CN: Rape/Sexual assault; Major character death; Sexual content in almost every story

This is a collection of short stories all written by the same author, centering queer characters in a steampunk setting. Worth noting that in this case, "steampunk" is more magic than technology. I am not familiar enough with the genre to know how normal this is, and thought that others might like a warning, too.

I didn't like this book. At all. I was really happy to find it, and am actually still happy to have given it a chance, but would not recommend it to anyone else.

First, I was a bit disappointed by the magic worldbuilding thing, but that is probably on me and my misconceptions regarding steampunk, so I'm not holding it against the author. I did, however, absolutely dislike the writing style, as I didn't think much of its quality. As to the content, the author has done the fanfiction thing where people seem to think that the one and only way to establish that two characters care about each other is a sex scene. This leads to way too many unnecessary sex scenes, less character and relationship introspection than I would have liked, and a general feeling of disappointment regarding the overall quality. And a final thing, also content-wise: These stories are usually tragic and end with one or more of the characters dead. This feels like something the author just likes doing, and I understand that someone would want to write "darker" stories. But this is a book with the word "Pride" in the title, so many readers are inevitably coming here with the expectation of finding something happy and uplifting. This book isn't it, and the author also lacks the skill to write good tragedy.

As a conclusion: This book reads like bad fanfiction. I love the concept, but would not recommend.

Jessica always surprises you with her short stories. They make you look at yourself sometimes and a couple of the stories gave me the feels, as my kids say. These stories just don't represent the LGBTQ community, they represent anyone with a open heart.
