An Historical Romance with many unpredictable twist and turns. I was swiftly drawn into this beautiful story and found the book impossible to put down. I found it to be entertaining with some tense edge of seat reading . The characters were great and by the end of the book I felt like some of them were like close friends. The gifted writer made the book seem so real and I felt like I was there in the midst of the story. Definitely a page turner with a happily ever after ending.
Alexandra Tarkington lost her mother at a very young age. Her Father took her to her Aunt Helen who raised her to become a well educated and socially excepted beautiful young lady. Alexandra always felt her Father left her with Aunt Helen because he didn’t love her. Her main goal in life was to earn her Fathers love and make him proud of her.
Alexandra was a heiress of her Father’s business. She had inherited her Mother’s fortune and was very wealthy. She had many suitors who had proposed marriage to her but Alexandra was very smart, realizing these men only wanted her wealth. One such suitor became angry with her when she turned his proposal down and threatened her well being if she didn’t agree to marry him. Fearful that the man would follow through with his threats Alexandra fled New York City to be with her Father who lived in Mesquite Springs Texas. She travelled alone, disguising her appearance in the hopes of throwing her former suitor off should he try to follow her.
Arriving in Mesquite Springs Alexandra found that her Father wasn’t happy to see her and told her to go back to New York. With no place to stay and the boarding house full Alexandra didn’t know where to go. One thing was certain that she would not be returning to New York City and she wouldn’t marry that man, ever!
I recommend this book to readers of Historical and Christian Fiction. This book is the third book of the Mesquite Springs series but I read it as a stand alone. This book is scheduled to be released on 3/1/22.

Amanda Cabot has put so many wonderful books out over the years and I have read them all.
I always get excited when I see she has an upcoming book ready to publish as her books are ones not to miss.
The Spark Of Love is the third and final book in the Mesquite Springs series and I am sorry to see it end but greatly anticipate what she'll have out next.
I enjoyed my time in the little town of Mesquite Springs and meeting it's residents.
This book taking place in the Texas Hill Country is full of intrigue,action,suspense and believable characters.
This is a great conclusion to the trilogy and though it can easily be read as a standalone it makes for such fun reading to read the whole series.

Alexandra just managed to cleverly escape a dangerous suitor who was primarily drawn to her vast inheritance, while Gabe's role as a private investigator means that he is on a mission to expose a man who stole fortunes from others. The two travelers formed a friendly bond which continues to grow, especially after Gabe establishes a casual rapport with Alexandra's father, who is building a fine hotel in the growing town, but whose relationship with his own daughter is complicated at best.
Unknown to both of them, two other strangers have arrived in Mesquite Springs with Alexandra in their sights. And when we stumble, "let us put aside anger and forgive each other". A thoughtful, delightful and easy-to-read historical romance that concludes our trips to the town of Mesquite Springs, which I, for one, am going to miss!

I loved this awesome book! Whenever I see an Amanda Cabot book, I get excited. Her stories are so wonderful. I'm never disappointed. She kept me turning the pages, and before I knew it, the book was finished. It was over too soon for me.
Some great messages are woven through the story too. At times I knew just how Alexandra felt. I definitely can relate to her in some of the scenes. I'm sad to see this series end, but I know that there will be some more exciting new novels to look forward to.
I highly recommend this book!

