Mail-Order Mama #16

A Scout for Skyler

Rate this book
Huntin’, Fishin’, and Fightin’ was all she’d ever known.

An only child, Priscilla Jones has never done anything but follow behind her pa and learn the ways of the outdoors. On his death bed, he announces he’s sending her off to become the mail-order bride of an army captain. His dying wish is that she make the man a good wife, be happy…and wear a dress once in a while.

A recent widower, Captain Skyler Corbett is an arrogant Scotsman who believes women should have babies not opinions. Regardless, the last thing he needs is a wife. His daughter is coming of age, however, and friends argue she needs a woman’s influence.

When the headstrong, unrefined and unexpected Priscilla Jones shows up, Corbett is not inclined to marry her. Ever. Priscilla agrees, firing back that the snooty Captain Corbett is no prize, either.

It seems this arranged marriage is destined for the ash heap. Embers, though, do have a sneaky way of catching fire…

“Heather Blanton is blessed with a natural storytelling ability, an ‘old soul’ wisdom, and wide expansive heart. Her characters are vividly drawn, and in the western settings where life can be hard, over quickly, and seemingly without meaning, she reveals Larger Hands holding everyone and everything together.”

I write Christian Historical Western Romance. Yes, that often entails the use of firearms in a threatening manner. Sometimes there are fistfights. There may even be politically incorrect but historically accurate language. But also, there is always an inspirational message and strong allusions (at least) to the gospel.

A former journalist, I am an avid researcher and endeavor to skillfully weave truth in among fictional story lines. I love exploring the American West, especially ghost towns and museums. I have walked parts of the Oregon Trail, ridden horses through the Rockies, climbed to the top of Independence Rock, and even held an outlaw's note in my hand.

I grew up in the mountains of Western North Carolina on a steady diet of Bonanza, Gunsmoke, and John Wayne Westerns. My most fond childhood memory is of sitting next to my daddy, munching on popcorn, and watching Lucas McCain unload that Winchester! My daddy also taught me to shoot and, trust me, I can sew buttons on with my rifle.

I am a proud member of Western Writers of America.

My novels are all Christian Western Romance because this is the genre that lets me write about strong, pioneer women and men who struggle to find God and then live out their faith in real ways. Like good old fashioned Westerns, there is always justice, a moral message, American values, lots of high adventure, unexpected plot twists, and more than a touch of suspense. Of course, romance is always a strong element in my stories because it is such a beautiful gift from God and a perfect reflection of how he loves us: sacrificially and lavishly. My stories aren’t preachy or cheesy, but I hope they are inspirational, heart-warming, realistic, illuminating, and glorifying to God.

A Scout for Skyler was such a fun book to read. Heather Blanton's love of the Old West, mountain life, and the wranglers and buckaroos that populated that lifestyle shines through in this newest book of Blanton's. Priscilla is quite the wrangler--she can outshoot, out-knife throw, and out-ride most everyone around. She's a wild cat that will need a special kind of man to tame. Unbeknownst to either party, two fathers agreed that pompous, prideful Army Captain Skyler Corbett was just the man to do so. Priscilla reluctantly complies with her father's dying wish and when she arrives at the military fort, the sparks (and occasionally knives) do fly. I enjoyed watching the changes in these two compelling characters as they wended the road to matrimony. Add in an outspoken young teenaged daughter and a few other unforgettable characters and readers will be swept up into a captivating story. It was a delight to watch their journey to a life together as the twists and turns in the plot kept the interest high. Blanton has skillfully woven together a story of adventure, drama, faith, and, of course, romance to create an unputdownable book.
I read a complimentary copy of the book and was not required to write a review. The opinions are my own.

This was a difficult mail-order bride romance for me, mostly because I found the hero very unlikable. He was obnoxious, rude, and a complete snob -- and treated Priscilla like she was beneath him, simply because she was not educated and didn't act like a lady. Because of that, it gets only 2 stars from me.

I thought the book was too short to have enough character development. I wanted more backstory on both Priscilla and Skyler.

