiple appearances in this series and it's time for him to find his love. Third, because it adds an amazingly fun beach vibe to our series that has been based in this gorgeous rustic mountain town. Lastly (well maybe not lastly because I'm sure there are many more reasons that I don't have time to mention) because it introduces up to some more yummy characters that I can't wait to find out more about! This book made me cry and laugh and yearn for a beach vacation!!!!
My heart is melting! I loved the way this book unfolded, especially the way Dagny had more than one reason for agreeing to the trip. I was impressed by her level of dignity for herself and others. She always took the high road, even when others swooped so low to make fun of her speech impediment. My favorite part is the way she asked someone if her speech impediment made them uncomfortable. Way to squash that, and make them think about how they treat others! The love story between Dagny and Jayson is just so sweet and dreamy. Everyone deserves love and belonging! I found myself rooting for both Dagny and Jayson throughout this book! A million heart emojis for this clean romance!
Dagny is braver than I will ever be. I appreciate how her stutter was written. I appreciate that Jayson encouraged her to come out of her shell. That he didn't care about her stutter. He wasn't embarrassed or ashamed. He was proud as fuck of her. It was adorable. What I didn't appreciate was that Jayson kept kicking himself because Dagny had always been there, right on his periphery, in the same small town, and he missed the opportunity of being with her longer. Dude, just stop. Maybe you weren't ready for her yet. Maybe you had to become the you that you are now in order to deserve Dagny. Just saying. It's happening now. Be glad. Otherwise, cute and sweet. Steamy but not explicit. Always a fun time stopping by Pineville, USA.
I didn’t dislike this. I liked that Dagny was strong and not pushed around. She said what she wanted and didn’t let other people intimidate her. As a character, overall, I found her likable enough.
I think the romance just fell flat for me. Jayson just wasn’t giving me “competent MMC” vibes. It just felt like he was there, but wasn’t actually part of the story. He came off as unsure / hesitant / passive sometimes and I wanted a bit more from him. Life and love seemed to happen to him, but he didn’t have all that much to do with it.
I am glad that I read a new author and I liked enough aspects of this book to try some more by her.
The right amount of cliché. This was a short reading, but not less charming and amusing. Our protagonist it's a very shy girl that has a speech impediment, and she actually has a great development in the book. The couple was very cute, charming, I rooted for them, so sweet. The ending was perfect, I was already expecting our classic stupid breakup, but the author got me fooled, our heroine finally learn how to stand up for herself! It was so satisfying to read, the author didn't stick to the recipe for a romcom, that's getting overused, but created a story of her own with some elements.
You’ll fall even more in love with Dagny through this story. Her character really grows and how she stands up for herself just wowed me. I hope they are returning characters for future books.
The Coffee Shop Series are fun reads! A splash of romance. I really enjoy Katie Cross’ writing style with the chapters going back and forth between the two main love interests for each of the books. It’s fun to read the perspective from both the female and male.
A beautiful story about friendship, true love, shyness and facing your fears. Dangny is been in love with Jayson since the first time she saw him in high school. But he never noticed her. Now he has just invited her to his best friend’s wedding in a paradise island. Will Dangny accept the offer and help him face his former girlfriend? Or will she have another motivation to attend the weeding? Being brave is the only way for Dangny to happiness and love. A really great story
Shy Girl was incredible! I did not want this book to end! I loved being a part of Dagny’s journey and fell in love with her character! She is definitely one of my favorites from this series! I can’t say enough good things about this book because I just loved it! And I don’t want to say too much because I don’t want to spoil it for anyone reading this review. But I will say, I couldn’t get enough of this book! It is a new favorite!
I love love loved this one! What a joy to watch Dagney dominate in love and life! I love how strong she is and how kind Hernandez is. The backdrops of the tropical island was a lovely summer escape! What I wouldn't give to be whisked away for an island weekend. Swoon! The Merry Idiots were such a delightfuladdition to the story too. The pranksters were so fun to get to know and I hope to see more of them!
It was a good read and not as predictable as I thought it would be. Not a 4-star read, though, because I found the ending lacking - not in the romance part, but in the other very important story arc. Or at least what was provided as the final point felt rather anticlimactic to me. So, in other words, I do not regret reading this story, but I am not planning on trying the other books in the series.
What a sweet story! I love the way Katie writes her female characters with so much girl power. We all have our weaknesses and Dagny's is her stutter (in her eyes) and her feelings for jayson. You will find yourself cheering her on as faces the large obstacles in her life. I love how strong she is. Will Jayson open his eyes in time to really see her? What choice will he make when an old flame pops up? I loved this book and you will too!
This series just keeps getting better!!! Dagny is endearing and strong. Jayson and Dagny take us on a journey to an island wedding where Dagny faces her fears and Jayson realizes what he didn't notice all along. And the band of Merry Idiots are charming and funny. This book had me feeling all the feelings along with the characters and I couldn't put it down until I was finished.
Could it get better? I didn't think so after reading Fighter. But it was SOOO swoony. I loved Jayson and his slow recollections of Dagny and their slow burn. I also loved the no-nonsense of Dagny. She isn't going to beat around a bush to get an answer. Just tell it how it is. I think more MC's should be like this!
I can SOOO relate to the shy Dagny. She’s intelligent, thoughtful, driven, meticulous, honest, and wears her heart on her sleeve. Her love interest is completely blind to her, until she’s not! It’s a wonderful story of eyes opening up, of dreams coming true, and reality being better than dreams.
I love Dagny. She is so sweet. And Jayson is adorable. His obliviousness to her being right in front of his face for so long was almost hysterical. Especially when his “merry band of idiot” friend seemed to know her and how bad she was at hiding her affection. They were so adorable together. I’m so glad she gained her much needed courage. She kicks butt.