The Spark of Love (2022, Revell), third in the Mesquite Springs series by Amanda Cabot, is a standalone Christian historical romance set in 1857 Mesquite Springs, Texas.
Rating: 4 stars
Is it clean/chaste? Yes.
Other content issues: some mild to moderate violence
Christian elements: A brief discussion about demons (not part of the plot)
The heroine: Alexandra Tarkington, heiress, has been under the guardianship of her great-aunt, Helen, since her mother's death. Since then, she's only seen her father once per year. Alexandra has a threatening suitor, and decides to flee New York and join her father in Texas, heading for "the springs," which she knew would be mistakenly assumed to be Saratoga Springs, New York.
The antagonists:
*Franklin Beckman, Alexandra's threatening suitor, who wants her fortune in order to "pay my debts and make me a rich man"
*Jason Biddle, a close friend of Franklin, who orders Jason to "find her and talk her into coming back and marrying me… If she won't marry me, I want her gone. I don't want some other man getting all that money."
*Mr. Phineas Drummond, Mr. Tarkington's junior partner, and Sonny: Mr. Drummond orders Sonny to "Find her [the girl] and then… "
The hero: "Whether they were famous, infamous, or somewhere in between, Gabe rarely failed in finding them. That was his job." Gabriel Seymour is an investigator based in Columbus, reportedly "as good as a Pinkerton." Jason Biddle claims Mr. Tarkington is a swindler and is indirectly responsible for Jason's father's death. He asks Gabe to "find Calvin Tarkington and put him behind bars." Jason agrees to investigate. By chance, he encounters Alexandra in her travels and rescues her from some overly-enthusiastic men by proclaiming, "Darling! I thought I'd missed you." Alexandra accepts Gabe's offer of rescue, later informing him that "I considered my choices and you…smelled better."
What I liked:
*The plot. The plot was interesting and creative.
*The characters. Villains aside, the various characters felt real and relatable.
*The town. The community was well-developed, and I'd say that the town WAS a character in and of itself.
What I didn’t like:
*This wasn't quite an instalove story, but I thought it came pretty close. Gabe and Alexandra become interested in one another pretty early on, and I felt that it was a bit too much, too soon.
*I personally found the number of antagonists difficult to keep track of. It didn't help that it takes me a long time to get through books these days. I would have benefited from a post-it note to stick onto my Kindle between readings.
Book recommendation: The 12 Brides of Summer (Collection 2) , which features Amanda Cabot.
The bottom line: This book feels like a clean Western romance with a bit of action and mystery. I'm sure this won't be the last Amanda Cabot story that I read.

Review:
The time period is 1850s in Texas Hill country. I am a reader who likes to know where places are. The Texas Hill region is “…widely accepted to be located in southwestern central Texas, west of Austin and north of San Antonio.“1
Some might review The Spark of Love as slow moving. I would not agree. The pacing steadily climbs as the mystery of Who is Who comes to light. Alexandra and Gabe like each other from the start BUT … Gabe *is* investigating her father. That presents a bit of a problem as their relationship deepens.
If you like a main female character to have a backbone, Alexandra does. She also has some pithy remarks like this one: “‘It wasn’t exactly trust. … I considered my choices and you …’ She wrinkled her nose. ‘Smelled better.'”
Alexandra did not leave New York because she didn’t like the suitor; she was AFRAID of him, justifiably so. You’ll learn enough about that guy in Chapter One and agree with her escaping.
I had not read the previous two books but The Spark of Love easily stands on its own. I’m sure several of the supporting characters are people from the previous books. However, the settings and dialogue are skillfully handled by author, Amanda Cabot. The reader does not feel like they “missed something”.
The simple sentence from the author’s synopsis, “But all is not as it seems.” Just keep that in mind as you read. There are some wonderful people and some that just **ACT** wonderful.
I enjoyed how the plot developed with its twists and turns. The book is 351 pages long so it isn’t a quick read. But it is a very satisfying one. And no, I won’t divulge what happens from Chapter Two on. I gave you a hint in the first chapter. Just know that things get dicey for the “good guys”.
In the “Author’s Letter” at the end of the story, Ms. Cabot states that it is “…time to move on to a new town”. So The Spark of Love is the final book in this series. Yes, I recommend this western romance with some mystery within.

The first two books in Amanda Cabot's Mesquite Springs series were two of my favorites I read in 2021, and I've been anxiously awaiting the third and final book ever since. The Spark of Love is a beautiful and perfectly satisfying conclusion to this wonderful series, and I can wholeheartedly say that this book lived up to every one of my expectations.
I truly adore Amanda Cabot's writing style, and the way she always manages to make the story come alive on the page to the reader. I found myself not wanting to put this one down once I started it, and I loved how it includes faith, friendship, a sweet romance, an emphasis on the importance of family, and many elements of both comedy and suspense.
Alexandra and Gabe's story is both heartwarming and heart wrenching, and I loved how the reader gets to follow along every tender moment of their journey. If you enjoyed the previous books in the series, then you'll also love the tidbits we get to see from other residents of Mesquite Springs, and I was especially happy to see two other beloved residents of this wonderful town get their own happily ever after.
Perhaps though, my favorite part of all, was the emphasis on the fact that none of us can ever be perfect on our own, and that we're never too far gone for Christ's sacrifice to apply to us as well. I love when an author can effortlessly blend the faith message into the actual storyline authentically, and Amanda Cabot does so beautifully.
I'm so sad to see this series come to an end, as I'm honestly not sure I'm ready to say goodbye to this town or its beloved characters. However, I can't wait to see what this author has in store for her readers in the future, and I'm already looking forward to her next release.

