When I picked up Inappropriate by Sherry Morris I didn’t know what to expect. I figured maybe a romance with a little mystery thrown in, or a cozy mystery, even some kind of thriller. What I got was a crazy, fun romp of a tale that recalls other humorous Florida capers such as novels by Carl Hiaasen, Tim Dorsey, Dave Barry, and others whose works provide wacky characters and plenty of humor.
Morris only starts her narrative in Florida, but the tale soon turns into a cross-country adventure full of surprises, head-shaking bad decisions, and a train full of crazies and weirdos. It’s almost a parody of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express. And it’s a hoot.
Nearly everyone we meet, including Sandra Faire, through whose eyes we see the story unfold, moves at breakneck speed through the narrative. Once you’ve suspended your disbelief enough to just go with the flow, it’s a fun read. Do your best to try to keep up with the fast pace, unexpected events, strange clues, and the never-ending flow of quirky characters.
That doesn’t mean all the characters are realistic. Most aren’t. Sandra herself makes very bad decisions from the first, and sometimes is more a hindrance to solving the mystery than a help—and she’s the main person trying to solve it. It’s not always easy to know where the plot is headed, but that’s part of the fun.
Some may be put off by the confusing twists in the action or by some of the unbelievably weird characters who constantly weave their way in and out of the plot. But that’s the wrong approach. The characters are meant to be over-the-top and the meandering plot is more a showcase for the quirky cast than a storyline. Don’t judge the novel based on what it’s not. It’s supposed to be fun, even silly at times. You just have to go with it.
I had high hopes for this book, but ultimately it was just a mess. Too "cutesy" by half with character names. Nonsensical things happening with no real explanation as to why they happened or what they meant. Plot threads that went absolutely nowhere. I really wanted to like it, but in the end, nope. My money would have been better spent on something else.
