He did gift me with immortality, super strength, and a complexion to die for, so I suppose I shouldn't complain.

I faint at the sight of blood.

All I wanted was to have the time of my life with my bestie at Mardi Gras. But you know what they say…

It's all fun and games until someone wakes up dead.

USA Today Bestselling Author Carrie Pulkinen has always been fascinated with things that go bump in the night. Of course, when you grow up next door to a cemetery, the dead (and the undead) are hard to ignore. Pair that with her passion for writing and her love of a good happily-ever-after, and becoming a paranormal romance author seems like the only logical career choice.

Before she decided to turn her love of the written word into a career, Carrie spent the first part of her professional life as a high school journalism and yearbook teacher. She loves red wine and chocolate, and in her free time, she likes to read, take pictures, and spend time with her family.

This is a NON-SPOILER REVIEW of the New Orleans Nocturnes Collection by Carrie Pulkinen. This set includes the first three books in the series, License To Bite, Shift Happens and Life's A Witch. I read these as individual release titles and absolutely loved them! Loaded with charming characters that read like life long friends, the snark and humor will have you holding your sides. A great anytime get away into a wonderfully immersive New Orleans vacation!

The plots in this collection almost feel like speed dating… which I’ve totally done before and didn’t just pull that example out of nowhere. You’re dropped into a world from the PoV of a character or two, they’re given a predicament to solve and have a month ~ to do so. I was quickly interested, as I found the world-building to be interesting. The plot McGuffin’s are easily the most forgettable aspect of these stories. The real appeal is the characters and their interactions. Despite their altogether brief time-on-page…. or time-in-ears?, they’re pretty enjoyable and memorable. They’re all oozing with personality, character, and charm.

I found their interactions to be amusing. It moves at the typical romance story speed, where 2 characters go from barely knowing each other to being in love in 20 minutes. The majority of the plot is world-building, so the romance at the end does feel a bit rushed, almost like an afterthought.

The innuendo and the Twilight references had me chuckling. However, I find the references in book 1 to be obnoxious to a degree. I imagine they could be a bit annoying for somebody who’s never read the series and has no idea what’s being referenced and I feel the Twilight references might date the book. I guess it depends on when the book is set; or the staying power of the Twilight series of all things. It ironically helped to humanize the vampire characters. They felt like real people, with believable dialogue who actually share a world with the rest of us, and not cardboard cutouts in an earth-like parallel universe like so many other poorly written characters in novels are.

If you’re interested in some bite-sized, casual romance comedy stories, I’d definitely suggest these books for a read. While I personally prefer adult romance, I still enjoyed my time in this world and with these characters and I wouldn’t be opposed to revisiting future stories in this world. I enjoyed the crossover of characters between books, which added to the believability of the world. It’s always nice to see that characters still exist when the plot isn’t centered on their life. I wish more authors would do that.

I found the narration to be decent overall. While I found some of her male voices to be lacking. There were a couple of times it sounded like the same character was having a conversation with himself. Despite that, I also felt like she was putting a genuine effort in and I enjoyed the narration otherwise. The narration is honestly what helped bring the characters to life so well. Their voices all enhanced their personality traits and quirks and made them all more believable.

***This review is for book and audiobook***
The New Orleans Nocturnes Collection 1 is a collection of three paranormal rom coms that had me laughing out loud over and over. All of the stories featured a younger woman and an older man. All of the men are paranormals. The collection included the books:

License to Bite – Jane and Ethan
Best friends Jane and Sophie are out drinking in New Orleans celebrating Mardi Gras when they meet vampires, Ethan and his sire, Gaston. Ethan was immediately enthralled with Jane because he thought she was the reincarnated version of his former fiancé, and he wanted to turn her into a vampire. Ethan gets his opportunity when Jane is accidentally run over by a truck and is about to die. Jane, Sophie and Gaston help Ethan battle Constable Watson and the vampire authorities.

Shift Happens – Sophie and Trace
Sophie, Jane, Ethan and Garson go to a Halloween party and Sophie is smitten with a man she meets a man named Trace, who accidentally bites her. Sophie doesn’t know at first that Trace is a werewolf. Trace is a detective from the Red Wolf Pack in town trying to find his missing friend Jackson and the witch that is causing the pack wolves to spontaneously shift. They all become friends with a witch named Crimson who is having trouble casting spells. Sophie and Trace become mates.

