A Perilous Cake Pop is book #3 in a charming and hilarious new cozy mystery series Beachfront Bakery by #1 bestselling author Fiona Grace, whose bestselling Murder in the Manor (A Lacey Doyle Cozy Mystery) has nearly 200 five star reviews. Bakery owner and chef Allison Sweet, 34 has already recovered from a couple of mysterious deaths that had implicated her among others and she had decided that she needed to try to solve the murders herself along with her tray dog that had adopted her to save her newly established business and clear her name.
A hilarious cozy mystery series, packed with twists, turns, romance, travel, food and unexpected adventure, the Beachfront Bakery series will keep you laughing and turning pages late into the night as you fall in love with an endearing new character who will capture your heart. #3 continues the quality and engagement of the first two books.
Sadly, this one wasn't as good as the first two. I just couldn't get "involved" with the murder. Maybe it was the love triangle that was eh at best or just the story this time. Whatever it was, I hope the next book gets better!
I have enjoyed The Beachfront Bakery series books 1 & 2, but this one was just okay. The storyline is redundant. How many times in a person’s life does one get accused of murder? The book title, A Perilous Cake Pop had nothing to do with the storyline. Never was a cake pop mentioned! Or did i miss it? Lol. About the only thing I loved about this book is her growing relationship with the stray dog, Scruff.
I listened to the audio on Hoopla and I did not care for the narrator’s imitation of the characters, especially the men. I cringed through the entire book every time she spoke as Nate and the Texas guy. The narrator almost made me ditch this book.
I see a 4th book is coming. Will I read it, probably because I’ve enjoyed the community and friendships that have developed, but hopefully the story doesn’t involve HER being accused of murder again. That’s become pretty boring. Perhaps she can go solve a murder mystery that one of her friends is accused of. Give someone else a turn.
I gave it three stars because of the change in narrator. At first it was very hard to get into the story with the change in narrator. It went from an American reading the first two to an English women reading this one. Also the characters did not sound like the other books and at times you can hear the English accent in the characters.
I was able to finish the book and the story itself I did enjoy. I am going to read the next in line and if it too is hard to listen to I will switch to reading the book.
As fun as the previous two. Have the fourth on pre-order from Amazon. The heroine has a penchant for solving murders. At the last minute in every case. Her love life is a mess. Yet she prevails. You gotta love it!!
I read this book only to see whether past reviews would prompt a better finale to the trilogy. Starting with 5 stars, here is why this book was given this rating: -1 star: the author is clearly British, and not really in touch with American mannerisms. I’ve never heard of two Americans discussing putting something “on the diary.” (We grab our calendars or look at our schedules. A diary is a notebook for jotting personal thoughts.) If the author had taken a few seconds to do cursory research, this would have been a higher quality read.
-1 star: I listened to this book. The narrator, while much better and more professional than in book 2, didn’t fully do her research on the characters. Nate is Australian, so having a CA surfer accent made me cringe every time he was speaking. Other than that, she was still loads better than in Book 2, which is to say that this was edited and she can read an entire sentence without stumbling.
-1 star: this author gives cozy mysteries a bad name. The point of a guilty pleasure is to actually glean pleasure from the read. I find, instead, that I’m hurrying to get through the book or trying to avoid it because it’s not enjoyable. Fiona Grace has had multiple chances to refine her books since she seems to pop a new read out once a week. It’s unfortunately a situation where quantity has far surpassed quality, and at a negative impact to readers.
This is part of one of three series I am reading by the same author. They all have a a woman who is starting over in a new place with a new business. The woman is also trying to find her father who left her family when she was young. And there is usually a pet involved. And then there's a murder and the heroine is under suspicion so she investigates on her own. There are also multiple love interests she is trying to decide between. This one is set in a beachfront community in California. They're all pretty much of a piece, and yet I keep reading them to see what happens to the heroine and if she ever finds her father.
