Arthur Livingston's goal in life is to make his mark on the world as a mining industrialist, but after the man who could help him achieve his goal is murdered, Arthur feels compelled to seek justice for the family—but he's left with more questions than answers after the eccentric Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency refuses to take on his case.

Desperate to conceal her real identity and avoid the irritatingly handsome Arthur, Eunice takes on a different case that requires her to go deep undercover and entangles her in one troublesome situation after another. Fun and meaningful addition to the series.

In this third installment of the Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency series, Arthur Livingston enters the Agency in order to hire them to find a missing heiress named Eugenia, whose family is about to have her declared dead if she doesn't appear to claim her inheritance soon. Eunice Holbrooke meets with him shrouded in her widow's weeds, but she knows what he doesn't--she is actually Eugenia and she has no desire to claim her inheritance. The more Eunice discovers, however, means she needs to do the right thing, even if it is risky in many ways.

Turano's books are always completely delightful and filled with humor and heart. The banter between Eunice and Arthur is snappy and keeps the story moving forward. There are so many hidden secrets that I was engrossed throughout wanting to know who had killed Eunice's grandfather and who might be after her. There are surprises in every chapter and I loved the ending, getting caught up with the lives of all of the characters.

There is a subtle, but very tender and meaningful faith message about the truth and how it can set one free, and trusting God with your life. If you are looking for a lighthearted, yet intriguing historical novel, then look no further than Jen Turano's books and you won't be disappointed.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, all opinions are my own.

'How can you honestly think a woman who shot you is going to want to marry you?'

When Jen Turano began The Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency series, I was so much looking forward to the mysterious Eunice's story. Eunice, who wears widow's weeds and several veils at a time. And Turano does not disappoint.

It seems Eunice has some serious secrets in her past and in one evening, they have turned up to smack her right in the face and she is at a loss as to how to handle it. Eunice, who seems to have an answer for everything.

Turano is the best with her dry wit, let me tell you. Her books never fail to bring me to absolute hilarity! She is completely perfect in her genre. Reading her books bring me such complete joy! Well done!

My thanks to Bethany House Publishers for a copy of this book via Net Galley. The review here is my own opinion.

My personal Rating- Four Stars

What a good conclusion to this trilogy! Everything was definitely wrapped up with a bow for every character and I really enjoyed the epilogue.

Hidden identities and family company drama are two of my favorite tropes, so I really liked those parts and was pleased with how different parts happened. There is a lot of information and stories thrown at the reader in the first hundred pages, therefore be prepared to catch it all to understand details later. It wasn’t too overwhelming, but I did struggle with keeping track of everyone in her extended family.

I only have two things I wish would have been different: 1.) I wish the faith content had been a little more apparent all through the story, as the majority of the faith content was mainly in two sections last a couple pages each time, but I liked what was discussed. And 2.) There were a couple comments/mentions that I thought were unneeded, personally.

While I wouldn’t call this one near my favorite books by this author, it was still a really enjoyable read and I liked Eunice quite a bit. She’s intrigued me since her first mention in the first book of this trilogy and I was so excited to finally get her story and to get to know her. The phrase “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” comes to mind when thinking about our mysterious boardinghouse owner. This was definitely a good ending to a fun series and I’m quite satisfied by it.

I liked it!

I like this author's writing style! It seems like a marionette show where each movement is exasperated. Here the exasperation is in the dialogue!
But, strangely, it doesn't bother me at all - on the contrary it's funny and makes me laugh! Because nobody talks like that! LOL

That said, I enjoyed the MCs! Eunice (or Eugenia) was really strict, but the above said exaspartion make her funny! Meanwhile Arthur was hilarious in his difficulties to say and do the right thing!

Is the story believable? No, you have to suspend belief to enjoy it! Because of all the exasperation it seems like a comedy. You remember the Charlie Chaplin mute movies? It's like that! But I enjoyed them all the same, so for me this was a very enjoyable read!

It has been quite a while since I read a Jen Turano book and it was so much fun to dive back into one. So, I picked up To Disguise the Truth, and even though it is book three in the series, I had no trouble enjoying this story even though I had not read the previous two novels.

As with all of this author’s works, there was plenty of humor, but I especially liked the witty dialogue between Arthur and Eunice all through the book. I really enjoyed learning their backstory and watching as they got to know each other again in this novel.