Life’s A Witch – Crimson and Mike
Crimson is not a good witch because she keeps messing up spells. Crimson gets in trouble with the Council of Elders of the New Orleans Coven of Witches and is threatened with being kicked out of her coven. She ends up challenging the priestess, Rosemary, and their challenge is a test of skills in one month. Crimson meets Mike, a demon, who becomes her boyfriend and helps her.

I enjoyed the characters and the use of New Orleans, as the locale for the stories. I appreciated the use of familiar N.O. foods, Mardi Gras, and the mention of familiar landmarks. The chemistry between Jane and Ethan, Sophie and Trace, and Crimson and Mike crackled off the page. The books have lots of humor, an interesting and engaging storyline, and fun endings. There were so many funny moments that it was hard to say what my favorites were. The author did a wonderful job creating an interesting plot and characters, and excellent world building. The narrator had a pleasant voice and was enjoyable to listen to because the audio quality was exceptional. The narrator’s voice quality and character distinction, pacing and rhythm, and emotional delivery were all on point. I loved the different accents, and thought the excellent narration added to the experience for me. I highly recommend this awesome collection.

License to Bite
Five comedic stars for my first vampire romance. I needed a vampire romance for a monthly reading challenge in Claire Kingsley's Alpha Ever After reading group. This book came recommended by other readers as a lighter vampire romance, making it perfect for my first.
Ethan has been undead for 25 years when he meets Jane and mistakes her for his reincarnated ex-fiancée. By the time he figures out he is mistaken, he is stuck with Jane forever.
I felt for poor Ethan as he adjusted to his new reality with the talkative Jane. He was sweet and grumpy, which I loved. Jane is a force to be reckoned with. I loved her confidence and her savvy in social situations. Together they make an extraordinary team. I love that they are drawn together physically, and their time together was intimate and hot. The setting of New Orleans is perfect for this series of books about beings with supernatural powers. This book is written in third person from dual POV. This was my first book by this author, but I will definitely be reading more.

Shift Happens
This werewolf shifter book is # 2 in the New Orleans Nocturnes series. Trace and witch descendant Sophie have an instant attraction that is unstoppable. Unfortunately complicated by an accidental bite and a spell gone awry, Trace has been sent to investigate Sophie's role and to head off a war between the werewolves and the witches. Their attraction to each other is intense. There is plenty of humor as many mystical beings come together to find solutions. I found this book very amusing and I really enjoyed it.

Life’s A Witch
Book 3 follows witch, Crimson, as she falls for half-demon, Mike. There are some seriously funny moments. The devil is hilarious. I love how Crimson gains confidence. I really love Mike and his guilt over his job. I love that Crimson goes from bad to bada$$. I love that they are both willing to sacrifice for love. The funny twists, and the help from her friends made this a very enjoyable, quick read.

Individually I rated two of these stories five stars and one of them four so I'm rounding up at five stars. I like Pulkinen's style and humor and I enjoy this paranormal Ne Orleans she's created. There is a touch of mystery, adventure and romance as well as some sexual content. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Hollie Jackson. She's got a pleasant, good voice and she differentiates the characters well. Some of it I listened to at 1.50x speed and she was clear and audible even so. It was a good listening experience.

In Licence to Bite, Jane is a travel blogger and the daughter of a governor, visiting New Orleans with her friend Sophie. After a traffic accident, grumpy vampire Ethan saves her life, sort of, by turning her into a vampire. But she faints at the sight of blood so this makes learning to feed problematic for her. There's a draconian inspector in town who really wants to stake her if she can't get her licence to bite.

In Shift Happens, Jane's friend Sophie is an aspiring witch who doesn't seem to be able to get any spells to work. On a night out, she gets bitten by a werewolf and suddenly needs to shave more often. She brings home a dog who turns into a man, and Trace tells her that the wolf pack thinks she's responsible for a curse upon their pack.

Life's a Witch is a fun paranormal comedy about Crimson Oliver who is not a very competent witch and got in trouble with the higher ups. Things soon go from bad to worse when she meets a recovering demon named Mike who accidentally damns her to Hell. I loved the story and it kept me engrossed all the way through.