A fun book and series centered around a sweet shop owner and the beach neighbors around her. Combine that with a great murder mystery, wonderful characters and stray dog and you've got yourself a great book! On to book 4 now! Happy Reading!
A Perilous Cake Pop is book 3 in Fiona Grace’s Beachfront Bakery cozy mystery series.
Once again A Perilous Cake Pop is pretty similar to books one and two, in fact the author definitely follows a predictable formula so if you’ve read either of the first two books you’ll recognize it.
I want to clarify before I continue that I did like this book. I liked the characters, it was funny at times and was just a nice, quick read.
Also there may be some spoilers ahead, so read with caution.
My first problem with this book is the title. In book one, A Killer Cupcake, Ali started selling cupcakes as her bakery was getting off the ground. In book two, A Murderous Macaron, she expanded her goods to include macarons. In book three, A Perilous Cake Pop, there is not a single mention of a cake pop in the entire book, so how did the author come up with this name?
Problem number two, how long can a brand new, small town bakery survive when it’s being shut down every other week for a homicide investigation? And how many times can Ali be accused of murder? Why does she always have to be the one accused? Can’t she investigate a murder if one of her friends is accused?
Problem number three, I feel like Ali needs to grow a backbone. She can’t stand up to anyone in her life, including the two guys she’s dating/not dating (they think they are dating her, she is insisting they are just friends, but won’t tell either of them about the other guy). And now there’s the possibility of a third love interest?
Problem four, Ali is still obsessed with this fantasy version of her dad that she has from her childhood, before he abandoned their family and then disappeared. I keep wondering if the father will eventually show up and the author will try to give him some sort of legitimate reason why he disappeared from their lives without a word for over ten years.
For the most part the book was enjoyable, but I think I may need to take a break between books and read something else so that I’m less irritated by some of the things I just mentioned.
Ugh, I’m at the annoyed point of this series. All three books focused on Ali as the murder suspect. Not only that, but Book 2 and 3 were very similar as far as the victims.
Ali is completely clueless as far as the men in her life and doesn’t know how to tell them No. Then she lied to her brother about having a “business lunch”…ya, more like a none-of-your “business lunch”. Why does she feel the need to hide her relationships with Nate and Seth when they’re both supposedly her “friends”? The only steady is Scruff who we can always trust to be there for her and pull through in the end.
Now she has feelings for the Detective and boy oh boy I’m feeling this is the making of a hussy!
Also, there’s the ongoing Mystery of her father and his whereabouts. Her mom thinks he’s dead and Ali recently discovered he was in her town a couple of years prior.
And ruining surprises and accusing people of murder - to their face! No couth at all. Annoying. Maybe someone should murder her next. Maybe her mother will when she comes out to visit. There’s nothing like a mother daughter relationship when the mother is so disappointed in the daughter (I get it).
My hope is the next book has someone besides Ali as the suspect. Like maybe the jerk Miriyam will be accused of murder and end up begging Ali to help clear her name. Then Miriyam will finally be nice to Ali! Next book is A Deadly Danish
The Beachfront Bakery Series by Fiona Grace is another fun cozy mystery series with crime & investigation, suspense, drama, humour, and a whodunnit element. Allison Sweet (34) is a pastry chef who is fed up with the LA scene, rude customers, her stressful job that comes with a difficult boss, and her bad luck with love. A shocking incident became the catalyst she needed to change her life, and head in a new direction. So, she changes course, moving to the seaside and opening her own bakery. Things take a dramatic turn when a body is discovered close by. Soon, Allison is implicated in it all, and has no choice but to get to the bottom of things and clear her name. Her whole future is riding on the outcome. Each instalment sees Allison pulled into various mysteries and we get a front row seat to her ‘investigations’. The series follows a predictable ‘recipe’- especially after reading the ‘Lacey Doyle’ series- as it follows pretty much that exact recipe, right down to her furry sidekick. I thought things could have been changed up a little more, but the six books still made for an entertaining read. The Series contains: -A Killer Cupcake (Book #1) -A Murderous Macaron (Book #2) -A Perilous Cake Pop (Book #3) -A Deadly Danish (Book #4) -A Treacherous Tart (Book #5) -A Calamitous Cookie (Book #6)
I am usually a fan of cozy mysteries. I’ve listened to the audiobook format of the first three books in the series. I have no idea why the audiobooks have British narrators for the series which is set in a fictitious beach town near Los Angeles. The series includes an air head bakery owning protagonist who acts without thinking on a regular basis. The small beach town has a boardwalk with shops —and for a small town, it is amazing how often the heroine finds a shop she’s never seen before (really?). To read the books, the reader has to suspend a sense of logic as much happens that makes no sense. The narrator of the third book needs to learn how to pronounce macaron. In the second book, the heroine (who owns a bakery) makes macarons in 45 minutes. I’ve made macarons and it takes a lot longer than 45 minutes to make them. Why have I bothered to continue with these books? I ran out of other audiobooks on loan from my local library and needed something that didn’t require much concentration to listen to while driving. I keep hoping that there will be some resolution to some open questions.