Priscilla was likable enough, but I wanted her to stand up to Skyler a little more. She let him get away with a lot of the extremely rude things he said/did -- and she should have told him off, because he needed to be knocked down a few pegs. I did like that she tried so hard to adjust, and to learn the things his daughter taught her. I still wanted her to refuse to follow Skyler's orders, though, because he had no right to be such a controlling, rude, jerk.

Skyler was a rude, entitled, snob, and he treated Priscilla awful. He got a little better at the end, but I really didn't understand why Priscilla fell in love with him. He said so many mean things to her, and tried to change her so much. It would have served him right if she had left him, and never came back -- because he didn't deserve her. She should have at least made him do some serious groveling before she accepted his proposal.

This is a clean romance, with nothing but kisses. If you only want to read romances that do not include sex scenes, this one might work for you.

My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

Once again Heather has written a book that speaks right to the heart! A marvelously written western romance that is funny, entertaining, true to life, and has a HEA - finally! Having spent a lot of time in the hill of Western North Carolina and knowing numerous people who are true "mountain folk" - Heather picked up the walk, the lifestyle, the mannerisms, the dress, the ideology, and the true mountain spirit of the 1800's. It is almost if she has been taken out of the book and was able to write her own personal biography.

The mountain folk from this area and this time period are independent, proud, hard working, self-sufficient, and really have no use for "citified" ways. Many are believed to be Scots/Irish who left their homeland and settle in Appalachia. Today they still carry that same spirit and grit that helped them survive.

"A Scout for Skylar" is a delightful read with many humorous scenes, tender scenes, hurtful scenes, and historically correct scenes. Each and every scene shows the love of God, His caring and support for his children, and how believers need to be still and listen for God's instruction and then follow them - exactly.

Every time I read one of her books, the Holy Spirit speaks to me and shows me where I am wrong. God, thank you for Heather Blanton and for speaking through her to me - and I am sure many more like me.

Heather Blanton never disappoints her readers. She takes characters who were lacking in numerous ways and melds them together to make something beautiful. This is Priscilla ("Prissy") Jones and Army Captain Skyler Corbett's story. On his deathbed, Priscilla's father announced he had made arrangements for her to become a MOB to Skyler. All Priscilla has known her father has taught her which included hunting fishing, knife throwing and fighting. Skyler, while not wanting to remarry, agreed to a MOB so that his daughter will have a female influence. Oh dear, when Priscilla arrives in buckskins with none of the refinement Skyler expected, disappointment sets in, and his daughter does not like Priscilla. But God in his wisdom often takes opposites and melds them together for the good of all. Will the sparks that fly between the couple turn to romantic sparks and become a HEA? Be sure to read this wonderful story to find out. Be prepared to laugh and maybe shed a tear or two; I know you will enjoy it as much as I did.

Highland Heathen

When Skyler's father and Priscilla's father work together so Priscilla has somewhere to go when her father dies, Skyler thinks his father is playing a nasty joke on them. Priscilla's mother died when she was young, so her dad raised her the same way he did her brothers. She's uneducated in the ways of society, as well as academically. Therefore, when she arrives at the fort in buck skins, wielding a knife, pistol and rifle, Skyler doesn't know what to make of her. He emphatically declares that he won't marry her, though. He does agree that she can be his housekeeper and companion to his fourteen year old daughter until it's safe for her to travel back to where she came from. I loved seeing this story unfold and for Skyler to meet a woman who could give back to him all that he deserved. Priscilla is definitely a very unique woman, the likes of which no one at the fort had ever seen before. I do wish that Skyler's father would have shared the history of his and Summer's mother's romance. Maybe Skyler wouldn't have been such a snob.

A Scout for Skyler is a truly amazing story!

Heather Blanton is a truly gifted writer and I am never disappointed in her books. The relationship between a stuffy snobbish Scottish Captain and a Calamity Jane like "countrified" lass is just priceless. Skyler and Priscilla's witty banter is very entertaining and there is plenty of action and adventure to thoroughly satisfy! The plotlines are strong, characters well developed, even likeable and the pace is perfect. There is even an omage to Heather's Defiance series, which I highly recommend reading. Her writing is always top notch and mixes comedy with drama, and romance and oftentimes has the true grit of the Wild West! Truly loving this Mail Order Mama series and can't wait to read the next one!