I got the audiobook from storyoriginapp and this is a voluntary review

License to Bite
Jane and Sophie are in New Orleans when they are taken home by 2 vampires as Sophie is too drunk to get home. Ethan puts a mark on Jane marking her off limits to other Vampires but he doesn’t realise he’s put the mating mark. As Jane can sense him she follows him and is run over and left for dead so Ethan turns and that’s where the fun starts. Jane isn’t what he expected she sassy and takes no crap from anyone and is not afraid to tell them what she thinks and that includes the Vampire council. Loved listening to this Jane is so funny and she’s brought to life by Hollie Jackson’s narration.

Shift Happens
I’m so loving this series it’s entertaining and fun. This book follows Sophie who is Janes BFF from book one . Sophie has as much sass as Jane and when she meets Trace under weird circumstances they can’t deny the feelings between them.

Life’s a Witch
Another great listen with The Nocturnes of NOLA this time Crimson has to battle it out with evil witch Rosemary or lose her magic and leave NOLA. She meets Mike a demon and accidentally sells her soul to the devil now they both have to rush to save her soul. I laughed out loud several times especially at the Devil went down to Georgia reference and Hollie Jackson is just perfect for these books.

Jane and her best friend Sophie are in New Orleans for Mardi Gras. on their first night Jane Meet Ethan. On her second night he saves he life sort of. Jane is now a vampire, who faints at the sight of blood, This is a funny romantic story, It has it all.
Sophie and Jane came to New Orleans for Mardi Gras and now live there perminantly. She belives she will find her magic and love there.. But when she is bitten by a werewolf it looks like her life is going to takes turn for the furry. This is a very funny story.
Crimson is a witch, her spells tend to misfire more than they work. After her latest mishap she ends up in front of the council of elders. The leader of the council Rosemary has had it in for Crimson for a long time and see's an opportunity to strip Crimson of her powers and exile her.
Crimson challenges Rosemary for leadership of the council in a last ditch effort to stay a witch.
Mike is a devils advocate in recovery. He is late with his monthly payment to the devil. So when the devil offers him a new deal. He is persuaded to take it all he has to do is get a witch to become the devils new assistant .

The best paranormal rom/com reads / listens ever! I am hooked on this author and this series. Each book is well written and flows perfectly from one to the other. Epilogues provide the hints as to what each new book will focus on. First let me start by saying the women in these reads are fun, independent and strong. Pulkinen does a wonderful job of providing witty banter, sweet romance and some steamy chemistry and balances them all out perfectly. I also appreciate that each read focus' on a different race of paranormal - book 1, main characters are Jane and Ethan and we're introduced to vampires; book 2, main characters are Sofie and Trace and we're introduced to werewolves and book 3, main characters are Crimson and Mike and we're introduced into the world of witches. Narration by Jackson is stellar! As these books take place in the fabulous city of New Orleans - a southern accent is a must and Jackson delivers an authentic sounding southern accent - while bringing each character to life - well done!

This book was given to me for free at my request and I voluntarily provided this review.

This book is recommended for readers 18+ due to adult content.

This review is for the Audible version of the book.

These are three pretty funny and entertaining stories. The setting of New Orleans adds a lot of ambience. There are a great number of supernaturals represented here, which sometimes adds to the funny. Each couple has a very individual story. While there is plenty of crass humor and sexy times, I really didn't feel any fantastic chemistry between the couples. This is probably a combination of the comedy aspect and the narrator's performance.

The narrator's southern accent is very strong, which could be expected based on the location. It works great for her female characters. Her male characters come off as pretty monotone. I think that's because she has a naturally high voice and when she tries to lower her register she loses a lot of lee way in inflection. This makes the men feel less emotional and the sex scenes a little cringey.

Paranormal Fantasy Book Set for Adults

Parents: This is Not for kids or teens. R rated - There is quite a bit of bad language in these books including f-bombs. The violence is normal fantasy levels, adult drinking, hangovers and the sexual content is pretty heavy: lots of adult bedroom humor and pretty hard to miss insinuations and puns, along with pretty detailed bedroom scenes.

Beyond the warnings these will definitely appeal to the paranormal adult crowd. It has the benefit of 3 books for 1 credit or price of one book. Book one is vampire based, two shifter, and three is a witchy story. If a fun, comedic, paranormal, fantasy, romance, adventure with a dirtier side sounds intriguing then you'll enjoy this set.

The narrator does a great job, has good differentiation between characters, and is fun to listen to.