As Amanda and Gabe settle into small town life they are greeted warmly by the populace and soon have friends and job offers. But something is off. Several other strangers are in town and their motives are unclear. Amanda must uncover truths about her father, Gabe, and herself.
Spark of Love is a sweet love story. The characters are well developed, the plot has plenty of twist and turns. The ending is a foregone conclusion but the fun is in the getting there. Lovers of historical romance will enjoy this book.

Spark of Love is a sweet love story. The characters are well developed, the plot has plenty of twist and turns. The ending is a foregone conclusion but the fun is in the getting there. Lovers of historical romance will enjoy this book.

This is a wonderful novel written by Amanda Cabot!! I loved getting to know Alexandra and Gabe's story.......and all the others. I especially liked Frieda and Hans!! The storyline moves at a good pace. It has several twists and turns and I didn't want to put the book down. I thoroughly enjoy reading Amanda's books. I recommend if you like Historical fictional!!

I really enjoyed this sweet read! Apparently I haven’t read book 1 in the series (story of my life, lol), but I’ll make a point to do so. The characters are so enjoyable in this read, I’m sure I’ll enjoy it even with the inevitable references to events already past.
I learned quite a bit about a time and place in history I really didn’t know too much about. I did feel there were a couple too many points of view included for my taste (and the eARC formatting was a bit wonky, such that there was no demarcation between POV shift—so it was a bit jarring at times). But, it’s still a solid read and good conclusion to the Mesquite Springs trilogy! Worthwhile read.

What a powerful, satisfying conclusion to Ms. Cabot’s wonderful Mesquite Springs series! I thoroughly enjoyed returning to the fictional town of Mesquite Springs, Texas, to reconnect with some old friends and meet some exciting new ones. The characters in this story come to life and capture your heart. There are some I love (especially Alexandra and Gabe), some I strongly dislike, and others I was just not sure about until the story was over! The page-turning plot is rich with mystery and suspense and flows smoothly at a steady pace. Sweet romance and an inspiring faith thread with themes of forgiveness and trust add to the enjoyment of the read. Even though this is the third book in the series, it can easily be read as a standalone. I highly recommend this book and the series.

I’ve been looking forward to The Spark of Love ever since I read the wildly intriguing teaser for it in the previous book Dreams Rekindled. I’m happy to say the entirety of it lived up to my high expectations for the third installment of this brilliant series by Amanda Cabot.

Author Amanda Cabot has penned an intriguing and satisfying conclusion to her Mesquite Springs series. She introduces us to newcomers who are plagued by problems and secrets, and I especially enjoyed catching up with the people that I'd met in the first two books. The Spark of Love has conflict, mystery, and romance, but there's also a strong message of hope, love, and forgiveness woven into the story. This is historical Christian romance that you'll definitely want to read and savor!

This is the third book in the Mesquite Springs series. I don't remember reading the first two, so you can read this as a stand alone if you want--though you might understand more about the town and the minor characters in this book if you've read the other books in the series.
What I liked: the discussions of art--particularly what seems to be the early investigation of art therapy.
What confused me: the inconsistencies--it's okay for Alexandra to travel on her own to her cousin's in Saratoga Springs but not okay for her to travel on her own to Mesquite Springs, Texas.
What I disliked:
I'm tired of men pursuing wealthy women just for their money or in the hopes that the infusion of money will "save" the man. It's one thing if that type of relationship is what both parties want. (It wouldn't be what I want.) But Alexandra wants a loving relationship, not just a convenient one.
Too much coincidence: Sam just happens to have an anger problem and his pastor just happens to know of a program that Sam can go to and that program just happens to be the same one that tried to treat Jason Biddle. Gabe just happens to have been hired by Jason Biddle to find Calvin and Alexandra and just happens to end up lodging with Sam. All this in a tiny Texas town.