There were so many interesting settings in this book, too, and although humor flowed throughout the novel, there was also deeper subject material, such as they way women were treated in insane asylums back in that time period. The faith message and romance was also very natural to the story.

This novel was a lot of fun to read, especially the second half of it, when so many twists and turns began to come to light and the author wove everything together into a truly satisfying happily ever after.

You have to love a story where you learn on the first page that the heroine has shot the hero in the arm in the past. Jen Turano’s To Disguise The Truth is book three in the Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency series, but a stand alone novel. Arthur and Eunice’s story is an absolute delight!

I have wanted to know Eunice’s backstory since book one in the series. She is so intriguing, and makes you wonder. Why does she wear Widow’s weeds with dark veils? Why is she so secretive? How does she have such unusual skills? Inquiring minds want to know!

I fell in love with Arthur as the story progressed. Truly a great hero with a wonderful heart. His dialogue with Eunice was fantastic. We all need an Arthur in our lives.

The story had many twists and turns that led to me laughing out loud as I was never sure what was going to happen next. The secondary characters were endearing and I felt like I was often in the middle of a very entertaining family gathering. I was immersed in the story.

To Disguise the Truth is in an exciting, funny, plot twisting tale that I thoroughly enjoyed. It is an ideal read that kept me smiling. I highly recommend this story.

I was given a complimentary copy and not required to write a positive review.

Another fun read from the delightful Jen Turano. I've been waiting to know Eunice's story, and this book is a fun ready that includes so many of the characters I've come to know and love in the series. A book Jen's fans will thoroughly enjoy.

The mystery that interlays this story is compelling and there's enough twists that every time I thought I'd identified whodunit, I second-guessed. Ultimately I was right, but I never sank into that fact. The romance was sweet and tension-filled. It was a delight to be reunited with so many characters that I enjoyed and to see the finale of their stories.

Jen is an author I can depend on for a wonderful read!

Eunice Holbrooke has been the most mysterious character of the series. Delightful to get her background. The conclusion to the series is full of smiles and a bit of history too (asylums).

"Considering she'd once shot the man sitting across from her, Eunice Holbrooke was beginning to get the sneaking suspicion her past had finally caught up to her."

Thank goodness, she was completely covered in layers and layers of black fabric, complete with triple weeping veils and a disguised voice. . . . Eunice could only hope and pray that Arthur Livingston wouldn't recognize her. Not now, not ever. The exasperating man wanted to hire the Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency (her agency!) to locate a missing person, only Eunice could vouch for the fact (on a stack of Bibles, if asked) that the young woman in question wasn't missing at all, but rather hiding in plain sight. His plain sight.

Dashing off to go undercover in an attempt to avoid Mr. Livingston, Eunice finds herself in an even deeper predicament, when what to her wondering eyes should appear in her moment of need (though she would refrain from admitting it) but Arthur Livingston.

This story was absolutely delightful from beginning to end, for there is certainly no lack of entertaining conversations combining with a massive number of underlying conundrums that have more layers that Eunice's widow's weeds. Would anyone figure out anything? The crux of the matters have lain hidden under disguises for way too long; the question being, can the truth find a way to set them all free? And doggone it, Eunice and Arthur need to merge their "romantic sides" in more ways than one.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher, the opinions stated above are entirely my own.

:-) That's me, wearing my Cheshire Cat grin all the way through this sidesplitting, action-packed and ever-so-witty conclusion to the Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency series. Brilliant! Brilliant! Brilliant! And the opening scene sets it off to a rip-roaring mayhem of a start! No one can write cheery bedlam with the finesse and flare of Jen Turano! I still have stitches in my sides from the rapid-fire dialogue liberally peppered with hidden barbs. Have I said brilliant already? I think I have, but really, what else is there for a reviewer to say? Magnificent? Splendid? Glorious? Yes, yes and yes!!!

I've been intrigued by Eunice from the very first book and have been anxiously anticipating the big reveal of her back story and the author does not disappoint. It's complicated (of course) and fraught with danger (of course) and there's suddenly a time crunch that increases urgency and raises the potential of danger. Meanwhile, Eunice is deep undercover in the unlikeliest of places. Which means more danger. More time sensitive dilemmas.

