뱀파이어와 인간의 혼혈 ‘담피르’인 벤자민. 담피르는 뱀파이어의 기척을 느낄 수 있으며 평범한 방법으로도 그들을 죽일 수 있는 유일한 천적이다. 그의 어머니는 오로지 자신을 욕보인 뱀파이어를 죽이기 위해 벤자민을 길렀다. 한줌의 애정도, 관심도 주지 않고.
그러던 어느 날, 벤자민은 뱀파이어인지 인간인지 기척이 헷갈리는 인물을 만나게 된다. 그의 이름은 ‘밀러 오도노휴’. 영국 정보국 M16 국장인 밀러는 최근 런던에서 일어나는 연쇄 살인 사건의 범인이 뱀파이어라고 보고, 뱀파이어를 죽이기 위해 존재하는 경찰조직 MKV와 합동으로 수사를 진행하기 위해 찾아왔다.
MKV 소속인 벤자민은 그의 정체가 의심스럽지만 수사를 위해 어쩔 수 없이 함께 어울리게 된다. 벤자민은 밀러를 경계하지만, 저에게 처음으로 인간적 관심을 내보이는 그를 점점 거부할 수가 없게 되는데……

Believe me when I say that I'm not actively seeking out reads to give them a low rating; more than anything, I'm always hopeful that a read will stir my heart or ruffle my feathers—in a good way. 😔 It's safe to say, though, I've hit a bit of a bad run of not-so-stellar reads; but I suppose the only way out is through this rough patch to make it to greener pastures. Mixing metaphors, I know, but let's just roll with it. 🙃
That's also what I pretty much what I had to do with Touché, Mon Amour, whilst reading. It's sooooo fast-paced that once the intro dump is initiated, it's literally a hop, skip, jump (sorry, no time to include the and 🏃🏻♀️) into the plot and climax with hardly enough time for time for relationships to interact with meaningful moments in order for the full impact of how deep their connection was to feel convincing. 😮💨
“Ah, I guess the reason my heart beats every time I see him isn’t because he was ominous.”
It's 27yo Benjamin Edgar - a dhampir, the only cursed beings who could kill those who lived an eternal life - and Miller's nonexistent history that paves the storyline of vampires and chases and spicy times that didn't quite hit a nerve, because I never got a chance to breathe with it. 🙎🏻♀️ For an existence built on revenge, it didn't really give me the chance to embrace Ben's true nature.
The fan translation was unfortunately a little rough - but I guess it got the point across - abrupt as it was - as the plot hurried along; almost as if it didn't want to dwell on the details but just get on with it. 😅 Which is a shame, because there was potential to give depth to the characters, make their interactions more engaging, and even bring nuances to Ben's unique abilities and talents, but sadly, I just flew through it.
“How did I end up here? I couldn’t stop and I didn’t want to stop.”
Ben and Miller's attraction for each other - even though mutual - still felt one-sided. I never got to glimpse both sides of the coin simultaneously. Their romance was quick and rushed and had feeling - a blessing and a curse - but lacked heart. 🥺 The only two scenes that portrayed some palpable emotion were when Ben discovered Miller's true identity and when he pretty much refused to work alongside him on the serial vampire killer case. 🧛🏻
I also wish the side couple of Aidan and Daniel didn't have to end up on that note; they deserved better, and for once, I do agree that Ben was responsible, even if he resembled hope itself. 😞 It sucked big time. But I do admit that the title has its moment to claim its worth in the final scene that made it make sense for it to be called as such. ✨
Points for this interesting observation, too, that earned a chuckle for me: Definitely an interesting take. 😆
“That’s why Britain was the most densely populated place for vampires. Britain had more cloudy days than bright ones, so it was just the right place for them to live.”

Idk yall. The plot is so light. Like when you're adding to much water to your soup, light. I think it can be better. The angst is kinda good? Like it got potential

It just felt really rushed. I saw someone say it has potential and I agree wholeheartedly. This story just needed a bit more development