I really enjoyed this Historical, clean, western, romance. This was a advanced copy from the publisher and I voluntarily chose to review it. The heiress has a large amount of her own money. The Women in her family made it so it was passed down to the women in the family, not for their husbands. Until the men find out about the last stipulation, there are several suitors wanting to wed. Greed is an ugly thing when it goes unchecked. There is a bit of action in this and not so bad, good guys. And of course, several bad guys. All centered around this heiress, the battle keeps coming till the end.

Alexandra is a marvelous heroine. In the 1850s, when the book is set, women were not really expected to be strong-willed, outspoken, and independent. Yet she sets out for Texas alone to avoid an unpleasantly persistent suitor. She is clearly intelligent and not afraid to engage in the fine art of verbal self-defense. And she wants desperately for her father to get past his narrow, rather archaic mindset and see that she is capable and has skills that she can use. She makes herself useful, both to her father at the hotel and in her new role as the local school’s art teacher.
Gabe is a delightful hero as well. He may not be described as the most handsome man in the story, but we see that the prettiest face is not always the one that’s most worthwhile. He’s clearly taken with Alexandra, and he’s a good sport, too. I love the part where Alexandra is giving the Gottlieb twins painting lessons, and Gabe just rolls with it when the twins call him out for his poor artistic skills (as only young childen can do).
The supporting characters are wonderfully drawn, some loveable, some despicable. The Hill Country setting that Cabot describes makes me want to go visit. And the mystery and suspense woven throughout made the book hard to put down!
I laughed, I cheered, I booed, I jeered, I even teared up a little sometimes. I’m sad that this is the last of the Mesquite Springs series. I just got here, and I don’t want to leave! If you love historical fiction, clean romance, action, and suspense, you will adore The Spark of Love. I give it five shiny stars. The only thing that would have made it better was if it had included the recipe for that famous oatmeal pecan pie that was mentioned so often!

Have you ever read a book that just pulled you into it so deeply that you didn’t want to stop reading? The Spark of Love is one of those books. I am a new reader to Cabot and I was amazed at her world building. I felt like I was in Mesquite Springs with everyone, watching everything unfold. The characters felt like real people and I didn’t want the story to end. I loved Alexandra’s strength and goodness. She was such a strong woman and she had a giving heart. I was hoping she would stay safe and get her happily ever after. Gabe kept me on my toes trying to figure out if he would ever disclose to Alexandra his real purpose for being in Mesquite Springs. Everything just seemed to twist together in this story and it left me anxious for when it would unravel. The supporting characters were just as endearing as the main ones, and I felt like I was a part of Mesquite Springs. Although this is the third book in a series, you can read it as a standalone. I have not read the previous books and I didn’t feel lost or confused at any part of the book. I am now a fan of Cabot and look forward to reading more book by her! This is easily my favorite of the series! I really enjoyed this finale to the Mesquite Springs set. Gabe and Alexandra were good characters, and the mystery element that was woven into this story was one that held my attention. I also liked seeing familiar faces from the first two books in the set and catching up with them. I liked the ending for this one as it tied up all the pieces nicely as well. It's a quick and easy read with romance and mystery, which is a perfect combo in my book. If you like historical fiction with romance and mystery, I recommend this one!

After her mother dies, Alexandra’s father leaves her to be raised by her aunt. He visits only at Christmastime, even though Alexandra longs to live with him. Now that she is of marrying age, she realizes that her suitors are after the inheritance she received from her mother. One in particular seems dangerous when she turns him down, and she flees, in disguise, to what she believes to be a safe place: the hotel her father is building in Texas. Her would-be suitor has long arms, and he hires people to find her. Others are also interested in her fortune. On the way, she meets a gentleman on the stagecoach, and discovers that Gabe is going to same place she is. What she doesn’t know is why. When she arrives at the hotel, she senses that something is not right with her father. He doesn’t seem to want her there, but she is fearful to return to her aunt’s home, and talks her father into allowing her to stay. This historical romance is the third of the series, but can be read as a stand-alone. The characters are well developed, the setting is an interesting one, and the plot is engrossing. Though classified as a historical romance, there is quite a bit of suspense as well. Some of the characters are flawed, which leads to the topics of repentance and forgiveness. There are also Christian overtones; both Christian morals and beliefs are included. It’s quite an entertaining story, with heartaches and hopes, but with a mostly happy ending.