The Agency is at it's finest here with Eunice leading the charge and so many of our much loved characters backing her up with their unique talents and insights. Bwahahaha! I don't think you necessarily have to read the first two books before reading this one, but you'll definitely enjoy it more if you do 'cause you'll get all the inside jokes.

Oh -- and romance abounds! Not just between Arthur and Eunice but...well, you'll just have to read the book to find out where else Cupid's arrow lands.

The grandest of grand finales, To Disguise the Truth might just be my favourite Bleecker Street Agency story.

Oh -- and I enjoyed listening to the audible edition of this book narrated by Andrea Emmes. She's done a fabulous job with the entire series and the way she delivers those humdinger one-liners...laugh out loud funny, that's what!

It must be somewhat disconcerting – and more than a bit comical – to be hired to find yourself… but readers have grown to expect nothing less from a Jen Turano read! The author is skilled at putting her characters into awkwardly delightful & hilarious predicaments, and the one in which our dear Eunice finds herself at the start of To Disguise the Truth may be the most intriguing yet!

Fans of The Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency series have been fascinated from book one by Eunice’s general mysteriousness. We weren’t quite sure whether her ever present widow’s weeds and heavy veils were a classic Turano quirk for a future heroine or if they indeed served a disguising purpose. As you might guess by the title of this third book, we get the answers we’ve been waiting for – and what a delicious dish of intrigue, mystery, and family drama it turns out to be! I thoroughly enjoyed watching her story unfold and getting to really know her character a lot better. While I’ve always been interested in Eunice for reasons I’ve already explained, I truly came to love her in To Disguise the Truth.

And Arthur. Ah, Arthur. I wasn’t quite sure that any man could replace Norman Nesbit as my favorite Turano hero, but Arthur definitely gives him a run for his money. Equal parts awkward and endearing, he and Eunice have an interesting history, and their present seems to be off to a similar start.

“Considering she’d once shot the man sitting across from her, Eunice Holbrooke was beginning to get the sneaking suspicion her past had finally caught up to her.”

Right from the first line of this hilarious story, I was chuckling at what I knew would be a certainly fun path to happily-ever-after for these two characters. Needless to say, I was right and the bumps along the way (in quintessential Turano fashion) made it all the more so.

But there’s also a couple of more serious points that, while not overshadowing the romcom nature of the story in any way, bear mentioning. First is a brief look at the horrible conditions that women found themselves after being (often forcibly and deviously) committed to the insane asylums of Gilded Age New York. (Side note: Is it too much to hope that we might see a future spin-off series from this author related to some of the characters we met there?) Second, there is a subtle but sweet faith-related thread that is so timely to the world in which we find ourselves. Both of these subplots add further layers to the main characters & remind us that even hilarity can be meaningful when you look closely enough.

Bottom Line: To Disguise the Truth is another wonderful foray by Jen Turano into Gilded Age New York – the good, the bad, and the ugly sides of this storied time in US History. Vividly drawn characters, hilarious hijinks, and lots of heart grace these pages, as well as a swoony romance (with a man who wants it to be known that he knows his way around a kiss!) and answers readers have been waiting for. Eunice and Arthur are delightful in every way, as are all the supporting players we get to visit with along the way. A must-read if you want to be uplifted with the power of laughter & love!

Eunice Holbrook is an heiress who went East and is trying to disguise herself in New York City so that she isn't recognized after someone tries to kill her grandfather as she thinks they may try to kill her too. To hide herself she wears widows veils and blends in with a new life and identity--until one day Arthur Livingston shows up at her detective agency to hire them to look for HER.

In To Disguise the Truth by Jen Turano, Eunice is a complex character with an interesting past within a dysfunctional family. She also remembers Arthur Livingston because her grandfather wanted her to marry him and have him take over the family business. Neither Arthur nor Eunice were too keen on that idea. . .do they still feel that way?

I have not read the other books in the Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency series, but I enjoyed To Disguise the Truth as a stand alone. I am sure it would be even better if a reader has read the other two books in the series. I enjoyed the quick wit and the banter between the characters in this book. I also enjoyed getting to know most of the characters--not so much the bad guys, but the rest were interesting. There was some romance that was swoonworthy. This is mostly a clean book with a bit of a Bible verse towards the end of the book that comes from the grandmother's Bible. I liked how Turano wove that in to the book. I also enjoyed the mystery. Turano kept me guessing for a long time as to who the bad guy was. There were also some other surprises in To Disguise the Truth that made it fun to read and kept me turning pages quickly right through to the end.

