One would expect that defeating the Demon Lord is enough to save the world, but it seems that Rila left a bit of a power vacuum in her wake. Saving humanity might not be terribly normal for poor Roland, but surely helping his half cat, half demon lover counts as something regular?

Sometimes a book is only as good as its cast and in manga that frequently refers to its female cast specifically, as the men are woefully underwritten (unless shojo). Roland is not a self-insert necessarily, but he’s precariously close and definitely out of the ‘invincible, does it all’ stereotype that befouls many similar premises.

Those parts of this are really a bit of a drag, now that the novelty has practically worn the premise down to the nub, but there are a couple of things that make this worth sticking around for.

One is the genuinely sweet relationship between Rila and Roland. Don’t think too hard about the fact that she’s been collared by him, but they have a very obvious fondness for one another and it’s some of the strongest stuff in here. Having just read The Girl I Saved On The Train Turned Out To Be My Childhood Friend, by the same author, I think this is where their talent lies.

Of course, Rila is the true star of this book, her status being destroyed having done absolutely nothing for her haughtiness where other women are concerned and watching her going at it with Roland’s coworker is brilliant fun - it’s certainly the funniest use of the word ‘virgin’ I’ve seen lately.

The other thing this series is still doing well is being ridiculously sex positive. Look, it’s obvious this is being done so Roland can bed as many cast members as possible, even with Rila’s permission, but it still works to see people being attracted to one another and then acting on it for once in a blue moon.

So many (okay, mainstream, I’m not counting hentai) manga are super thirsty but shy away from the deed, not so here. The way the sex in this one just… happens… is kind of nice in its regularity. Rather than the nth story where you have an OTP and tons of next-in-lines who never get anything, this is, really, more satisfying.

It’s not all perfect. The demon storyline introduces yet another in our cavalcade of very busty sidekicks, because manga, and watching Roland casually bust out his mind control powers again to make her act like a dog is… look, I am just saying, it’s getting weird and that’s not even addressing the ethics there. Between that and Rila basically having been ‘domesticated’ and Roland’s apparently endless attractiveness, you won’t see this on syallabus for a feminist writing course any time soon.

There are no stakes, though the day-to-day stuff is still managing to hold on as the highlight. Even still, the vignettes that open up the book are kind of meh and Roland’s teachings veer towards the cruel at times. Roland himself does have a bit of a mean streak to his actions now and then that doesn’t make him the most likeable lead.

I get that part of the joke is that even trying to be normal keeps dragging Roland into caper after caper, but this stuff is the absolute low point of the story and feels the least interesting. The office work is more exciting! Needless to say, the cliffhanger that closes this out promises yet more of the same.

3 stars - okay story, some great banter, a novel attitude towards sex for a change, it’s fine. Definitely in the mould of shonen I’m less a fan of, but with just enough to keep me coming back for now.

I think I'll DNF this series as it is now. I might perhaps pick up a volume or so from the library if I feel like it in the future but as of right now.... It's a DNF.
There are parts I enjoy and find interesting enough to continue reading the series, but there are also other parts and pet peeves at times which just makes me consider not continuing. It's not a bad series as such to me, but it is just a middle of the road read and honestly speaking I have other middle of the road reads I enjoy more than this personally. I still enjoy the story concept and art though. But by the end of the day this is not one of my middle of the road reads I'm actually really invested in.
Also from what I can gather in 2025, this series is seemingly still being published and that is another reason why I don't really feel committed to continuing it. If it was done and had. eg. 10 volumes, I might have stuck it out and finished the series.

Awww, he saved her and saved humanity again.

I thought she was pregnant! I wonder if she will be in the next book now that they are both fine with it ❤️ I thought Maylee would make them want a child.

this is a lot better than vol 2

the "slice of life" storylines are better than the actual plot

It's always a good sign when a series is getting better volume to volume!

The battles are interesting as well as the plot but the slice of life aspects are so Darn precious.