About halfway through this book I was ready to quit this series. It seemed to be the same plot over and over. Ally is always accused of murder and her shop closed until she can find the murderer. It’s time for someone else to be the suspect! The whole love triangle was getting a little ridiculous too, and I really don’t see how either guy could think they have an exclusive relationship with her. The scene in the restaurant where the two men confront her is ridiculous. Although both had expressed their interest, she was clear that she was not ready for a relationship and had not even kissed either guy. All in all, this story was giving me MANY eye rolls! Luckily, the last chapters of the book saved it. The scene with Ally snd the murderer in the garbage was quite amusing, and I was relieved to see her move on to a new romance. It had been clear that her and the detective were destined to go down this road and it felt like time. I would give this series another try, but I really hope there is a different suspect on the hot seat!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
This was the worst of the three books in the series so far. Some questions and their answers that you might be interested in after reading this book:
What do cake pops have to do with this book? - Absolutely nothing. Other than in the title, they are not even mentioned.
What does a British narrator bring to the audio version of this book? - Nothing other than botched Australian and Southern accents.
Why would the police suspect Allie of murder after two other murders where she was NOT the murderer? - No clue. The police characters seem to be completely different than the other two books, even though the names are the same.
Why does Allie think she has to find the murderer even though the police are clearly capable of doing this on their own? - Again, no clue. And Allie jumps to conclusions A LOT and makes a complete and utter fool of herself A LOT.
The relationship with Scruff is cute - hence the 2 stars instead of one. I'll try one more book in this series. If it's as bad as this, I'll give up. The author needs a new formula for her books - not the same same again.
This one has another obnoxious victim, a food critic who gave Ali's bakery a scathing review and ended up dead. This time in the trash bin outside her shop and of course, Ali is the main suspect. And it looks like at least one of the two detectives who have been investigating all these murders is starting to accept Ali's need to investigate the crimes.
As for Ali's love life, trying to date two guys at the same time came with a lot of stress and you just know it's never going to end well. And her need to find answers about her father also created tension with her brother Teddy. But I would love to try those sugar-less "healthy" cookies though. :)
Like many other Fiona Grace books, we have another case of a mysterious murder and our wonderful protagonist is suspected of it. I won’t lie, these have been my guilty pleasure. The absurdity of a bakery owner being suspected of murder not once, not twice, but three times (!!!) in her short stint on the boardwalk and the hopeless love triangle are the chaos I want to start my mornings. There were times I had to stop and sit in silence from the secondhand embarrassment, but it’s a cozy mystery, so I can’t expect too much. However, this will be my last book from the series for now… I’ve been listening to the audiobooks and the terrible Australian and New York accents are too much for me 😂
Book three in the Beachfront Bakery Cozy Mystery series is about as zany a read as you will ever get. Ali Sweet runs a bakery that has been shutdown as much as it is open. It seems the police detectives are at her store more often than at their station house. Ali and the scruffy dog that adopted her, make up a crazy duo that get into more trouble and accuse the most unlikely people of murder. This light hearted series is a great take-me-away book filled with comedy, mystery and a dash of love. It would make a great TV show.