It was amazing! Loved it! A great conclusion to the series. I had been excited to learn Eunice's backstory and it was so much more than I imagined. I don't want to say too much as you need to read this to find out all the twists and turns. I was captivated from beginning to end.

Outrageous fun!
In the conclusion to the series we finally get to find out why Eunice dresses in all black with numerous veils to hide her identity. All is revealed when Arthur Livingston hires Eunice to find a missing heiress. When she vehemently discourages him, the fun is non-stop especially with her eclectic group of inquiry agents, a bodyguard and a Pinkerton helper.
Originally wanting to marry Eunice “for her own good”, Arthur changes his opinion of Eunice: “she was a delightful mix of practical, whimsy and dry wit, with her admission about having a romantic nature adding depth to her he had not realized existed.” And what could be more romantic than a man who gifts her with Pride and Prejudice, reads it to her and “knows his way around a good kiss.”
Then there is narrowing down the list of suspects in the murder of her grandfather. “Vincent should go on the list simply because there is something shifty about a bookstore owner who doesn’t sell Jane Austen.”
What happens when Eunice decides the truth will set her free? You will have to see for yourself as you read this delightful, comedic book. You will want to read the whole series!

A Historical Christian Romance set in 1887 New York, filled with sweet PG romance and a mystery that has lots of twists and shocking revelations. While this book is part of a series that can easily be read as a stand-alone,I hadn’t read the previous books and had no trouble following the story at all.

"Considering she'd once shot the man sitting across from her, Eunice Holbrook was beginning to get the sneaking suspicion her past had finally caught up with her." Jen Turano – ToDisguise the Truth

The story follows Eunice, the owner of The Bleeker Street EnquiryAgency, as she hides her identity from the world to protect herself from a mysterious murderer of her past. Unfortunately, her past catches up to her as Arthur comes into the story. He tries to find Eunice to get her to go back to her hometown to claim the inheritance that her Grandfather left her. But she is afraid to go back as the person who murdered her grandfather is still at large, which means she might be in danger too.

While the story starts with a bang it quickly gets sidetracked with Eunice going undercover in an insane Asylum, this part was entertaining. but felt like it was added just to make the book a bit longer. After she completes her undercover task the story becomes drawn out repeating how Eunice feels about going back home and the tension between her and Arthur so many times it started to get a bit repetitive.

All the characters were likeable and the women were portrayed as strong and independent even though the story takes place at a time when women were seen as lesser. The romance between Eunice and Arthur was sweet and intriguing with a lot of fun banter and flirting.

“Feeling a tingle of something delicious travel through her over the possibilities…” Jen Turano – To Disguise the Truth

There are a lot of plot twists in the story that fuels the mystery which the readers won't see coming and little bits of wisdom that were enjoyable.

“Merely a book should never be said to an avid reader…” Jen Turano – To Disguise the Truth

Although the book is a Christian romance it was subtle and well incorporated within the story even though the ending seemed unrealistic since Eunice would be considered a saint for how she handled her family.

A slow mystery with a touch of romance perfect for the reader that’s looking for a clean romance with a bit of intrigue.

Jen's done it again! Her books never DISAPPOINT and this one is spectacular. Between the characters Jen creates, the mystery angle in each story and the superb humor contained in every book, her books are always at the top of my reads list. Eunice and Arthur are fun characters and extremely likeable and along with the cast of secondary characters make for quite a fun story. I also really enjoyed the secondary mystery and the elements that brings to the story. The way the puzzle pieces of the mystery come together is fantastic and the ending is lovely. If you like historical fiction, fantastic humor, and a fun mystery, don't miss a Jen Turano novel!

Wow. Just wow. This plot was certainly something. I usually can predict most plots, but this one led me on a merry chase before completely blind sighting me. This plot was absolutely more complex and more developed than any of the other works done (outside this series) by this author. I’m really happy I gave her books a third shot since this series is a true treasure.

Also, I like how this book addresses the terrible state of asylums back in this era.

I am continuing to read this series out of order since, for some reason, my library had book 2 and 3 on audio, but I have to request book 1 and wait to see if they get it.

