Izumi's first meeting with Shikimori's mother becomes a test of courage—he must confess they’ve been in a long-term relationship! With Shikimori inconveniently absent during the moment of truth, will his love keep him from faltering? Afterwards, Izumi and Shikimori prepare for final exams. Shikimori's hyper-competitive nature goes into overdrive when they make a bet on who will score higher!
As Christmas approaches, Kamiya prepares to enjoy the holiday quietly, but Nekozaki invites her to a party that challenges her guarded nature. Party activities are out of Kamiya's comfort zone, but with the right friends, maybe there'll be some Christmas cheer?
With everybody about to meet Shikimori’s mother, will we finally see where she gets it from? Then it’s time for the gang to kill themselves for exams and the best Christmas ever, but not between who you’re thinking. Finally, love means shopping with other people.
As noted in many prior reviews, how did this story morph from such a repetitive and singular first volume into one of my favourite relationships and a treatise on friendship that oozes warmth and acceptance every volume?
To which the answer is, of course, who cares, just be glad that it did. And so we roll into another corker of a volume that starts off with Shikimori’s hilariously awkward mother and the looming threat of her finding out that Izumi and her daughter have been dating for almost a year.
This one is a belter, giving all the cast something to do, even if they are ultimately super, super useless, and shining a light on what a strong bond Shikimori and Izumi have been forging.
Legitimately, these two are one of the only manga couples where you don’t need to wonder if they’ll survive puppy love and graduation - they feel like a perfect pairing together and it’s proven over and over. This arc is also capped off with a brilliantly perfect callback joke to the antics of Shikimori and Izumi’s friends.
The exam section’s also a big goof, with Shikimori’s hypercompetitive nature getting the best of her and half the cast ending up pulling all-nighters, leading to one of the funniest visuals in the series’ history (Hachimitsu’s hair, my god).
In the aftermath, everybody reflects on all the things they want to do together and the recognition of graduation and moving on takes hold. This is a very conversational piece, but I like the maturity with which the gang handles this inevitability - even if you might drift apart, planning like you won’t IS a choice.
When Christmas arrives, we have a lovely date with our two leads, but the real joy turns out to be the girls’ party the day beforehand, which brings Kamiya back into the mix and is both funnier and sweeter than even the date it precedes. The Kamiya and Hachimitsu friendship is just the cutest.
One other thing I really like about Shikimori and Izumi’s relationship is how not chaste it is. The mangaka does make a meal out of their moment’s of physical affection, that scarf scene is absolutely killer, but you can see how comfortable they’re slowly becoming (although one party does not get the point of a penalty game at all). That clothes shopping excursion is partly an excuse for dressing up, but it pays off wonderfully.
There’s so much to enjoy here and I literally enjoyed all of it. I don’t think that there’s a bad story in the bunch and this series has got its rhythms down to a science by this point and knows exactly how much to give and when and who to have it delivered by.
5 stars - is it perfect? To my mind, yes, yes it is. This is the thing that keeps invading my weekly reading as I try to keep up with the new releases and it never fails to make me happy.
Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie, Vol. 7 (My Kindle Review)
We get to see Shikimori’s mom as the group of friends study at Shikimori’s house and she’s definitely the opposite of her daughter yet thankfully it all goes well for her boyfriend’s sake. Final exams arrives and we see a surprise side of Shikimori that’s caused by overnight studying. The holidays are here and we see them all enjoying the warm festivities. A (100%/Outstanding)
So, tests come, people go with little sleep, then comes the winter break. The girls take Shikimori's rival to karaoke night on Christmas eve. Everyone has a blast. The next day, Shikimori and Izumi meet & exchange presents. Then, in a bold move, Shikimori, while Izumi is tangled in bushes, she gives him a full on kiss. Wtg, Girlfriend! Show that boy how much you love him. Oh, and Izumi & the gang go to Shikimori's house for a study session. Shikimori has left out one small detail about her lengthy relationship with Izumi - she's never told her folks! Well, while studying, one thing leads to another, and Izumi finds himself alone in the laundry room with Shikimori's Mother! He works up the courage, and confesses his love for her daughter. Mother dear admits she kinda already knew, as she had seen him out on the town with Shikimori, and was very pleased by how happy her daughter looked. Mother gives her full approval, and so goeth another wonderful volume of this delightful series.
We finally get to see Shikimori’s mom! Izumi tells her that they have been dating for a year and she approves, her mom even tells Shikimori that she trusts her judgment and thinks that Izumi is a nice boy. The part when Shikimori was sleepy because she had stayed all night studying was so funny, I laughed out loud! Kamiya being part of the friend group was awesome, she is someone who has always been seen as a cool/cold person, but Shikimori, Nekozaki and Hachimitsu welcomed her and made her feel like she was a normal girl, with normal friends! Lastly, one part that I really enjoyed was the short story of Izumi’s parents, they seem to love each other a lot!

Christmas festivities with the girls and the couple exchanges gifts. Overall, enjoyed getting to see more of the character's interacting and it was cute and fun to read!
Holiday cuteness ╰(*´︶`*)╯♡ perfect for this time of year!!!!!! I adored the sisterhood that the girls have - and how welcoming they are to Kamiya. There was also a shopping montage that was so silly and sweet. More of this fluffy goodness, please!
It was nice meeting Shikimori's mom and heartwarming to see her response to Izumi's confession, but it did bother me that she's apparently known this entire time. I feel like its kind of a cop-out for what could have been a shocking and/or otherwise emotional moment. I do love that she's supportive of their relationship, but her knowing this whole time kind of ruins the emotional weight of the reveal.
Other than that, I loved the girls' holiday get together and the gang planning their fun-filled adventures for the new year. I do genuinely love seeing the cast interact with each other, the group dynamic is sweet, fun, and wholesome. Izumi's and Shikimori's relationship is cute, healthy, and I do love it, but I'm starting to realize I prefer chapters where the focus is on a group rather than the main couple alone.
Still a fun series and still enjoying it, looking forward to more!