An entertaining read with instantly likable characters, and a engaging plot. I loved returning to Mesquite Springs with all of the familiar faces. I liked that Alexandra is a sensible young woman, who is capable of making her own decisions, though she is constantly underestimated by others. She handles many situations with grace, and I like that she keep trying to get to know her father better despite his initial reaction.
Gabe is a honorable man, who unknowingly walks into the situation and into Alexandra's life. I loved the interaction between him and Alexandra, and how he is always trying to do the right thing.
Overall, this was a wonderful read with a great plot and excellent characters. I especially liked how Sam and Laura befriend Alexandra and Gabe, and seeing more of their story.

Recently a question was posted in a Facebook Group that I absolutely had to answer. The question was how many Christian fiction authors have you read more than three of their books. My answer was that the list was too long to mention them all. There are some authors I've read everything they've written, others I've read all of a specific genre they've written, and others I've been a bit more picky about reading their offerings. Amanda Cabot would definitely fit in the category of authors I've read more than three of her books.
The Spark of Love is the final book in the Mesquite Springs series and can be read as a stand-alone, but it does help to read the others first. In this book, the reader almost needs a playlist to keep up with all the villains who populate the plot, and it's hard to figure out who some of the good guys are.
One of the most entertaining scenes is close to the beginning of the book when Alexandra is about to board a stagecoach. She attracts the unwanted attentions of two rough and rowdy cowboys and her rescue comes in the guise of Gabe Seymour, a private investigator who is looking for her father.
Alexandra is an heiress whose money is tied up in a trust that can only , but all her suitors know about her is that she has money. Franklin wants her money to settle his debts and will go to any length to get it. Because of his threats, Alexandra feels the need to flee New York. So she goes to Mesquite Springs, Texas, where her father is supposed to be building a hotel.
Gabe is looking for Alexandra's father because he was a con man who bilked people out of their money. He was not the only one looking for Alexandra's father, and between those looking for her father and those looking for her, both of them had their work cut out for them.
Alexandra's father is less than thrilled to see her and convinces Gabe to keep her away from the hotel he's building. At the same time Gabe feels the need to protect Alexandra.
This book is a bit predictable with the development of the plot, with the love story between Alexandra and Gabe, with the with the actions of the villains of the story, but the sheer number of bad guys is a bit daunting. The setting is a fictional town in Texas that fits with a number of places I know in Texas, so it is very believable. While this is not my favorite of Amanda Cabot's books, it is a worthwhile read.

What a great read! Alexandra had a large inheritance that she would be getting when she turned a certain age and she had many suitors but one only wanted the money and not Alexandra. She ran away and thought she was safe but would she be? And what else would she find out about her life. Would she end up being a spinster? A real page turner!

I was so looking forward to reading the last book in the Mesquite Springs series. I had enjoyed the first two books. I was disappointed in this book. It seems like there was a steady decline in my favor of these books.
First, it was too hard to understand with the almost immediate introductions of all the characters. It was hard to keep them straight. I think it would have been better to leave out some of them as some seemed to have the same part in the story. A very similar plot. Second, I hope this is something they fix as I read an ARC book. The problem was not a break in the layout to warn you that the scene had changed. I'd be reading along and the scene would change in the very next sentence. Sometimes it was the same character speaking but to another person. That was very disconcerting and hard to follow. The story did not flow well until the last quarter of the book. It was hard to follow.
Because of these things, I only give this a 3 out of 5-star review. If these issues are corrected the book will be a lot better. I asked to read and review this book through the Revell Reads program. All thoughts are my own, personal opinion.