I enjoyed the humor in book 2 "To Write a Wrong" and, as I was dealing with a lot of stress IRL, I was hoping this third book would also be funny. There was some humor (the part where Eunice was beating up the jerky nurses at the ladies insane asylum was pretty hilarious, not to mention satisfying) but overall, I felt there was a bit more drama in this one than comedy. As I said in my updates, that's not a bad thing or a critique, but I'm very new to this author and still learning what to expect from her, so it didn't necessarily meet my expectations/hopes in that regard.

I'm also not a particular fan of books that feature the corrupt insane asylums that were used and abused during this time period. When the synopsis said Eunice goes deep undercover, it doesn't say where, but it turns out it was at one of these asylums. I don't like books about those places because it's angering to read of the stupidity that went on. Anyone could have a person committed, whether because there was actually something wrong with them, or because a man didn't like a woman's attitude, or simply wanted her out of his way. As shown in this book, the "doctors" in the asylums were either wildly incompetent, stupid, or corrupt, because they'd "confirm" the woman's insanity with idiotic tests like feeling her scalp and looking at her tongue and somehow this indicated her mental state??? Then the "nurses" were abusive, pinching and slapping patients who didn't follow instruction, and sometimes locking them in a dark room with no food or water for hours BECUSE THAT'S A GREAT WAY TO TREAT ANY PERSON, MUCH LESS ONE WITH MENTAL ILLNESS. *FUMES* *calms down* You see how stories like that make me feel? Historically accurate, but infuriating, which is why I just tend to not want to read about it.

I will say, however, that Turano at least didn't make this element take over the entire story. Eunice was only there for a few chapters, AND it wasn't too intense, either. Angering, but not frightening or stressful. Also, as mentioned above, Eunice got to beat up some stupid, mean, incompetent nurses, so there's that, too.😛

After we got past the asylum, there was more focus on relational drama and the mystery of figuring out who killed Eunice's grandfather. There was a little section immediately after the asylum part, with Eunice and Arthur dealing with their shared past that didn't hold my attention super well. This was partly because I had so much IRL stress and distraction happening, but I also didn't initially care that much about Arthur as the hero? He got better later, but I just didn't connect with him at first and it was probably because of the flaws Eunice herself pointed out that he later recognized in himself and made the choice to change, thus becoming more likable. And once it got more into the mystery, I started paying better attention, and the reveals were very twisty and turn-y and interesting.

I feel like at some point when there's not so much life stress going on, I should come back to this book and give the second half a more focused re-read/re-listen as I feel like I haven't given it a fair chance by being so distracted while trying to get through it. Still, the fact that it was able to entertain me despite the intense real life stress and distraction says something for the story. I think I'm going to give it 3 stars right now and hopefully give it a re-read at a later, less stressful, date with the hope of increasing my rating to a 4 if not 5.

Aaahhh!! Be still my romantic heart! *swoon*

We got Eunice’s story, and it was so worth the wait. 😍

I LOVED finally seeing all of Eunice’s mystery revealed! I loved getting to see more of HER, and not just the persona she put on before. She was such a fun character who possessed more feelings than she showed. She was strong, but not so strong that she couldn’t accept help when needed.

I adored Arthur! He was such a sweetheart and I loved how he cared for Eunice from the beginning. (Whether he knew it or not)
He was a wonderful lead, and was perfect for Eunice. (As she was for him)

I loved how they admitted to purposely getting on each other nerves just to get a debate out of each other! But when it mattered they were honest with each other and leaned on each other for help.

The “mystery/family drama” aspect was fun for me! I enjoyed all the secrets and twists. I did see part of it from the beginning, but not all so it was still a fun revelation.

I loved seeing ALL the Bleeker Street girls getting their happily ever afters. It just made me all smiling and happy!
I literally sat pretty much the whole time I was reading with a grin on my face. (Which happens any time I read a Jen book 😝)

This book - this series - just made me happy! I’ve enjoyed every story and every moment. I’m anxious to see what Jen has for us next!
4.5/5 stars

I was hooked from the first line, “Considering she’d once shot the man sitting across from her, Eunice Holbrooke was beginning to get the sneaking suspicion her past had finally caught up to her.”