A Scout for Skyler, A New Mother for Bea?

Skyler was an Army Captain whose wife had passed away leaving him to raise their daughter, Bea. He felt that she needed a woman's influence so he sent for a mail order bride. Priscilla came as his mail order bride. Her father was a scout at an Army base in the Blue Ridge Mountains. She had learned to scout from her father. The first time Skyler saw Priscilla, she was teaching Bea to throw a knife--not exactly what he wanted his young daughter to learn. Priscilla tried to rein in the skills she learned as a scout, but Bea was not happy about that.

Will Skyler and Priscilla come to a truce? Read this book to find out. I really enjoyed this book.

She could hunt, fish, track and throw a knife better than many men. She worked by the side of her Dad doing chores, wearing pants and being the “son” he needed. Then, he died. This story is so compelling that I couldn’t stop reading about Priscilla as she took her uneducated ways from the mountains to a military base to become a companion to a girl and wife to a military Captain. A wife he rejected. Being a strong woman, Priscilla stood firm in her faith in God and trust in a close friend of her Dad’s. I loved this story and totally got involved in their lives. Thanks to the author for a great read.

I have to confess that I am an avid fan of Heather Blanton even though I do not consider myself a fan of "romance". Her main female character is usually non-traditional , non-conformist and very witty. Priscilla Jones is no exception. She has the courage of a cougar and the skills that would be the envy of any military man. On his deathbed her father betrothes her to Captain Skyler Corbett, a man used to prestigious, dignified women and men that do not question his orders or challenge him verbally. So start the fireworks! A fun read filled with faith, humor, self introspection and the importance of remaining true-to God and self.

I'm not sure Captain Skyler Corbett was good enough for Priscilla. He started out by making the following statement in reply to Nate stating "they're women and not soldier.": With proper leadership there is very little difference". Thankfully he was teachable. It was so much fun watching him continually stick his foot in his mouth. Granted Priscilla was not your normal young lady, much less a Scottish laird's lady. Heather Blanton had a good balance of romance and humor in this book.

Not your typical mail order bride historical romance. Priscilla is a FISH out of WATER. A woman, who can cook, sew, fight, and shoot. A woman, who prefers britches instead of pretty dresses AND speaks her mind but understands other's feeling. A mountain woman of faith. A woman, who could sew like a surgeon, fight like a man, and sketch like an artist. Captain Skyler Corbett is arrogant and rude, a force to be reckoned with. Bea, Skyler daughter and Nate, Skyler friend made this story a page during read with foreshadowing, unexpected plot twists and a satisfying resolution.

a riding, shooting, hunting, knife throwing wild girl gets her man

This is one of the best books Heather Blanton has authored…… but then I say that about ALL her books. A truly gifted and anointed writer who presents the gospel in a dish for sinners, no high faulting churchy words but a love of the gospel principals easily understood by the Unchurched. This book provided a contrast between a wild girl and the staid match her father sent her to. A great story everyone should read.

Better and better

I didn’t think her works could get any better, but I was wrong. I was blessed to have spent a year of my life in the mountains of North Carolina and I can picture Priscilla living there. I can hear her voice. I can also picture Skylar because not everyone there was willing to accept my “citified” ways. It is so much fun to watch the blending of ways. Have fun reading this book!

'I've met tornados with less force'

Oooh! Priscilla shakes Skyler's world up beautifully! Not only did he never expect a wife but she is the opposite of everything he wants and everything he could have imagined...but she is exactly what he needs! Both as a woman and as a warrior.
We have verbal sparring, knife throwing, a feisty woman throwing plenty of sass, a viper in their midst and plenty of fireworks!
I loved this addition to the series which I read on Kindle Unlimited.

Enjoyable

This truly an enjoyable read. Makes you pull for the underdog (termed used lightly). Priscilla is a young lady that has a charm all her own. Makes me wish I was as well rounded as she is. Skyler has some lessons he needs to learn and Prissy doesn't mind teaching him.
This is a clean read and I will be checking out Ms. Blanton for any other books as I so loved this book.