This audiobook collection was an absolute delight. Each story in the series delivered a perfect blend of paranormal mischief, sharp wit, and romance. The narrator brought the characters to life with infectious energy, capturing the sass and snark that made the humor shine (something that might not land as well on the page alone). The rom-com elements were on point and consistently balanced across all three books. I laughed out loud at banter and there was just the right amount of heat. The vibrant New Orleans setting adds its own unique flair, becoming a character in itself amid all of the supernatural shenanigans. With the clever chaos and the steamy moments, this collection offers a fun spin on the paranormal genre. It’s equal parts hilarious, heartwarming, and spicy. It’ll definitely leave you wanting to read the rest of the series.

3.5 good stories, with a Cozy approach to the big easy, but distracting narrator. PNR 17+ For language, sex, and mild violence. I woud choose this as an ebook with TTS turned on if needed.
The setting is a place of rich history and varied cultures, too bad the narrator/voice actor didn't take this into account when choosing to read "in dilect" as part of (or lack of) each charactor's persona to set them apart from each other. There is no sandardized "southern speech setting" just as I'm sure people living above the Mason/Dixon line can tell each other apart just by opening their mouths. This could have been part of the voice picture painted along with reading the punctuation as provided but instead fell short.

I loved reading/listening to this book collection!

This Collection features the first 3 books in the New Orleans Nocturnes series. I had previously read the 3rd book but not the 1st and 2nd book.

The entire collection was entertaining! I have previously noted in my other reviews of books in this series that Carrie Pulkinen delivers on the humour, the characters, and the storyline. This collection was no exception! I love each book, and the settings were great!

(Audio Review)
Narrated by Hollie Jackson, I thought the narration was also great! I loved the accent and I felt that the narration really had me immersed in the story! I highly recommend this audio version of this book!

Audiobook: I was entertained by the three stories which made up this collection. I thought all the stories were fun and contained some amusing dialogue and events. I appreciated the different paranormal beings which populated the tales. Although each story featured a romance between different couples, I was glad that the stories were unusual enough to make them memorable. I thought Hollie Jackson's narration was great, and her performance kept my attention. I was given a copy of the audiobook. I volunteered, without financial gain, to post this review which reflected my honest opinions regarding this audiobook.

I really love Hollie Jackson as a narrator. Her inflection in just the right places add to the humor of the story and makes it even more entertaining. When I read myself, the voices all sound the same in my mind. I love the way she changes her voice for each character.

The three stories are so good! Much of the dialog is hilarious. I found myself laughing, smiling, and smirking so much. I can't wait to continue the series!

If you're an audiobook lover, I cannot recommend this highly enough! If you're more of a reader, I highly recommend grabbing this! You'll find yourself gobbling up the entire series.

I enjoyed this audiobook. Good world building and characters. I loved the paranormal setting, the quirky characters, the humor and banter. Each story was a different adventure. These were my firsts from this author. I listened to this collection narrated by Hollie Jackson. I like Southern accents- but am far from an expert. And surprisingly, I don't have too many audiobooks with characters who have that accent. Holly's sounded fine to me, thought I didn't care for the British one. I liked her female voices. Her male ones were okay. Overall enjoyable to listen to. This was my first time listening to this narrator as well.

Overall: 4 stars
Performance: 4 stars
Story: 4 stars

I absolutely loved reading the first part of this series. I enjoy standalones that make up a series. I loved the characters and that the story kept me hooked from the beginning. I couldn't put it down! I thought that the world-building was great and that the pacing was good. I like stories that keep me on the edge of my seat.
Also love the occasional hot werewolf too! XD I can't wait to read more on this series. I love paranormal romance; it's always been a favorite of mine.
This is more for 18+ readers, as there is some content that may not be suitable for some readers.

Two out of three isn't bad

The first two stories were good. Interesting stories, good love scenes, enough supernatural stuff to keep my attention. The third story though went way too far. Having a demon chatting with the devil just seemed silly. I couldn't take the story seriously. I presume the author just ran out of ideas. Too bad since she did well with the first 2 stories.

A treat

A human turned vamp, a witch turned werewolf, and a witch whose magic keeps glitching, sound like the beginning of a bad joke. But these three females will do whatever it takes to have their chosen mate. Of course, that couldn't be easy and mistakes are made, some of those quite humorous, but with the mistakes made, can they still get and keep their man?