This story is everything I look forward to in a Jen Turano historical mystery, from the witty dialogue, crazy situations, strong women in this novel get themselves into and barely get out of. This story is a delight to read as the author takes readers away from the cares of this world to a place filled with humor, heart and how Eunice and Arthur try to outwit each other. It’s a delight to read.

Eunice finds herself in a vulnerable place, which she prides herself in being strong and capable of not being in this situation. Has she gone too far this time? Will Arthur Livingstone, find what Eunice has been desperately to hide. Would they get to the bottom of these hidden secrets? Who killed Eunice’s grandfather, and how is trying to kill her?

I also enjoyed the natural spiritual thread woven into the story about trusting God and how the truth will set you free. This is a fun get away and one that would work well for your next book club pick.

I’m a huge fan of Jen Turano’s books and To Disguise the Truth didn’t disappoint. Right from the fantastic opening line Turano drew me in and kept me turning the pages with the wit and charm of her very quirky but endearing characters.

Her most recent heroine, Eunice Holbrooke, was no exception. Unwilling to shed the Widow’s Weeds she has been wearing throughout the series, Eunice finds herself confronted with a man from her past when her newest potential client wants to hire the Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency to find HER!! Although Arthur Livingston’s appearance may seem a bit brash at first, he does have a heart of gold and turns out to be a perfect match for Turano’s feisty heroine.

Although you are sure to laugh out loud while reading this book, To Disguise the Truth, like all of Turano’s novels sheds light on some aspect of history that readers may not be well-acquainted with. In this novel, the author examines the conditions inside mental asylums and how horribly easy it was for a woman to be committed during the nineteenth century when Eunice goes undercover on a case at the Blackwell Island Insane Asylum.

I loved that Turano incorporated all of the characters from the series, even if some had only a brief appearance on the page. What a fun way to wrap up the series.

I listened to this book on Audible and would like to say that the narrator, Andrea Emmes, did a fantastic job bringing the characters to life, especially Turano’s hilarious one-liners. If you enjoy audiobooks, I highly recommend this series!

If you enjoy a light-hearted mystery filled with twists, turns, and plenty of witty banter, then you’re sure to be delighted with To Disguise the Truth.

Each book I've read by Jen Turano gets better and better. I love reading her Regency romances because her stories are engaging, fun, and makes me laugh. I've always wondered what Eunice's story was and now I know. She is an interesting and complex person. I liked Eunice and Arthur's interaction. It's fun to watch them along with the other characters in this story. I like how the different Inquiry agents are mentioned in the sorry and throughout the series.
I don't have a favorite character because they were all great in their own way. The mystery of who killed her Grandfather kept me reading until the end. I am looking forward to her next story!

Ever since the first book I have been wanting to know more about Eunice and I finally got to read all about her and it was so much fun! If you have read the series so far you will know that the character of Eunice was unique and a bit mysterious. I mean the gal wore all black and a gigantic veil to cover herself. She was constantly in mourning clothes but at the same time she started the Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency to help others. So she has an adventurous streak to her and boy do we see everything revealed about her when Arthur Livingston shows up!

Goodness I loved their banter and tension they had. It made this story so entertaining and just kept you reading to see what was going to happen. But it's not all comedy, there is also a mystery surrounding this story and some twists I did not expect. I'm not going to reveal much of the story because it was so good and you should really read it for yourself. I will say that Jen really did a fantastic job with the characters. They were engaging and relatable. Although at first I did not know what to think of Arthur I absolutely loved him. He was the perfect leading gentleman.

I will say that the ending felt a bit rushed but I think its just me and my greedy reading self. I wanted to know more about the other characters and feel like some could have their own stories. Despite my greediness the ending was good and it closed up the series well. I can't wait to see what her next book will be all about. I highly recommend you grab this one and although technically you could read this as a stand alone but I recommend you grab the first book so you get to know these characters better and get well acquainted with them.

I received this book from the publisher Bethany House. I was not required to post a positive review. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

This book is SO GOOD. I knew from the first book that Turano would do something VERY INTERESTING with Eunice, and I was not disappointed (I know book 3 is supposed to be the star of the show and all, but LET ME MAKE IT CLEAR that Daphne is still my favorite. I think because I could totally BE DAPHNE).

Ok, so the first several chapters that take place in the Agency are just...hysterically brilliant.