A Scout for Skyler

This was such a fun book! I loved all the characters in this book. Priscilla is a rough and tumble, backwoods tomboy with a lot of sass and Skyler is so proper and serious about everything. But, the attraction between them is strong, even though they both try to ignore it. They storyline is great and so interesting, I couldn't put the book down. If you like historical western romance, it doesn't get much better than this.

I love my Pa

I love my Pa, and I know he regrets some of the things that he did not do to for me as a woman. Though I can tell he’s proud of me for the things I can do. But his time is short, Lord please forgive me I want him for longer. Now I see the doctor leaving and I know that he running out of time.
Girl I want you to go and marry this man, it is set in place. No Pa, please. I want you to promise me. Will you do that?….

This is a great book!! I was laughing out loud at some of the banter between Skyler and Priscilla. There's one scene that I can honestly picture happening, because of Priscilla's upbringing. Really great read!!

I received a complimentary copy of this book, wasn't required to leave a review, and the opinion expressed is my own.

Skyler, Priscilla and Bea

This is a love story of a dying man request of his daughter and the marriage brokered by Skylers father and Priscilla’s father. Skyler is a captain in the military and Priscilla is daughter, born and raised in the mountains of Tennessee. Total opposites from one another. You will greatly enjoy discovering how they find their happily ever after.

don’t judge a book by its cover

Yep, the heroine is so much more than what you first see. It just takes awhile before Skyler gets over his prejudices “to see the light” so to speak. Loved seeing how she trusts the Lord as she works her way through a challenging situation, Will, read more by this author,

This story needed to be a full length novel instead of a novella 😭 I really enjoyed the characters. I loved the spitfire Priscilla, the Scottish accented Skyler, and the impish Bea. I wish the story had been longer and maybe more adventures of Skyler and Priscilla scouting. I’m still wondering what all Nate was up to, but I enjoyed his character as well. This was a fun read.

This book is not my usual genre but I have to say I very much enjoyed it. A girl raised like a boy in the wild’s of Tennessee gets sent to a military fort in Colorado to be the bride of a very proper Captain and the sparks fly. And not all of them good sparks either. A rousing western romance with lots of comedy and hurts inflicted as well. But of course it has a happy ending.

This is a sweet historical romance with lots of opportunity for laughter. It isn’t a comedy as such, it’s just all out fun. Priscilla is an unusual girl. She’s progressive for her time; scoot her forward 100 years and she would fit right in but still be ahead of the curve. Pit her against a man with my-home/my-castle mindset and things get interesting. I look forward to more by this author.

Wonderful, clean, Christian western romance

I loved this story. I didn't want it to end. Priscilla was a great character and she is just what the stubborn Skylar needed. The only thing I would have loved m94e was an extended epilogue. If you like clean, Christian (not preachy) romance, you will love this book.

Love, love, LOVED this snark-filled adventurous story. Blanton spins a great yarn and keeps Jesus in there without shoving Him down your throat. Very nicely done!

Priscilla is a wildcat - but has more to offer than how she first appears. Sklyer is reluctant (stubbornly so) to see who she really is, but his eyes are eventually opened. Did I mention I loved this story?

When an uneducated, backwoods woman meets a stubborn army Captain, sparks fly. Priscilla Jones promised her father that she would marry Captain Skyler Corbett. The captain doesn’t know she is coming and doesn’t think he needs a bride. He is appalled by her dress and demeanor, and she can’t get past his stubbornness. I loved watching this story unfold. It was a great book.

Thoroughly enjoyed Priscilla. She doesn't back down with Silver. They go tit for tat. You will laugh and get upset but you will be pleasantly entertained with this story. One of the best in the series.

Love the story

I am big on facts. When writing period specific books please don’t use euphemisms of today. Fact, Buck Stove was first sold in 1975 so they would not know what kind of heat a buck stove radiated. Fun fact, Carol Buckner is who the stove was named after.

A book worth reading!

It has been a long time since I laughed out loud while reading a book! This book was so enjoyable. I loved the way that the characters talked with God.... then waited for God's answer. I could place myself in the setting... portrayed so vividly. GREAT book!
