I never asked to be a witch, but as careers go, at least it comes with magical perks.
Who knew a person could almost die from drinking? I found out the hard way when I woke up in a hospital and a nurse informed me I was legally dead for a few minutes. Shocking, but not as much as the fact I returned different.
I can see things, but it’s what I can do that has people interested in me.
There’s Sonja, a strange woman with powers who appoints herself my teacher.
Anakin, the mysterious and super hot dude, who owns a pastry shop of all things catering to weird folk.
Leslie, my furry-tailed coworker and only friend.
And then there’s the bad guys determined to get their grubby hands on me.
I’m not special. Just a woman trying to clean up her life and actually plan for a future. Will I have time to atone for my many sins before my luck runs out?
Hello, my name is Eve Langlais and I am an International Bestselling author who loves to write hot romance, usually with werewolves, cyborgs or aliens .
I should warn you, I have a twisted imagination and a sarcastic sense of humor something I like to let loose in my writing. While well known for my shifter stories, I am also extremely partial to aliens, the kind who like to abduct humans and then drive them insane...with pleasure. Or do you like something a little darker, more serious? Then check out my cyborgs whose battle with humanity have captivated readers worldwide.
A lot of very interesting ideas and concepts but way too short to do any of them justice. The length necessitates that everything kind of just resolves itself. There is no time to work out any of the conflicts with any kind of nuance. It's a unique mix but built mostly from common tropes without any depth.
This might be a lot more fun for less seasoned readers but for an old bookworm, this was just lukewarm.
Short and a bit formalistic, but it actually manages to tell a pretty decent story in just 4 hours. That surprised me in a good way. And it has a good narrator!
It's not a very deep story, but I found it entertaining. The main character is at times really unpleasant and unlikeable - and stubborn as a mule - but she manages to turn things around. (AND get the hot dude, of course, never doubt that.)
If you're looking for a quick and short dip in the urban fantasy pool - I did - then this is a decent story. You basically know what you're going to get if you read a lot of similar stories, but if you're like me and wanted something just like that, then this is perfect. It scratches that itch and you'll have a good enough time.
So I had to check again to remind myself who the author of this book was, cuz it did not read like an Eve Langlais story. First 12 chapters were a self pity that could have been condensed into one chapter. Story did not even get interesting until chapter 19, and that was at 75%. Unfortunately this was a miss for me. Finished book as I have really liked this author’s previous stories, however I will not auto-preorder liked I did with this one.
I really, really like this book. What happens when a college student drinks herself to death, to only revive into a witch by an unknown entity. Faye was an alcoholic and addicted to drugs when that fateful night happened. When her mother tells her she can not move back home after she was expelled from college for her has behavior. She eventually is found by an Urban Witch named Sonia who cast a spell looking for a new witch. Her life is about to change in more ways than she ever expected. Wow! This book was so exciting.
I thought the issue of addiction was handled with realistic compassion, not hiding the selfishness but also not acting like addiction is purely a moral failing. The length was good for the story, and the pacing was great. I feel like this is a plot the author had a solid handle on, so it could have been longer or shorter and she still would have made it work. Romance is barely even the B plot imo. Even though this is a standalone, it is still urban fantasy rather than paranormal romance. It does have a happy ending, but set expectations for the correct genre. I know Langlais is well known for PNR, but this is not one. My rating is more for the mechanics than the plot. With the type of story this is, it's not exactly there for major twists (tho the one at the end was fun for me). Readers know what to expect in the broad strokes. But the plotting and the pacing matched really well, flowed smoothly, and didn't really have hanging threads. Which I appreciated. I've read a lot of Langlais and I have been enjoying experiencing her growth in her writing. This is possibly the most solid I've seen from her and I'm not surprised.
Fae was, well how to put this...rather nasty, a real piece of work . Foulmouthed, quick to conclusions, aggressive, a raging alcoholic, drug uses. Only thinking of herself. F everyone else. Even after having died for a second she is her nasty self. But, things change.
Is the lack of drugs and drinks making her see freaky beings? Why are they calling her a witch?!
Yes, somehow she turned into a witch, and when she is at her last resort, she accepts help and guidance and begin to calm down and accept her new powers. I even like her at the end.
Also, that one thing in the end, I am really curios. I hope there will be more so I can understand who granted her these powers.
I liked it. It was short, fast paced and kept throwing punches at her.
Good narration. It would not be easy voicing Fae, she is a woman of many faces. And you could really hear the change in Fae as the story progressed
It wasn't until about 65% in when I thought, "huh, this story is just getting started now" when I looked at the page count- 136 pages. I don't bother with novellas. What's the point? And this book supports my theory. You can't fit a full blown story, with a romance and UF world-building into a novella. This book couldn't do it. The final 30% is so rushed it was just laughably bad. It's like someone told the author, hurry up, we have to leave for dinner in 30 mins, and she just typed up any old ending. I gave it the extra star because it had something interesting near the start (even if the MC was incredibly annoying), but it was a waste of reading time.
I listened to this via the Libby app through my library. The narrator, Krys Janae, did a great job. I SO appreciate authors who get their books into audio and into libraries!
4stars from me means I enjoyed the book! cons: The beginning was a little slow and the end a little rushed. pros: I was invested in the characters. I wanted to see Faye change, develop magic, make amends and maybe start a romance. There's a cute magical sidekick, interesting powers and the beginnings of world building that I hope will be continued in later books.
I expected to be back into the world of misfits. I wasn't back in the world. It's a standalone novel. My mistake as the cover just said misfit series to me. I didn't click with the character, though. I hoped I would, but I just couldn't. Actually, I couldn't click with any of the characters and have forgotten most of their names. There is suddenly some steamy talk, and the build-up is hot...then the scene is just, well sneeze and miss it. It's an easy read but falls short of the other books by this author. Maybe if it was longer, but for a short story, it's ok. 3.4 stars
Well i enjoyed the magic and how fast paced the story was but i didnt enjoy the rudeness and just offensive actions and words of our main character.
Aside from all that though i did enjoy the path of the story and the way the monsters/magic were.
It did on some occasions read like fanfiction which well sometimes can be fun and fine was not in this one... It was more rushed and not like other girls troped along with a hint of bad boy magic... Not my kinda thing...
I could not even read any more after the second chapter. The amount that gets skipped and then added in "oh i saw a green thing on the bus" that ain't normal for a normal human to see so it feels like it was kind of necessary to add that in. Plus the entire character is so bland and dull has no feelings attached to the main character. Anyway very unfortunate book in my slump right now i was hoping for something to pull me out.
Now that was a sneaky twist to put in at the last second! Before that, this story had me guessing what was going to happen next, and how things would play out. I was learning the new way of the world along with our heroine, as she discovered what her new life was made up of, and how things worked. Great story, wonderful premise, and interesting characters!
Not so much a novel, more a set of ideas for a story. Having to say that a fantasy novel is implausible is unusual but there are more miracles than magic here.
Good narrator. This is one of those shorter ones that could have been expanded but definitely worth a listen. I don't know if this is a one off or a series but it really could be one
A great little read about a rough around the edges girl who is given witchy powers. Super cute, I couldn’t put it down and ended up reading it in one sitting!