Ohh...there's so much detail I could go into, but it would be so SPOILER-Y!!! I can't do it. I'll just say: Eunice is awesome, Arthur wound up being a sweetheart, certain family members were just a delight, and the agency ladies and gentlemen were wonderful.

I actually wanted to give the book 5 stars, but when a character started throwing about all of this "my truth" stuff, I grooooaaaaned. Number one, it's modern lingo in a historical setting. Number two, there is only Truth, THE Truth. Truth is not subjective. Yes, I can have "the truth about me", but the truth isn't MINE. I don't OWN Truth. It just IS. Grammatically, it just doesn't make sense. I just can't do this expression.

"He didn’t want demure, proper, and well-connected. He wanted direct, temperamental, romantic at heart, and independent. In other words, he wanted Eunice."

Well sadly I didn't feel the buzz of fun when reading this historical romance/cozy mystery in comparison to the first two books in the series. I felt that there was something a tad lacking that had me speed reading to get to the end.

Maybe it was the reveal on top of reveal in this convoluted murder mystery that came on the heels of the asylum plot that felt less oh more intrigue and rather seriously theres more?

description

Which isn't exactly the feeling you want to get when reading a kind of thriller. Plus the killer reveal and familial resolutions were kind of flat.

Also the romance was...almost non-existent. I didn't feel the connection between these two characters- and in fact noted down at some points that Arthur was a tad unlikable and really rather pushy. I did like Eunice as a character though, but didn't see their connection.

Might read on to the next book- but that really depends on who the FL will be and the blurb.

If you haven't read a Jen Turano book then you are in for a fun surprise. Her writing is so unique and clever that she really stands out as an author. While this wasn't my favorite book of hers, I still enjoyed the humorous story line. The characters in this book are actually well developed and I felt like I got to know them by the end of the book. I liked the setting but the banter between each person is just the best. I love the hilarious snippets that is in all of Turano's novels but this one really had some zingers. The Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency is interesting and there were some parts that I found to be a bit slow or drawn out. But for an "entertaining, somewhat silly, yet deep down has depth story" it is a fun read.

Four stars.

Eunice Holbrooke's past catches up with her when a man comes to hire her to find herself!

Arthur Livingston is shocked when the Bleaker Street Inquiry Agency refuses his case, but he is intrigued by the eccentric and mysterious woman behind the veil. As Eunice's past becomes impossible to ignore they must fight together to discover the truth.

Jen Turano is back again with another delightfully humorous adventure. I loved getting to know Eunice better in this book, finally discovering some of the secrets from her past. Arthur is a kind and honorable man, and he doesn't mind going off on tangents with Eunice.

Overall this is such a fun read, though at times I thought that off topic conversations could run too long into distraction. I loved the humor and interactions, this was a fun read, and didn't disappoint!

I received a complimentary ecopy of this book. My opinions are my own.

This book was quite a journey…one where you go from place to place and suddenly find yourself in an original Clue story!

Characters: What really stood out to me—and I loved—about Eunice was that she was direct/blunt at times AND still humble enough to admit when she was wrong. There are far too many leading ladies with strong personalities out there that act petty and hold a grudge. This gal was independent yet not domineering. That was refreshing to me. I also enjoyed seeing many of the other characters from the first book. I chose to skip the second book due to some potential trigger warnings by another reviewer, but I didn’t feel like I had missed anything.

Plot: As I mentioned first, this story was quite busy (in a good way). I wondered how it would all work together 😉 It covered a lot of time and events. Still rarely did I feel it dragged (only during a couple of convos that filled us in on backstory, but those helped explain other parts). It was hard to keep track of who was who in the Mason family—they were QUITE a mess!

Faith content: I would have preferred to see more. Faith is mentioned vaguely some, as well as church. Still there’s very minimal personal walk with the Lord in this book or the first one for that matter.

Romance: Clean. Mentions of wanting to kiss and kisses closer to the end, but not extensively detailed.
They liked each other but developed friendship first. Other characters stare at each other—those parts are comical and meant to be … I think 🤣

Conclusion: I enjoyed all the Bleeker Street Ladies! This book was my favorite, and I would read it again. I almost wish Jen Turano would go against her norm and add a fourth book or a novella to see what other adventures these independent agents have. 😊

Content: murder, attempted murder, abuse in insane asylums (nonsexual), other violence.