Daughters need their fathers to be in their lives showing them love and support, and as true as that is for daughters today it was equally true for daughters throughout history. That includes the 1800s in Mesquite Springs, Texas where Alexandra went to try to reestablish a relationship with her father, who had turned her over to an aunt to raise after Alexandra’s mother died.
Alexandra is a strong, resourceful woman despite the influence of her Aunt Helen who tried to make her into a refined young lady with impeccable manners, well-versed in running a household and dealing with servants, and always knowing her place – perfect to be the wife of a wealthy prominent New York bachelor. Reading how Alexandra meets the challenges in Mesquite Springs that pushed against that refinement and that propriety was a delight. Her determination to be on her own and take care of herself, helps her see how important it is to respond to people differently from what she was taught. And she opens herself to be able to respond to the people she meets in Mesquite Springs, especially the handsome and intriguing Gabe.
Daughters also tend to put fathers on pedestals, no matter the circumstances, and when they fall sometimes the relationship can be shattered. Other times the relationship is only cracked but doesn’t break. I’m not going to reveal which it was for Alexandra and her father but the author does a wonderful job of making the reader wonder until the end of the story.
Adding to the drama and intrigue is the question of who wants to harm Alexandra and why? Has the suitor that she left in New York found her in Mesquite Springs and sent someone to force her to come back? But he wouldn’t want her dead. So why the near-death experiences at the fire and the accident with the horse? Revealing the answers to those questions was cleverly handled by the author, not giving anything away until the final resolution.
While filled with intrigue and mystery and clashes between the good guys and the not-so-good guys, this is in many ways a story about relationships, with even the minor ones intertwining with the main two – Alexandra’s relationship with her father and with Gabe. She doesn’t know how connected those relationships are until both are threatened, and how that threat is resolved is very satisfying.
There are many engaging minor characters, but the ones who charmed me the most, are Frieda and Hans; the nine-year-old twins whose mother had died recently. They’re students at the school where Alexandra teaches painting to all the children, and they touched my heart as well as Alexandra’s as she helped them process their grief through painting. That is a small revelation of how healing the arts can be, but also a huge revelation of how dedicated Alexandra is to her art, as well as her determination to belong to this town where she has found refuge – and maybe love forever and ever.
This is a terrific historical romance with a touch of mystery that readers will enjoy. The Christian elements are handled smoothly and fit comfortably in the narrative like a hand slipping into a lace glove.

That is a small revelation of how healing the arts can be, but also a huge revelation of how dedicated Alexandra is to her art, as well as her determination to belong to this town where she has found refuge – and maybe love forever and ever.
This is a terrific historical romance with a touch of mystery that readers will enjoy. The Christian elements are handled smoothly and fit comfortably in the narrative like a hand slipping into a lace glove.

I love books that carry me into their story so that I’m no longer reading. The Spark of Love is such a book. Author Amanda Cabot places the reader alongside Alexander Tarkington whose beauty and money threaten her life.
Set in the 1850’s, Alexander flees unsavory suitors and moves to be close to her father who abandoned her as a young girl after her mother died. However, Alexander is followed by desperate men, and her father doesn’t want her around.
Suspense and surprise are woven throughout this clean romance. It’s an easy book to curl up with and enjoy. The Spark of Love is book three in the Mesquite Springs series, however it can be read as a “stand alone.” Readers of Out of Embers (book one) and Dreams Rekindled (book two) will find their favorite characters, but they will be swept away with the new story of Alexander and Gabe, an investigator.
I appreciate how Cabot weaves in historical nuances as fashion, architect, and small-town culture. The settings are rich with detail. The characters are easy to identify with as they struggle with desires and make mistakes. Alexander must come to terms with who her father’s past and present actions. “It wasn’t the kind of love she’d wished for, but it was all he had to give.” As she accepts the truth, she finds the power of forgiveness.
Thank you, Amanda Cabot, for not only entertaining your readers, but for reminding us of how to live life fully with those closest to us.

An amazing conclusion to the Mesquite Springs series that will leave you not wanting it to end as the characters feel like old friends. Ms. Cabot always delivers a solid read of historical romance with a careful balance of mystery and suspense. Her unsavory characters can have you on the edge of your seat at times. In this installment you are as confused as Alexandra trying to determine who can be trusted. I found myself absorbed into Alexandra’s life and wanting to give her a big hug. It is a story of family hurts, finding and giving forgiveness, and new beginnings. You will envision the town of Mesquite Springs and want to live there. I loved that I was able to revisit old friends from the previous books as well as finding new favorites within these pages. One of my favorite parts was when the Pastor gave his sermon on anger and how it can destroy from the inside. I highly recommend The Spark of Love as well as the series. This is one of my go to authors that never disappoints.

