3.1 Body and Soulless by James Goss

3.2 War Seed by Johnny Candon

3.3 Two Monks, One Mistress by James Kettle

A set of three stories that, following on from the end of volume 2, see the Meddling Monk reluctantly forced to travel around with Missy, participating in schemes that are deadlier than his preferred form of chaos.

Body and Soulless - The first story starts in media res on an alien planet being invaded by incorporeal aliens that possess the bodies of the dead. This makes it sound like a zombie story, but that's not really accurate, partly because the aliens are more intelligent than the typical zombie, but also because much of the conflict takes place off-screen, with the battle seen more from a tactical/strategic point of view. A lot depends on how far you can suspend your disbelief while listening to this - the plot is completely bonkers and much of what happens (especially to the Monk) doesn't make a lot of sense. Fortunately, it's carried along by a frenetic pace and Gomez's performance which is, if anything, even crazier than usual here. Any flaws rapidly disappear behind the sheer madness of it all and the plethora of one-liners. 4.5 stars.

War Seed - Next, we're off to contemporary New York, which of course, means English actors doing American accents with varying degrees of success. It's a more straightforward story than the previous one, involving a company that has mysteriously gained access to what appears to be Time Lord regeneration technology. Missy is primarily the driving force behind this one; despite early indications that he might get a bigger role, the Monk is largely reduced to watching from the sidelines. What's going on is revealed at an early stage, with the story mainly being more about how Missy reacts to it than about any implications it might have of itself. Nonetheless, it's another fun piece, the writing of which might well stand out in any other collection. 4 stars.

Two Monks, One Mistress - The final story is the historical one of the set, and both the strongest and the one that's most clearly a comedy. It's set in 16th-century Italy, with Missy trying to deal with one of the Borgias and double-crossing as many people as she can in the process. There are misunderstandings, women doing a bad job of pretending to be men, and characters self-consciously delivering pointless soliloquies (riffing off Shakespeare here), not to mention fun with psychic paper and a very heavy piece of valuable loot. As both title and cover art intimate, we are also introduced to a future incarnation of the Monk and both versions get plenty to do alongside the main title character. Yes, it's another daft plot, but that's rather the point, and the banter between the leads is once again gloriously fun. 5 stars.

The one thing you can always rely on is that any Missy story is going to be utterly bonkers.
Michelle Gomez is wonderful, vocally she is just as amazing as she is on screen.
The chemistry with Rufus Hounds "Meddling Monk" has always been fun to listen too and I'm glad we got a full boxset with them together.

The stories are fun, nothing serious, just a mad lunatic and time meddler travelling through time and space, with a nice appearance from what we now know to be his future incarnation "The Nun".

I hope we still get more Missy in the future from Big Finish, because the character still so has much to give us.

This is a fun set of stories, Missy and the Monk bounce off each other and there are many hilarious exchanges and scenes.
This was created with fun in mind, and fun it is.
However, it lacks a lot of depth and finesse.
Sadly, the stories themselves are neither very original nor particularly memorable.
Many of the things that will happen you can guess from a mile away, and it lives of the anticipation of when the penny will drop.
Performance of the leads is top notch.
So yes, this is a fun set, and if you like Missy, you will definitely enjoy this.
But it is far from perfect, nor does it reach the freshness of the previous Missy sets.

The banter between Missy and the Monk is so delicious, and then it gets even better when the Nun comes into the picture. It’s bothered me before how the Monk isn’t just called the Time Meddler, but I like how they make it part of the story that in-universe he’s tired of being called the Monk after wearing that outfit only “a couple of times.” And then it gets funnier when the Nun insists she doesn’t need to be called the Meddling Nun. Just fun acting all around.

How lovely it was to sit and listen to Michelle as Missy again. I think this might be the best of her box sets yet. The last story with the Monk also getting a female incarnation was really great. Michelle said she wanted to do it on stage and I would be there every single night if that happened. Very light hearted, very silly but quite glorious.

Body and Soulless.
Plot was great and again Rufus Hound steals the show. 4/5

War Seed.
Plot was OK. Loved the idea and think it could make a great story arc for a War/9th/10th Doctor boxset. Hope this gets brought up again. 3.5/5

Two Monks, One Mistress
Great plot where again Rufus Hound steals the show as the Monk. 4/5

All the Missy audio adventures are great, and this one's no different. Pairing her with the Monk is an excellent idea.

Another great Missy series. Missy and the Meddling Monk played off each other so well. I was disappointed that there were only three stories in this set, but that's a minor gripe.

The final story is fantastic, with the amazing Gemma Whelan returning as the Nun, this time paired with Missy and Rufus Hound's Monk

After a bit of disappointment in Series 2 (I really should re-listen to those episodes again), Series 3 is a weird, wonderful delight. Michelle Gomez is brilliant. The writing alone can't quite capture the bizarre character of Missy -- it's all about her performance. Teaming her up with Rufus Hound's Monk was a fantastic idea for Series 3 (and maybe an obvious decision given that the previous two episodes with him in it were the best of the bunch so far). The two of them play off each other perfectly. Less certain about Gemma Whelan's "Meddling Nun," who didn't seem as good here as she was in [the other series] where she was introduced.

The jokey references come at you with the speed of MST3K riffs. (When she called her battle computer "Borac" in the first episode, it caused me to bust out laughing while listening alone in the car. That doesn't happen very frequently. Anyway, that's just one of many references and in-jokes that fly at you, like the "Terry Dicks containment field" or Missy shouting out "Creag an tuire!" as she attacks an alien spaceship. There are several I'm sure I missed.) The weird part about this, is that it's so completely off the wall at times, that it almost comes off as a parody of Doctor Who rather than a spin-off. But . . . I'm okay with that.

Took me forever to finish this because it was honestly pretty boring, which was both a strange surprise and quite a shame, because anything with Missy in it should automatically be a riot (as the first two sets indeed were); however, unfortunately, this particular set was just not very well-written overall.

In fact, the first story was downright awful (and pointless)-- it wasn't enjoyable at all. The third story was ridiculous and insubstantial, but at least it was somewhat funny. The only thing really saving this set was the second story, which was both amusing and tragic in turns while also adding another layer to both Missy's history and the Time War.

TL;DR: Other than story #2 and the very end of story #3, there's not much to miss if you skip this set. 🤷‍♀️

I did not have as much fun with this one as with previous Missy boxsets. I just simply didn't find them as fun as previous outings. They still had moments, and I think the final story was the most fun, but I didn't get the same glee that I did in the previous two sets. (And I'm getting very bad at reviewing these in a timely manner, so I'm not remembering details as much. I listened to this in mid-September and am reviewing it end of November.)
