It also looks at creative ways of protesting – student strikes, singing protests, guerrilla gardening, noisy protests and surreal happenings; and ends with a practical section on how children can organise or participate in a protest themselves.

About the author

London-born Emily Haworth-Booth is an award-winning author, illustrator and educator who teaches at the Royal Drawing School in London.

Alongside her children’s picture books, Emily is currently working on a long-form graphic memoir for adults. Her short comics have previously appeared in print in the Observer and Vogue and her first children’s book, The King Who Banned the Dark, was shortlisted for numerous awards including the Klaus Flugge Prize and IBW Book
Awards.

Along with her sister, Alice Haworth-Booth, she is an activist with Extinction Rebellion. The sisters are currently collaborating on Protest!, an illustrated history of peaceful protests from around the world – from 1170 BCE to the present day – which will be published by Pavilion Children's Books in spring 2021.

This book provides a great overview of different protests throughout history. While it is by no means comprehensive, it’s a fantastic starting point to learn more about protests. There’s a few mentioned that I will definitely be doing further research about.

ประท้วงไปทำไม อ่านหนังสือเล่มนี้สิ มันมีคำตอบ

หนังสือเล่มนี้ออกมาในปี 2565 สองปีหลังจากการประท้วงซึ่งประทุไปทั่วสังคมไทย จึงไม่นับว่าทันกับเหตุการณ์นัก ไม่แน่ใจว่าต้องการลดกระแส หรือการประท้วงเป็นแรงบันดาลให้เกิดการแปลหนังสือเล่มนี้ อย่างไรก็ดี แม้ไม่อินเทรนแต่ก็ไม่นับว่าตกเทรนเท่าใดนัก เพราะกระแสการประท้วงด้วยไม่พอใจรัฐบาลได้คุกรุ่นไปทั่วแล้ว!

"ประท้วง!" มีดีที่ภาพประกอบเรื่องราว เป็นการ์ตูนขำ ๆ ใช้ภาษาที่เข้าถึงง่าย และนั่นก็ทำให้เป็นหนังสือที่เหมาะกับเยาวชน อ่านง่าย อ่านสนุก อ่านเอาเรื่องก็พอไหว

เนื้อหาแบ่งออกเป็น 12 บท ตามอะไรก็ไม่รู้ 555 ที่ แน่ๆ ผู้เขียนไม่ได้เรียงตามลำดับเวลา จะว่าจัดกลุ่มตามหัวข้อก็ไม่เชิง หัวข้อทั้ง 12 ได้แก่
1. ยุคโบราณ
2. ตัวปัญหายุคกลาง
3. ต่อต้านผู้รุกราน
4. สงครามชนชั้น
5. สิทธิสำหรับผู้หญิง
6. อิสระและการขัดขืน
7. อิสรภาพและสิทธิพลเมือง
8. ผู้ไม่เชื่อง
9. การปฏิวัติโดยพลังประชาชน
10. จงแสดงออกมา จงพูดออกมา
11. การลุกฮือทั่วโลก
12. รากหญ้ารุ่นใหม่

หนังสือไม่ได้ลงลึกถึงรายละเอียดของแต่ละเหตุการณ์ เพียงแต่เล่าคร่าว ๆ ว่าเกิดอะไรขึ้นบ้าง และที่สำคัญคือ อะไรคือเหตุแห่งการประท้วงนั้น ๆ น่าเสียดายว่ายังมีเหตุการณ์ประท้วงสำคัญ ๆ อีกหลายเหตุการณ์ที่หนังสือไม่ได้แตะเลย เช่น การประท้วงที่ทิเบต พม่า และการสังหารในเดือนตุลาทั้งสองครั้งของไทยเอง (แต่มีการประท้วงของไทยเรื่องหนึ่งด้วย) แม้ว่าผู้เขียนได้ออกตัวว่าพยายามเลือกการประท้วงเพื่อเรียกร้องประชาธิปไตยและสิทธิมนุษยชนและต่อต้านการกดขี่เป็นหลักก็ตาม

Protest! How People Have Come Together to Change the World is a well-written history of protest movements from around the globe, organized both chronologically and thematically. The authors, Alice and Emily Haworth-Booth, describe their own experiences of protest and provide a clear-eyed view of the history of protest movements, highlighting both their successes and failures.

The book covers a wide range of movements, from the Kalabhra Revolt in India to the French Revolution to the fight for civil rights in the United States. It also examines lesser-known movements, such as Chile’s protests against food shortages in the early 1970s and Nigeria’s Abeokuta Women’s Revolt in the 1940s.

What sets Protest! apart is its focus on the protestors themselves. The authors write from their perspective and present the movements in line with their own sympathies. This imbues the book with a sense of excitement, possibility, and shared humanity, making it accessible and genuinely inspiring for readers.

While the book does not shy away from explaining that not all protests are successful and that many involve police or state violence, it maintains an overall positive and empowering tone. It is particularly timely given the recent surge in youth activism and involvement in protests.

The book covers MANY topics so many over the overviews are just that; overviews. But fear not, an extensive bibliography and suggestions for further reading can be found at the back.

Protest! How People Have Come Together to Change the World is an excellent resource for anyone interested in the history of protest movements, particularly for young readers. It presents a broad range of movements and provides a valuable perspective on the protestors themselves. I thought it to be an incredible achievement.

Ug, this book was such a downer for me. I was really looking to learning more about history and the people who made things happen. Instead, Protest!" How People Have Come Together to Change the World made me wonder how this book even got published. Protest! seems to be a book with a liberal slant that doesn't teach much about anything. After perusing it for a bit, my teenage son put the book down and told me that the book was...

หนังสือเล่มนี้เป็นเหมือนการรวบรวมการประท้วงตั้งแต่แรกเริ่มในอดีตกาล ซึ่งไม่ได้หยิบมาแค่ประท้วงทำไมเพื่ออะไร แต่มันทำให้เห็นมิติของการสร้างความสมดุลระหว่างผู้มีอำนาจกับผู้ใต้บังคับบัญชา การหยิบยื่นสิ่งที่ต้องการที่มาพร้อมกับกระบวนการและท่าทีที่แตกต่างกันออกไป ด้วยภาษาที่เข้าใจง่าย และการสรุปรวมแบบที่เห็นมิติที่น่าสนใจรวมไปถึงความหลากหลายที่สามารถผลักดันโลกให้ดีขึ้นได้จริงๆ

This book is an overview of Protest from ancient times until the present day. It is a really interesting look at history and how people have used protest to advocate for change and progress. Young people and adults can learn from this book. I found it fascinating.

A good overview to whet the interest of mid grade and YA crowds. My copy is bright fluorescent pink, which helps grab their attention. Was part of my classroom library.