The first series of Fiona Grace that I read was a Villa in Sicily and I loved that series. So once I read the last in the series I decided to start another series of hers, The Beachfront Bakery. I am disappointed as it is very apparent she has a formula - young adult female starting over in a new place, relationship with a sibling, missing father, a pet, meddling in police investigations, love triangle and always being accused of murder. I already downloaded the 4th book so will read it but very disheartened to realize this formula likely exists in her other series.
I really loved the first two books, but this one just kind of fell flat. The storyline was pretty much the same as the first two and it only got interesting near the end. I also didn’t like the voices the audiobook narrator did for the men, especially Nate.
That said, I do love Scruff and I liked that Piper was much more competent in this one. I also enjoyed that Ally’s relationship with the detectives was different than in the previous books.
I’ll give the next one a shot, but I hope it’s a whole lot better than this one was.
The title of this book is misleading. Not once does the narrative mention a cake pop.
The story is mildly interesting; however, the protagonist continues her annoying habit of formulating a theory, confronting her suspects, and accusing them of murder. She careens from one disaster to another.
I listened to this story through Hoopla. The narration of this book was pretty good with the exception of the southern accent for Piper.
My first cozy mystery, so that was neat. It seems a little strange that a person would feel the need to solve a crime herself to clear her name (seems sketchy, like the police won't find it weird you keep showing up with all the clues and suspects?), but I guess that's the point of cozy mysteries? Mostly a cute story. I felt a little bad for the guys she was kind of stringing along, though I can understand why she'd be a little distracted lol
I'm a little confused....I've never had the experience of characters changing completely in the middle of a series.....with that said, still a nice cozy mystery with an interesting plot . .. to be fair, I listen to her books on audio so, when the southern belle all of a sudden has a Jersey accent it's a little puzzling and the Aussie love interest now is an Italian ....well, life should keep you on your toes lol . . .
I had to take a small break between the 2nd and the 3rd book, but I still loved the feel of this murder mystery. Ali has once again found herself in the middle of a murder investigation. This time someone who wrote a bad review about her store has been killed and dumped near her bakery and guess who's suspect number 1? Once again, she does everything to clear her name, but this time she also has to deal with those two men that seem to like her. It's a really nice book to just quickly read
Fiona Grace is a wonderful, creative author. The main character Alison Sweet owns a bakery in Willow Bay. In each of the books in the series there is a murder. Alison Sweet is involved in solving each murder. She usually looks like the guilty party, so she feels she needs to clear her name. I have fallen in love with Alison, her boardwalk bakery and her friends. I have enjoyed the first 4 books in this series. This is #3. I hope you enjoy the series as much as I did! ♥️
This is the third narrator of 3 books in this series. If you’re narrating a book centered around a bakery - you should know MACA-RON is pronounced how it looks. It’s not MACA-ROON which is a different baked good. This drives me nuts!
The English accent didn’t work for me. The storyline is redundant . I think I’m done.
LIGHT summer reading. This story is the worst of the three I've read in the Beachfrong Bakery series. You do not need to read these books in order and they are all essentially the same. Allie the baker finds dead body, has a crush, solves the murder, realized she was wrong, solves it again. Also no idea why this one is titled about cake pops because she is working on new cookie recipes
This book is really good. Its another mystery of someone setting up Ali... Or are they. This book sends you on a murderous thinking.. Did someone set Ali up or did she kill someone to save her name and bakery? If you haven't read the books then you need to. This author writes an edge of your seat murder mystery books.
I'm loving the Beachfront Bakery Series! I love that it just takes me away to a beautiful seaside town w/only "single girl problems" to worry about. Yes... OFTEN they involve murder and Ali playing detective, which isn't super believable, but it's a fun little escape for me in the doldrums of winter in the Midwest.