Alexandra doesn’t really know who to trust in the new town of Mesquite Springs. Are the men she meets and who want to court her genuinely interested in her, her money, or something else?
Gabe Seymour was driven to find Calvin Tarkington to avenge his father’s death and the loss of his family’s money. What he was surprised to find out was Alexandra, Calvin’s daughter, was nothing like her father. She was generous and caring to all she met. She gave of herself and her time, even volunteer teaching art classes to the students. The growth seen in Alexandra’s confidence and trust were part of the story that I really enjoyed.
Calvin Tarkington’s secretive nature, ruthless men, and the “accidents” that keep happening to Alexandra give this story elements of mystery and danger. This is the third book in the Mesquite Springs series, but can be read as a stand alone. I didn’t read the other two books and was able to easily read it without prior knowledge. I recommend reading it if you like clean romance, westerns, Christian fiction, or mysteries.

With no profanity, topics of alcohol use, exploitation, illness, and death may not be appropriate for immature readers.
This ongoing story focuses on Alexandra Tarkington, the newcomer to Mesquite Springs who has fled an abusive suitor determined to marry her for her money. With her father building a hotel in town, the twenty-four-year-old woman is frustrated that she is never good enough. However, she befriends Gabe, an investigator who has been paid to find out if her father is a swindler. While trying to uncover the truth, not only do the two question their growing relationship, but they encounter two individuals who have ulterior motives.

I appreciate the detail the writer paints into this quaint town where everyone knows everyone else’s business. The characters show their strengths and weaknesses in how they react when things go wrong. As per the times, women were portrayed as not being able to handle what men could do, yet it was refreshing how the protagonist challenged her father and others.
~ Why Not ~
Those who do not like stories about living in a small Texan town in the 1850s and old-fashioned romances will pass on this series. Some who do not have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ may not care for the prayers, references to God, and added sermon, but they are not the focal point or overdone. Others may find it predictable, but it is a nice read.
~ Wish ~
Properly disciplining one of the main characters for his misdeeds should have been addressed further. I prefer all pronouns of God capitalized for reverence.
~ Want ~
If you are a fan of small-town living where there is intrigue and mystery among the gossip, this sweet story will spark your interest while dealing with finding true love, handling anger, and learning to forgive.

Alexandra Tarkington is an heiress, but she's also one smart cookie. With a romantic disaster on the horizon, she sets off by herself from New York to Texas. What's the big deal? Well, it's the 1850s and a woman traveling alone can be dangerous. Using padding to hide her figure and dust to cover her hair, she still manages to meet a nice man, Gabe, on the stagecoach. Nice – hmmm – he is also out to prove that Alexandra's father is swindling people. Two more characters are out to find this heiress – the spurned almost fiancé and someone bent on revenge. While Alexandra is trying to make a life for herself, making friends, painting pictures for her dad's hotel and teaching art at the school, Gabe may have fallen in love. Not surprisingly, Alexandra is starting to have romantic thoughts right back.
The romance is very light and consistent with the time period of waiting for an official courtship to make feelings known. The town of Mesquite Springs may be small but there are huge things on the horizon and turning pages, I quickly got immersed into the 'what will happen next' drama and enjoyed every page.
While this is the third book in the series, they do not have to be read in order. Each is a separate story, with the common thread being the town of Mesquite Springs and different characters highlighted in each book.
This is the perfect weekend read, beach read or just want to be entertained read!

The Spark of Love by Amanda Cabot is a sweet historical romance paired with mystery and a bit of suspense.
While I did not enjoy The Spark of Love as much as I’ve enjoyed other Amanda Cabot books, I still consider it a good read.
Gabe is a solid hero with a sense of integrity and a backstory that explains his actions and thought process. Alexandra’s determination and insecurities make her a relatable heroine who is easy to root for.
Those this is part of a series, it can be read as a standalone. I have not read the previous books but was able to follow along. I am intrigued, though, and would not mind reading the other two books now that I’ve been introduced to the characters.
The mystery aspect was compelling, and Cabot managed to build some suspense. While providing the antagonists’ viewpoints did up the suspense, some of the scenes showing their thought process were so short, I found myself wondering if they could have been cut. I’ve decided that, overall, the scenes did help move the book along and give the reader insight into why the villains acted the way they did. For me, though, the most compelling mystery was the truth behind Alexandra’s father.
There’s also some great discussions about faith, belonging to God, and dealing with anger and vengeance. Alexandra’s spiritual arc hit me the most, and I think several readers will find hers relatable.
Overall, The Spark of Love is a sweet story historical romance fans will love.
